Perfumes numbered with the birth years of such renowned writers such as 1873 Colette, 1804 George Sand, 1725 Casanova, and1829 Jules Verne sit alongside others in the scented library of Gerald Ghislain, founder and Creative Director of Histoires de Parfums, where fragrances are storytellers. In 2015, when he introduced the “This is Not a Blue Bottle” series, he left the library, for an abstract art gallery where the  scented stories do not become known until they open on the skin. The first in the series 1.1 was composed by Julien Rasquinet, now of CPL Aromas, who is also the story-teller for Histoires de Parfums This is Not Blue Bottle 1.7 -Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief

To introduce Steven’s video, I asked Gérald Ghislain to write about his creative process with Julien Rasquinet:

Unlike my other fragrances, as you wrote, the blue collection is less about narrative and more about spontaneous inspiration. The number 7 symbolizes luck and joy, and I envisioned a contrast between vibrant yellow and our deep blue. Julien and I brainstormed, and the idea and scent emerged naturally: a radiant, sun-kissed fragrance. We both loved the nostalgic scent of old sunscreen from the ’70s. -Sometimes, a simple story makes a great perfume! – Gérald Ghislain founder of Histoires de Parfums

Notes: Pink pepper, coconut, ozonic accord, rose, lily of the valley, frangipani, vanilla, sandalwood and musk

  • As a fan of the original “This is not a blue bottle,” I am really interested in the new contrast noted in the intro, and Steven’s review confirmed that it doesn’t smell like modern suntan lotion, but more like the sunny days of old, when ingredients were more natural. Very interested in trying this.

    Much love from NJ, USA.

I’m sorry that THIS IS NOT A BLUE BOTTLE 1/.7 is sold out. Based on the comments I look forward to adding it to my collection for the summer.

I’m from King Of Prussia. I’m SO excited about this new release of Histoires de Parfums This is Not Blue Bottle 1.7 The combination of notes sound like a very special summer scent.

  • Nikolina_84 says:

Coconut, Frangipani, Lily-of-the-Valley, floral, tropical, ozonic perfume? I’m completely sold! Couldn’t sound more perfect for upcoming summer days!
Interesting story behind the brand and perfume names, thank you Michelyn for the lovely introduction.
Thank you Steven for another amazing review – love that you agree that it’s a perfect tropical summer scent and thank you for pointing out that it doesn’t smell like suntan lotion – I wouldn’t enjoy that..
    Hugs from EU. ❤️

  • Ramses Perez says:

I do agree the bottle gives a very summery/spring-like ambiance. The royal blue and mustard yellow resemble a summer day in which the sun meets the sea. The aesthetic is very abstract and I love how Michelyn described this one really comes alive once it touches the skin. Steven called the presentation a bit corky and I actually love the bottle and box and how they do transport you to a remote island. I have heard of this collection before but don’t own any bottles so this one is a great introduction for me to the house/aesthetics. Cheers from the USA.

I didn’t realize the This Is Not A Blue Bottle series started in 2015. Nearly one per year. I appreciated Steven’s review and the uniqueness of 1.7, I am very glad it doesn’t smell like suntan lotion. I live in Oregon.

  • Jessica Rauch says:

I like that Ghislain said it is inspired by nostalgic 70s sunscreen but Steven confirmed that the fragrance is modernized with a floral scent. It sounds interesting and is visually pleasing! I’m from New York, New York and have never tried Histoires de Parfums fragrance!

  • Michelyn and Steven! This fragrance sounds divine! Solar and sumptuous! My favorite might be 1804, but there are so many to choose from! ❤️❤️❤️

  • AleksCipri says:

I love this line of fragrances, but I never loved any of them enough to get a full bottle (I do own other bottles by the brand and my favorite is 1725). I’m textually excited about this one since Steven said this one is a bit different than the rest of the blue line. I like the sound of milky coconuty notes and sandalwood, but without going into a sun-tan lotion direction. Additionally, I didn’t know that the blue collection is less about narrative and more about spontaneous inspiration, which makes sense when I think about the line and how these fragrances smell. I’m excited to try this one! I’m from Illinois, US.

  • Wow the inspiration with sunscreen form the 70s sounds magical! I liked how Steven described this exotic fragrance. I ever tried this house so I don’t have a favourite Histoires de Parfums fragrance but this sunscreen composition sounds very unique and beautiful. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • I love the the concept behind this line of fragrances. It’s a bit quirky but at the same time very avant-garde and forward thinking. I love how they just sat down with no idea in mind and just examined the contrasting colors to come up with the brief for 1.7. Sometimes the simpler approaches are best. I’m also a fan of those old-school sunscreen scents like Panama Jack and Hawaiian Tropic, so this sounds quiet intriguing. I can’t help but wonder if it is at all similar to Arquiste’s Vacation line. Steven said it didn’t smell much like suntan lotion, so I’m honestly a bit confused on what to expect. He said the frangipani is quite prominent and that’s always a good sign in my book as that is a note that just exudes tropical exoticism. I’m hyped to try this one. This line never disappoints. Best of luck to all. I live in NC, USA.

  • thank you Michelyn for the lovely introduction
Wow pink pepper and coconut sounds like a nice combination.
Thank you Steven for your video review as well. I’m happy to hear it doesn’t have that suntan lotion smell and it has that cooling sensation scent. And also sounds like great longevity for a sunny scent

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the nice video Steven and the nice writeup Michelyn. It’s really nice learning about the Blue Bottle series, one I did not know existed. The timing of this review is also great, because it’s right after the article about Gerald Ghislain’s other brand, with minimalistic notes.

The presentation is really pretty. It brings to mind sipping on a cool colada, while hammocking away with the ocean breeze at a faraway tropical location. Also good to know that this does not smell like suntan lotion.

I would love to get my nose on this.

    Cheers from WI, USA

I love that his line tells stories. I’ve been able to smell a few and they are so nice! I love that Steve thinks it’s exotic! I’m glad to know Steve’s perspective as this isn’t the first “blue bottle”. Glad to know it doesn’t smell like Bronze Goddess. Longevity sounds so good!! Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • The mention of oldsunscreen from the 70s was throwing me off bit in Gerald’s intro but after seeing Steven state that it’s more smooth with the vanilla and coconut I got back excited because Julian is one of my favorite perfumers.

It was so cool discovering how Julien and Gérald arrived at the idea for TINABB 1.7, and I wouldn’t expect anything less than incredible from Histoires de Parfums—I love 1826 by them in particular, definitely a favorite. Such an amazing and very unique house overall!

Steven’s review was fantastic and it kind of dispelled the confusion I had about the scent potentially smelling like sunscreen. It sounds so well-done, and I’d love to give it a sniff one day!

I appreciate the confirmation that This is Not Blue Bottle does not smell like suntan lotion; but rather a radiant sun-kissed fragrance. I also love the idea that fragrances are storytellers! I am in CA, USA.

  • In 1978-1980, when I was playing for the College Basketball Team my T-Shirt No. was 7 and the color of the T-shirt was also blue. The blue color is my favorite, and the hostel I was residing in was presented blue for sports and other curriculum activities. The perfume “THIS IS NOT A BLUE BOTTLE 1.7” seems perfect.
I love dark, potent, heavy, challenging, and winter-season perfumes but it doesn’t mean that I am not interested in light-version perfumes for summer. I have not tried or had any of the BLUE BOTTLE perfume yet.
Thanks for your generosity. Please permit me to participate in the draw by letting my relative address in the US or Canada or UK

  • AromaDulce73 says:

This sounds like a great summer fragrance. Don’t know what to expect from a fragrance that’s inspired by an old sunscreen from the 70’s.

Steven mentions this lean’s tropical but not a coconut suntan lotion vibe. A sweet blended tropical fragrance is something I’m definitely interested in trying out on skin. This would be my 1st experience with this house.

The notes lead me to believe this will be a wonderful summer fragrance…that does not smell like suntan lotion. Looking forward to the lactonic warmth from the coconut note. Love the name 🙂

  • This sounds lovely! Gerald Ghislain says it’s inspired by suntan lotion, but Steven emphasizes that it doesn’t smell like suntan lotion…and that sounds like a great place for a summer scent to sit. And that bottle is gorgeous. My favorites from the house — 1740 Marquis de Sade and 1899 Hemingway — are both cold weather scents; it would be great to have a warm-weather appropriate Histoires fragrance. I’m in Oklahoma, USA.

  • John Gahlt says:

I thoroughly enjoyed Michelyn’s introduction and Gérald Ghislain’s insights into the creative process behind “This is Not Blue Bottle 1.7.” The emphasis on spontaneous inspiration and the nostalgic touch of ’70s sunscreen adds a delightful and personal element to the fragrance story. Steven’s video review complements this beautifully, offering a vivid sensory experience that captures the essence of the perfume’s vibrant and sun-kissed character.
My favourite Histoires de Parfums fragrance is Hemingway.

  • I thoroughly enjoyed Michelyn’s and Gérald Ghislain’s introduction, particularly the creative spontaneity behind the “This is Not a Blue Bottle” series. The idea of blending vibrant yellow and deep blue to create a sun-kissed fragrance inspired by nostalgic ’70s sunscreen is fascinating. Steven’s video review was equally engaging, providing a vivid description of the fragrance’s joyful and radiant qualities. My favorite Histoires de Parfums fragrance is 1725 Casanova. I live in Paris France. Thank you for the chance!

  • I thoroughly enjoyed Michelyn’s introduction and Gérald Ghislain’s insights on the creation of “This is Not a Blue Bottle 1.7.” Michelyn’s eloquent narrative beautifully bridges the gap between the literary inspirations of the earlier fragrances and the abstract, spontaneous nature of the Blue Bottle series. Gérald’s personal account of the creative process with Julien Rasquinet is both enlightening and heartfelt. The nostalgic inspiration behind the scent, reminiscent of old sunscreen from the ’70s, adds a unique and evocative touch. Together, they provide a deep and engaging look into the fragrance that makes me even more excited to experience it myself. Thank you for sharing this fascinating journey!

What I love about Michelyn’s/Gerald Ghislain’s intro is the association of this fragrance with iconic storytellers – really cool! Steven has the ability to make you want everything he reviews!
I take notice any time I hear ‘coconut’.

  • Shibuichi2000 says:

I liked the inspirational process that led to the birth of TINABB 1.7 – i lovelovelove the bottle (well, all the bottles from this series, they are definitely collectibles) and the statement that they are abstract artworks, revealed to the ‘public’ when they are worn.
The smell of sunscreen in scents is one that I love, I definitely should sample this out.

  • WillRhodes says:

This is a Summertime ready fragrance most definitely, Steven!
Sweet, coconutty, exotic…I love the sounds of this. 1.7 sounds like tropical paradise in a bottle, and I love that it doesn’t smell like suntan lotion as that’s often done all the time with these types of fragrances. I like that they are doing something unique by also adding that floral element, especially seeing the rose note in there.
    -In Chicago

  • A summer fragrance that is floral, ozonic, and with a coconut vibe sounds like fun. I can see the linkage to 1970s sunscreen in the notes list. Ban de Soleil, anyone? I appreciate that Steven finds it doesn’t smell like modern sunscreen but rather more natural with a definite tropical flower scent. Love the blue bottle! MD, USA.

  • Markel Bowman says:

This right here simply sounds like a summer banker. I have plenty of coconut in my collection, but this one seems like it has That freshness and added florals I’m looking for . Michelyn and Steven come in clutch & just in time for this summertime banger.

  • I found out from the written that Gerald Ghislain is the founder and Creative Director of Histoires de Parfums. And that the number 7 symbolizes luck and joy. The video said it doesn’t smell like suntan notion. I don’t have a fave from Histoires de Parfums. US

I live in Reading , PA and I am excited about this new release of Histoires de Parfums This is Not Blue Bottle 1.7 The combination of notes sound like a very special summer scent. Hope to win this

  • I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the creative process behind Histoires de Parfums “This is Not a Blue Bottle 1.7”. Michelyn’s introduction beautifully captured the essence of Gerald Ghislain’s transition from narrative perfumes to abstract inspirations. The spontaneous and vibrant nature of this fragrance, highlighted by the nostalgic scent of old sunscreen, intrigued me. Steven’s video review complemented this by vividly describing the unique and radiant composition of the perfume. My favorite Histoires de Parfums fragrance is the captivating “1899 Hemingway” for its adventurous and rich scent.

    I live in Nashville, Tennessee.

  • Laurentiu says:

I really like coconut, both in fragrances and in everything else, and I feel that together with frangipani, This is Not a Blue Bottle 1.7 would make a great summer fragrance! Thanks!

  • Thanks for the opportunity! I live in the EU. I enjoyed memory lane in the article and the accurate olfactory description in the video. I’m sure I’d like it! The house is new to me so I don’t yet have a favorite but maybe now. 🙂

  • Razvan Paroiu says:

I love the aesthetic of this bottle, and I also love summery exotic fragrances. This is definitely one I should try.

  • Histoires de Parfums Gerald Ghislain intro was fantastic as he clearly works great with Julien Rasquinet. Steven reassuringly said it did not smell like sun tan lotion

  • Sunny, retro beach scents are often a fun wear in warm weather, and This is Not Blue Bottle 1.7 includes all the right notes. Like Ghislain said in his intro, simple story, but reliably enjoyable. Steven’s review shows off how cool that bottle is and highlighted the tropical vibe, but pointed out that 1.7 doesn’t smell like sunscreen, which was at least in part what Ghislain says he intended this fragrance to resemble. Steven highlighted the floral ingredients (frangipani, then rose) and the warm, creamy aspect of the overall composition.

I’m in the USA. I haven’t tried any Histoires de Parfums fragrances. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved Michelyn’s/Gerald Ghislain’s /intro and Steven’s Video review of Histories de Parfums This is Not Blue Bottle. I loved learning more about the brand and how the brand uses the birth years of renowned writers for their offerings. It sound like Julien Rasquinet a brilliant perfumer and Gerald Ghislain, founder and Creative Director of Histoires de Parfums came up with an amazing fragrance. Steven describes this as being the perfect summer fragrance with tropical fruity and floral elements. I don’t have a favorite fragrance from the brand because I haven’t tried anything from them. I am from the USA.

  • I was captivated by Michelyn’s introduction and Gérald Ghislain’s reflections on the creation of “This is Not a Blue Bottle 1.7.” Michelyn’s articulate narrative seamlessly transitions from the literary roots of previous fragrances to the abstract and spontaneous essence of the Blue Bottle series. Gérald’s heartfelt description of his creative collaboration with Julien Rasquinet offers an intimate and insightful perspective. The nostalgic inspiration drawn from the scent of vintage sunscreen from the ’70s adds a wonderfully unique and evocative layer. Their combined insights offer a rich and engaging view into the fragrance, heightening my anticipation to experience it firsthand. Thank you for sharing this intriguing journey!

  • Oh wow a new version and I’m so excited to try it now that I know it’s not a just sunscreen synthetic note but more a vibe and a memory. I actually like a bit of coconut if done with florals the right way and this sounds promising. Plus the bottle is gorgeous. Histoires had always done well and so has Rasquinet. I am in USA thanks for the chance!

  • This is Not a Blue Bottle 1.7 has to be good because it’s been a long time in the making, I bought 1.6 four years ago in 2020 .
I believe 1.6 and 1.7 and very different, 1.6 is going through sweet but tart citrus, to jasmine, to vetiver and musk, 1.7 is more tropical solar fragrance with coconut, frangipani, vanilla and sandalwood.
Other than interesting intro by Michelyn, and the information how “This is Not a Blue Bottle” line was created in 2015, how Gérald Ghislain believes fragrances are storytellers , I’m also very much intrigued by how he said 1.7 is inspired by his and Julien Rasquinet love for “nostalgic scent of old sunscreen from the ’70s” , but Steven said the fragrance smells nothing like a sunscreen. Just because of slightly opposing opinions of the two renowned experts I’ll sample 1.7 .
I own three Histoires de Parfums bottle in total, other than 1.6 I also own Ambre 114 and Hemingway , my favorite one is Ambre 114
    Thanks to all involved

  • Sounds very interesting ! I am intrigued by this beautiful ingredients mix – Coconut, Frangipani, Lily-of-the-Valley, floral, tropical, ozonic perfume. I think it will be beautiful like 1.1 which I adore.
    Love from Italy

  • Love This is Not a Blue Bottle line very much and from the Michelyn review I just found out that the perfumer of first perfume in this line- 1.1 is Julien Rasquinet !
And this sounds very unique and perfect tropical summer scent as Steven mentioned!
