The history of Neroli can be traced back centuries to ancient times is still thriving in contemporary lifestyle and is treasured the world over as an invigorating ingredient that is a symbol of purity, fertility and beauty.  Promoted by renowned fragrance houses and perfumers, bitter orange blossoms have been distilled to make neroli essential oil. Neroli has been favored by royalty and gentry alike and is said to have been a favorite of Marie Antoinette and Napoleon Bonaparte.  Calm, soothing and uplifting, it was also strongly promoted by Liz Earle, an English guru of natural beauty and wellness.

Prosody London Neroli Nuance is a perfume that is all about Orange Blossom.  It is a luminescent tribute to Neroli working the citrus, floral and versatile nuances together in a seemingly effortless embrace.  The presentation of Neroli Nuance hints at the colour field style of the artist Mark Rothko, the deep red orange bringing a searing spectral quality and depth.

Prosody London Neroli Nuance is a potent and elaborate take on Orange Blossom.  The liquid, a luxurious hesperidium is a symphony of marmalade tones.  It fuses perfectly with the titian coloured label and peachy logo of the brand encased in clear glass.  This all natural and organic perfume keeps orange blossom as the centre of attention, but also holds many small surprises underneath the umbrella of the sexy and beautiful main protagonist.

Orange, Red and Yellow 1961 by Mark Rothko, Image by Wikipedia©

An ode to Mark Rothko’s style, particularly his 1961 work Orange, Red and Yellow.  The pulsating oscillating energies of the painting link beautifully with Neroli Nuance.  Initially, the entrance to the fragrance begins like the effervescent fizz of a Beroca tablet dropped into a morning mineral water.  It has the photo-realism of mandarin, particularly the succulent and leathery rind, which fuses with aromatic rosemary.  This clash of acidic versus calming tones brings one’s attention immediately to the multiform nature of this perfume.

After such a confident and bright beginning, you are directly to the heart of the fragrance.  Here the scent seems to absorb the outward energies of notes and acts like a swirling vortex pulling you ever inward.  Case in point, the jasmine sambac slowly unfurls its honeyed aspects, which meld enticingly with the central Neroli theme.  Interestingly, as I discovered from perfumer Kershen Teo, Candlewood, also known as Araucaria oil (from New Caledonia) has been used and produces a soft sweet, creamy, balsamic, woody and somewhat floral ingredient. It acts as a perfect blender for the many other minor characters in this perfume drama.

Surprisingly to me, Neroli Nuance is very long lasting and it evolves over many hours.  AsKershen Teo explained to me, “If you spritz it in the morning, you will still smell it when you go to bed. It unfolds over many hours, a Wagnerian ‘Ring’ without all the shouting.”

Moreover, the clever use of benzoin not only increases the stability of the fragrance, but it also enhances the longevity and produces a soft, smooth vanillic touch.  Here deep in the base is where Neroli Nuance truly shines.  The combination of galbanum and benzoin is a comforting and a graceful warming experience.  Spring and summer are the perfect seasons to enjoy this scent.  The balmy and tranquil shades of Prosody London Neroli Nuance reflect youthful flourishing times.  Just as the colour of the liquid and richness of the perfume pervade into one’s senses.

Like Rothko’s painting, Prosody London Neroli Nuance seems to absorb all the associated ingredients from the outside in keeping the focus heavily on the main ingredient, whilst the perception of the scent continually alters with the presence of the associated notes.  Thus, the name reflects the perfume, it is a skillful rendition of the beauty of such a versatile and beloved ingredient.

  • Prosody London Neroli Nuance seems like a creamy, woody. fruity fragrance with a fresh citrusy beginning and warm vanillic drydown. It is a user-friendly wear for all occasions that lasts due to the inclusion of warm notes in the base. I am in US.

  • What a beautiful scent this is. I absolutely adore a good neroli scent, and the crisp, cool details of Prosody London Neroli Nuance make me really excited. I look forward to having a creamier neroli fragrance with touches of wood and vanilla. Seems like a very cozy scent for a night spent reading next to a fireplace.

  • I’m not familiar with Prosody fragrances but Neroli is a nice note. The closest I’ve gotten is Orange Blossom and I think they are similar. Rosemary is another one of my favorite notes and I didn’t know benzoin helped with longevity. Interesting. U.S.

  • Oh boy, I think Neroli is my favorite note for spring, hence this fragrance is surely a must try for me. What I liked the most about the fragrance is that it lasts more than usual citric fragrances, and that is a totally must for me.
    I live in the USA.
I have not tried any Prosody perfume yet, but surely will in the future.

I love Neroli, but it’s a tricky note and I have few in my possession. (I still dream of the long ago discontinued L’occitane Neroli). I love to hear it is long lasting and evolves. Makes a fragrance so much more interesting. I was most interested in it’s comparison to marmalade which is such an underrated toast topping. I am not familiar with this line of fragrances. Thanks for the chance. USA.

I have not yet tried any of the Prosody fragrances but Neroli Nuance seems like the perfect introduction Neroli is such an uplifting note and combined with benzoin this sounds like a perfect companion for the journey from winter into spring. I live in the US.

Thus, the name reflects the perfume, it is a skillful rendition of the beauty of such a versatile and beloved ingredient. What strikes me mostly are the notes especially Benzoin, Galbanum and Neroli and Jasmine Sambac. I am familiar with this house but I have not tried anything by this house so far. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

Here deep in the base is where Neroli Nuance truly shines. The combination of galbanum and benzoin is a comforting and a graceful warming experience. A beautiful piece by Karl really like the use of Benzoin and I did not know about Candlewood. This sounds like a great scent for Spring/Summer. I had heard of this house but I have got no experience with this house I am afraid. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • What strikes me is that this perfume is described as long-lasting and evolves over many hours. Not familiar with Prosody until today. US

  • I love neroli fragrances. They are fresh and uplifting. I did not know that use of benzoin not only increases the stability of the fragrance, but it also enhances the longevity and produces a soft, smooth vanillic touch. This sounds like a wonderful fragrance!

  • Thanks, Karl for defining Neroly as bitter orange blossoms note. Most of us think that there is no difference between orange blossom and neroli. But, they are different.
I would love to sniff Neroli Nuance. I am in the US.

  • I love neroli and am very curious about both the longevity and the use of Araucaria oil in Neroli Nuance. It sounds perfect for this time as we head into early Spring. I had not heard of Prosody perfumes before reading this review. Best wishes from the US.

  • This sounds like a unique spring and summer fragrance with the orange blossom, with a vanillin touch with a long lasting neroli scent. Neroli Nuance sounds like a neroli fragrance worth experiencing. I have not experienced any Prosody Perfumes yet.

  • Prosody London Neroli Nuance sounds like a beautiful fragrance. I am a big fan of jasmine sambac, especially when combined with the neroli. I am not familiar with Prosody perfumes, but judging from this review, I will really enjoy experiencing them!

  • My very favorite floral is neroli. This scent sounds amazing, and I love that it is long lasting. What a beautiful orange trip. In maryland.

  • GennyLeigh says:

Neroli is such an uplifting note. Citrus centric fragrances always improve my mood. Neroli Nuance seems to make the most of this note with the addition of jasmine and benzoin. I’m not familiar with candlewood but it seems to add a lot to the composition. Unfortunately, I am not familiar with Prosody perfumes. MD, USA.

  • Thanks for the article Karl!

CaFleureBon introduced me to my first natural perfumes with Oud Octavo and Lantern Reed from Prosody London.
They are incredible fragrances that smell unique and masterfully blended. Needless to say; Neroli Nuance immediately piqued my interest!

Summer is around the corner and my favourite note for summer has to be Neroli. Tom Ford’s Neroli Portofino and Acqua Di Parma’s Essenza are my preferred reaches when the weather gets warmer and I even wear a more affordable Neroli Woods from Banana Republic on my visits to the gym.
The fresh and clean nature of this note make me feel fresh and invigorated.

I can completely find myself in your review and even though I have a pretty good idea of what this must smell like, I am still ready to be baffled my Mr Teo’s expert nose and am sure I will not be disappointed!

    Greetings from the UK!

  • Just lovely. Aren’t scents that last all day, and have a terrific base the best? I just love them. I am in the US and have heard of Prosody perfumes, but not tried any.

  • I’m not familiar with Prosody perfumes but I love the neroli note in fragrances!!!! Prosody London Neroli Nuance Sounds amazing! I would love to try it! I’m from Massachusetts, US. Following you on Instagram as @hshinkoda.

  • In Karl’s review of Prosody London Neroli Nuance, I liked the way he compared Prosody London Neroli Nuance to Rothko’s paintings, which I have seen and enjoyed. From a cursory glance, it looks just one paint and an “easy to paint” painting, but you take time and then you start seeing the nuances in Rothko’s paintings. It takes time to appreciate such works of art. It seems appreciating Prosody London Neroli Nuance would be similar.

Prosody London Neroli Nuance seems to be perfect for spring and summer, and will bring and cheer to anyone who wears it. I haven’t tried Prosody perfumes, so don’t have any favorites yet. I like the notes in Prosody London Neroli Nuance but I am not familiar with candlewood note.

Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • I’m not familiar with Prosody perfumes, but I am intrigued by the idea of a “dirty” neroli. The rosemary note combined with the florals really appeals to me. USA

  • With summer around the corner and Spring starting this would be an amazing fragrance. Being a citrus and neroli frag thats lasting says a lot about the quality of notes. Thanks for the giveaway!! Love. CA, USA.

This was a great review Karl.

Your writeup really did justice of explaining how all the notes play into the inspiration from Rothko. It was particularly interesting to read about the clever use of Mandarin, Rosemary which reminds me of the very top of the Rothko painting.

I love the scent diagram allegory that Kershen has used.

I am familiar with this brand but I’ve never smelt them.

    Cheers from WI, USA

What interests me about Prosody London Neroli Nuance based on Karl’s review is learning about Orange Blossom and Neroli for how they are made. I love the White Floral fragrances especially with the combination of Orange Blossom and Neroli. This fragrance also has some resinous touches in the base that interest me. This is my first time hearing about Prosody Perfumes, so I will have to check them out. I am from the USA.

  • I’ve certainly heard of this fragrance house, but I haven’t tried anything from them yet. One reason why I want to try this fragrance is because I like neroli and I think that it would be good in combination with the benzoin and galbanum. I live in the U.S.A. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  • What a nice review and beautiful fragrance. Thank you Karl for this interesting description. I adore neroli based perfumes, and the crisp, cool details of “Prosody London Neroli Nuance” make me really excited to try it. Unfortunately, I did not have the chance to try any from this brand, therefore I look forward to having a creamier neroli fragrance with touches of wood and vanilla. Seems like a very cozy scent for a night spent reading next to a fireplace.
    I’m in the USA.

Very nice! what strikes me about Prosody Prosody London Neroli Nuance is how potent, heady, and elaborate it is, as opposed to so many neroli fragrances that are simple, clean, and soapy. I love a dirty orange blossom, swirling and sexy and enticing, which this one certainly seems to be.

I live in the US. I an familiar with Prosody perfumes as a brand but unfortunately I have not yet tried any yet. I am most looking forward to trying Oud Octavo as I have read many very favorable reviews regarding it.
