Phoenicia Perfumes Atmos Tuberose by David Falsberg

Perfumer and olfactive artist David Falsberg of Phoenicia Perfumes has an amazing way of taking personal darkness and making it into a beautiful light and inspiring others. His fragrances can come with dark sounding names, they speak of elements of his life, like his cult hit Skin Graft, but there’s a gentle heart beating in his scents.  David has lived more lives than many; I love hearing about his adventures in the NYC art world, Paper Magazine, all the post punk and disco bars, its like how LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy sang ‘I was there…’ in Losing My Edge, well David was there and there’s a book and a half waiting to be written about his life.

Part of his life has already been put into words in his book ‘Coma Life So Beautiful’, it chronicles a year of his life-threatening ordeal with Stevens Johnson Syndrome, and you can read more about it in his CaFleureBon American Perfumery Profile here.

Coma Life so beautiful by David Falsberg

J’s copy of Coma Life So Beautiful with Skin Graft, PTSD and Real Oud.

This book was shown at Olfactory Art Keller Gallery in New York in 2021 as part of a show about scent and body trauma, the book is also dowsed in his fragrance PTSD, a limited edition perfume he made for the Exhibition and also a super limited smaller release for charity. I bought one of the 15ml limited batch, but would love to have 100mls of it to bath in. Reading his surreal coma dreams while smelling PTSD was wild, the perfume is a powerful strange psychedelic floral that morphs between a dirty tuberose, jasmine and something more crystalline, like a body wrapped in this strange fuzzy floral cloud, it puts you in his mind as his brain tries to deal with an array of horrific ordeals his body is experiencing, while he’s off on wild adventures letting his subconscious go diving in his memories keeping him alive. It reads like contemporary experimental fiction that blurs with his past, as he fights for life. It reminds me of writers like Kathy Acker, Dennis Cooper, William Burroughs and Blake Butler, feeling very contemporary with his mind lost in a simulation that’s somewhere between a computer game and internet scrolling. The perfume PTSD sounds deeply terrifying, yet it’s stunning and here in Phoenicia Perfumes Atmos Tuberose he gives us more floral beauty.

Phoenicia Perfumes, Raspbery M’oud, Gone but Not and Deep Musc

Some of J’s collection of Phoenicia Perfumes: Raspberry M’oud, Gone but Not and Deep Musc

Phoenicia Perfumes Atmos Tuberose continues his floral adventures and follows on from Talon and Feather Attar, both used stunning florals with creamy rich complex sandalwoods. They feel like Indian Attars expanded and enriched with more traditional materials and ouds, David loves his oud and it shows as he draws out the beautiful aspects of this complex material. I highly recommend Deep Musc or his Real Oud Flex, if you’re feeling adventurous. Atmos Tuberose is one for those lovers of the sensual side of this sexy white floral and the creamy rich magic of sandalwood.

A glimmer of rich powdery sandalwood flashes as the needle hits the groove of Phoenicia Perfumes Atmos Tuberose making citruses and aromatics explode with a bright freshness. Ginger and cardamom emphasis the powdery creamy haze as bergamot and yuzu highlight the subtle sour facets of sandalwood making it deliciously fleshy, a tangerine dream drips with sweetness whispering of florals yet to bloom. The stunning sandalwood is turned up to 11, deep, rich and creamy, giving a high-energy feel as floral notes bubble up in an arpeggio of flowers. Osmanthus sings sweetly, working its groove into the oud, modulating the woods and softening the haze, letting ylang ylang gets slinky and sleek on the floor. The heart of the groove blooms with a thick sensual, seductive tuberose, whose melody clicks into the sandalwood groove, letting the bright citruses and bouquet of florals shimmer above like hi-hats.

A beautiful bitable thick tuberose gets cosy in a bed of warm hay, as sandalwood teases out some spiced animalic whispers with civet do its magic dance, making the florals feel velvety and sensual. Phoenicia Perfumes Atmos Tuberose’s tuberose and Timor sandalwood blend into a creamy sensual musk, almost like its petals are unravelling into the wood, love on the dance floor. You get lost in the moment as the scent of opulent woods washes over you, it’s Zen-like, as if very high grade Mysore sandalwood is heated, imagine a beautiful dry white musky soft smoke and buttery woody aroma enveloping a sensual spiced tuberose, laying in soft hay. Malay oud works so well with the tonka bean, both have a biscuit like facet, giving a dry toasted feel to the woods. More Damascus rose blooms with a darker richness pushing the tuberose close to heady, tweaking its EQ, giving waxy whispers and balsamic undertones moving over rich woods. Smelling up close you get a complex intense experience where David is working like a DJ, mixing tempos and genres from around the world into this seamless groove, but in the air around you it’s almost like your experience is in slow motion, your eyes lock on a sexy sensual tuberose in a smoky sandalwood haze, dancing in slow motion, feeling elegant and opulent as the clubs lights highlight different aspects, from the start to the end of the long set. Groove is in the heart of Phoenicia Perfumes Atmos Tuberose.

Notes: Bergamot, Tangerine, Yuzu, Anise star, Cardamom, Ginger, Elemi, Coriander, Hay, Tuberose, Linden blossom, Rose damascus, Osmanthus, Ylang, Cedar Himalaya, Cypriol heart, Siam wood, Udd attar, Sandalwood primo, Suganda, Tonka bean, Malay oud, East Thai oud, Ethical civet, Ambergris aged.

  • Oh I just love @wearescentient’s reviews on Instagram! The likening of perfumer to DJ in this review captivated me. I am a tuberose fiend and the description and storytelling in this review have me adding this to my must try list. I’m based in Colorado, USA.

  • David is a brilliant perfumer and an incredible person. I admire him so much and love reading about him on Cafleurebon. I think this article is awesome

If anyone hasn’t tried Phoenicia Perfumes yet, I highly recommend it. David uses exceptionally high quality materials, and he is really able to capture a vivid story in each of his fragrances. Skin Graft and Raspberry M’Oud hold a special place in my heart, and I know Atmos Tuberose is going to be a work of art.

    Fantastic article ❤️

  • Thanks for the great review.

I’m deeply in awe of David. His story, as are his fragrances are deeply moving. I’ve had the pleasure of trying Raspberry M’Oud and it is such a wonderful fragrance.

I love that Atmos Tuberose is full of his punchiness. Beautiful animalic creamy tuberose, paired with citruses and spices to open it up and cut it away and some wonderful woods. I also see that he has used an Udd Attar, which is a blen of Kadam, Kewra, Mitti and Ruh Khus – an ingredient I’ve not seen used before.

Can’t wait to get my nose on this.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I’m consider buying a bottle of Atmos Tuberose. It’s definitely giving off serious, calm, and confident vibes. I could just imagine the fragrance bursting open with a vibrant citrus blending with warm spicy aromas. As it dries down, the sandalwood takes the spotlight, blending with the floral tones. The tuberose harmonizes with the sandalwood, like intertwining vines in a garden, creating an alluring and intimate dance of scents. It’s perfect! I already have Realoud and it is one of my staple fragrances. I’m super excited to try Atmos Tuberose and grow my collection of Phoenicia Perfumes. Much love from NY, US! ❤️

  • I have only recently fallen in love with tuberose. I used to hate white florals, but as I’m growing in my perfume journey I’m leaning in to them. What a riotous choice to fall into! In maryland.

  • The review piques my interest in David’s creations that speak from his life experiences. The musicality and mood imbued into the scent combination seem transcendental to the everyday.

  • so much going on, “but in the air around you it’s almost like your experience is in slow motion…” I do love me some sandalwood, and the way WeareScentient writes about Falsberg’s other scents means I want to try them too. This sounds wonderful. I’m in the US.

  • A spicy tuberose sound lovely. The ingredients David Falsberg uses seem exceptionally well-sourced and high quality. Tuberose is always a tricky note for me but I love seeing what a master perfumer can do with it. I recall first reading about David’s challenges and path to perfumery in CaFleureBon. I would love to experience Atmostuberose. I’m in the US.

  • I’ve heard so many great things about Phoenicia but haven’t had the opportunity to try them. Atmos Tuberose sounds right up my alley! Sensual and velvety tuberose sounds gorgeous. Thanks for the opportunity to win! I’m in MN, USA.

I’d love to try Phoenicia Perfumes Atmos Tuberose. I like tuberose, and I also like sandalwood. I’m intrigued to try this one when J WeareScentient describes it as “one for those lovers of the sensual side of this sexy white floral and the creamy rich magic of sandalwood.” I like to hear that the spices and citruses accentuate respective features of the sandalwood. I live in MD, U.S.A.

  • I recall reading about ‘Coma Life So Beautiful’ and thinking Falsberg’s approach to perfumery was remarkable. He seems particularly adept with rich notes at home in attars, including sandalwood and oud, but also the thickly sensual namesake in Atmos Tuberose. Interesting that sandalwood is such a main player here; it sounds like it’s the foundation the tuberose builds on in the heart, and the glue that holds all these other textures together. Atmos Tuberose sounds like an intoxicating blend. And great review, J!
