Hiram Green Slowdive, Hiram Green Vivacious and Hiram Green Tryst

The air remains still. All the leaves refuse to budge. Beautiful summer! ~ Matsuo Basho

Not so for the Southern Hemisphere, where winter is its current norm – but for those of us in a Northern Hemispheric August, it is high summer. Heat and humidity are the order of the day, and we look to our fragrant choices as a source of respite, refreshment, and either distraction from or celebration of the season. Gouda-based natural perfumer Hiram Green provides us with so many aromatic options that it makes one’s head spin: which to choose? Having sampled them all, I’m at a loss to guide you, since his perfumes really suit all seasons and occasions. Notwithstanding, here are three delicious scents of which I’m very fond: they glow in the current estival swelter, each one unique, long-lasting, and a joy to wear.

Hiram Green Slowdive

Hiram Green Slowdive (2017): What say you to a honeyed floral indolence? The intoxication which pollinators must surely experience as they flit from blossom to blossom? Hiram Green has a name for that, and it’s called Slowdive. As is the case with each and every fragrance this perfumer composes, the perfumed whole is entirely larger and more fulfilling than the sum of its parts. It’s too facile to review the notes and mutter, “orange blossom and neroli again?”- because nothing could be farther from the truth. These two form a companionable intimacy with heady heavy hitters’ tobacco blossom (spicy, fruited, musky) and seductive tuberose. Beeswax and honeyed tones underscore Slowdive with a richly indolic quality, further accentuated by resins. The addition of dried fruits embellishes a distinctly boozy, decadent feel. Hiram Green Slowdive notes: neroli, orange flower, tobacco blossom, beeswax, tuberose, dried fruits, honeyed resins

A word from the perfumer: Slowdive – one of the best sellers. Everyone likes it. Also, it is a very good fragrance for late summer before the autumn officially arrives-Hiram

Vivacious by Hiram Green is being discontinued

Hiram Green Vivacious brand image via the perfumer

Hiram Green Vivacious (2020): Do you crave a certain freshness combined with pronounced floral zing? Something playful, poetic, and flirtatious? If so, Hiram Green Vivacious would be an excellent choice. There are many delightful facets at play: the tonic impact of introductory bergamot, ionones aplenty (the gift of both violet and iris), and an impassioned, fiery carnation. Vivacious’ feathery amber base complements these elements weightlessly; Hiram’s envisioned violet is ensconced in a tenderly powder-like drydown which is unlike the rice powders, baby powders, or other cosmetic nuances which may tend to date a fragrance. Its name is well chosen, for Vivacious bursts with ebullience and bonhomie. I’d choose this perfume for putting a spring in my stride. Hiram Green Vivacious notes: bergamot, violet, carnation, orris (iris), amber

Hiram on Vivacious – I really like this fragrance. Sadly, it is being phased out of the collection. If it sounds tempting, buy it now or never.

Hiram Green Tryst

Hiram Green Tryst image via the perfumer

Hiram Green Tryst (2024): All features of the orange in abundance: bottled sunshine, aka Tryst. Open-heartedly solar and enchanting, this latest release from Hiram Green Perfumes is sure to make you feel like an Olympian – intending Mt. Olympus, of course. Tryst’s vivacity is larger than life: expansive, happy-making, and all-embracing. There’s a very good reason why it made my upcoming best of 2024 list so early on in the year (March, to be precise) – and why I purchased a flacon for myself into the bargain. Tryst is seductive in a wholesome fashion, not an easy accomplishment in itself. I find that it makes me feel irresistible without compromising good taste or good manners: it will never bore or pigeonhole you, because it defies gender identity or simplistic categorization. Tryst notes: orange zest, green buds, neroli, petitgrain, orange flower, honeyed resins

Hiram’s note: IMO it is a straightforward easy to like a orange flower/ neroli fragrance.

Dear readers, if you have yet to sample any of Hiram Green’s fragrances, I would heartily encourage you to so. His work refutes the notion that natural perfumes cannot be complex or possess acceptable longevity. The three I’ve chosen Hiram Green Slowdive, Vivacious and Tryst (and all the others as well) fully demonstrate just how exquisite beautiful raw materials can be. In a current atmosphere where, one may encounter fewer of these costly olfactory natural materials, Hiram’s perfumes are certain to prove revelatory.

Samples either sent me, or flacons purchased by me. My nose is my own…

  • Oh my goodnes. I simple love Hiram greens scent .the Slowdive is trult amazing and also Hyde.. oh my a genious making this scents. Lovely stoff

  • Ida’s reviews truly bring Hiram Green’s creations to life, highlighting the complexity and artistry behind each fragrance. The description of Slowdive as a honeyed floral with intoxicating notes of tobacco blossom and tuberose makes it sound absolutely mesmerizing—perfect for late summer with its rich, decadent feel. Vivacious appeals to me with its fresh, playful energy, especially with the vibrant combination of violet and carnation, while Tryst seems to be a burst of bottled sunshine, offering an uplifting orange blossom experience.

If I were to win, I would choose Slowdive, as the combination of honeyed resins and dried fruits sounds deeply alluring. I also have to mention that I once had a sample of Hyde and was completely obsessed with it—I saved every drop because it was such an addictive scent. Hiram Green’s work is truly something special.

  • Ramses Perez says:

These are 3 amazing summery choices but due to the discontinuation of Vivacious, I’m leaning towards that one. Slowdive looks to be more of a transitional fragrance from summer to fall but also wearable during the summer months. Tryst is the most summery one out of all of these with a prominent orange/neroli combo. Vivacious is a floral affair and the one I’d like to win if chosen. Cheers from the USA.

  • Wow! Hiram is one of my favourite perfumers! Ida’s reviews capture the essence of Hiram Green’s fragrances beautifully. Vivacious stands out for its fresh, playful vibe with violet and carnation, while Tryst promises a bright, uplifting orange blossom experience.
They all sound amazing but I’d choose slowdive for its warm, indulgent feel. Hiram Green’s creations are truly unique.

Big fan of Hiram’s Arcadia for myself and Moon Bloom on my gf. Out of these three, I think Tryst sounds the most intriguing. I grew up around orange groves and this sounds like the closest approximation to it. I’m in the US.

  • I love how Ida’s reviews highlight Hiram Green’s Slowdive for its rich, honeyed floral notes, Vivacious for its playful bergamot and violet blend, and Tryst for its sunny, orange-infused scent. I’d love to have them all in my collection but would choose Tryst as I love orange flowers. I haven’t tried Hiram Green’s fragrances yet, but Ida’s descriptions make them highly appealing.

  • As a fan of Hiram Green and Slowdive, I enjoyed reading about Tryst and Vivacious. The aromatic nuances of his perfumes are what draws me to his brand. I would choose Tryst, if lucky, because of Ida’s description of “bottled sunshine”. Also, I enjoy honey. Thanks for another wonderful review and draw. Michigan USA

  • redwheelbarrow says:

Wow these all sound so wonderful. I would chose Slowdive because I still have not sampled this one and know I would love it. I love a well done honey note. Also, I was a bit worried about the notes sounding like something I may have owned but I love the way you explain that they create something of their own together. I haven’t sampled this house yet, mainly because of longevity worries but you’ve encouraged me to seek out some samples. Thank you for the draw, from the US.

  • Donna Patterson says:

These perfumes sound so refreshing. We sre having a hot humid summer here in New England. I would love to have one of these lovely fragrances. Thank you!

  • I would love to get to try Slowdive as I have read and heard many great things about it! Thanks!

  • I have sampled Slowdive and I agree it’s a masterpiece, artistic but approachable and so wonderfully potent.
I kind of feel drawn to all three, to Slowdive and Tryst because I love a well made orange blossom, but also Vivacious sounds wonderfully exciting, with the duo of citrus notes and powdery florals. However, I would choose Slowdive, should I win, simply because I would know what I’m dealing with.
    Greetings from the EU.

  • My choice is Slowdive! The honeyed scent with notes of tobacco flower, dried fruits, and creamy tuberose. It’s for sure a warm, sweet, and slightly resinous fragrance that evokes the feeling of being in a sunny meadow with bees buzzing around1. It’s for sure long-lasting. Vivacious sounds bright and joyful, transitioning to warm and luxurious. Tryst is for sure an elegant and timeless fragrance, perfect for special occasions. It’s floral and romantic in my opinion. I never tried Hiram Green but Slowdive really caught my attention! I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • Heidi Schroeder says:

Aloha! I’m captivated by Hiram Green’s fragrances, and I own several. My favorite so far is Voyage 19. Everything Ida has written about Tryst makes me sure that I’d love it, so that would be my choice should I win. Writing to you from Hawaiʻi, USA

  • I’m familiar with Hiram and intrigued by his concoctions but have never smelled them in person. I’m so so curious about Slow Dive!

    Kelsey from California

  • Yes I do crave a certain freshness combined with pronounced floral zing, playful and poetic! It seems like Vivacious might be what my summer wardrobe might be missing. I’m in the US. Thanks!

  • Dubaiscents says:

Hiram Green is one of my favorite houses. I appreciate that he doesn’t rush to put out a ton of extraneous releases but instead gives us a slow and steady stream of gorgeous masterpieces. I own both Slowdive and Vivacious and have Tryst high on my to try list (especially since he says it build/ upon another favorite of mine, Dillatante). I would love to add this to my collection! US

  • AromaDulce73 says:

If I had to pick I would go with the latest release TRYST. I love the smell of oranges and I don’t have any orange forward fragrances in my collection. Throw in some notes of green buds & honeyed resins, I’m all in.

    Los Angeles Ca, USA

  • Ida’s review really helps me sense what these are about and shares the nuances of what makes them unique. Slowdive would be my pick based on the notes. I am intrigued with honeyed resins, tuberose with neroli. Hello from Minnesota-USA.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

Wow! What a draw! I’m a huge fan of Hiram Green’s work. I just tested Tryst and I find his note on it intriguing–it is likeable and simple in a way–but it really does illustrate and play up the complex, weird, honeyed beauty of orange blossom absolute. I also love your point about the beauty of raw materials being demonstrated in his scents. Slowdive is a huge favorite, as is Vivacious (being an Apres l’Ondee fan!). Also, a big thumbs up to Philtre, another great Hiram carnation. I’m left wondering if Vivacious is being discontinued because of overlap with Philtre or if it just isn’t selling well. Reading comments below, I also forgot Moon Bloom was a thing…his line is really full of winners! In any case, thanks for this generous draw! I’d love to win Tryst! I’m in the US.

  • These all sound wonderful! I’m especially drawn to Tryst as I identify with the “seductive yet wholesome” description and I find orange blossom to be natures anti depressant. How Hiram is able to make such clear, and lasting perfumes with all naturals is truly mind blowing. I’m in NY, USA

  • This is what I liked about each perfume:
Slowdive: “a honeyed floral indolence, the intoxication which pollinators must surely experience as they flit from blossom to blossom”
Vivacious: “freshness combined with pronounced floral zing, it bursts with ebullience and bonhomie”
Tryst: “all features of the orange in abundance: bottled sunshine, solar and enchanting”

I’d pick Tryst. Still haven’t tried any Hiram Green creations.
    Hugs from EU.

  • Based on Ida’s reviews, each fragrance has its unique charm:

    Slowdive:
The rich, honeyed notes combined with tobacco flower and dried fruits create a warm and inviting scent that feels like a cozy embrace.
    Vivacious:
The vibrant blend of violet, carnation, and amber offers a fresh and joyful experience, reminiscent of a sunny meadow filled with blooming flowers.
    Tryst:
The romantic mix of orange blossom, neroli, and honeyed resins evokes memories of a sweet, carefree day spent in an orange grove.

If I were to win, I would love to receive Slowdive as it perfectly captures the essence of cheerfulness that I adore in a fragrance.
Thank you for this wonderful opportunity!

  • I love so many of Hiram Greens’s fragrances! Shangri La, Philtre, Arbole, Moon Bloom etc. I have two bottles of Slowdive I love it so much. I would looove to have Tryste! The notes sound scrumptious and I know he does magic with florals. Neroli is so rich but still refreshing when a bit of petigrain is added. It’s perfection.
    I am in California.

  • Eris.can.swatch.kaos says:

I am intrigued by the originality of these natural fragrances. I do not have a favorite, as I am unfamiliar with Hiram Green’s creations, but would like a first date to see how I like them. For me, the most interesting and pleasant sounding of the three, Slowdive has my heart here. Perfect for late summer, this scent couldn’t come at a better time. I live in Oregon.

  • Hiram green fragrances are so unique, in a world where everyone smells the same , these stand out from the crowd .
    Uk

  • I own 2 other perfumes of the house, namely Arcadia and Moon Bloom, and Slowdive has been on my short list for 2 years, so I have to enter this giveaway.

I will start with Slowdive. Is the perfect beeswax interpretation. The tobacco & orange blossom are very nice pairings with the sweetness of the beeswax, creating the most feminine and alluring scent. AND IT LASTS!

Vivacious – A powdery dream for a violet & orris lover like me, Vivacious is on my top 5 combos of this duo, a truly bohemian floral ballad
. But the price, oh well …

  • Sorry, I pressed enter by mistake.

Tryst is unknown to me, sadly, but the notes are heaven. I have to test it because I am very curious if it’s seductive in a wholesome fashion, not an easy accomplishment in itself, like Ida says.

Thank you Ida for the article, I love your tastes. And thank you Hiram for this chance! Fingers crossed.

  • Danu Seith-Fyr says:

Dear Hiram such a lovely man and an exquisite collection. Vetiver remains a favourite for me and amongst these 3 one must choose if one must – Tryst for me. All solar indulgence and Narcotic olfactory hedonism.
Thank you dear Ida and Cafleurebon. I live in Sw France

  • Jared Overbeck says:

Hi, I was captivated by this review compendium, and I was really intrigued by all the reviews.

I was in love with TRYST, by the time I finished the review.

It comes as a close second to Slow Dive, which was my favorite. The picture of the pollinators flirting to blossom.

The third, Vivacious, sounds delicious. Today I’m working on several of my favorite Oud heavy scents, getting ready for winter, and working on some spices based calligraphy inks that I’m experimenting with adding different scents to.

Thanks for the giveaway, I hope I win!

    Cordially,

  • David Furman says:

I’ve been interested in Hiram Green ever since the article about trust a few months back. There use of naturals and raw materials makes them stand out from the rest and keeping their standards high as possible. Tryst interested me mostly because it is a citrus forward take on a summer freshie. The zestyness and the pettigrain make me think of artisan pure but here quality is higher and hopefully so is staying power. From Jacksonville, NC.

  • absurd nose says:

While these all sound wonderful. If pressed to chose I would select Slowdive. I have heard raves about it from multiple fragheads I follow and trust. Honey and indolic flowers can do no wrong and in the late summertime this is no doubt a perfect transition into fall. Also, I can’t help but think of Slowdive, the band, when I hear the name and I love the association. Thanks for the draw – I’m on the US. 🙂

  • I love Hiram Green and I follow his work closely since Moon Bloom which is in my opinion the best tuberose in the world and much better than Carnal Flower by Frederic Malle. I fervently support the work of small independent artisans who create natural and complex perfumes (Abel parfum, Jorum studio, Voyages Imaginaires, …). The perfume I would like to win is Tryst because I love the scent of orange blossom in summer and I haven’t tried it yet. I live in France, EU.

  • I’m so glad that Hiram Green is getting some press! My favorite from him is Vivacious, and Ida’s review nails it. I haven’t tried Tryst yet but I love how Ida describes it as bottled sunshine, but also a bit seductive and hard to categorize – the mystery just intrigues me more! Trust would be my choice if I’m lucky enough to win. I’m in MN, USA.

  • Thank you so much for the wonderful review of Hiram Green’s fragrances. From your descriptions, I was particularly drawn to Vivacious. The fresh and lively combination of bergamot, violet, and carnation with the light amber base sounds like the perfect scent to bring energy and joy to my days. If I were lucky enough to win, I would prefer Vivacious, as it seems to align perfectly with my taste and style. Thank you again for this opportunity and for your generosity.

  • Hiram Green is a genius when it comes to creating fragrance. I’ve tried several of his scents, including Moon Bloom, Slowdive, and Philtre. All of them were exceptionally blended, complex and unlike anything on the market. I would be delighted with any of the three Ida chose, but since I’m familiar with Slowdive, I would love to have a bottle. The dried fruit, honey and tuberose is so feminine and perfect for the upcoming cooler weather. MD, USA.

  • I love the timely nature of these reviews of each summer-easy fragrance, but knowing they transcend seasons is good to know too. I’m sad that they are phasing out Vivacious because it sounds simply amazing and right up my alley, but if I won, I think I would choose Slowdive, as I’ve heard so much about it by so many people who love it, which is re-enforced by the review here: Sumptious and heady but summer-wearable. I haven’t had a chance to try Hiram Green’s creations yet. I live in the US.

  • PetaloDiCera says:

I always love reading about Hiram Green’s work!
I personally enjoy my precious bottle of Slowdive and Hyde..but I’m intrigued about what Ida has written on Tryst!
If I would be so lucky to win a bottle, I would love to receive TRYST and its “larger than life” vivacity…”expansive, happy-making, and all-embracing”, I need all of those!!

  • Patricia R. says:

Slowdive is such a cool name. I choose Tryst for the notes that resonate with me most. The concept of natural raw materials for the celebration of summer with these 3 perfumes is a feat in an attempt to tackle heat and humidity, a noble undertaking. I live in the EU.

  • So happy to see another feature on Hiram Green’s beautiful natural perfumes! Of the three highlighted here, I have only tried the crowdpleasing Slowdive (really an excellent fragrance for this season, as noted above). I recall Ida’s previous review of Tryst earlier this summer and while it sounds like a bright, stunning summer scent, I would really love to try Vivacious! I’m drawn to the idea of ebullient interplay between the citrus top notes, soft amber, and powdery iris and violet.

    Best wishes from the US!

  • i’ve been curious about slowdive for a long time! when i first started exploring fragrance i had a lot of preconceptions about what i would and wouldn’t want; some of this turned out to be good instincts but i was surprised by how wrong i was about a lot of it (which is really so much of the fun, isn’t it?) one such example was sweetness, which i was sure i would want nothing to do with. but the first time i encountered a really vivid honey note, i knew instantly that i would have to reevaluate. i’ve heard so much about slowdive as one of the iconic honey fragrances and would love to find out how it strikes me…

  • I currently own Slowdive and Vivacious and think your reviews are spot on…..they are both beautiful. Another favorite is Moon Bloom. I haven’t tried Tryst but it sounds lovely and like another HG fragrance I’d love to own. I’m in the USA.

  • Shibuichi2000 says:

It seems Hiram’s fragrances not only are natural, but also more than meets the…nose.
I loved Ida’ s description of all 3 – personally, when I see his gorgeous bottles I think they nestle something rich like honey inside.
I’d consider myself extremely lucky to win Vivacious, thank you for the chance.
    I’m in EU.

  • I am a big fan of Slowdive. This fragrance has changed my opinion of florals. And I literally can feel the honey every time I smell it
I would like to win a bottle of Tryst. I already have Slowdive and Vivacious

  • YES! Hiram’s Slow Dive is at the top of my FB list! I’ve been searching for the perfect honey/tobacco fragrance for years. I just got through my two precious samples purchased from LuckyScent, and halfway into my first sample (one wearing), I knew that my search was over… SD is an explosion of joy to my senses!

  • I haven’t tried any Hiram Green fragrances, so I enjoyed this profile of some of Ida’s favorites. Hiram’s comments are also a nice touch; it’s always good to hear how the perfumer recommends their own creations beyond the marketing copy. Ida makes a compelling case for his fragrances, natural perfumery, and making the most of beautiful raw materials. If I were to win, I’d choose Hiram Green Tryst—thanks!

    I’m in the USA.

  • Ida’s tested them all and can’t decide. I haven’t smelled any of them, so I will trust these 3 are the best. I would love to win Vivacious due to the violet and iris notes. Thanks for the chance. USA.

I think Hiram Green perfumes are works of art. I love them. I own Arbole, but fell in love with many of his creations. Vivacious was one of the unlikely suspects, because at the time, I thought I preferred a different type of scent profile. But my taste was expanding. I find Ida’s take so accurate. Something playful, poetic, and flirtatious it is indeed. I find it to be a scent for a fairy, one who lives near a castle. I want to wear it *now*. And my favorite Hiram Green… it’s probably Hyde. Thank you, from Romania

  • Slowdive sounds lovely. I like perfumes with a twist and tobacco accords. The neroli and orange blossom with tobacco, honey and tuberose sounds great for end of summer moving into the colder months. I live in Louisville, Kentucky.

  • My favorite Hiram Green is Vetiver. I enter for Slowdive that is unknown to me, but I heard outstanding feedback from my friends. Also, as per Ida’s review it is a honeyed floral boozy which sounds great to me 🙂
    From EU.

  • I’m a huge fan of Hiram Green and I own Slowdive, Moon Bloom and Philtre. After hearing about the launch of his latest fragrance Tryst, I’ve been looking forward to trying it out. Slowdive is mesmerizing in the Fall and Moon Bloon in the Summer. Philtre can definitely be worn all year long, it’s a wonderful carnation-centered fragrance.
I would love to win Tryst.
Many thanks for the draw. I live in France.

I love Hyde form Hiram Green! I love the way the birch tar and lemon work together. This is a perfume created by an artist, no doubt about it. I enjoyed reading Ida’s reviews. The review of Vivacious was the one that caught my attention. The carnation and orris notes sound so flirtatious. I would definitely choose Vivacious if I were the winner of the draw.
    I live in the USA.

  • Hiram Green both the brand , and perfumer I was not aware of before reading the article.
What really grabbed me in Ida Meister extensive journey through the brand catalog is that I have never smelled all natural fragrance, and the sole fact Hiram Green is a natural perfumer intrigued me.
Out of Slowdive , Vivacious and Tryst I’m keen on Slowdive the most. I’d say yes to honeyed tobacco, beeswax, boozy and fruity-floral decadent feel.
I wonder what kind of journey I’d have with Hiram Green Slowdive , so curious , all I know is that it’s a fragrance with lots of depth, and unique character
Thanks for the draw, from the USA

  • Michael Prince says:

What appeals to me about Hiram Green Slowdive, Vivacious and Tryst based upon Ida’s reviews is learning more about this amazing fragrance brand that incorporates floral touches to all their fragrances and showcasing the orange blossom and neroli combo in Slowdive and Tryst. This is a house I’ve always wanted to explore. I would love the try and win Slowdive it sounds so intricate and complex with honeyed and resinous indolic floral touches. I don’t have a favorite because I haven’t tried anything from Hiram Green yet. I am from the USA.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the lovely writeup Ida.

I had the chance to catch Hiram on a podcast and really like his approach and philosophy towards making scents.

Based on the description I would love to try Vivacious.
