Sous le Manteau Fontaine Royale

Already enraptured in the sparkling fringes of the waves, our destinies unite us in unforeseen encounters. The vaporous mist of the moment breaks into lascivious pulses of pleasure. A hint of elsewhere, of infatuation and possibilities, distils its drunkenness. The voyage is an offering that exudes its languor. – Frederique Deghelt for Sous Le Manteau©

The thrill of forbidden pleasures can attract one like a moth to a flame.  We understand the inherent dangers of pursuing the hazardous and unknown.  However, the inevitability of destiny provides us with the key to unlock the darkest and poignant depths of our innermost passions.  Such passions can undo the best of us and capture moments of blissful, illicit possibilities and so it is when entering the fragrant undercurrent of Sous Le Manteau. Intrigue and the promise of a different and darker approach is the hallmark of Sous Le Manteau.  The brand centres on the unknown and what lies beneath.  It is a venture that defies modern conventions of brazen and open acts of ouverte sexualisation and draws us back to the art of seduction, this is a truly divine gift and the opportunity to delve ‘under the mantle’ and explore what lies beneath. As founder Olivia Bransbourg asks us, “Would you like to seduce or be seduced?’

Sous Le Manteau is a French expression from the 17th century and describes objects that circulated secretly, undercover, considered too erotic and against the official powers of the time.  The range was born of the wish to return to holistic virtues and reimagine and create authentic recipes found in official books that could be reimagined for the 21st century. Olivia’s depth of knowledge and experience in the arts combined with Nathalie Fesithauer’s creative talent is a partnership that marks out Sous Le Manteau as incredibly special and for discerning individuals.

Doesn’t everyone wish to have the capacity to transport and elevate their consciousness to raise the spirits and cast a picture of themselves as unique?  Sous Le Manteau Fontaine Royale plays on the push-pull of courtship.  It is like such an encounter because you may consider yourself bold and think you understand the game only to realise that the one you dance so seductively with Wrote the Book!  This is exactly how Sous Le Manteau Fontaine Royale plays on your senses and emotions.  The juxtaposition of hot versus cold coaxing and luring you into its sultry gaze.

Fontaine Royale By Sous Le Manteau

Sous Le Manteau Fontaine Royale Karl©

Sous Le Manteau Fontaine Royale unfolds its secrets surreptitiously; its powdery floral and gourmand nuances gliding into your consciousness like a painting  as opposed to the impermanence of a photograph, leaving a long-lasting impression. Orris is the addictive ingredient which has a softness that one can almost feel in Sous Le Manteau Fontaine Royale and its velvety texture here plays a central role. We are initially met with a welcoming combination of sultry orange blossom, rose and jasmine juxtaposed with cool bergamot and geranium; whilst ambrette (musk mallow) is listed as a base note to me at least it makes its presence felt early on. The mental imprint is to come close, but not too close.  Once the citrus and minty aspect subsides the perfume begins to warm up and the gourmand characteristics come to the fore.

What I find so distinctive about the scent is its ability to marry floral aspects with an underlying latex which is extremely provocative and can be picked up closer to the skin.  At first this is not apparent, but it slowly slinks into our thoughts.  This addictive blend of rose and suede-come-latex with sweetness shouldn’t work.  It should be too controversial and strange. However, in a master perfumer’s hands it is sensational and suddenly the game of allure becomes clear. The introduction of synthetic musk, civet and ambergris – a sultry smooth and utterly carnal experience.

It has been said that sensuality is the most expensive taste and luxury in the world.  In the deep base of Sous Le Manteau Fontaine Royale the triple crown of vanilla, labdanum and styrax are utilised to bring regal status and decadence to the wearer. There seems no expense spared on the quality of ingredients and the effect is a blend of warm tones that beckon for closeness.  Once cedar and sandalwood join the symphony the effect is mesmeric and simply gorgeous. Ultimately this perfume exudes panache and is unmistakably French in its composition.  There is the hint of possibility and a ‘joie de vivre’ about Fontaine Royale that makes it perfect for this time of year.  It awakens your senses to the thought of Paris in springtime.  Blooming florals and powdery nuances mixed with luxurious gourmand facets provide bright impulses mixed with lustful desires and overtures of romantic yet drunken love.  What’s not to adore about a scent like this?  Sweet temptation indeed.

Something to keep in mind here is how scent can work with specific skin types.  On my skin Sous Le Manteau Fontaine Royale has more spiciness and emphasises the woody aspects of the ingredients such as cedarwood and sandalwood with the vanilla also being prominent.  However, this notion is completely turned upside down when experienced on a lady.  I am no expert in DNA, but the scent seems to come alive in new ways and the full spectrum of ingredients are far more on show in particular the jasmine, rose and sultrier facets.  However, don’t just take my word as given.  Who knows what beauty will unfold on any individual’s skin? You can experience it for yourself.

Notes: Orange Blossom, Bergamot, Geranium, Orris, Rose, Jasmine, Ambrette, Musk, Ambergris, Civet, Labdanum, Styrax, Vanilla, Cedar, Sandalwood.

  • The amazing details specifically interest me about Karl’s review. I live in Poland, EU.

  • Karl!!! ❤️❤️❤️ Love this review!! I think you really capture the brand vision! ❤️ I experienced a blind-tryout of Sous Le Manteau’s Essence du Serail and loved it instantly! I ordered a full bottle within 5 minutes of that first spray! By the way, everyone should join Indigo’s monthly sample program called Scented! I discovered Sous Le Monteau there & it’s just so fun! This brand does a really unique take on “vintage-feel” fragrances and I would LOVE to win a bottle of Fontaine Royale! The idea of reimagining and creating authentic recipes found in official books is what really draws me to want to experience more! Thank you for this amazing opportunity! ❤️❤️ USA

Wow, congrats Olivia and Nathalie for the Indie achievement – and Karl for the immersive journey into the realm of Fontaine Royale… When I think of quintessential French fragrance DNA, I always am taken to that scene in Goodfellas where Sandy picks up a bottle of Karen’s perfume and with raised eyebrow says under her breath… “French…” which is exactly how I imagine myself when drawing this one into my nostrils. Some houses drip with that strong luxurious, seductive lineage, and that makes this an even more exciting discovery. Romantic, drunken love? Count me in – Oklahoma, USA

  • What I enjoyed the most in Karl’s review of Sous Le Manteau Fontaine Royale is how he describes different scent profiles on men versus women with Sous Le Manteau Fontaine Royale. I have experienced the same with other perfumes. I love the earthy, woody notes in Sous Le Manteau Fontaine Royale. Congratulations to Sous Le Manteau’s Creative Director Olivia Bransbourg and perfumer Nathalie Feisthauer for being selected as a Top 5 Finalist in the Indie Category by The Fragrance Foundation Awards for Odisiaque no. 6. Thanks for the review and draw. Writing from the USA.

  • I absolutely adore rose fragrances. But this one seems so much more! The way you described the combo of floral and latex just makes it sound like a very playfull fragrance. I would love to win this! Thank you for the opportunity! I live in EU.

  • AndradaIl says:

This review was such an experience to read. Thank you for your thoughts! I love the mysterious side of the fragrance. I am also a lady, so if i could provide this fragrance the DNA that it requires to be its best, i would be more than happy to do so. Thank you for this giveaway! Greetings from EU.

  • I’m drawn to both the civet, styrax and geranium notes. All sound very unisexy to me. I’d love to try it on my skin. Congratulations Olivia Bransbourg and Nathalie Feisthauer for being selected as a Top 5 Finalist in the Indie Category for Odisiaque no. 6! Mich USA

  • Sous Le Manteau Fontaine Royale seems like a floral gourmand perfume with woody undertones. I am glad orris seems to play a critical role in the composition, too since this is a note I really enjoy. Congrats to Nathalie and Olivia for their nomination in the Fragrance Foundation Awards. I am in US.

Sous Le Manteau=under the clothes. A fitting name for such an enigmatic scent. Geranium, Iris and Civet makes for a refined and slightly animalic power house. Great review and thank you for the opportunity! Hope to win. From Romania, EU.

  • I found it interesting that there is a latex note that was only noticeable close to the skin- and that that note made you want to get closer! I would really like to smell that, I have such a hard time imagining that a latex note could work well. Thank you for this intriguing review. Writing from the EU.

A beautiful piece by Karl I am intrigued by the notes especially Orris, Rose, Ambrette, musk and sandalwood this sounds like a sumptuous scent. I agree with Karl it is the wearer who makes the perfume that little bit special. A house that I am not familiar with but I am intrigued by nonetheles. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

  • First congratulations on being selected as top 5 finalist the Indie Category by The Fragrance Foundation Awards for Odisiaque no. 6!
Powdery floral gourmand centred around orris that might or might not turn woody with a bit of mystery sounds very lovely indeed!

It is great when Karl speak about the dicotomie in this perfume between flowers and látex accords. I like also when he speaks about how the perfume can develope different depending on the Skin.

  • Need to see how it will smell on my skin. Woodyness, spicy, the manly part or flowery, as on a lady.
I live in Romania, one of the most beutiful countries in the world.

  • First of all, huge congratulations to Olivia and Nathalie!
Karl’s review of Fontaine Royale is how a seller should sell perfumes! 🙂 🙂 He makes it sound so darn intriguing, seductive, surprising and provocative! And that’s exactly what I’m looking for in my perfumes.
    I’m from EU.

  • Thanks Karl for introducing us to the intrigue and a different and darker approach in the scents that Sous Le Manteau try to do . So the under-the-counter and illicit are in the spirit of the recipes reimagined for the 21st century by Nathalie Fesithauer in this Fontaine Royale. She plays with our emotions by confronting hot versus cold to take you to a torrid end full of sensuality. This is a floral powdery with gourmand touches scent. I love Orris and here seems to play a central role. After seducing us with citrus and minty, the triplet of vanilla, labdanum and styrax brings the “regal status”. As Karl says, I would love to feel how scent come alive in my skin and which aspects of the ingredients highlights in me. My bigest congrats (felicitaciones!!) for the nomination to Sous Le Manteau’s Creative Director Olivia Bransbourg and perfumer Nathalie Feisthauer for another gem of the collection, Odisiaque no. 6. I Live in Spain, EU.

  • Congratulation Olive Bransbourg and Nathalie Feisthauer .

What specifically interest me in about Karl’s review it’s to begin with this fragrance’s notes, (powdery and floral are my thing). With his description about how the scent shift from one skin to another. But what ring a bell for me was his mental imprint for this fragrance, come closer, but not to close.
    From EU – France

  • Ambrette is one of my favourite notes, & Karl’s description of it intertwining with other notes such as floral ones or even latex tones, definitely intrigue my nose ! Thank you for this wonderful review.

  • mmm. Kinky! That latex and suede is very intriguing. As a fan of the forbidden and occult, this really draws me in. I am in the US.

  • Mirea Luca says:

Amazing review! I am so intrigued by that civet note. And with labdanum, it makes this fragrance a beast in my eyes. I am a begginer when it comes to animalic notes but I find that I am pretty drawn to them. Thank you for this opportunity! I live in Romania, EU.

As I read this blog entry, I couldn’t help but be curious about “Sous Le Manteau”, a product that “defies modern conventions”. This sort of commentary makes me think that this brand is really setting itself apart! As I am a novice regarding my perfume exploration, most of what I experience is in the category of “new”, so everything is exciting and curiosity provoking.

I am really intrigued by the fact that this offering hearkens back to former perfume explorations from the 17th century, as old and treasured recipes are explored. How fascinating!

The notes: orange blossom, rose, jasmine, bergamot, geranium, labdanum, woods, suede, and musk seem unique and creative. I’ve never seen an exploration quite like this.

I really can’t wait to get my nose on “Sous Le Manteau Fountaine Royal”!

Thank you Sous Le Monteau and cafleurebon.com for the opportunity to win a bottle. Also, thank you Karl Topham for the well executed entry.

  • Congratulations Olivia and Nathalie for being selected as a Top 5 Finalists! I hope you win!

    Thanks for the review Karl!

To answer Olivia’s question. I am the seducer. I love flirting and making people feel desired.

I would love to find out what effect the fragrance will have on my skin. I expect the spiciness and emphasises the woody aspects of the ingredients such as cedarwood and sandalwood will also be prominent on my skin as most fragrances emphasize the base notes on my skin.

It sounds absolutely delightful and I would love to wear this when I venture into the night looking for companionship.

Fontaine Royale sounds absolutely delicious! Karl describes it as an elixir of sensuality and seduction, a tool to awaken the senses and bring luxury and voluptuousness to one’s being. I also enjoyed the small psychological approach regarding eroticism in the beginning, as well as the explanation of what “sous le manteau” truly means.
I would love to win this, writing from the EU.

First and foremost, congratulations on being a Top 5 Finalist in the Indie Category!! This really speaks to the thought and care that goes into your pieces of olfactive art. I can’t wait to see what the future holds. Now for Karl’s review, what interests me most is his description of the transition of the fragrance. I am very intrigued by the concept of this perfume, and quite curious about how it will smell on my skin. I think the note juxtaposition is very smart, and I would love to get my nose on this. Kind regards from IN, USA.

  • What interested me the most in Karl’s review is “suede-come-latex” impression. I must admit that what makes the scent intriguing is usually some sort of contradiction (like in “Synthetic Jungle” by a combination of flowers with the aroma of plastic). I am familiar wirh Vapeurs Diablotines and this is really interesting, potent and spicy scent.

  • Congratulations Olivia Bransbourg on being top 5 finalist!
This fragrance surely looks amazing and is very different from everything I have tried before. The phrase that took my attention the most was: “What I find so distinctive about the scent is its ability to marry floral aspects with an underlying latex which is extremely provocative and can be picked up closer to the skin.”
The citrus, mint, the warm notes, everything is so special about this fragrance.

This is so hot, so French! Latex& suede & sweetness. And the name is “under the clothes”. With Karl’s help I can only imagine that Sous Le Manteau Fontaine Royale is that intimate scent that we sometimes have on our skin after a wild night.

I have been strangely drawn to CaFleureBon articles dedicated to Sous Le Manteau creations so Karl’s review came right in time. The brand’s concept to focus more on the art of seduction through olfaction rather than on the overt acts of sex-appeal present everywhere in today’s fast selling world, is beyond applaudable. The powdery floral and gourmand nuances enhanced by the ambrette and the mysterious, alluring and creamy qualities of orris, and then backed by vanilla, labdanum and styrax in the base is a pure dream for me. The rose & latex combo leaves me even more craving to try Fontaine Royale. Enthusiastic congrats to Olivia Bransbourg and Nathalie Feisthauer for being selected as a Top 5 Finalist in the Indie Category by The Fragrance Foundation Awards for Odisiaque no. 6, that is amazing! Many thanks from Dublin, Ireland, EU

Wow! Fantastic review! Congrats to Ms. Bransbourg and Ms. Feisthauer! I don’t even know where to start with describing how badly I want to try this one now. This review has me swooning and I love to think of how this fragrance would play so differently on each individual as if it were specially made for just you. I also loved learning about the house’s name. Thanks for the review and the draw. From the US.

  • The idea behind Sous Le Manteau is really interesting and unique which I love. I also like that Fontaine Royale is about seducing or being seduced. The not breakdown sounds great and Karl’s description of how the scent plays out makes it sound even more wonderful. Karl wrote, “Blooming florals and powdery nuances mixed with luxurious gourmand facets provide bright impulses mixed with lustful desires and overtures of romantic yet drunken love.” This line is what excites me about this perfume. The contrasts and also how Karl mentioned the difference on his skin versus a woman wearing it is also something I’d like to experience. My girlfriend and I share most perfumes and that’s an aspect we really enjoy, seeing the different nuances that are more or less pronounced on eachother. Thanka for the generous draw, from CT USA.

This sounds amazing. I loved reading Karl’s review of Sous Le Manteau Fontaine Royale. I’ve so many great things about the brand and Karl just re-enforced what I’ve heard. Fontaine Royale has several layers to it: the soft intimate florals, the carnal spicy and animalic nature, along with the cozy, woody, sweet, and resinous elements. I would love to see how this plays out on my skin. Congratulations to Sous Le Manteau’s Creative Director Olivia Bransbourg and perfumer Nathalie Feisthauer for being selected as a Top 5 Finalist in the Indie Category by The Fragrance Foundation Awards for Odisiaque no. 6. • Heat definitely interests me about Congrats to Olivia and Nathalie for their Indie achievement. Sous le Manteaus from Karl’s review is the aspect old meeting new taking a 17th century French expressions and modernizing it. Also the notes that have florals and gourmand nuances. If I have to rate my favorite ones:
    1.Cuir d’Orient
    2.Poudre Impériale
    3.Fontaine Royale/Essence du Sérail

“Something to keep in mind here is how scent can work with specific skin types. On my skin Sous Le Manteau Fontaine Royale has more spiciness and emphasises the woody aspects of the ingredients such as cedarwood and sandalwood with the vanilla also being prominent.”

Interesting, on my skin Fontaine Royale is like a love child of Bois D’Argent and Gris Montaigne (nowadays known as only Gris) by Dior , with added resinous sweetness. To be precise, to me it’s powdery ambery fragrance, with buttery iris, fresh rose , tonka bean, heliotrope, and blast of labdanum in the base.
I don’t get even traces of civet, but I get tonka bean , and the almondy facets of heliotrope.
What’s sexy, and seductive is a matter of perception , Fontaine Royale is a good, well structured fragrance.
    Thanks a lot

  • This fragrance sounds lovely and you picqued my interest when you said “the scent seems to come alive in new ways and the full spectrum of ingredients are far more on show in particular the jasmine, rose and sultrier facets.” Those are the notes that I’m most drawn to so I am so interested in trying it!

Wonderful review Karl! What specifically interests me about Karl’s review is the unique combination of powdery florals with the unusual underlying scent of latex. This contrast is very intriguing to me – I love unusual combinations like this pairing the incredibly feminine with the modern and “strange”. Further combined with animalic civet musk and ambergris this perfume sounds like something I can’t wait to try. I live in the US.
