M. Micallef RedColorado Review (Urs Castelletti) 2023 + Great American West Giveaway

In the shadows of the cavernous saloon, a dusty boot and a tin spur juts from a wooden chair. A baritone voice drawls:

“Draw…”

Outside, the pounding of hooves. The sun beating long shadows to the ground. A manicured hand pulls a gold pocket watch from a silken waistcoat. It ticks like a nervous heartbeat.

Just beyond the clapboard roofs of the small town, in the middle of nowhere the flat crags of the canyons ripple red and purple, a warm wind puffs tumbleweeds that bounce along the scrub. Somewhere close by, there’s a river rushing over rocks that promise a treacherous rafting. Soon, there will be a horse tied to a tree, and the tight twang of a lone banjo. And always, a turquoise horizon to ride towards that is as broad and elusive as forever.

Harry Longabaugh and Etta Place wiki

M. Micallef RedColorado is an ode to the “the Great American West.” With its smooth-edged leather, varnished woods, and old-time barbershop tang, this is a fragrance for our romantic mythologies of rugged individualism and those quick-witted, fast-drawing, self-invented figures that populate our imagination: bank robber Butch Cassidy and his comely partners Harry Longabaugh, the Sundance Kid, and gal pal Etta Place; glamourous card sharp Lottie Deno; racoon-hatted Daniel Boone, sharpshooting firecracker Annie Oakley. But rather than go full-on rough rider, RedColorado has the polished panache of a modern EDP, updating classic references to saddle leather, pine forests, campfires in a scent that is surprisingly contemplative, sensual, and beautifully balanced.

And by the way, M. Micallef RedColorado isn’t just for the menfolk. There’s a lot of gals can sport this, too. While marketed towards men, RedColorado strikes me as completely unisex. The sparkling bergamot and cypress opening has a lovely harmony of sharp and turpenic mellowed with calming wood notes that quiets down what could have been an abruptly masculine entrée. Leather comes up quite quickly, but rather than the rough-hewn, animalic saddle hide I was expecting, this is the smell of an expensive leather trench: violet-y, smooth, with just a pinch of peppery spice. There’s a sharp whiff of tonic that suggests the barbershop, and I half expect to hear the tinny tinkle of a pianola in the background.

Annie Oakley common use

As we head down RedColorado’s trail, a mineral note and some earthy dustiness in the middle that puts rocky terrain in my mind as we move from the tonsorial parlour to the Great Outdoors. RedColorado moves forward with cypress and its dry, sagebrush aroma, and brisk, balsamic pine. A little later, there a slight smell of char, as if you just trotted by an abandoned campfire. A surprisingly soft rosiness in the heart makes me think of lonesome, lost love ballads sung under moonlight, and a comforting blanket of guaiac and vanilla wraps it up nice and warm. Guaiac is one of my favourite wood notes – while not powerful or bracing like cedar or hinoki, it adds an ambery, slightly anisic, old paper sensuality to fragrances that I find comforting and even sexy.

Things get a bit rougher in the base, where cedar pulls on the reins, and the dry earth odor of patchouli is butch enough to remind me to doublecheck that my derringer is firmly planted in my garter. That mineral note persists, and the faint smell of crackled wood lingers. But the presence of vanilla and rose keeps everything calm, and the combination of wood notes with the enduring citric, herbal top notes feels fresh and urbane, a neat contrast with the cowboy cedar and spice.

M. Micallef RedColorado dried down to a smooth, approachable, and even sophisticated leather and woods scent. It’s perfect for sidling up to a date or riding off into the sunset. Boys and girls, saddle up.

Notes: Bergamot, cypress, pine, burnt wood, cedar, rose, sandalwood, patchouli, guaiac wood, vanilla, leather.

Disclaimer: Bottle of RedColorado very generously gifted me by M. Micallef. My opinions, as always, are my own.

  • I love a smoky, woody vanilla. RedColorado sounds like the tip of a smoking gun in an old western. I’ve enjoyed some other M. Micallef scents like Ylang in Gold and Royal Muska. I would love to give this one a sniff! Hello from the US!

  • The absolutely beautiful notes that take me to Colorado absolutely strike me. I also love the bottle design. My favorite M. Micallef fragrance would probably be Ylang in Gold. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU

I can’t tell which is more awesome the fact M. Micallef is paying homage to the old American wild west or this incredible note breakdown! My favorite from this house is spiritual. I live in Boston, Massachusetts.

  • I like the concept, the beautiful colours, the place, the notes of leather and vanilla, as well as the barbershop tang. My favourite scent from the brand is DesirToxic. Greetings from EU.

  • So far the few M. Mciallef fragrances I have tried have all been impressive. Myy favorite of the bunch so far is DesirToxic, with its energetic punch of fresh spiciness atop a smooth and sexy base. Red Colorado sounds just as sexy and enticing. I love the idea of an homage to the Old West and the notes sound like they would sum it up perfectly. I love leathers but so many of them nowadays just give the same old black leather jacket scent and I’m excited to hear that this one is taking it in a different direction. Would love to have it among my collection. I live in NC, USA.

The poetic description of the wild west immediately sets you up for an atmosphere of something hot. Lauryn masterfully managed to convey the mood of this perfume. In the fragrance, I am struck by the bright contrast of masculine woody-mineral notes and floral-vanilla facets that smooth them out. So that it can be worn not only by men! But the main role here is occupied by the note of leather, hinting at a worn leather saddle, which sounds wonderful! This must be a very attractive fragrance with a strong steely core and character. Two M. Micallef fragrances I like the most are juicy Royal Mango and refreshing Eden Falls.

What strikes me about M. Micallef Red Colorado is the notes: saddle leather, pine forests, campfires, peppery spice, tonic, guaiac and vanilla. Wow! Everything I like all in one.

This is my 1st introduction to this house. Will definitely be looking into their fragrances.

  • Such an interesting description!!
Especially I am intrigued by “smooth-edged leather, varnished woods, and old-time barbershop tang..”.

This noble woody, leathery and spicy eau de parfum is nestled in a flamboyant passion red colour, evoking the mythical landscapes of the Great American West.

  • I love Micallef house. The fragrances are beautiful!!!! And I’m sure Red Colorado is amazing! The combination of the notes is very appealing! Pine, woods and leather… I would love to try it!!!! I’m from Massachusetts, US.

  • FragranceWoman says:

I am still in search for the perfect leather scent. I am glad this is cracking the code. I like that it’s not the rough leather type but rather the expensive leather trench which I love. The wood adds that western touch. The drydown to vanilla adds that softness that could make this leather suitable for both sexes. My favorite Micallef is desirtoxic. One if my favorite. Would love to try their take on leather..

What strikes me about M. Micallef Red Colorado is the notes, this fragrance would be a step out of my comfort zone, RedColorado falls under the Woody, spicy, and leather category

My 1st introduction to this house was DesirToxic, After that i was definitely looking into their fragrances.

    From France

  • Wow that sounds very American. I love Micalef’s work and own couple amazing frags, I would love to be entered in a giveaway. Thank you

  • How charming and what an unusual release by Micallef Parfums! I love their fragrances, but have always considered the house to be an example of a more “posh and French” kind of perfumery (with an occasional wink to the East). Now I’m excited to find a tribute to the Wild West in Red Colorado, that’s brave and new!
The leather-wood accord that’s perfectly fit for men and women sounds delightful. Dry and rough, yet elegant and smooth.
    My favorite is Black.
    Greetings from the EU.

  • Smoke, Rose, Vanilla, and Leather is music notes to my ears. Never been to Colorado but this will transport me close enough. Beautiful bottle as well…

  • I really like the bottle and the woodsy-leathery dry down sounds right up my alley!

So many different levels and depth to Redcolorado. It makes me think of an old saloon with men playing cards and smoking cigars. I have never had a M. Micallef fragrance, but I would like to have the first be Redcolorado.

  • I really like the mix between the citrus and the warmer, leathery notes. Usually I see fragrances that are either citrus/fresh focused, or a woody leathery fragrance. The fact that it’s unisex makes it even better. My favorite fragrance from M. Micallef is DesirToxic. From TX, USA.

  • liquidasset77 says:

My favorite is my bottle of Gaiac. Colorado is a scent pinned to my chest. exactly the essence of smoky nuances I’ve been searching for. USA Michigan

  • Very interested to try this. I’m intrigued by the barbershop element. Often, I find scents that go for a western/desert vibe to overdo it on the smoke & I wonder if the more classic take may temper that. Favorite Micallef: Gaiac. In the US

  • I was really struck by the contrasting-seeming descriptions of this fragrance as both conjuring up the Wild West, quick-drawing cowboys and as a smooth, contemplative and sensual fragrance. I’d really love to try this! Thanks for the review, writing from the EU.

  • RonaldProkes17 says:

Oh this sounds lovely! Reading the review I kept thinking of Southern Gothic novels and William Faulkner in particular. I too could hear the long lost ballads as described in the review. I am a big fan of the scenery that this scent evokes and especially the dryness described through which this is achieved. Also the paper note from guaiac wood sounds like a perfect ending to this perfume in its drydown and again bookends the fragrance with all the great literature that has been written about the great American West.

    I am in California, USA.

  • I’m a fan of M Micaleff. One of my favs is Gourmet. I do enjoy unique unisex fragrances. RedColorodo intrigues me with its cypress, pine, burnt wood and cedar notes. Sounds perfect for a walk in the woods at dusk. Thanks for another wonderful review and draw. Mich USA

  • recursivemask says:

Woods and vanilla and leather and PINE are what draw me to this fragrance. I haven’t smelled any M Micallef fragrances. Hello from the US!

  • This sounds beautifully evocative of Colorado, the woody and mineral notes combined with vanilla sound like a sunset painted canyon. I’m in the USA.

  • ElenaChiss says:

I like the concept behind RedColorado. This is the first time I hear about a fragrance being inspired by the Great American West. Sounds quite intriguing.
    Thanks for the chance!

  • Looking forward to trying what seems to be quite an olfactory experience. Starting with the design of the bottle that places you squarely in the authentic American West, and the wonderful review that only increases that feeling. You can almost perceive the extreme heat, the orange tones, the smell of earth, of wood, of a campfire, of sunsets, of forests. That is none other than the smell of adventure and the longing for a new world represented in a perfume.

My favorite fragrance Ylang in Gold.

    With love from Spain, EU

  • Lauryn painted a lovely picture of the West in her review of M. Micallef RedColorado. The evolution of notes implies it is a strong, earthy perfume, but will appeal to both men and women. I haven’t tried anything by this brand, yet, so no favorites, yet. It comes in a beautiful bottle too. I’d love to try M. Micallef RedColorado. Thanks for the review and a generous draw. From continental United States.

  • ramsesperez52 says:

I recently did an order and I got a sample of this fragrance and I do agree it is very dry. However, it’s very ambery to me and also sort of fizzy and effervescent as it lifts me up when I wear it. Also, I do get a red tonality about it which is I think why it’s called Red Colorado, it emits heat. Cheers from NJ, USA

  • The notes for Red Colorado sound like an overview of the high desert. The pine, multiple woods, leather and burnt notes speak of the arid West. The bergamot, rose and vanilla add some softness to the composition. I can see how this might lean masculine but I can definitely see myself wearing it. Favorite M Micallef fragrance is Gardenia. MD, USA

  • IvanVelikov says:

My opinion of te fragrance , according to Lauryn Beer review will come second , first I have to say designer M.Micallef hired did hell of a job , add with his technique , the bottle looks astonishing.
Personally I’m glad RedColorado is not dirty, animalic leather , but made of finest ingredient in familiar , but modernized combination , with pine , vanilla and even rose .
The two M.Micallef fragrances I’ve sampled are Eden Falls and and Desir Toxic , both are good for different occasions. Maybe Desir Toxic is slightly better.
    Thank you Lauryn, and M.Micallef

I am a M Micallef perfumes lover and Red Colorado really gets all my attention. This masculino and mineral side but with the addition of sweet notes as vanilla should be fantastic. Lauryn’s review has me reaching into my closet and dusting off my leather boots and getting ready to hit the local trails on horseback with my beautiful wife 🙂
The notes in M. Micallef’s latest creation have caught both me and my wife’s attention. This is one we both look forward to getting our nose’s on. Our current favorites from this house are Desir Toxic for me and Ylang In Gold for the Mrs.

  • I love Micallef fragrances. I actually chose to wear Mon Parfum Gold on my wedding day. One of the best fragrances from the house, that has been discontinued, was Puzzle No 2. Although I haven’t tested Red Colorado yet, I’m sure it is a great fragrance. CA, US

  • I like the woody and smoky stuff, simple as that. I have a feeling I could like Red Colorado a lot, on addition to the classic Vetiver from this house with a lot of different offerings. I’d love to win this to Germany, thank you for the draw.

  • Leonarda K. says:

Love the description of the romanticized old wild west, but with a modern interpretation. The bottle design is amazing, just like most M. Micallef bottle designs! My favorite perfume from this house is Mon Parfum Gold edition, I have a decant of it and prefer to wear it in colder weather.
    Love from Croatia, EU

  • Jeremy Upshaw says:

Wow… I won’t be sitting at a Leadville poker table full of wildcatters and eager prospectors anytime soon, pearl-handled revolver at my side anytime soon – but this fragrance definitely sounds like the perfect companion to a Leather Rose cigar and 2 ounces of High West Double Rye on the front porch with the horses running on the horizon.

I bet this is an intriguing rough and woody twist on the perennial favorite DesirToxic, with that same depth and complexity that makes passersby turn their nose up at it, in a good way.

  • Oh boy, Lauryn did amazing yet again here.
I am a huge fan of M. Micallef, being Osaito my favorite one so far.
I love that Lauryn’s description of M. Micallef RedColorado as an ode to the Great American West is an apt one. She beautifully describe the fragrance’s smooth-edged leather, varnished woods, and old-time barbershop tang, evoking the romantic mythologies of rugged individualism and self-invented figures that populate our imagination. What’s impressive is how the fragrance manages to balance classic references to the Great Outdoors with the panache of a modern EDP. The sparkling bergamot and cypress opening gives way to a soft rosiness in the heart, while guaiac and vanilla provide a comforting blanket in the base. The combination of wood notes with the enduring citric and herbal top notes feels fresh and urbane, a neat contrast with the cowboy cedar and spice. Overall, her commentary presents RedColorado as a sophisticated and approachable unisex fragrance, perfect for a night out or riding off into the sunset.

  • I’ve always had a lot of respect for M.Micallef fragrances. I do like a decent barbership scent and this seems to have hints in that direction. MM always has well blended and thought out fragrances and this seems no exception. USA. Thanks

  • RedColorado is a reversion to a Wild West era , with leather, spices pine , I felt like I’m riding a horse in Colorado prairies while reading Lauryn Beer review.
I like the color scheme of the bottle , mathes the RedColorado name well.
Delice i do smell regularly , my business partner signature scent , and my favorite M.Micallef

  • That bottle is swanky!! The red is gorgeous. I also love gaiac wood and coupled with rose, patch and other woods with a bit of char… I’m definitely wanting to try this one out. I love that they picked a region to pay homage to and hope it’s a series.

  • Wow, there seems so much more to this fragrance than I expected. I would have thought a boozy, slightly Smokey amber. But this intrigues me even more, the leather of the saddle, the pine of the woods, the earthyness, the cinders of an abandoned campfire, mellowed down by the vanilla. Do curious to try this out! My favorite Micalef is desirtoxic. Warm greetings from Belgium. Yeeehaw!

  • Christos GX says:

The fragrance would be amazing to have, iam intrigued by the bottle, the notes and the fact that the fragrance resembles the American West.Even though iam not from America, the tales of the far west always were some of my favorites, along with the movies, the outfits, everything that represented cowboys and the American West was awesome to me as a kid.I would love to experience the “American West” via my sense of smell. My favorite from M. Micallef is Desirtoxic for sure and after that Gourmet. I live in Greece,EU.

  • I liked Michelyn’s paying homage to the old American wild west.
This perfume sounds very interesting with rose, sandalwood, patchouli.
My favourite Micaleff is Jewel for Him.

  • What strikes me about M. Micallef Red Colorado is its an unisex Wild West fragrance that evokes the elements of a time of yesterday with its leathery, resins, earthy, woody but smooth enough for both cowboys and cowgirls to saddle up in a sexy romantic ride off into the sunset. Just Brilliant.
I have yet to try any of M. Micallef fragrances as of yet but would love to rope this one into my life. Thanks for the giveaway. Greetings from the USA.

  • bhernandez says:

I wasn’t familiar with the house, but RedColorado sounds like a winner for the saddle leather, bergamot and cypress, and the tonic that creates the barbershop vibe.

I have not yet smelled any of M. Micallefs fragrances. But this sounds very interesting. I love smokey and green scents, so this should be right up my alley. Greetings from Austria (EU)

  • Wild West, cowboys and cowgirls leather initially raised the concern if I would even like this fragrance. Fortunately thanks to Lauryn, I now know M. Micallef RedColorado is a refined high-class leather fragrance , it’s also quite complex, something I really like , spicy and woody too , with vanilla.
Sampled a few Micallef fragrances during the years, and most pleasing was Aoud Gourmet. First I did 50/50 split with my sister in law , and then I bought my own bottle.
    Thanks for the draw

  • What a fun, scene-setting review! I can picture the landscape and all the smells in the western air. RedColorado tells a great olfactory story, moving from citrus-tinged leather saddle, to barbershop, to rocky terrain, and on to woody bonfire. And while RedColorado features some bold notes, it still sounds quite wearable. I also love that bottle design. I’ll need to try this one soon.

I’m in the USA. I haven’t tried any M. Micallef fragrances, but RedColorado is a great place to start. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • Michael Prince says:

What interests me about M. Micallef’s Red Colorado is that it’s inspired by the old American West, Cowboys, Rawhide Leather, Barbershops, and all the classic lifestyle and history from that time period. It sounds super raw, rugged, earthy and woody, with an aromatic, herbal pine feel and of course leather. I love Lauryn’s article and detailed review of Red Colorado. My favorite M. Micallef fragrance is DesirToxic. I am from the USA.

  • Bryant Worley says:

Lauryn’s review was excellently written, I must say. I really appreciated the descriptiveness she laid down. This is definitely something. You could just imagine the smell as she broke it down. I want it in my collection.. My favorite from the collection is Desir Toxic. I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

  • Regis Monkton says:

When I first heard about M. Micallef “Royal Vintage” and “Desir Toxic” I became very interested to try them, but I haven’t tried anything from them yet. I’m very interested to try “Red Colorado”. Its notes listing is very appealing to me. Patchouli and cedar are two of my favorite notes and I’d like to see what they are like in the base of this fragrance. This is one part of the review which causes me to be intrigued: “RedColorado moves forward with cypress and its dry, sagebrush aroma, and brisk, balsamic pine. A little later, there a slight smell of char” and also: “That mineral note persists, and the faint smell of crackled wood lingers. But the presence of vanilla and rose keeps everything calm, and the combination of wood notes with the enduring citric, herbal top notes feels fresh and urbane”. I live in the U.S.A.

  • wallygator88 says:

This fragrance really sounds ‘wild’. The notes remind me simultaneously of the wilderness of the mountains, horse back and wildflowers.
It also reminds me of the grandeur of the sunsets, the vivid warmth and the intensity of the red color at the Red Rock in Colorado.

I haven’t had the chance to try this brand before.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • The combination of notes which are reminiscent of “the Great American West” makes me want to try this fragrance. My favorite from the house is Royal Vintage. KY/USA

  • foreverscents says:

I love fragrances that evoke a place, especially a place that I have never been. RedColorado certainly sounds as if it is inspired by the great West of the USA. The leather, pine, cedar and vanilla sound very well-blended here. I am curious about how the rose notes lingers with the other notes. I haven’t tried anything from M. Micallef.
    I live in the USA.

  • Lauryn Beer take on RedColorado made me think of eating slightly burned Rose Water Vanilla Cake , while sitting on a leather couch, and watching some movie with sharpshooters from the Great American West.
Desir Toxic i bought because of Gail Gross review on Cafleurebon, to my surprise it’s way sweeter compared to how Gail described it. It reminds me of Vanilla Cassis Cake .
My girlfriend also owns Mon Parfum Cristal. What a gorgeous scent,I can pull it off without any issues too , and I do . My girlfriend says it smells really sexy , and alluring on me.
Appreciate the review , and giveaway campaign.

Lovely review Lauryn! What strikes me about M. Micallef Red Colorado is how it is inspired by “the Great American West” with edgey yet smooth leather and masculine woods that are softened with a “surprisingly soft rosiness in the heart.” I love fragrances that pair the masculine and feminine in perfect harmony so this seems like a must try. My favorite M. Micallef fragrance is Ylang in Gold I live in the contiguous US.
