 It was the hottest summer I can remember here in NYC. The Autumnal Equinox is September 23rd and hopefully it will bring cooler temperatures and some relief. When Video Editor Steven Gavrielatos and I chose our Indie Fall 2023 fragrances for the “three you should be wearing” co-curation we wanted to highlight smaller and independent brands that deserve more recognition.

Could there be a better name for one of our top 3 indie Fall 2023 fragrances than Strangelove NYC fallintostars? And fall you will, into a starlit autumn sky. The notes follow the nocturnal trajectory from sundown to the darkest time of evening. Seemingly lit from within by ginger, pink pepper and saffron, you can smell a trail of stardust, golden daffodil and roses which deepen into amber hues. At the base, the night gleams with resins and Sustainable oud. This is my first time wearing fallintostars and its beauty makes my head spin in the best possible way.

Steven and I plan to wear Gallagher Fragrances Septamber on our wrists right now and into “Dec-amber.” Before we discuss the perfume, I want to give a big shout out to the perfumer, the 2022 Art and Olfaction Award-Winning American artisan Daniel Gallagher. The evolution of Gallagher Fragrances Septamber follows the slow march of summer into fall and then into the chill of winter. The brightness of the neroli is like the last rays of summer sun, as the multi-hued autumnal foliage of amber, labdanum, maple and resinous benzoin are wrapped around a cozy blanket of vanilla.

Ineke Rühland, of the San Francisco-based artisan house INeKE created Fields Notes from Paris while reminiscing about her days in Paris training as a perfumer, reflected upon the words of T.S. Eliot: “Life is measured in coffee spoons.” With one spritz you are transported to a small Parisian café and the scent of Gitanes cigarettes mix with the aromas of crème from your café au lait, burning wax from softly lit candles and leather jackets. You gaze out the window from your wood bistro table and watch as leaves dance and swirl on orange blossom breezes. One of our top 3 Indie Fall 2023 in part because of Ms. Ruhland’s exceptionally beautiful use of tobacco- the flower, and the leaf.

    Field Notes from Paris sounds the most enticing to me. I love tobacco notes! I love that we’re getting introduced to new, indie house by both Michelyn and Steven because I do agree they deserve a spot too and sometimes they come with better fragrances than the big houses as they tend to mass produce their fragrances.     Oh wow, there are some real lovely ones featured here. I have just recently tried Field Notes from Paris and, as Michelyn said, Ineke’s use of the tobacco flower and leaf is so gorgeous. Steven called it enigmatic and I totally agree as it’s so unique and has a fun quirk to it that I love. Like Steven, I think it’s one of the most incredible tobacco and honey concoctions I’ve ever tried.

    Gallagher’s Septamber has me really intrigued. They are a house that has been on my radar, but I have not gotten around to sampling yet. Septamber sounds like it could be the one that draws me in. Michelyn’s description made it sound like a perfect transition fragrance for this time of year. She also touched on it’s resinous and vanillic tones, which are notes I adore. Steven lauded it’s balsamic nature and excellent performance. I love strong fragances and hearing him say “it’s no slouch”, definitely caught my attention.

    Both Michelyn and Steven described Field Notes from Paris in such “natural” terms. And I love that.

    There’s a synthetic quality to so many scents on the market. That powdery, tuberosy, smells like your grandma’s talc-y 1950’s bathroom. Bleach and moldy roses. No.

    I know nothing about FNfP, or Ineke for that matter, but the scent as described sounds “real”: like something that one might actually encounter on a walk down a street. Like a chord from a tuned wind chime.

    I would enjoy giving that one a go. Field Notes from Paris for me, please. FL, USA.

    Love fragrances that have that transitional appeal, almost seamlessly moving from one season to another. I can totally see how Septamber would give that impression, especially starting out with neroli which is a defining summer note for me. What a great description of Field Notes from Paris too. Absolutely a candlelit cafe vibe for me too and the tobacco is done exceptionally well as both Michelyn and Steven mentioned. Finished my decant of that one a few years back, so that would definitely be my pick. Nevertheless, I am intrigued about the maple accord that Steven mentions in Septamber. One of my favs from Atelier Cologne is actually Citron d’Erable – a seldom mentioned fragrance as online video reviews go – but one that features a distinct bright maple accord that I just love donning in the fall. It isn’t exactly syrupy or boozy, but gives a wonderfully sweet Canadian woodiness to the citrus and cassis. Very interested to see how it complements the other notes in Daniel’s fragrance. Overall, I can imagine autumn being a favourite season for many who adore sweet, boozy, woody and spicy scents – myself included. As the cool and comfortable weather approaches, I think all 3 are lovely picks. Cheers to those that share a fondness for the season. 🙂 From Canada.

    What an extraordinary list of Indie perfumes for fall, which happens to be my favorite season. Perfectly depicted by you both in your experience with each of them. I loved The notes follow the trajectory from sundown into evening. I also enjoyed Stven’s description of Septamber balsamic, warm, and sweet. You both made it hard to make one choice in this article.     Oh my goodness, I have worn Field Notes from Paris for YEARS! I adore it and it is one of my signature fall scents. Steven is right that you won’t smell like anyone else – I feel as though nobody has composed such a beautiful cozy waxy tobacco scent. It’s gorgeous! I live in Colorado where we sometimes have a slowww transition from fall to winter and the way Michelyn describes Septamber as following the “slow march” from fall to winter is quite intriguing and relatable. I have never heard of this house and am eager to learn more. Last but not least, I have been trying out fallintostars and it is, indeed, a flawless masterpiece like Steven says and it’s wild that everyone I see talking about it describes something of a body high when they wear these Strangelove scents! There is NO other fragrance I want more these days to wear throughout fall. Because of that, I would be overjoyed to win a bottle of fallintostars.     All of them sound interesting. I think Field Notes from Paris and Septamber are the two that fit my taste.

    Both Michelyn’s write up and Steven’s video gave me a nice breakdown of each frag and a little bit of info about the house and perfumer.

    I would love to try Strangelove NYC fallintostars; the title of the fragrance is so cool! I liked Michelyn’s description connecting the various notes to either the dark sky or the stars lighting it up. I enjoyed Steven’s description of the narcissus as enigmatic.

    I love the indie fall selections!

    I got a chance to try out Fallingintostars from a friend of mine. It was amazing; I couldn’t get enough of it! The perfume is complex, but everything seems to fit together very well. I wasn’t able to pinpoint what exactly it was that drew me in, but Steven helped me figure it out! It was the seductive and enigmatic scent of the narcissus flower.

    With Septamber, I am intrigued by the apricot and maple accord that Steven mentions. I also notice that there’s red wine. Very excited to try it out!

    Heard great things about Ineke Field Notes from Paris, but sadly I have not been able to get ahold of one yet. Love the inspiration from T.S. Eliot’s poem “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.” I’m crossing my fingers for this one.

    strangelove has stolen my heart. I have meltmyheart (to die for) and would love to try a daffodil and oud creation, fallinstars. I also love that these the picks are chock full of staying power for all-day sniffing under the tee shirt reconnections. Steven’s description of Ineke’s Field Notes from Paris is totally irresistible. Any fragrance he wants to wear on the first cool day, I want to join. Plus, as Michelyn notes, it’s a top three Indie pick for fall 2023. I appreciate the opportunity and live in NY.

    I’ve spent a few years of my life living in Spain, and I had hotter Summer experiences . Unlike Michelyn I hope the warm weather will continue for at least few more weeks.
    If Strangelove NYC FallintoStars could have been a movie caracter fragrance, it will fit Jamie Dornan and his role as Christian Grey in 50 Shades of Grey.
    From Gallagher Fragrances I know Amongst Waves, Rose All Dae and Behold Patchouli. Currently I have Rose All Dae, and I had Amongst Waves 3 years ago , it was my go-to in the Summer of 19′.
    Septamber i like for its complexity, maple, resins and amber of highest quality , and the all year round blankets of coziness kind of picture Michelyn drew in my mind.
    Ineke Ruhland is Parisian candles,leather jackets and cigarettes is a bottle

    I really like Michelyn’s poetic way of describing perfumes. It tells a great story and Steven gets to the point without much detail, but alot of enthusiasm.

    By the written review I thought I would like the Septamber best as FallintoStars has oud, which isn’t always my friend, and Field Notes From Paris sounded like it might be more foody than I like, but Steven’s video made Field Notes sound so amazing that I veered that way instead. That’s the one I would pick if I were to win the drawing! I live in the USA

    I find myself being incredibly interested with Field Notes from Paris. When tobacco is done right you just can’t beat it in my opinion and this one sounds sublime to me. It’s still quite warm in south Texas at the moment but hopefully sooner than later it will start to cool off and I start wearing some fall & winter scents and they not be overbearing. Cheers !!

    Fallintostars sounds unique and opulent. I can’t imagine the smell of this, but Steven gives a good description. I love the image in the blog post. Autumn evening, and you notice the transition of the seasons. You get from freshness with bergamot and ginger and the fragrance becomes darker; you notice the days become shorter. It seems as though the transition happened overnight. The weather gets cold but you are kept warm by the the amber and the slightly animalic oud. This is the kind of stuff I’m always on the lookout for and would choose Fallintostars if I won. I live in the USA.

    All of these perfumes sound amazing and perfect for fall, but Strangelove NYC fallintostars sounds most up my alley. I love Michelyn’s description of how the fragrance transitions from fall spices to beautiful florals to warm amber and oud.     It makes quite a while I’ve been eyeing on Strangelove NYC perfumes and the only thing that stops me from blind buying is their price.
    When Michelin says Fallintostars’ beauty ‘makes her head spin’ while Steve (having such a vast collection) admits that the fragrance is divine, I feel that I have no choice but forwarding Strangelove NYC up on my wishlist. Nonetheless, I’m hoping to win this perfume in this giveaway, which definitely would be a better option for my account statement .

    I’ve been getting into indie perfumes more and more. It’s interesting to follow one perfumer’s vision to see how they treat certain notes or styles. All three are excellent selections but I’m most intrigued by Gallagher Fragrances Septamber. The waning days of summer and beginning of fall is always an interesting time.     Half of me wants the upcoming weeks to bring some cooler temperatures, but the other part wants Summer weather to continue for a lot longer.
    ☆ FallintoStars from Strangelove NYC may not be overly animalic, but it is animalic nonetheless. I’m a huge fan of
    MeltMyHeart , to me smells like Chocolate Butter Cake with orange peel jam ,and iris. Michelyn take on FallintoStars is much closer to what i perceive , with ginger and leather. Quality fragrance, but too funky for my taste
    ☆ Michelyn and Steven co-review of Gallagher Fragrances Septamber made me think of making, and later eating Challah French Toast stuffed with honeyed ricotta, topped with macerated peaches , powdered sugar, and maple syrup. Eating the Challah French Toast , with steamed black tea is what I’m thinking right now.

    I’ve only tried Field Notes From Paris before, which is wonderful, but Laudamiel’s compositions are often stunning and I’ve been meaning to try Septamber. I’m particularly interested in Laudamiel’s work with oud for Strangelove. Thanks for the great list!

    Michelyn captured the autumnal tones of these three fragrances beautifully. I like how she painted a scene for each. Steven’s video was—as usual—very detailed, and I like how he compared the darkness and textural ratios of these three fall selections. Both Michelyn and Steven reminded me to return to my waning sample of Fields Notes from Paris.

    Septamber for the win! What an exceptional compilation of autumn-themed Indie perfumes! Fall happens to be my favorite season, and your descriptions of these fragrances were spot on.     I have been wanting to try Gallagher Fragrances Septamber since it release. The amber, labdanum, maple and resinous benzoin, vanilla notes are what I’m most looking forward to in this fragrance.     After the horrible , almost ice cube last Winter season we had , the sunny weather is not something I want to let go so easily. Warmer Fall would be great.

    -Strangelove NYC (Christophe Laudamiel) fallintostars is high end seduction in a bottle
    I love ginger in fragrances, and combined with different varieties of natural oud and labdanum, it will make FallintoStars more head spinning.
    -Gallagher Fragrances I discovered on Cafleurebon, I do like chocolate fragrances, I when I read The Best American Indie Perfume giveaway article from Michelyn, and watched Steven’s video, I had to order a sample , and later on a bottle of Wicked Good. Quite alluring, modern take on chocolate fragrance , smells like very expensive hand made Belgian chocolate, so realistic. Strictly cold weather through , Septamber on the other hand is less sweeter than Wicked Good, more resinous, smoky and ambery ,with wine ,neroli and tea.
    -Ineke Field Notes from Paris . I just want to know how Michelyn short Parisian love affair smells .It was some years ago, but I still remember the story about Field Notes from Paris, coffee shop, and a persistent French guy

    What an exceptional lineup of independent perfumes for the autumn season, which happens to be my personal favorite. You’ve both captured them perfectly through your experiences. The evocative name “Fallintostars” immediately brings to mind the famous idea that “We’re All Made of Stardust.” It creates a profound sense of déjà vu that truly piques my interest, making me eager to try it. Additionally, I have a deep appreciation for Oud fragrances, and Laudamiel has done a magnificent job here by incorporating the essence of golden Daffodil.     I love warm scents, so it’s a treat to read about these perfumes formulated to be worn during the fall. Strangelove NYC’s fallintostars is particularly compelling — I’d love to experience the “dulcet” tones that Steven describes. I’m also a fan of Christophe Laudamiel’s other work with The Zoo (Carré Blanc is a truly charming oddball of a scent).

    From the writeup, FallintoStars spoke to me the most. Such a beauttiful medley of elements that are suited for cooler weather – saffron, henna, and that beautiful agarwood. The addition of Narcissus and vanilla really make this pretty.

    I’m also hugely appreciate LAudmiels work in the perfumery world.

    Like Steven said the Fall is finally here , however the weather is still warm , and I’m happy I don’t have to crank up the heater yet , in contrast Michelyn do prefer the cooler temperatures.
    Strangelove NYC fallintostars I’d imagine is special really complex scent, going through a lot of phases. I’m sensing some old school vibes in it , but I’m sure the saffron and ginger will balance out the slightly animalic oud part well.
    Gallagher Fragrances Septamber checks all the boxes . I do believe in creative people like Daniel Gallagher, who know what they want in life, and most importantly how to achieve all their goals .
    From Gallagher Fragrances I own Amongst Waves , one if the best melon fragrances on the market , tropical and happy. In Septamber i like the contrast between the bright Summer appropriate neroli , with the cozy resins, vanilla, apricot and maple .
    Ineke Rühland Field Notes from Paris is small Parisian coffee shop, with candles, leather jackets and café au lait.
    Out of the 3 indie Fall fragrances , Gallagher Fragrances Septamber is the fragrance i’d like to win the most

    What a generous and perfectly timed giveaway. Michelyn’s review of fallintostars by Strangelovenyc ade me crave those soon to come autumn nights, where the sunsets and night sky get deeper and make e contemplate a lot more, which I think would be so marvelously facilitated by wearing fallintostars. I have heard much about this mythical scent, but I was intrigued by Steven’s description of it as almost comforting due to the vanilla. I also liked that both Michelyn and Steven described the notes as coming together to form something quite mysterious and head-spinning composition. I would truly love to wear it into the autumn and beyond.
    Needless to say fallintostars completely captured me and it would be my choice if I were selected.

    I loved Michelyn’s written reviews and Steven’s video reviews of Top 3 Indie Fall Fragrances for 2023. I own Gallagher Perfumes Septamber and absolutely love it’s warm sweet resinous nature complimented by Tobacco and Black Tea. I’ve heard so much about Fall Into Stars over the years with it’s rich oud, rose, and saffron combo exuding exceptional quality and performance.     Fallingtostars sounds like a unique note combination, Henna in perfumery i have never smelled a perfume with this accord, even though i know what henna smells like, it would be interesting to see how the smell turns out.

    I have tried once fallintostars and I agree with “its beauty makes my head spin in the best possible way.”, it’s incredible. Too bad the prices are out of reach for me. I’ve had a small sample of Field notes in Paris and I really liked it, the orange blossom and coriander are really something different.
    I’d chose fallintostars by Strangelove NYC. I’m in the EU.

I truly appreciate that focus here has intentionally been placed on smaller, independent brands – we should aim to shed as much light as possible on their unique offerings at all times! Oh my, the way Steven listed the notes of Fallintostars – and I love all of them – and then just described it as divine, I was sold on it. And Michelyn’s description of Fallintostars following the nocturnal trajectory from sundown to the darkest time of evening has drawn me even closer to it. The notes of Septamber stole my heart too – balsamic fragrances are unbeatable in autumn. And again, we are being taken on a journey, this time through seasonal transitions. Field Notes from Paris (what an intriguing name for a perfume!) sounds like another exquisite creation. The comparisons to Dreamer (which I happen to know well and like a lot) sound interesting but who wouldn’t opt for a more natural smelling concoction? The time I spent in Paris was too short to be able to recline in an atmospheric cafe and watch the world go by but Field Notes from Paris sounds like it would fill that gap beautifully.
    I am in Europe so will pick Fallintostars though I am really hoping to have the opportunity to try the other offerings from this amazing review too. Thank you from the EU.

    Love Fall, but no cold temperatures until late October please. As usual i’ll share my thoughts on the 3 fragrances , and compare my thoughts with what Michelyn and Steven are getting.
    1. FallintoStars from Strangelove NYC , composed by Christophe Laudamiel
    People need to be aware due to smaller batches, and limited production on Strangelove NYC fragrances there are variations, and differences between different batches. It’s not just a taste, body chemistry or perception, but actual differences . I’ve smelled 3 different batches of FallintoStars, and side by side one was very animalic , one was way more floral, and one had a dominant leather note and something fruity sweet.
    2. Gallagher Fragrances Septamber , composed by Daniel Gallagher I’d categorize as a late Fall, and Winter fragrance. I do agree the neroli is there, but mostly in the opening, on my skin is short lived, and from the heart and drydown Septamber is amalgam of syrupy thick like Michelyn mentioned “multi hued autumnal foliage” of goodies. I’m surprised both Michelyn and Steven are not picking up the red wine, not exactly a boozy fragrance, still in Septamber the red wine is easily detectable..on my skin at least.
    3.Ineke Rühland Field Notes from Paris , composed by Ineke Ruhland.
    I can see the small Parisian café comparison Michelyn made ,the leather jackets, and the candles. I’m a strict teetotaller, and I don’t smoke still I know Gitanes cigarettes. In terms of cigarettes I’m not sure, because the tobacco in Field Notes from Paris is more of of leafy, and not burning ashy tobacco , it’s quite powdery too.
    It’s not fragrance related, but the correct T.S. Eliot quote is :
    “I have measured out my life with coffee spoons”
    It’s from the poem The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock
    Septamber would be great

    Hello Fall , and Fall indie fragrances
    Strangelove NYC is a brand relying on premium ingredients, uniqueness, and sustainable oud.From fallintostars i do expect bold, but not harsh unapologetic fragrance with natural oud , rose and ginger
    I’m quite intrigued by the slight contrast in our two contributors opinions of Gallagher Fragrances Septamber , Michelyn spoke of bright neroli , and the last rays of Summer sun , Steven never said anything about neroli , brightness and he seemed to think the fragrance is sweeter and more powerful . Septamber sounds fantastic, cozy, warm and festive. I hope I’ll be lucky to smell the wine myself.
    I could be wrong, but Gitanes cigarettes are non-filtered , correct? In Field Notes from Paris i like the presence of two types of tobacco, both the flower and the leaf , the leather and the adventurous spirit.
    If lucky Septamber would be my choice . Cafleurebon i follow on both Instagram and Facebook
