In the realm of perfumery, the creation of a fragrance that resonates on a profound level often hinges on the principle of simplicity. MOLECULE 01 + IRIS by Escentric Molecules is a noteworthy embodiment of this principle, a scent that pays homage to the understated yet captivating allure of iris in its most unadulterated form. The genesis of M+ Iris was rooted in a fundamental idea—a desire to showcase iris with unwavering clarity. Perfumer Geza Schöen, the creative mind behind this fragrance, articulated the inception by telling our Editor-in-Chief MIchelyn Camen in an exclusive 2021 interview, “M+ iris was the fragrance which initiated the M+ series. Sophie (his partner) always had a sweet spot for fragrances with iris in them. so she asked me to come up with a sheer iris fragrance for her. i wasn’t going to do the usual here and add lots of other stuff next to that as it only would have overlayed or even covered the subtle beauty of iris. so i decided to stay simple and based the iris note i created next to a huge quantity of iso e super. she started wearing it and was soon inundated with compliments from work colleagues to people on the street stopping her. i sent samples of it to London and my partners there had similar experiences with that note, so we thought we need to do something with this. while looking at the formula which hasn’t even 10 ingredients all together it became clear that this is how Escentric M+1 the concept was born.”

The development of M+ Iris was far from ordinary. In an industry where complexity often reigns supreme, Geza Schöen charted an unconventional path. He made the conscious choice to remain loyal to the essence of iris, permitting it to bask in the limelight without the accompaniment of a myriad of other aromatic materials. This decision was an inspired one.

The core of M+ Iris is an intriguing blend of three primary components: Iso E Super, with its woody and velvety characteristics, iris pallidia and Hedione© serve as the perfect backdrop for the powdery, buttery iris pallidia to unfurl its nuanced sheer splendour.

Hello from Florida, and thank you to Karl for the review!

Iris pallida sounds like it would be a smooth and wonderful complement to the unmistakeable scent of Iso E Super. I’d love to give Molecule 01 + Iris a try.

  • constraints of time, attracting those who harbour a deep appreciation for the beauty inherent in simplicity.

Notes: Iris pallidia, Iso E Super, Hedione. A beautiful description by Karl simplicity is beautiful and sophisticated this fragrance sounds like a very personal experience for each individual. Thanks a million from the UK

Notes: Iris pallidia, Iso E Super, Hedione. I am intrigued by the simplicity and minamalistic approach really makes the fragrance their own. Thanks a lot from the United Kingdom

My favorite fragrance from Geza is molecule 01. So I love that they added other notes to it because it was so abstract. Karl’s review explained that it was a simple note expansion so it remained simple and that is what I love about these creations. iris is my favorite note and i would love to experience its combination with molecule 01. the powdery feature of iris would be complimented nicely with iso-e super..

    USA

  • Thank you for the review, Karl. Very enticing and the minimalist in me that also adores iris and is an addict to anything with ISO E Super is already in love with this one.
My favorite of Geza Schöen is Escentric 01. It does magic on my skin.

I live in NJ and what made me interested in this fragrance, was the way it was described. Woody and powdery, “it summons with a gentle, inviting presence that beckons individuals inward, leaving an indelible imprint“. An amazing description! I think my favorite fragrance by Geza would be Champaca

  • I love that Geza Schoen created this for his partner.. karl review really struck me with the beauty of simplicity.
My favorite by Geza is discontinued I think paper passion
I bought m+ ginger after reading karl review a little while back from luckycent.
    It’s fantastic

  • ISO e super is such a unique type scent. I think the addition of Iris would be stunning. Hope to get a chance to try it. In maryland.

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

I love the original Molecule 01 and would love to win this version with the iris accord. I like how this fragrance allows each wearer to encounter this fragrance that is unique. I live in Maryland USA.

  • Greetings from Indiana!
I’d have to say my fav fragrance from Graz Schoen is kind of an oldie: Clive Christian’s X for Men. It’s so woody and rich. Love it!

And I love how Karl says that Molecule + Iris isn’t meant to overpower or dominate but to draw you in! That’s why I looooove love love Iris fragrances! Too often the big name Iris fragrances scream at you: IRIS!!! But it’s the butteriness that was described above that I love about it. Great review!

  • Geza Shoen has made some fantastic fragrances. He has a wonderful signature that he includes in his fragrances, even those that he does for other brands. His scents seem to have this lively effervescence to them, and they all exude class. My favorite of his work would probably be Montabaco Intensivo from Ormonde Jayne. It’s such an elegantly simple scent. It has depth and personality while remaining airy and approachable. From Escentric Molecules, I am a fan of Escentric 5, a very spicy interpretation of a summer fragrance that I feel is grossly underappreciated. I have not tried M+ Iris yet. It and the M+ Tea have had my interest for a while but I just haven’t gotten around to trying them yet. Karl spoke briefly about it having a gentle and inviting presence, which one might expect from a Molecule fragrance. Schoen is a master at this type of formula so I have little doubt that he has puled it off beautifully. Iris is one of my favorite notes, especially during the exceptionally long transition to fall that we experience here in the south. I would love to give this one a shot. Best of luck to everyone. I live in NC, USA.

  • MOLECULE 01 + IRIS looks really interesting and the kind of fragrance that does become personalized after interacting with skin. All three notes in it are those I enjoy including hedione. I am in US. My fav by Geza is Ormonde Jayne Woman.

  • ianbradleyandrews says:

Hello from Indiana. This sounds amazing and I love their other perfumes. I’d love to win this. The Iris sounds delightful

  • Having smelled several from the line I already know I’m intrigued by the “simplicity” of this line. I like Molecule 01 a lot and have yet to try Molecule 01 + iris. US

  • I both have an love wearing Molecule 01. I totally agree that complexity in fragrances seems to be king especially in the niche world. I like that Geza includes his simplistic approach not only in the formulation but in the pacaking, bottle design, etc. Cheers from NYC

  • I’m thrilled that they’ve incorporated additional notes into it, as its original abstraction is intriguing. In Karl’s review, he elucidated that the added notes resulted in a simple yet elegant expansion, which I find enchanting in these creations. Iris happens to be my favorite note, and I’m eager to encounter its harmonious blend with Molecule 01. New Jersey, USA

  • While I do really enjoy complex fragrances that develop over thw course of my day, there are still some days I prefer a simpler linear 1- to 3-note fragrance.

I want to thank Karl for this review, because immediately after reading, I remembered I brought a bottle of Molecule 1 back in 2016! I found it only 1/8 full after searching my house for an hour.

Molecule 01 has a subtle woody and clean smell, a bit like clean, fresh laundry. Totally agree with Karl that M + Iris “summons with a gentle, inviting presence that beckons individuals inward, leaving an indelible imprint.” It’s one of those fragrances that seem to wear off for the user, but people around them will definitely still be able to pick it up. For me, the scent seem to disappear after 30 minutes. After a while, you will have forgotten about it. So, whenever someone compliments me, it’s always a shocking but pleasant suprise.

Iris is a very complmentary choice for M-01, in my opinon. The floral accord is powdery and velvety, evoking the timeless beauty and grace of the iris. Simple yet elegant. The Molecule 01 blends into the skin, create a unique scent, a personal pheromone. I can’t wait to give Molecule 01 + Iris a try!

Planning to place an order for Escentric 02 and 04 as well as M + Mandarin. Will definitely be using these like crazy. Thanks again for the review! Much love from NY, US!

  • I’m still not sure how I feel about wearing perfumes with “huge quantities of Iso E Super,” but from a compositional standpoint, I love the idea of using it with just one or two other clear notes to highlight their characteristics. It reminds me of brightly lit paintings in a white gallery; the work stands out and everything else fades away. Also, I suspect MOLECULE 01 + IRIS can vary quite a bit on different skin, which always makes for more interesting interpretations of the same fragrance. Thanks for the review, Karl.

I’m in the USA. I don’t think I’ve tried any of Geza Schöen’s fragrances, but I’d love to try the M+ lineup. Thanks!

  • I love the original Molecule 01 and as an iris aficionado would love to try this iteration. Iris is such a subtle, classic note that simple accompaniments let it shine. The pairing with Iso E Super and the delicate floral hedione makes for a versatile scent, I’m in the US.

  • What appeals to me is the fact that Molecule01 + Iris is the type of fragrance that is versatile and not one with overpowering notes because let’s face it, there are times we don’t want to wear those types depending on the occasion. My favorite fragrance by Geza Schöen is Ormonde Man by Ormonde Jayne. I remember wearing a sample of this for work and a co-worker of mine complimented me on the fragrance. Thank you for the opportunity. From New York, USA.

  • ericwaynebiscuit says:

Commenting from Virginia in the US! Molecule 01 + Iris IS my fave perfume from Escentric Molecules, and I was so excited to see Karl’s review and spotlight on the fragrance. Even with my own experience with M+Iris, this review has me excited to revisit the fragrance to accompany the rest of this hot fall week!

  • Iris is a note that recently I got into it.

MOLECULE 01 + IRIS by Escentric Molecules looks like B a great addition to my collection.
I own Escentric 04, and it’s a wonderful scent. I cannot imaging how delightful this will be.

    From Massachusetts, USA

  • I love Molecule01, and appreciate the dedication to keeping the notes subtle, simple, sheet. The diaphanous effect of the ISO E super, hedione, and iris would be a perfect everyday staple. I live in CA, USA.

  • Michael Prince says:

What appeals to me about Karl’s review of Escentric Molecules M+ Iris is learning Geza Schoen made an Iris based fragrance for his wife utilizing Iris combined with Iso E Super and Hedione a molecule that smells like Jasmine to create a beautiful and long wearing experience. My favorite fragrance from Geza Schoen is M+ Ginger. I am from the USA.

  • I love iris. This simple, “Love me or leave me” scent asks the wearer to go on a very targeted journey. You can’t hide bad in five ingredients. I love that Karl describes it as”a gentle, inviting presence”. It sounds lovely. I live in NY.

  • Hello from the California Bay area. As a lover of orris and iris, I appreciated Karl’s description of the buttery *and* powdery notes they have. My fave fragrance by Geza Schöen is Molecule 1 – which I consistently get compliments on. If selected, I’ll be interested to see how the wood and buttery and powdery notes work together.

  • My favourite idea revolving around this fragrance is the ethos of less is more. Using the natural beauty of a single key ingredient and not adulterating it.
My favourite Geza Schoen fragrance is molecule 01, a gamechanger.
    I am in UK

  • Patricia Wood says:

The recipe is simple, but with a standout iris, I am sure to love this. I would love to try this one. I like both the floral and rooty/woody aspects of iris, more than the powdery aspect. My favorite Geza fragrances are bothfor Ormonde Jayne, Ormond Jayne Woman and Champaca. I am in WV, USA.

  • What is not to love about this fragrance? I’ve enjoyed every m+ release from this house. It’s hard to say which of Geza Schöen’s creations is my favourite. I like all the different m+ releases that I’ve tried so far for different reasons. I like the uplifting nature of m01+ ginger, the zesty freshness of m01+ mandarin, and the simplicity of m01. Here is m01 + iris, one of my favourite notes. I like that this is a versatile one. I live in the US.

  • I’d love to try this. I love Iris. Especially when it is in the limelight. I’ve only tried one from this line and it’s been years ago. Thanks for the chance. Usa.

Thank you for the wonderful review Karl.

I really love iris in all it’s forms, with the old Prada and Diors being my favourite.

Geza’s approach of simplicity to showcase the beauty of the iris element is one that appeals to me and is an ode to the styles of old.

I would certainly love to give this a try.

My favorite is the Vetiveral Eccentric Molecules 03
