“The flowers of late winter and early spring occupy places in our hearts well out of proportion to their size.” — Gertrude S. Wister

It’s 5:00 PM on a Saturday. I lift my Manhattan toward my television in salute to Lawrence Welk who, surrounded by floating bubbles, is leading his orchestra in a brass-bending rendition of “Winchester Cathedral.” While I bask in the bygone glory, I think for the millionth time: I was born in the wrong decade. Then the ding of a notification on my iPhone snaps me back to 2023 and with it, the realization that I’m gratefully able to watch this technicolor epoch on a streaming service over Wi-Fi. With a whisky-infused confidence I declare these certainties: 1) The Lawrence Welk show is egregiously underappreciated and 2) a classic can only be a classic through the percipient lens of modernity.

Taif Roses

It is another certainty that Roja Dove has a masterful ability to create timeless compositions that honor classic perfumery through the assured understanding of both the golden-era and the here-and-now. Roja Parfums Taif Aoud, a glorious addition to his Aoud collection that honors the exemplar of tradition with contemporary appeal. Inspired by the mountainous region of Taif in the summer capital of Saudi Arabia, Taif Aoud is an homage to the fields of distinctively-dewy red and pink roses that grow specific to this mystical region, blooming through wafts of the ubiquitous scent of burning Frankincense and Oud Bakhoors. Taif Aoud was originally an exclusive to London’s Fortnum and Mason and is now, thankfully, getting a wider release.

This gorgeous composition opens with an aldehydic radiance akin to the distinct sunlight that foretells our release from winter. Whereas Amber Aoud conveyed a cozy fireside warmth through a deft use of ambergris and vanilla, Taif Aoud portrays a glimmering sun-drenched warmth further intensified by Roja’s sparkling signature bergamot note. Amid the Taif Rose, this opening burst is as buoyant and promising as the first day of spring. Roja’s Taif Aoud is atomized optimism. Where there can be no “good old days” without the vantage of modernity, there can be no spring without winter.

Best rose perfumes

In the heart, the lush rose is joined by ylang ylang and geranium, creating an almost-abstract floral accord rounded by herbaceous and fruity elements, further jucified through the addition of cassis. As the composition evolves, earthy notes of clove, patchouli and, of course, Aoud reveal themselves like the vestiges of autumnal foliage beneath snow melting in the sun. The Aoud is regal, but approachable and blends seamlessly with the Taif rose while the delicate, sweet smoke of frankincense burns in the distance. Classic, but never old-fashioned, the “Roja-nade” base of labdanum, vanilla and benzoin bestow a signature regality that reminds us that this composition is vastly distinct amid a score of oud/ rose combinations in the perfume world. All the while, the rose remains—evolving from dewy to spicy to gold-dipped. In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “There is simply the rose; it is perfect in every moment of its existence.” As is Roja Parfums Taif Aoud.

Top Notes: Aldehydes, Bergamot

Heart Notes: Geranium, RoseJasmine de Grasse, Ylang Ylang, Clove Buds, Cassis

Base Notes: Patchouli, Aoud, Benzoin, Vanilla, Frankincense, Labdanum, Musk

Disclosure: This review is based on a bottle of Taif Aoud graciously gifted for review from Twisted Lily. Opinions are my own.

Wow, what a generous giveaway indeed.
I love the description of the perfume as atomized optimism. Very often Rose / Oud combinations from many houses can feel heavy and kind of disjointed, because there are not enough supporting notes. What intrigued me about your description of Roja’s take on this style is how his signature base makes this combination unique as well as the use of aldehydes in the opening. All in all that makes the perfume enticing to me. As well as the fact that I have admired Roja perfumes from afar, but I as many others do not have the budget to actually purchase one. So, all this makes this perfume and Roja quite alluring to me.

    California, USA

  • Wow, this one sounds like a stunner. I love Roja’s tendency to use aldehydes to give his fragrances that bubbly pop of effervescence in the opening and I am happy that Micahel confirmed that this fragrance has it as well. I can only imagine how gorgeous the transition from sparkiling aldehydes to rich rose and oud must be. I was also thrilled to hear that this fragrance stands distinctly on its own among a sea of rose/oud fragrances in the market today. I do live in the US and am incredibly thankful to have this opportunity.

As Roja tends to do, the blend of all the ingredients is where it shines the most. What intrigues me lost is the Taif Rose note as I have never smelled it before. I love how they call it atomized optimism and I’m optimistic to win a bottle of it. No one does it like Roja when it comes to niche perfumery. Cheers from NJ, USA.

  • I’m so excited for this giveaway! Rose is one of my favorite perfume notes and I love how this one evolves from dewy to spicy to ambered. Thanks for the opportunity to win a bottle! I’m in MN, USA.

Roja Parfums have destroyed my pocketbook from Elysium and Vetiver to Apex and Enigma I have never been let down by them and since I’ve never tried TAIF Oud I would really love to win this to not only be amazed by another roja but also to inform others on my channel.

  • ROJA Parfums Taif Aoud sounds timeless. The notes are classic. Love Most rose Fragrances. Thank you for this Chance USA

  • I enjoyed learning about the history and provenance of Taif rose. I appreciate that Roja studies the classics and reinterprets them with a modern twist as we can get the best of both worlds! I’ve only smelled a couple Rojas and they were incredible. Would love to try this one too. In NY.

-Man I’ve always wanted a Roja Dove Perfume & Roja Parfums Taif Aoud sounds like a beauty of a fragrance. The presentation like always looks amazing.

-While reading the review & notes, Roja Parfums Taif Aoud seems to have a bright opening of bitter fresh Taif rose, with a woody background & a clean sharp Oud. My type of fragrance

-Overall, this is probably an Outstanding fragrance & Another masterpiece from the house of Roja. Really want this in my hands right now. Good luck to everyone entering & thank you guy for this amazing giveaway.

  • This new offering from the house of Roja Dove seems wonderful! The bottle and cap look exquisite and gorgeous.

As a rose lover, I am very picky when it comes to rose-style fragrances however I do love some roses such as Taif rose and the Bulgarian rose. It gives this wonderful calming sweet effect when I wear rose-based fragrances. The Taif rose resonates with me because it reminds me of my childhood and how my mother used Attar oil containing it and I do know it grows near the mountains of Saudi Arabia.

I am very interested in trying this potion created by sir Roja Dove and I am in love with the house as well they always come with great fragrances that Just make people stop and ask what fragrance I have on as well as the beauty of how the fragrance is blended to perfection!

  • I’ve heard so many good things about this luxury house but I still don’t own anything from it… I really enjoyed this review of Taif Aoud and how Michael describes it makes this fragrance very wearable because the Aoud is not sharp but blend seamlessly with the other notes creating a beautiful scent. I would love to have Taif Aoud as my first Roja!!! It would be amazing! Thank you Çafleurebon and Twisted Lily for this awesome opportunity!!!! I’m from Massachusetts, MA. Fingers crossed!!!!

  • I am a lover of roses, but I have encountered very few masterful interpretations of it in the fragrance world that are truly magnificent. THIS sounds like it might be one – ” evolving from dewy to spicy to gold-dipped”! I have only read about the fragrance house Roja Dove, but this scent seems like a representation of their excellence in handling rose and oud.

First and foremost…I absolutely LOVE Roja’s shirt in the picture above. It’s gorgeous! Now that I’ve gotten that off my chest, I can discuss the fragrances.
My wife and I own 5 of Roja’s creations, of which one is Amber Aoud…and yes, it conveys the fireside warmth as described in this article. Michael has captured my attention by taking my senses and moving this creation towards the warmth of sunlight…and “Atomized Optimism”. I’m really looking forward to getting my nose on this creation 🙂
    Pennsylvania, USA

  • This is amazing, big thank you to twisted lily for the opportunity! I hope to put my nose to another outstanding Roja creation!

  • I’m fascinated by the combo of rose, oud, vanilla. Would love to win this generous gift. From California USA.

  • A truly wonderful opportunity you and the folks at Twisted Liliy have given us! Thank you! Taif Aoud sounds so wonderful. As Michael mentioned in his review, Roja is a master at blending classic perfumery with modern touches. I am curious to see how he has honored the wonderful Taif region with this perfume. The blend of oud with frankincese in the heart and base sounds so wonderfully rich and would make a perfect accompaniment to the gorgeous roses the region is known for.Throw in the vanillic and labdanum-laden “Roja-nade” and I’m sure you have a fragrance suitable for a king. I would love to experience it. I live in Virginia, USA. Best of luck to everyone.

I only have read and watch videos of other people reviewing Roja’s fragrances. I don’t own any of them, and hopefully I am lucky enough to enjoy this Rose-Oud fragrance.

Roja Parfums Taif Aoud for the description, sounds like a great classic/nostalgic fragrance.

As it is currently snowing outside, reading about a perfume that feels like the first days of spring is particularly appealing. I am intrigued by the blend of the Taif Rose with the regality of the Aoud and other notes.

  • roxhas1cat says:

Thank you Twisted Lily!! I love that the Aoud is regal, yet approachable and blends seamlessly with the Taif. Loved the quote by Emerson, how true that is. I would like to own this atomized optimism!! Those notes seem like something of a dream. Great photos. Thanks for the chance. WA state.

“Where there can be no “good old days” without the vantage of modernity, there can be no spring without winter.”

I am intrigued by Roja’s Taif oud. I like amber oud a lot and the distinction between amber oud firey side with taif oud sunny side was very interesting. Roja’s rose oud must be different. The mix of fluffy notes like geranium and ylang ylang with earthy notes and oud/frankincense is not new but I bet Roja did it in a unique way.. rose and oud are my favorite notes in perfumery. I never get tired of them..would love to try it..

    I live in USA

  • Wow what an exciting giveaway! I’m in love with the floral accord, accompanied with the fruity and herbaceous notes, then settling to an earthy oud. It feels so magical and I love fragrances that take me on a ride. NY, USA

  • Atomized optimism, regal but approachable.
This sounds like another winning release from Roja parfums.

  • Taif Aoud seems like it is a modern approach to classical perfumery, deploying many notes you find in classic perfumes such as rose and labdanum. I am in US.

  • What in incredibly generous giveaway. The Aldehyde and bergamot opening notes sound fantastic. The inspiration of the mountainous Taif definitely shows through the use of rose that harmoniously mixes with ylang-ylang and geranium. I’m quite interested to see how the oud plays and shows through the more floral notes. From TX, USA.

  • ianbradleyandrews says:

This sounds great. The rose and geranium are probably delightful together. I’d love to win and I live in Indiana.

  • Joan Mansbach says:

Sounds simply magical. Just reading about the composition transported me away from my cold New York winter. There is nothing quite like a luscious rose and I would be delighted to experience it in the full flower of Taif Aoud. Thank you.

  • Oh the rose definitely intrigued me. Isn’t is amazing how a rose can smell so different depending on the region and season? It’s incredible its range and yet they are all unmistakably a rose!! I do love Roja Dove’s creations and know this is in great hands.
Thank you to Twisted Lily, Cafluerebon and Roja for the opportunity to win this treasure!

  • Roses will always bring memories of my mother’s garden. I enjoyed reading that “the rose remains—evolving from dewy to spicy to gold-dipped.” The painting has beautiful yellow roses that look like the Peace roses mom nurtured from cuttings that grew into a huge bushy display of gorgeous beauty. Thanks another awesome review and draw. Mich USA

Taif Aoud sounds incredible with its homage to dewy roses in the region combined with that perfect bergamot, the incense, and oud bakhoors. I hope I win, because I would love to add Taif Aoud to my collection. New Jersey, USA

  • banjarmasin says:

The thought of a rose that blooms in the middle of a desert is quite mystical indeed. I’ve tried and loved many rose-ouds, but never one with Taif rose. I wonder how the fresher, lemony aspects of the Taif rose will blend with the oud.

    I live in the cUSA.

  • Excellent review, and poignant tie-in of how “classics” can only become so through the passage of time. I love the classic rose-oud combinations in attar form, often sticking to a more typical interpretation of the theme. With that in mind, it’s the complexity of Taif Aoud that most draws me (ok, tied with the actual Taif rose – one of my favorite rose terroirs!) Bergamot and aldehydes seem like the perfect pairing to push the already bright citrusy notes in Taif rose. I’d love to try this perfume! Best wishes from the US.

  • Yes! What i enjoyed about the article was the mention of feeling classical yet modern and of course, the incense. I’m learning more about fragrances that I enjoy and this would be at the top of my wish list.
I live in Hawthorne, California. Thanks for the opportunity

  • I’m not sure if this is the right scent for me, but my lady would love this. I’ve only sampled ROJA but never had a chance to own one. I’d love to add this to the collection and spay some on the woman.

I can’t agree more. I like Roja ouds and I am so glad he has a new one. Rose/floral oud are my favorite. I do not remember if Roja had a rose oud except in the gulf collection but I am glad one is available. The review helped me visualize it. Sunny yet dark. The combination of floral notes with earthy notes along with a background of oud seems so beautiful. I would love to try it.

    I live in USA

  • ashrabel01@gmail.com says:

Rose and oud, what great complimentary scents! What has me intrigued about this scent would be the incense oud such as from a bakhoor burner! That sound so wonderful to associate relaxing memories with that scent in the forefront.

  • Rose and Frankincense are two of my favorite notes and this composition sounds amazing. I’ve only sampled a couple Roja fragrances and I thoroughly enjoyed them and that sparkling Bergamot note sounds amazing. Any time a fragrance can transport you to a certain place I’m always interested.

    Indiana USA

  • What a lovely introduction to spring! The Taif rose is a fresh, intense rose scent and the combination with oud, frankincense, musk and a bevy of spring florals sounds sumptuous and happy. The sparkly aldehydes in the top give this feminine composition a bubbly lift, MD, USA.

  • now this is a giveaway!! huge fan of this fragrance house.
I had the pleasure of smelling this in person and was in love. The “Roja-nade” base of labdanum, vanilla and benzoin really never gets old and really always brings their fragances together somehow. That bubbly pop that’s signature from Rojas from that aldehydes always gets me. Then you throw in that rose and ylang ylang and it is really a gem. I don’t normal like florals but this one NEEDS to be in my collection.

Roja Dove sure knows his job , no wonder almost all fragrance enthusiasts puts him on such pedestal.
My favorite Roja Dove is Amber Aoud Absolue Precieux. Mesmerizing scent , Elysium Pour Homme Parfum Cologne is one of my go-to fragrances for te past years .
I have not even heard of Taif Aoud before , but i’ll gladly wear it, such throwback to the classics , refined rose-oud combinations , with sparkling citruses and incense i absolutely love.
Thank you Michael Devine, and Twisted Lilly

  • The description of a regal but approachable Aoud got my imagination going. It sounds like Roja came up with yet another masterpiece amongst many. The base notes in Taif Aoud are also all heavy hitters in my book. I’m in Texas USA

  • The description of an abstract floral accord rounded by herbaceous and fruity elements transcends gender and could transport us above our everyday stressors. I would love to experience this new masterful creation from the elite Roja Dove. I do indeed live in the contiguous US/KY. Thanks for this exciting opportunity.

  • I have wanted to try Roja perfumes for a long while, but they are prohibitively expensive, likely due to their use of high-quality materials. I love rose/oud perfumes and like the fact that Michael Devine says that Roja Parfums Taif Aoud is vastly different from the many rose/oud perfumes out there. This seems to be an exceptional perfume and the draw is very generous. Thank you. I live in the contiguous United States.

  • Always pleasantly surprised with a Roja giveaway. I have yet to win one and those one has a blend of my favorites including patchouli and bergamot. Looking for a spring to fall fragrance and the way you describe this scent it seems perfect rose and florals aren’t always my favorites but perhaps blending into these they will work wonders. USA.

  • I love the oud series.. sweetie aoud is my favorite. I would love to win this and it would be a dream

  • Regis Monkton says:

I live in MD, U.S.A. Roja Parfums is one of my favorite fragrance companies. I love “Elysium” and “Creation-E”. Recently, I added “Elysium” to my collection. I would absolutely love to add “Taif Aoud” to my collection, and Michael’s review caused me to be very intrigued to try it. I like the idea of the floral accord in the heart with the herbaceous and fruity elements. I love clove and patchouli, and I’d like to see how they’re used in this Roja Parfums fragrance. I like how the aoud and frankincense are described, and I’m intrigued to experience the ‘Roja-nade’ base of labdanum, vanilla and benzoin. Please let me win this one.

  • Adventurous, classy ,different fragrances with its own DNA , and look , in my opinion Roja Dove is literally the epitome the niche, and high end perfumery.
Michael Devine is obviously impressed by Taif Aoud , and we know he’s right. Almost feels like the fragrance was made for him specifically.
I’m sure some would say “Oh no , another rose and oud combo” , but i would never get enough of such classy , confident fragrances , made for those who can appreciate the elegance of the aroma. Splendid rose , oud , vanilla and patchouli Roja Dove fragrance can’t be, like Michael said “old-fashioned”.
As for Roja Dove the only one I have the pleasure of owning is Elysium Pour Homme – the blue bottle, but because of Michael excitement , I really want to win Taif Aoud .
Thank for the gorgeous draw. Whoever wins , will be really lucky and happy, hopefully it would be me.

  • The Taif rose tends to smell really soft but really sophisticated. I bet this leaves an enchanting trail and has an effervescent, sparkling opening, as do most Rojas that I’ve tested. I’m interested to see how the taif rose behaves with an aldehydic opening.

    Illinois, USA

  • For some reason my comment isn’t being posted. This is my third attempt. I am interested in winning this gorgeous fragrance. I live Roja brand and own a few bottles , I wish I could afford all of them. Taif Aoud is great one I’ve had the opportunity to test it before, I doubt I’d win, three are so many people who are dreaming to win it as well. But I still would love to try.

  • The idea of the traditional rose/oud combo with aldehydes added to it? Interesting! I’ve tried several fragrances from Roja Parfums. While not all of them were to my personal taste, each one was fascinating in it’s own way and had intriquing combinations of notes. I can’t wait to try his new ones!

  • Great review, Michael. Like you pointed out, it’s challenging for a perfumer to use that ubiqoutous rose/oud combination and still achieve something that feels novel, and that’s what intrigues me about Roja Parfums Taif Aoud. Also, it sounds like the frankincense smoke note pulls this whole design together and grounds it with a sense of place.

  • Taif Aoud sounds like a wonderful fragrance. Im intrigued to smell the Taif Rose note as I don’t believe I’ve actually smelled that particular variety before. Also, just the whole composition from aldahydic rose opening, abstract floral heart, to the “Roja-nade” base sounds great. Thanks for the generous draw. From CT USA.

  • Hello Michael Devine , my fellow whiskey connoisseur
Taif Aoud is top notch elegant floral amber i don’t know, but I’m eager to try . The voluptuous blend of juicy fresh citrus, rosy from the Taif region , oud and cassis i find delightful
All Roja fragrances I have smelled are deep , and never linear , my expectations of Taif Aoud are really high now , I’ll definitely sample it.
Risque for men is in my possession – phenomenal scent , and the best Roja Dove fragrance i’m familiar with , and one of the best fragrance i’ve ever smelled. It’s marketed for men only, but it’s 100% unisex to me-as a woman i don’t have a problem wearing it.In US is known as Creation-R….don’t know why. What interests me about Roja Parfums Taif Aoud is learning how it was inspired by the mountainous region of Taif in the summer capital of Saudi Arabia, Taif Aoud is an homage to the fields of distinctively-dewy red and pink roses that grow specific to this mystical region, blooming through wafts of the ubiquitous scent of burning Frankincense and Oud Bakhoors. It sounds like a beautiful and contemporary rose and oud fragrance from Roja Parfums that I would love. I loved Michael’s detailed review. I am from the USA.

  • What truly intrigues me about Roja Parfums Taif Aoud is the evolution of the rose going from dewy to spicy to gold dipped and the clove, patchouli Aoud revealing themselves like autumn foliage from beneath melting snow with an abstract floral heart. Just Brilliant. I know Roja is the top echelon of regal fragrances and I would be in pure bliss and gratitude to own Taif Aoud. Thank you for this amazing chance. I live in CA, USA.

I loved Michael’s reference to The Lawrence Welk Show. I grew up with that on TV every Sunday evening. I hated it and loved it equally. Michael’s review of Taif Aoud describes the dewy lushness of the rose mingling with the radiant aldehydic notes and the abstractness of the ylang ylang and geranium. This fragrance sounds stunning.

    Hello from USA

  • It is the notes of Taif Aoud that have me intrigued. I can only imagine the glorious scent sitting amongst a field of roses with a lingering trail of bakhoor in the air. It must be like a piece of heaven in the city of roses.

  • I absolutely adore oud fragrances! After having been introduced to Sultan Pasha’s work through Cafleurebon, as well as adoring Sarah Baker’s Loudo, I am now on the hunt for my next oud fragrance obsession. I have heard loads of wonderful comments about Roja Parfums but as I live in rural Indiana, there aren’t many places for me to sample their offerings in person. It would be a delight and honor to have this bottle be my introduction to the brand. I am quite intrigued to discover how the fresh aldehydic notes pair with oud.
Thanks so much for this generous draw.

I’m a strict teetotaller, but I can’t help, but to acknowledge Michael Devine passion for high quality classy fragrances , and TV shows. I know both Taif Aoud , and The Lawrence Welk’s show , so I can tell.
I especially like the correlation between the fragrance, and the TV show . The Lawrence Welk was such a multi-talanted host , musician , showman and as a whole , straight to the point, genuine person. All jokes aside, I would make the same connection myself.
Just like Lawrence Welk, Taif Aoud is straight to the point rose and oud combination, a bit aldehidic, fruity, musky , with some clean variety of oud.
If you love rose and oud , Taif Aoud, and its close cousin United Arab Emirates are both must try . Despite the common belief, the two fragrances are not the same, no doubt similar, but not the same. Indeed they share most of the notes, but in slightly different proportions, and also Taif Aoud is more aldehidic, and lacks the wormwood aroma , well detected in United Arab Emirates

  • I love the classic oud/rose marriage and this sounds fabulous. The bergamot adds an interesting note. In contiguous US. Thanks!

Michael Devine take on Taif Aoud made me think of my days living in Paris. During one of our exams, we had to make the famous
Gâteau Rose au Parfum Cassis , exactly what I’m thinking about right now. Upscale special occasions rose fragrance.
Sweetie Aoud , fragrance made to mimic the smell of French Pastry Shop, and particularly freshly baked croissants is my favorite Roja Dove , Creation-E is my second favorite , hard to get invited into , old private gentleman’s club , with cognac and tobacco smell lingering all over it.

Very nice review Michael! What intrigues me about Roja Parfums Taif Aoud is Michael’s description of it’s “aldehydic radiance” that translates into a buoyant and bursting optimism at the heart of the fragrance. I have always found Taif Rose in particular to be a very bright and uplifting rose, so a fragrance that really leans into that aspect sounds very fitting and the perfect expression of the beautiful and rare Taif Rose. It makes me very eager to try it. I live in the contiguous US.

I am a lover of roses, but I have encountered very few masterful interpretations of it in the fragrance world that are truly magnificent. THIS sounds like it might be one – ” evolving from dewy to spicy to gold-dipped”! I have only read about the fragrance house Roja Dove, but this scent seems like a representation of their excellence in handling rose and oud. NY Usa
