Commodity Fragrances Book+ Review (Jerome Epinette) + A Bolder Expression Giveaway

Book + Commodity Fragrances

Commodity Fragrances Book + via the brand

Commodity Book+ is a bolder expression of the original Book, which was inspired by turning the pages and breathing in the smell of dry paper mingling in with the open fresh air. In Book +, I also used this as an inspiration, but wanted to create a more expressive experience.

I’d say Milk is my favorite Commodity fragrance. Yes it leans feminine, it’s lactonic and that’s exactly why I love it. It was one of the first creations that started the milky fragrances trend, ahead of its time for sure. On to Book +, I can see why is named Book as it has many woody notes which of course, pages on a book come from trees. The inspiration is super clear. I do like Steven mentioning the eucalyptus doesn’t give it a menthol vibe, it’s just faintly in the background. Shout out to the presentation as the cover looks like a book indeed. Winter is coming soon so this one will be a perfect wear on the colder months. Cheers from the USA and thanks to Europerfumes for the generous giveaway.

Don’t have much experience with Commodity except sniffing a few of their fragrances and the local mall. Loving the notes of this one with eucalyptus, sandalwood & smokey musk.

Steven mentioned a peppery vibe to it which I like in fragrances. Steven compares it to Santal 33 but a darker version which perks my interest. Look forward to trying this one out.

This is nostalgia in a bottle. It’s cool they went went a theme such as books and really made it photorealistic. I imagine that antique bookstore that has that slight mildew basement and vintage papers smell. The sandalwood isn’t a challenging note and I imagine alongside the eucalyptus you get an aromatic, peppery, and fresh herbaceous feel to it. When Steven said it last ten plus hours on skin that what I love to hear. Like to have a frag with some body and legs to make it throughout the day with me. Would love to own this from Jacksonville, NC.

  • I really like Nectar from Commodity. I enjoyed Steven’s review. He mentioned a touch of smoke, which is right up my alley. I like that it has a violet note. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff. MI USA

  • Book-y nostalgia? Those words read right into my vibe. I admit the trepedition on the smoke and eucalyptus, which can take over, but Steven assures neither does, so count me in on the draw! I think Moss or Wool have been my favorite Commodity scents so far.

  • I love Commodity fragrances. They have so many great scents and I really like what they’ve done with their collection since the rebrand a couple years ago The whole scent space concept is great. My favorites from this collection so far are Moss+ and Gold+, though my favorite from the entire brand is Gin from the archive collection. I have a travel spray of Book+, but do not yet have a bottle. As Steven said, the sandalwood is the dominant note of the fragrance, and the violet does wonders by enhancing its smoothness. I also love the dark air it has to it. I love wearing it out to dinner, but have also reached for it during the cooler months as an office scent. I would be thrilled to have a full size bottle. Best of luck to all. I live in NC, USA.

I’ve been wanting Steven to review this fragrance as I’m very interested in woodsy scents. This sounds like just what I’m looking for. My favorite Commodity fragrance is Milk, it lives up to its hype. I really want to get my hands on Book, the Bold version. I live in Oregon.

  • Jared Overbeck says:

Commodity fragrance has really been doing some great things, from Gold + to Milk, they’ve had some iconic fragrances and it doesn’t surprise me at all that they’ve returned to Book to intensify it for the crowd who loved the first chorus of the fragrance so much. I look forward to hopefully smelling it and comparing the notes in the near future.

I’ve been so mentally disorganized lately I haven’t had time to post reviews and in giveaways, but I’m really happy to get back to full functionality.

  • Book+, this is my first time hearing about this brand, and I’m obsessed! Cedarwood, sandalwood, and pepper sound great. I love the design of the bottle, simple but sophisticated. It looks like it will be a strong and very woody fragrance. I’m glad that eucalyptus isn’t predominant in this scent. I prefer fragrances where eucalyptus is subtle rather than a main note. I like that this fragrance promises to be darker and bolder. It seems like it will last and have good projection. I hope I win the giveaway! I live in the USA.

  • I’ve tried a few of the Commodity fragrances including Book, Gold and Vetiver. I enjoy Book in the cooler months when the wood and smoky musk shine. As Steven mentioned the eucalyptus doesn’t dominate the fragrance, it acts as a background for the mostly sandalwood scent. MD, USA.

  • I love Jerome Épinettes work! Ive been a fan for years, since his Atelier Cologne days. He made one of my favorite vétivers for them, Vetiver Fatale and soooo many other greats. I had no idea he was so handsome too. But of course! Strangely Commodity has been a house I haven’t had much experience with just by happenstance. This one sounds phenomenal. I love how Steven described the eucalyptus and how Jerome added violet to it, one of my favorite notes. I would love to have this. I am in California.

  • I loved Steven’s review! The original (Expressive0 Book is my all time favorite from Commodity, with Gold being a close 2nd. I just love that combination of Eucalyptus and Cedar Wood notes. Reading the notes, you’d never even realize eucalyptus is one of the main notes since it normally comes off astringent/medicinal. But it is such a smooth blend with the wood notes that really gives it that ethereal, comforting vibe. I get so many compliments every time I wear it. I have smelled the Bold version but just haven’t made the purchase yet. I’ve been wearing the original Book since 2019 when it was with a different company/owner. I’m so glad the new owner maintained the original formulation. It is spectacular!

  • Paper-scented perfumes can often lack endurance or just feel a little ephemeral, so the Plus version of Book will appeal to many. Interesting how Epinette achieved that added intensity, “laying in violet” and vetiver, which might be contributing the slight smokiness mentioned. I’m glad he described the eucalyptus note too; for the best that this doesn’t read as mentholated. Spicy, woodsy, dark bookstore sounds great for autumn and winter.

I’m in the USA. I haven’t tried any Commodity fragrances, but I’ve heard Moss is nice, and Book+ would be right in my wheelhouse.

What interests me about Steven’s review of Commodity Book + is learning how this brilliant perfumer Jerome Epinette created the expressive version of Book + which realistically exudes the aroma of turning the pages of an old book and breathing the smell of the dry paper mingling in the fresh open air. The amplified notes of Eucalyptus and camphorous Cedarwood, earthy Vetiver, and powdery Violet helps accentuate that experience for the wearer. Steven does an incredible job describing how realistic this fragrance comes across. My favorite Commodity Fragrance is Gold +. I am from the USA.

  • Not super familiar with the brand other than a spritz now and then at the mall. I do remember liking Milk. Always interested when I see a violet note. Nice to hear the eucalyptus note isn’t too prominent in the menthol direction. Yes, I am a bookworm, but nowadays most of my reading is through my library app. watching this makes me miss that book smell. This is making me want to take a trip to Powell’s books in Portland OR. Thanks for the opportunity. USA. WA

Thanks for the nice video Steven!

I did not know that there was a Book, Book+ and Book-. I need to look at the scent descriptions and see how they are doing.

I like the mix of notes with this fragrance, gives me some memories of Diptyque Tam Dao and Lalique Encre Noir/Encre Noir Sport.

I would definitely like to sample this.

One of my favorite Commodity fragrances is Orris – a simple, ethereal and beautiful iris scent.

    Cheers from WI, USA

I love Santal 33 and woody, peppery scents so Book + will be a treasure! I enjoyed reading this review and look forward to finding a sample soon. Thank you!

Commodity fragrances have been on my horizon for a long time. I love the idea of a dark fragrance with sandalwood, cedar, and eucalyptus. The spiciness also appeals to me. I am a bookworm and a person who seeks solace and safety in bookstores, so Book+ really appeals to me.

    Hi there,

Intrigued by his suggestion that this should be perfect for the colder months of the year! I cannot wait for those months to arrive!!! My favorite Commodity fragrance is actually the original BOOK, which I fell in love with in earlier days of my book publishing career. We were made for each other, I guess 🙂 Thank you so much.
