‘Freedom to roam’ reflects an ancient Scandinavian law and an open invitation to explore all corners of the mighty peninsula provided only footsteps are left behind. ~ Skandinavisk

The Denmark-based fragrance house Skandinavisk, founded in 2012 – is comprised of equal parts inspiration, vision and philosophy. Skandinavisk embodies the belief that the tenets of respect for natural beauty, doing no harm, sustainability and responsible consumption are deeply interconnected with both practicality and pleasure. One needn’t sacrifice one for the other – and Scandinavia has certainly set us a glowing example over the years: a significant artistic and design presence, appreciation for the simpler beauties and ways of living graciously without exploiting our planet, combined with a genuine love for the environment.

I first experienced this 50 years ago, when I spent a month traveling through Sweden and Norway during the height of summer. Most of it was off the beaten path (although I visited the larger cities as well) – which led me to adventures with fishermen, farmers, forests, lakes and fjords. Sleeping in barns with livestock; hitchhiking; bathing in many lakes, washing my clothes with birch soap and hanging them on the birches to dry; being taught how to prepare gravlax and Janssen’s temptation by local folk. I was impressed by friends, both well-off and not – and the fact that how they conducted their lives didn’t vary that significantly. Social and environmental consciousness was important to each of them, and much of their free time was spent out of doors: in the woods, the mountains, the lakes, on the beach – hiking, climbing, cycling, swimming, camping.

Skandinavisk sent me abundant materials, samples; their website is chock-full of useful information. I continued to be very curious about details regarding founder Shaun Russell (you can listen to his podcast here). Shaun elaborates upon his business model and ethics, and how they continue to evolve. It’s quite a turnaround to switch from a successful advertising career in London to a completely different life in Denmark – after falling in love with a Danish gardener (who grew up in Sweden and summered in Norway) while working in Australia!  Twenty years of living and traveling throughout Scandinavia revealed to Shaun that values and manner of living were a state of mind and of being – a concept and belief bigger than any geographical location. What began with candles grew into fragrance, home and body care, and a series of brilliantly illustrated journals which reveal the compelling stories and aspects of life lived with beauty, dignity and simplicity. All Skandinavisk products are created with an eye towards decreasing carbon footprint, sourcing as many natural/local materials as possible (i.e. – candles are made with rapeseed-based wax, locally produced and environmentally safe/sustainable), along with responsible synthetics.

“While in Grasse, I met Stéphane Coez, who had never been to Scandinavia but has since become my perfumer and traveled with me across Scandinavia several times. He teaches me the magic of perfumery; I teach him about Scandinavia.- Shaun Russell (excerpted from an email sent to CaFleureBon).

The brands eaux de toilettes are referred to as chapters, or Kapitel. I chose to write about Skandinavisk Kapitel 12, a fragrance which was designated as “freedom to roam” – a foray into the trails of the highlands and wilderness which lie above the tree line along northerly borders. The beautiful images which they shared with me are from the Hardangerfjord region of Norway – just about an hour’s drive from Bergen, on the western coast. This location is known for its painterly fruit farms (apples, pears, plums and cherries in particular) and villages, and for its scenic views of Folgefonna National Park and other nature conservation areas with varied animal and plant life, waterfalls and glaciers, high mountains, and deep forests. If you can imagine a summoning of such elements, then Skandinavisk Kapitel 12 would embody them brilliantly.

Skandinavisk Kapitel 12 possesses a bracing, tonic quality from the outset. It smells of elevation, of the nascent stirrings of soil and flowing sap seasoned with an undercurrent of slightly bitter green. A faintly floral presence exists in the guise of heather: delicate, discreet, herbaceous/mossy/musky – a characteristic which feels tranquil alongside Kapitel 12 initial flourish of terpene-abundant thyme, with its complex scent profile. One of the reasons Kapitel 12 feels grounding and soothing can be traced directly back to the naturally-occurring concentrations of linalool in thyme – a compound which has been shown to evoke a sense of calm and well-being. What commences as a brisk, determined hiking pace in a rugged environment softens as we perceive the natural charms which surround us: the verdancy of scrub, undergrowth and forest, the foraging of fruit (berry notes) and herb. One experiences an overall wholesomeness manifest in the fragrance, as if by applying it that goodness leaves its imprint upon the wearer. Skandinavisk Kapitel 12 with its lingering impression in the drydown is a nuanced murmur from a wild, beauteous solitary setting. As is the case with all four of Skandinavisk’s eaux de toilettes, it recalls a recurring theme which has haunted renowned myth teller Dr. Martin Shaw for years: the immense difference between being from a place vs. being of a place. Skandinavisk fragrances sing of the being OF a place – it inhabits you, not the other way around – and in so doing, veracity is paramount and fundamental. To my mind, that is what Skandinavisk is all about.

Notes: heather, thyme, ground berries, leaf sap

I love the idea of Skandinavisk sourcing local and natural materials. I like how Ida wrote about the bracing tonic effect of the sap and and undercurrant of slightly bitter green. I live in Maryland USA.

I absolutely love earthy and soil scents. They are some of my first scent memories. I thought I was a weirdo for loving the scent of dirt and damp earth. Finding artisans who make scents for “weirdos” has been so comforting. I would love to try this!

  • Looks like Skandinavisk Kapitel 12 is a meditative fragrance. Ida’s travels from 5 decades ago show that Scandinavian countries have always been about social and environmental responsibility and this continues to be the fact today. I am in US.

  • Ida!!! ❤️❤️❤️ Everything about this review appeals to me! ❤️❤️ What a gorgeous description! “Being OF a place” gorgeous!
I’m really happy to know about houses that are seriously dedicated to sustainability (like Bravanariz or Seven Virtues, for example; so much so, in fact, that it becomes a central part of the creative process). Skandinavisk will be a Must Discover for me! Thank you for this beautiful and uplifting profile!! ❤️❤️ Thank you for the opportunity! USA

  • Ida described the Swedish landscape so beautifully and connected it nicely with the notes in Skandinavisk Kapitel 12. Visualizing the landscape along with conjuring up the smells described by Ida was a lovely vicarious trip for me. Love how this company is focused on sustainability, minimalism, and responsible use of materials. I wasn’t aware of the presence of linalool in thyme, and in Skandinavisk Kapitel 12, responsible for creating a sense of calm and well-being, though I have seen this as an ingredient in many perfumes. The list of notes is quite unusual, compared to usual, mainstream perfumes (heather, thyme, ground berries, leaf sap). I am impressed by Kapitel 12, and the brand. Thanks for a nice visual, olfactory trip to Sweden via your review. I’m from the USA.

  • I really love discovering new fragrances and more than that I love fragrances that give me new experiences. Skandinavisk, from this review, seems a fragrance house that really deserves to be more recognised. The aim of sustentability, the concepts behind each fragrance is so interesting. I would love to try Kapitel, looks something that I have not tried before.

  • This sounds very interesting, and green/herbaceous. I’m not familiar with the scent of Heather, and not own anything with that note, that I’m aware of. This definitely seems like it has all natural ingredients and no synthetics. Also interesting read about the linalool compound causing a sense of calm and well being. Thanks for the draw! US.

I really appreciated the background Ida gave of the founder’s journey, how the fragrance would make the wearer feel, as well as the company’s ethos – “Skandinavisk embodies the belief that the tenets of respect for natural beauty, doing no harm, sustainability and responsible consumption are deeply interconnected with both practicality and pleasure.”

I liked Ida’s explaining the different notes, in some cases talking about the chemicals they contain, and the effects and associations that they create or evoke. I like the idea of maintaining sustainability as a goal for any company, and it sounds as if this goal infuses both the manufacturing practices of it and the kinds of scents it produces. The international nature of Shaun Russell’s background is also intriguing. I am in North Carolina, in the US.

  • I have visited Denmark, Norway and Sweden a few times, the last time being the September before COVID lockdown hit. I adored hiking through some of the most beautiful land I’ve seen in my life. Skandinavisk perfumes have been on my to-try list for a while, because of their sustainability and reminder of happy memories. I would love to win a bottle of Kapitel 12. ~Indiana

  • The combination of mind and matter, imagination and reality is a wonderful place to create from. This sounds lovely.

  • Ida’s review is the best armchair travel! I love the idea of a fragrance being OF a place! I’m in the US, thank you!

  • John McDonald says:

I am always in awe of your reviews.
Makes me want to sniff and visit at the same time.

  • All the notes are calling my name. Thank you for sharing those beautiful photos. As a gardener, fresh air, green grass and damp soil brings me pleasure here on earth. I would love to experience Kapitel 12. Thanks for the opportunity. Mich USA

  • thee_boy_wonder says:

I think this would be a great take on something earthy and herbaceous! I’m intrigued!!

I love the progression of the products and how their offerings expanded organically. Also, really love their conscious efforts, we have to be good to our planet.

  • GennyLeigh says:

Skandinavisk’s philosophy of sustainable and locally foraged fragrance composition reminds me of fellow Dane Rene Redzepi and his critically acclaimed restaurant Noma. Both seem to draw inspiration from their surroundings and let the land guide their creativity. A fragrance which celebrates the highlands and wilderness of a Nordic forest sounds like a bracing tonic in a hot, humid summer. MD, USA.

  • Skandinavisk products are created towards an eye for decreasing carbon footprint, sourcing natural/local materials, and responsible synthetics. Kapitel 12 means freedom to roam. This fragrance is also a celebration of Hardangerfjord region of Norway. This fragrance also has unique fragrance notes I have not tried before like heather, thyme, ground berries and leaf sap. Would love to try this unique sounding fragrance.

what appeals to me most about ida’s review is how it sounds like kapitel12 evokes the feeling of walking through a forest, complete with soil, moss, herbs, tree sap, “scrub, undergrowth and forest”, even berries — because i’ve literally been thinking for a few weeks now how i’d love to have a fragrance that evokes a walk through a forest! i’m in the US.

  • I love the smell of thyme and it’s so unusual to find in fragrances! I would love to try this one. I’m in the US

  • pau.nguyen says:

Skandinavisk’s embrace of natural beauty and sustainability is something that is starting to be embraced by the restaurant industry, especially in high-end cooking coming from a Scandanavian country so it’s not a surprise that a fragrance house from the same area would do the same. It is highly admirable for them to create fragrances inspired by their own surroundings instead of doing what many other houses are doing.

As for the scent, this kind of natural, earthy scent with the notes is definitely something that is unique and seems like something that would transport me to my favorite hike. It’s definitely a scent I would love to try for fall days

I love the 50 year old travel memory. What a trip!! Not very many notes, but oh what a description. Beautiful photos. Thanks for the chance. USA.

Thanks for the great review Ida.

This fragrance evokes a sense of being in a lush oasis of tranquility, isolation and serenity, surrounded by juniper berries on a slightly cool morning. I’m also appreciative that this a fragrance composed of naturals because it requires skill and is not easy to source these days.

    Cheers from WI, USA

I have never thought about the distinction of being from a place vs from being of a place. I will have to ponder this idea. I loved Ida’s review of Kapitel 12. I truly felt a desire to roam throughout Scandinavia when I read this. I adore the scent of thyme. It’s calming and bracing at the same time to me. I admire the sustainability and craftsmanship of Skandinavisk.
    I live in the USA.

  • Sustainability should always have been a concern for all of us, but facing today’s challenges, it’s promising (and uplifting) to see artisans like Shaun Russell and Skandinavisk make it a priority. It’s also a nice thematic match to Kapitel 12 and its nod to the freedom to roam tradition. The simple list of green, tonic notes here is elegant—the thyme note is particularly intriguing, and perhaps underutilized in perfumery. Kapitel 12 sounds like a breath of fresh, wild air. Thanks for the review Ida!

    I’m in the midwest, USA.

  • The fragrance sounds like a wonderful idyll in a bottle, a journey for the senses, not just sense of smell. The Chapter idea for each fragrance is very cool, like a library or a collection of memories.

  • This perfume seems like the epitome of the outdoors Scandinavian aesthetic. Bracing and herbal, wild and fresh air, sparse and softly green. The company’s sustainability and commitment to locally available materials really resonates with me too. This is definitely a house I’d love to try out.

I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway.

I loved Ida’s review of Skandinavisk Kapitel12 learning about the Scandanavian and Norweigian Countries like Denmark, Noway, Sweden, and Finland. How everything is made with sustainability and resourcing in mind with enviromentally friendly and conscious production. How their lifestyle is revolved around nature and the outdoors. The companies natural sustainability ethos has made this fragrance based on that with a natural smelling countryside with fruit farms, herbaceous and aromatic fields, and a lush greenery and woods. I would love to try this. I’m from Ohio, USA.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I think that this company is interesting, and I appreciate it that they seem to be environmentally-considerate. I’m very interested in seeing how travelling in Scandinavia, for many years, has influenced Shaun Russell’s creative direction for his company’s fragrance releases. Also, this fragrance’s list of notes is appealing to me. I live in the U.S.A.
