 It’s challenging to find a wood fragrance that works well in summer. Sarah Horowitz Parfums Driftwood is fantastic genderless “sheer but there” long-lasting fragrance that takes you on an olfactive journey to the windswept shores of the California coast.

Before Steven’s review, I asked the perfumer, Sarah Horowitz-Thran for insights into her creative process for Sarah Horowitz Parfums Driftwood. Driftwood is a “vault fragrance”, brought back for a short time; you might want to try it before it’s gone.

Note: I want to share more about Sarah Horowitz-Thran who began her journey in fragrance in 1989, when she first stepped over the threshold of a bespoke perfumery on Newbury Street in Boston. As a pioneer in the indie perfume industry Sarah has lived many lives since her interest in olfaction first blossomed in 1988. Her scent Perfect Veil is a must in any collection and  when  featured on The Today Show last year, it sold out within minutes. In addition to her own brand, Sarah designed fragrances for brands including kai, IF and Bronzed for Ron Robinson, all the limited-edition Urban Decay fragrances and many more. I awarded Sarah Horowitz-Thran the CaFleureBon 2020 Hall of Fame as the godmother of  American Indie Perfumers. —Michelyn Camen, Editor-in- Chief

“Creating a fragrance starts differently every time, often a thought or memory, or smelling something in the world and thinking how I could capture it in a scent.  Driftwood came to me while on a long weekend getaway with my husband, in our favorite place on California’s Central Coast, called Cambria.  The beach there -Moonstone Beach – is covered with driftwood, and is so raw with the crashing pacific and the jagged coastline, with succulents and trees growing on its edge. The salty air and the dry, ocean and sun-bleached wood inspired me – and planted the seed for the fragrance that became Sarah Horowitz Parfums Driftwood. –Sarah Horowitz-Thran of Sarah Horowitz Parfums

    I’m not an avid Today show watcher but after the story Michelyn detailed, I will be Googling Perfect Veil after this. Sarah has lived many lives before starting her own house and looks like she has a hit on her hands with Driftwood. A salty and woody unisex fragrance is something you don’t see everyday. Despite it being a mostly summery fragrance I like Steven mentioned it lasts about 7 hours as that’s the standard we come to know for indie/niche houses. Deviating from a bright citrus fragrance is definitely a welcomed feeling and Driftwood sets you apart from what everyone else is wearing.     I’d love to try this! I watched and am a sub to redolessence on YouTube which is how I found out about this, so shout out to Steve. I’m an aspiring perfumer and would love to get my nose on this so enter me in.

    Steven’s videos are very objective and to the point providing notes and what he gets from his experience. Michelyn’s is a bit more fluid and getting more behind the scene info on inspiration and such. I’m a big fan of woods. Admittedly most are deep and dark finding an an airy, light or peaceful scent is a little more challenging. So the hunt continues. Driftwood the word bring memories on its own of smell, sound and even taste. Curious how the perfume will translate the inspiration.

    It was a pleasure watching Steven’s content and reading Mrs. Horowitz-Thran’s inspiration for this fragrance. I haven’t gotten my nose on this one but I’m imagining something in the vein of PL’s Salt and Pepper or MFK’s Gentle Fluidity Silver. I’ve never been to California either but her description takes you there even if for a moment. Thank you for the Intro, Michelyn, appreciate the generosity of the giveaway. Would be nice to add a woody scent to my warm weather repertoire. Many blessings from VA, USA!

    This fragrance really sounds up my alley. I love that Steven called it versatile, unisex, and unique. I liked the description by Michelyn that it is like the windswept shores of the California coast. I liked Sarah’s description of Moonstone beach as well. I live in Maryland USA.

    I grew up on the Pacific coast. My father was a fisherman, and my first “job” was on our boat. I learned to loathe the scent of the sea. It smelled like work and toil and always evoked miserable memories of long, frigid days soaked to the bone. Of having to squint through the rain and the fog of my own breath at my pruned fingertips to see what they were doing since any and all sense of feeling had long ago been swept away by ice-cold water.

    Yet here I find myself drawn to a scent that embodies that very place of torment. You see, before the work of a young man was the play of a child who built forts and bonfires from the many stems that washed up on the shores of those same stretches of sand. What Sarah found on Moonstone beach and emulated in a fragrance is the joy that I found in similar places as a child. And when Steven described iso E super as the “sauna scent,” I was again brought back to the relief that I would find in a cedar lined banya after a week-long stretch of scratching net and picking salmon.

    I would love to give this fragrance a try. It sounds like a bottle of healing. FL, USA.

    A summer-friendly wood, as described in the intro,(effervescent as Steven says) would be awesome, especially without the huge punchy aggression so many wood fragrances have these days. A unique wood is another thing I’d love to try and the oceanic scent described here is one I am constantly looking for. Sarah’s beach description sounds a lot like the beaches of my home and I’m always looking for a scent that can take me home like that!

    This sounds interesting especially because I live in California. I love woody scents.

    Steven mentions that Driftwood is a versatile fragrance, great for the summer. He also mentioned that the longevity is 7 hours, not bad for a summertime fragrance. I WOOD definitely like to get my nose on this one.

    Steven makes this sound like something lovely that my collection is currently missing: a woodsy summer fragrance, with a hint of smoke and vanilla.     I love the inspiration Sarah talked about in the intro – the beach riddled with driftwood, crashing waves, and hearty succulents. There’s something so peaceful about ocean air and I think it’s a wonderful muse. Michely noted how hard it can be to create a successful summer scent, and I agree. It seems that so many simply rely on citrus overdoses, so it’s nice to get something that veers away from that. I love light, second skin types of scents in the heat. Steven praised its versatility and also commented on the iso-e super doing a great job in this one, and I love it when it’s used well as a core component. It’s more addictive than a lot of people give it credit for. Sounds like a perfect summer scent and I would love to give it a shot. Best of luck to all. I live in NC, USA.

    For those of us who live near the beach, year-round, the smell of driftwood is very evocative; the salt, the astringency and the cured wood. I live near the Atlantic Ocean, so I imagine my concept of a driftwood scent is somewhat different than the California coast variety. I love how Steven breaks down a fragrance and appreciates his description of the versatility of Driftwood. MD, USA.

    I have yet to try a fragrance from this house. Steven has piqued my attention with this Sarah Horowitz creation. I like the sound of a citrusy woody centric scent for the warmer weather..and this sounds like it would vibe well with my taste.

    I really like Steven’s videos, and liked his analysis of the scent being not too much a citrus, and not too much woody – it sounds like the best of both for a summer scent. I have stalked Sarah’s site selecting samples, but can’t narrow down my choices. I enjoyed Sarah’s description of how she starts a scent, and will definitely look at Perfect Veil for a sample!     Steven as always presents in an unbiased and professional manner. When he validated that this is a solid summertime freshie with longevity. I like that this composition isn’t overly complicated but I know the perfumer took her time and knew which direction she wanted to take this in. Sometimes simplicity can be key and in this I’m familiar with all ingredients and i would like to see how they intertwine and play off each other. From Jacksonville, NC

    Ah, summer without a sun tan oil vibe. This sounds energizing and elegant at the same time and we all know that New Yorkers want to smell like Californians in the summer.     Fell in love with sea salt in fresh fragrances ever since smelling Jo Malone’s Wood Sage and Sea Salt. Really enjoyed the depth of both Steven, Sarah, and Michelyn’s introduction and review. The citrus opening that develops into it’s namesake, along with Iso E Super sounds like an incredible combination for the hot weather. Very curious on the vanilla’s supporting role.

    Sarah’s introduction made me what to explore Moonstone Beach, looking for driftwood to smell, Steven’s video review highlighted the fact that Driftwood is not just a citrusy fragrance. The woods and vanilla, as well as the sea salt make it unique, perfect for casual and dressed-up occasions.

    It’s really hard to find a good woody fragrance for hot weather. The combination of effervescent citrus, saltiness and that woodiness really makes me think of beach driftwood on a warm afternoon.
