Five Fragrances for Halloween 2021 + Morticia’s Boudoir  Draw

Morticia inspired fragrances for Halloween 2021

Morticia collage by Nicoleta: Daryl Hannah, Charlize Theron, Catherine Zeta Jones, Carolyn Jones, Anjelica Huston  for Five Fragrances for Halloween 2021

Still having not outgrown my teen goth persona (it’s not just a phase, mom!), each year, no matter how old I get, my eyes light up on October 1 and the promise of Halloween to come makes me giddier than… any other holiday, to be honest. With a nod to other fictional ladies that have inspired my sense of style and aesthetics over my formative years (Elvira, Lily Munster or Vampiria… do you see a pattern there?), I must admit that my heart belongs to the one and only Morticia. In the 90s and before, Morticia was a real pop-culture icon, teaching pale awkward little girls everywhere to embrace being different and the valuable and ongoing lesson of living life authentically.

Still not being able to resolve the decades-long question (that faces me every year, during the winter closet rotation) of exactly how many black evening gowns can one woman have, or the impossible quest of counting how many shades of crimson red lipstick one NEEDS, I will settle on the slightly simpler task of rounding up my Morticia-esque scents to just 5 for Halloween 2021, with the help of the five actresses that have played her character, over the years:

Daryl Hannah as Morticia and Etat Libre D'Orange Putain des Palaces

Daryl Hannah as Morticia 1998 and Putain des Palaces ELDO, edit by Nicoleta

Etat Libre d’Orange  Putain des Palaces (Nathalie Feisthauer) 2006: I just love Daryl Hannah! From her badass role in Blade Runner to the visual bonanza of Kill Bill, her unapologetic raw and powerful personality just shines through in every role, including her highly personal spin on the interpretation of Morticia in the 1998 film Addams Family. What better perfume to pick for her than Etat Libre d’Orange Putain des Palaces: traces of dark vampy lipstick, the rustling of a heavy brocade dress, leather gloves, a light dusting of powder, and there she is: a sophisticated, take-no-prisoners-seductive woman who is nonchalantly wearing her beauty like a weapon, in plain sight.

Top notes: Mandarine, Ginger Orpur®, Raspberry; Heart notes: Iris, Rose Absolute, Rice Powder;Base notes: Tonka Beans Orpur®, Sandalwood, Musk

Best fragrance for halloween 2021 Etat Libre d'Orange True Lust Rayon Violet De Ses Yeux

Carolyn Jones as Morticia, 1964 True Lust Etat Libre d’Orange, edit by Nicoleta

Etat Libre d’Orange True Lust Rayon Violet De Ses Yeux (Nathalie Feisthauer and Violaine Collas “a mashup” of Putain de Palais and Dangerous Complicity produced by Etienne de Swardt)) 2015: The OG Morticia, a bit retro but with a delicious mixture of offbeat intelligent humor and a pale aristocratic delicacy that hides steel-strong sharp claws, Carolyn Jones’s performance created a legend and brought the character of Morticia into popular culture. True Lust, Rayon Violet De Ses Yeux is a perfect match: with a retro sensibility that pucks a punch, the fragrance starts like a well-behaved, properly powdered, pearl-wearing floral that hides a tasseled leather whip behind her smile.

Top notes: Rhum Pure Jungle Essence™, Ginger Pure Jungle Essence™, Coconut Jungle Essence™, Heart notes: Iris, Rose Absolute, Rice Powder; Base notes: Patchouli, Sandalwood, Musk

Goutal Paris Etoile dúne nuit review

Charlize Theron as Morticia in Addams Family 2  and Etoile d’une nuit from Goutal Paris, edit by Nicoleta

Goutal Paris Étoile d’Une Nuit (Mathieu Nardin)2019: Taking one of the most well respected, talented, and chameleonic actresses: Charlise Theron, with her reputation of the blonde “the ice-queen” of  Hollywood and lending her voice to Morticia in the animated comedy adventure Addam’s family spinoff from 2019 seemed like quite an odd match, at the time. But great things come out of unexpected pairs that just work!  Looking at the beautiful turquoise bottle, intricately decorated with a little satin scarf with an art deco print, and displaying it on my perfume tray, I had to quote to myself (aloud) one of my favorite Morticia quotes: ”All that I can forgiveBut Debbie…..pastels!!!!” Étoile d’Une Nuit has been my “pastel goth” scent ever since autumn started (and I have been draining my little bottle with record speed, spraying it with abandon almost every night, before sleep), as it’s the kind of comforting, plush, feminine perfume that hovers, caressing the skin, as a reassuring soft lipstick scented cocoon.

Vintage Voleur de Roses by L'Artisan Parfumeur review

Anjelica Huston, Addams Family Movie 1991 Voleur de Roses L’Artisan Parfumeur, edit by Nicoleta for Halloween 2021

L’Artisan Parfumeur Voleur de Roses (Michel Almairac)1993: She needs no introduction, “she’s creepy and kooky, mysterious and spooky”, and I’ve been trying to emulate her cheekbones with bronzer and blush every morning, for the past 20 years  – Angelica Huston

L’Artisan Parfumeur Voleur de Roses (translated as the rose thief) has stolen every trace of sweetness and rosy pleasantry from the bud, leaving us with a stripped-down, sensual thorny rose that vibrates on some kind of feral, low-humming frequency. It’s dark, it’s self-assured, as the black silhouette of Morticia standing in dim light, drinking a glass of old wine, with a ghostly hollow around her eyes and a smile on her lips. Besides the dusty wine cellar feel and dark tannic wine aftertaste, there’s also an autumnal quality to it, smartly put into play by the plum note, that mixed in with patchouli, gives the effect of damp earth, wet, dark, sweet, and encumbered by ripe fruits fallen from trees, heavy with the sugars of decay.

 Notes:  Patchouli, Plum, Rose

 Olibere Dangerous Rose review

Catherine Zeta-Jones in Vogue 2001 and Olibere Dangerous Rose, edit by Nicoleta for Halloween 2021

Olibere Paris Dangerous Rose (Luca Maffei) 2018: So deadly sensual, she’s almost vampiresque, Catherine Zeta-Jones will embody Morticia in an upcoming Netflix spinoff series named Wednesday. What better scent than a spicy rose with irreverent spirit and modern character than Olibere’s Dangerous Rose (built on the classic rose-oud-patch combo, but with enough pizzazz to make it different). Smiling maliciously, with crimson red lipstick hiding some pointy fangs, a hint of properly pale powdered cheeks, surrounded by the warmth of spices, dressed in intricate Victorian laced embroidery paired with latex and leather, this one is a rose with brains, humor, a nod to the past classics, and a wink to the future.

Top: Bergamot, Passion Fruit, Nutmeg, Pink Pepper, Cardamom; Middle: Rose Absolute, Oud; Base: Patchouli, Benzoin, Labdanum, Oakmoss, Musk

I LOVE Halloween and O LOVE etat libre d’orange!! I LOVE how Nicoleta relacionate the different elements: putain des palaces for the vampiric Lipstick, the retro sensibility of true lust, the goth vibe of etoile d’une nuit, the sensual and dark feeling of voleur des roses and the malicious behaviour of dangerous rose. My favourite between all the morticias is the mythic Angélica Houston because she makes me remind my childhood! I would like to win putain des palaces and I am writing from Spain(Tenerife) in the EU.

  • I think i’d go for Etat Libre d’Orange Putain des Palaces. So many interesting ingredients in this one – i want to know how they all fit together in a fragrance!

My favourite Morticia would have to be Daryl Hannah! I’d like to be that sophisticated, take-no-prisoners-seductive woman who wears her perfume like a weapon 🙂

I’m in the UK and thanks for the draw.

  • Thank you Nicoleta I have to say this format of review is quite agreeable. I’d choose True Lust Rayon Violet Des Yeux if I was lucky enough to win – sounds like it draws you in before unleashing the whip :). I’m in USA

  • putain-des-palaces sounds like the perfect choice for Morticia. I, too, loved her from the very beginning. She is the perfect host for the month of October. It would be fun to think of other scents perfect for Halloween. In maryland.

  • I got sparked by the “pucks a punch” part. If chosen I’d love the True Lust Rayon Violet Des Yeux. Carolyn Jones is the Sean Connery of the Addams family franchise. US

  • I enjoyed how Nicoleta matched each fragrance with each Morticia. For me, there is always something special about the original. Carolyn Jones is my favorite. Who knows? Maybe I’m just showing my age :). If chosen to win the giveaway, my choice of fragrance is Putains des Palaces. Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of this giveaway. USA

  • Nicoleta’s pictures and interesting details about the perfumes for Halloween sparked my interest in her reviews. Were I to win this draw, I would like to win True Lust Rayon Violet Des Yeux. Charlize Theron is my favorite Morticia. I live in the USA.

  • Great post Nicoleta and so much fun
I loved your picks for Morticia especially Etat Libre d Orange putain de palaces and Carolyn Jones
She has such chemistry with John Astin in the original series

    Happy Halloween
    US

  • The OG Morticia, a bit retro but with a delicious mixture of offbeat intelligent humor and a pale aristocratic delicacy that hides steel-strong sharp claws, Carolyn Jones’s performance created a legend and brought the character of Morticia into popular culture. True Lust, Rayon Violet De Ses Yeux is a perfect match: with a retro sensibility that pucks a punch, the fragrance starts like a well-behaved, properly powdered, pearl-wearing floral that hides a tasseled leather whip behind her smile.

Top notes: Rhum Pure Jungle Essence™, Ginger Pure Jungle Essence™, Coconut Jungle Essence™, Heart notes: Iris, Rose Absolute, Rice Powder; Base notes: Patchouli, Sandalwood, Musk. If I am lucky to win I would love to win True Lust, Rayon Violet De Ses Yeux because of the notes. My favourite Morticia is Anjelica Huston Charming, Charismatic and just a bit of the devil in her just takes the cake for me. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

  • She needs no introduction, “she’s creepy and kooky, mysterious and spooky”, and I’ve been trying to emulate her cheekbones with bronzer and blush every morning, for the past 20 years – Angelica Huston My favourite Morticia without a doubt just an incredibly charming and wonderful actress. If I am lucky to win I would love to win Putains de palaces because of vampy lipstick. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • I love how dark and goth combines with lust and sensuality making the perfect portrait of feminine duality. Halloween seem to be the perfect time for this paradox.
Putain des Palace is the complete opposite of my style so i would like to try and take myself out of the box.
    Hugs from Romania

  • I love Morticia Addams and The Addams Family, especially Addams Family Values. Halloween is my favorite holiday and it’s really more of a lifestyle, to be honest. I love Nicoleta’s five fragrances for Halloween, all based on Morticia Addams and the actresses that have played her character. Anjelica Huston is my personal favorite and I like the choice of Voleur de Roses for her. I never thought of Etoile d’Une Nuit as goth, but now I can totally see the pastel goth reference as Nicoleta points out. I am very excited for the Netflix show, Wednesday. I think the fragrance choices, all being lipstick/retro/rose fragrances, work perfectly for all versions of Morticia. Thank you for this article and the giveaway! I would love to win ELDO True Lust and I’m located in the USA.

  • I love it how Nicoleta combined different iterations of Morticia with different perfumes! My favourite morticia has to be Anjelica Houston from the Addams movie, but just because I loved that movie (And still do!). I’d like to win Putain de Palaces, I loved the decant I had of it, and a full bottle would be amazing! I live in Croatia, EU.

  • rrcristiana says:

I haven’t had a chance to smell any of these, but they sound intriguing. In particular, I’d like to delve a bit into the ELDO world and would prefer Putain de Palaces. As for Morticia, it would definitely have to be Anjelica Houston! Also because she was the first Morticia I got to see in films. Thank you! And I live in the UK.

  • Grats Idea! I love Daryl Hannah’s attitude in the picture and i’d love to win Putain des Palaces. Thanks CFB! Living in France.

  • Nicoleta’s choice to review fragrances based on my favorite character, Morticia Addams, was exactly what I needed this morning. I absolutely loved her reasoning for why each fragrance was perfect for the specific actresses portrayal. I would love to win Etat Libre d’Orange True Lust Rayon Violet De Ses Yeux because not only do the notes sound amazing, but Carolyn Jones is also my favorite actress to portray Morticia thus far. I live in the US

  • The best Morticia was Angelica Huston IMO Imma 80’s baby so she’s the one I grow up seeing. Very cool theme with Halloween here, ty nicoleta this review took me back in time for a minute. If I had to pick one it’d probably be Putains de Palaces for me. USA, Happy Halloween!!!

Thanks Cafleurebon, I’ve learned so much this past year from this site… Good luck everyone!!!

  • Morticia is the best. Lily Munster’s pretty great too, but no match for Morticia. I love Nicoleta’s choices and the way she paired them with the different actresses’ portrayals of M. I’ve wanted to try both of these ELDO scents for quite a while now. My choice would be the classic Putain des Palaces. Carolyn Jones, another classic, is my favorite Morticia. I am in the US.

  • Morticia Addams is such an iconic character. I discovered her, when she was played by Anjelica Huston. So her interpretation will always be my favourite. All these fragrances are a perfect for this femme fatal, somber and absoluty enticing. From them I would pick Putain des Palaces. Thank you for the opportunity and now I need to watch again thoses movie. From UE.

  • wandering_nose says:

I love Nicoleta’s review! Familiar with two out of the five creations she presents, I would be delighted to have the opportunity to test the other three – she describes them as perfect scents modern day Morticias could wrap themselves in to perform their daily magic with the extra dose of unapologetic charm. Of the two amazing offerings from ELDO I would choose Putain des Palaces. My fave Morticia would be Daryl Hannah, I’ve always been captivated by her persona. Thank you from the Republic of Ireland, EU

  • Thank you for the reviews, Nicoleta! I am curious about Putains de Palaces. I like the name and the notes sound intriguing.

  • I enjoyed how Nicoleta described the perfumes and her favorite Morticia and interwove them nicely.
If I had to pick, I would pick True Lust Rayon Violet Des Yeux.
Charlize Theron is my favorite Morticia.
    Greetings from Maryland, US.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

This was so much fun! My favorite Morticia is definitely Angelica Huston but Putains de Palaces is probably my favorite fragrance from ELDO and now I will forever think of Kill Bill when I wear it! Were I to win, I would choose True Lust Rayon Violet Des Yeux because I had no idea that this mash up existed! Thanks for the draw. From the US.

  • jmmcmenamin says:

Admittedly I’m not a big Halloween fan – not into scary or the color orange – but when you associate scents with the holiday, it becomes more appealing! I’d love to try True Lust. I don’t have a favorite Morticia but I love Darryl Hannah. In Louisiana USA.

  • Great choices! Halloween is my favorite holiday. It’s just pure fun with little expectations. My favorite Morticia is Angelica Huston although I think Catherine Zeta Jones is also perfect for the role. I would love to win True Lust Rayon Violet De Ses Yeux. I’m in MD, USA.

  • Wow! How fun! ❤️ Halloween is the best holiday! For me, it’s hard to choose between Carolyn Jones and Daryl Hannah for fav Morticia (don’t we all have a bit of Morticia lurking somewhere?). If I were lucky enough to win, I’d love to try Putains de Palaces. Thank you Nicoleta and Etat Libre d’Orange for this wonderful opportunity! USA

  • Lovely article Nicoleta! You show a great knowledge of perfume and cinema! I don´t like Halloween, as spanish guy , it doesn´t form part of my culture but it is everywhere: I have to accept that. But I love Morticia: a culture pop icon as you say. My favorite one in the role is Angelica Huston, but the voice of Charlize Theron is perfect for the role!. I would like to win True Lust Rayon Violet Des Yeux, because I think it is the first perfume mash-up: I want to live in the best of two worlds, The animalic woods of Putain des Palaces and the floral aspects of Dangerous Complicity. I live in Spain, EU.

  • As a fan of the Addams family and Morticia and all the pop culture surrounding them, this was an exceptionally fun read. The selection was centered around the rose/iris but still quite varied, with different facets. I must get Voleur de roses under my nose soon. Among the two EldO’s, I would pick True lust – I know and love PdP and I know the two are somewhat similar, but TL is unknown to me so I would love to try it.
My favorite Morticia is definitely Carolyn Jones. So sassy, classy and an icon. But I am looking forward to Catherine’s Morticia, since I find she has the perfect looks for it and is a great actress too!
    I am in the EU.

  • Danu Seith-Fyr says:

Delicious, Nicoleta, and appeals to my Samhain side!!!! a great read and fantastic choices. True Lust for its sheer audacity, Living in SW France.

  • Great Halloween collection! No pumpkins just vamp perfume! My favourite Morticia has to be Anjelica Houston, for nostalgia reasons. With my daughter I’l have to take a look into Charlize Theron’s animated one. I’d like to win Putain des palaces.
    I’m in EU

  • I would love to win Putains des Palaces. The description sounded absolutely fantastic with the vampy lipstick. Interesting to choose so many powdery fragrances for Halloween. I guess they do lean quite gothic.
    I live in Denmark, EU.

  • I love Nicoleta´s fragance choice for all the different Morticias; Putain des Palaces and Dangerous rose are with no doubt perfect scents for her. Adding to Nicoleta´s contribution, I believe Marlou´s Poudrextase and eldo´s Eau de Protection (with it´s metallic blood-rose note) are fragances that would also fit her perfectly.

The Addams Family & The Addams Family Values (1991,1993) are one of those films I enjoy rewatching every so often, so my pick for Morticia has to be Anjelica Huston.
I would love to enter the draw for Putain des Palaces.
    I am from spain, EU

  • I really enjoyed all the fragrances descriptions. I think Putain des Palaces looks very funny and intriguing. I would like to win it if my luck is enough

  • Thanks for the interesting review!

I recently asked my partner why I started to see Adams Family references everywhere and found out a new animated movie was coming out. I have been a fan of the Adams Family movies growing up and have many fond memories of this wacky Family.

I would love for the chance to win True Lust Rayon Violet De Ses Yeux.

My favorite Morticia is Anjelica Huston. The chemistry with Raul Julia made them one of the best and most enjoyable movie couples ever!

    Greetings from the UK.

  • Happy Halloween all! I love Voleur de Roses and will spritz it on Halloween. Putaines de Palaces would be my choice, if lucky, because I like a juicy raspberry note. Carolyn Jones is my favorite Morticia. Thanks for another fabulous draw! Mich USA

  • Claumarchini says:

Great review as always Nicoleta! I love when you talk cinema and who doesn’t love Morticia? We all have a Morticia inside that would like to let out every now and then, it’s so much fun and liberating! Once for Carnival we hosted a theme party where people had to dress up as movie characters and my husband and myself dressed up as Gomez and Morticia, it was sooooo much fun! I still have the black hair wig and love to wear it every now and then! My favourite Morticia is Carolyn Jones, but I am very curious to see how Catherine Zeta-Jones is going to render her! I love ELDO, I find their perfumes very unique, and I’d love to win Putain des Palaces! Greetings from Italy

  • Antonio Tavares says:

I love the description of duality that True Lust brings based on Nicoleta’s description. The “…retro sensibility that packs a punch” mixed with the “…floral that hides a tasseled leather whip” is certainly something that is both provocative and enticing. This (as well as that scrumptious note breakdown) is why True Lust Rayon Violet De Ses Yeux would be my choice. Although Catherine Zeta-Jones and this new spinoff intrigue me the most (I’ll certainly be checking that out), nostalgia and familiarity lend me to choose Anjelica Huston’s Morticia as the Queen. She just embodies that character in my mind and the others (although lovely and talented in their own right) simply do not measure up, in my opinion. Thanks as always for the opportunity and cheers from Illinois!

  • patrick_348 says:

Based on Nicoleta’s description, Voleur de Roses (and I’d go with Anjelica Huston as the best Morticia, too) sounds the most interesting, or at least the most Halloween appropriate, what with its “effect of damp earth, wet, dark, sweet, and encumbered by ripe fruits fallen from trees, heavy with the sugars of decay.” And it only has three notes listed. I would take True Lust Rayon Violet de Ses Yeux (what a name!) if I were

  • I’ve been meaning to sample Putain de Palaces for years and would love to try it. I am very into the dark, hauntingly feminine vibe that goes with all of these scents. I am from New England.

  • macaroni023 says:

What a fun read! Thank you, Nicoleta for such an interesting article. I greatly enjoyed this unique comparison between Morticia characters and these perfumes. Every actress captures characters spirit in a different light. I think the perfume choices are great. I recently have tried Etat Libre d’Orange True Lust and I believe it’s perfect Morticia scent.
    I am from EU, Lithuania

  • I had no idea there were so many Morticias! My favorite is Angelica Houston. I’ve sampled Putain des Palace and Dangerous Complicity before (trying them on my arm together now, à la True Lust)— I’ll have to look into the other scents you discuss. All things Halloweenish captivate me. I’d love to win True Lust. (USA)

Thank you for the great review, Nicoleta.

I was a huge fan of the Addams family show from back in the day.

I would love to try any of these fragrances.

What a fascinating review Nicoleta! What sparks my interest is how she compares the styles and personalities of all the different Morticias throughout cinematic history, and how they translate into inspired fragrances! I particularly liked her description of the upcoming Catherine Zeta-Jones Morticia and her vampy, deadly sensuallity translating to a spicy dark rose.

Of the two choices for the draw, I would love to win the Putains de Palaces. I live in the US. My favorite Morticia so far is definitely Anjelica Huston!
