Ex Nihilo Explicite by Olya Bar©
Ex Nihilo Explicite took me by surprise. Judging by the notes and the first spritz to be a fluffy peony cotton candy concoction with no sharp edges and all the voluptuous sensuality you can get. The reality, however, proved to be a much different journey on the skin. The opening promises the taste of peony sorbet slowly melting on the skin. Soft and delicate, you might question why it was named Explicite. Another whiff, perhaps, and you begin to understand this beautiful scent trap. The heart is hiding a queen of narcotic seduction, white lily comes out for her debut. It masquerades its true carnal nature under a shadow of an exquisite buttery praline filled with white chocolate ganache, dessert worth selling your soul for, or at least giving up a few inches in the waistband. Surrendering to its embrace, you realize how wrong you were this whole time. It is too late to escape her beautiful grip. She will never let you go.

The contrast of delicate, sensual peonies hiding the lush lily under a chocolate ganache is a brilliant composition, a sheer olfactory pleasure that awakens the senses. An invitation to an exquisite dream, created by Jordi Fernandez, of Givaudan. What follows is a torrid night, braving the forbidden. An unapologetic battle between the fragile sensuality of peonies and the devouring passion of the lily. An astonishingly calibrated structure of gourmand creaminess balanced with the narcotic power of flowers. The soft, delicate nature of peonies is invaded with a powerful lily, which I find to be a fascinating play of contrasts.

The ending is the calm after the storm. A walk-through Central Park in the early fall. The air is crisp, and she is wrapped up in a suede trench coat. There is a faint trace of vanilla trailing behind her. She is carrying a bouquet of lush lilies, and the cognac hue pollen rubs against the delicate leather, leaving traces of bright dust. She has a half smile on her face and she is hiding a secret. Her method works every time, she is a strange creature. Half human, half beautiful beast, it lures you in with a sweet and inebriating aroma, and when it finally shows its claws, it’s too late for the prey to escape. Don’t be deceived by the soft opening of this fragrance. It promises to be sweet and comforting, but there are teeth hidden underneath that pretty pink smile, and she will sink those sharp fangs into your flesh without the slightest remorse. Dinner is served.
