L’Artisan Parfumeur 25 Obscuratio Review (Daphné Bugey) 2021 Review + Fairy Tale Woods Draw

L'Artisan Parfumeur 25 Obscuratio review

The 2016-launched, and largely underdiscussed, “Natura Fabularis” collection of L’Artisan Parfumeur has recently been revamped by the historical House and relaunched under the name “La Botanique”, with two brand new creations – 63 Crepusculum Mirabile and 25 Obscuratio – substituting two of the older ones. The perfumer behind the two new fragrances is Daphné Bugey of Firmenich (composer of the initial collection, as well), while the packaging is now illustrated by Katie Scott, who has vividly depicted the collection’s theme: nature coming alive at night. After a long smelling session at the brand’s Parisian boutique at Rue Saint-Honoré, 25 Obscuratio emerged as my favorite among all six eaux de parfum of the collection: its winsome charm and olfactive immediacy appealed to me to the point of minor addiction: I simply could not resist wearing, or layering, the fragrance for days to come.

L’Artisan Parfumeur 25 Obscuratio instantly captivates the wearer with an immensely pleasing blast of patchouli goodness: chocolatey, sweetly spiced, and hard to resist. The “olfactive pyramid” manifests somewhat reversed on my skin, with the expected base notes actually declaring a strong presence at “hello”, and the floral ones unfolding afterwards. Amidst the dense, but nonetheless inviting, woods emerge a rather unexpected note of ylang-ylang: in one of the most crepuscular representations of the flower I’ve ever smelled, the ylang-ylang is stripped off its sunny disposition and banana-like undertones, with the focus being placed on its carnal, sensual aspects. Even though it communicates a distinctly nocturnal feeling, the ylang-ylang of L’Artisan Parfumeur 25 Obscuratio is still luminous – just not by sunlight. It is instead lit by moonbeams; a gleaming, yellow vision in the middle of the night, shining its guiding light in a tenebrous forest glade. My guess is that the perfumer has used the Firmenich ylang-ylang oil, which by itself is redolent with spicy, even animalic connotations.

Although ylang-ylang is a prominent ingredient, the fragrance is not predominantly floral. It’s the woodiness that mostly defines the aromatic identity of L’Artisan Parfumeur 25 Obscuratio; that woodiness, strongly built around a multifaceted patchouli, progressively becomes more ambery and balsamic with the aid of more subdued woody notes (possibly including cedarwood), resinous and incensey touches, dulcet-toned spices (I perceive cinnamon, clove and nutmeg nuances), and the beautiful Bourbon vanilla from Madagascar: an important component of the composition, this particular vanilla contributes its own woody undertones, hints of leather and, of course, its generously gourmand, comforting aura. Overall, L’Artisan Parfumeur 25 Obscuratio isn’t a particularly evolving fragrance; however, it achieves (and sustains for many hours on skin) such a profoundly satisfying, utterly delightful scent, that its relatively linear character does not detract from my enjoyment of it.

Warm, dreamlike and atmospheric, L’Artisan Parfumeur 25 Obscuratio is an excellent choice for those seeking a substantial woody fragrance of sophisticated, maturely gourmand character. Its restrainedly delicious trail could have once more lured Hansel and Gretel into the dark forest – this time as adults, and at a safe distance from candy-embellished, sugar-covered gingerbread houses.

Official Notes: Ylang-Ylang, Vanilla, Patchouli.

Disclaimer: I’d like to thank L’Artisan Parfumeur for my bottle of 25 Obscuratio. The opinions are my own.

  • Despina! What a lovely, haunting review! ❤️ This bottle sounds so chic! I really am wanting to experience Crepusculum Mirabile, but now I’ll have to add 25 Obscuratio! I like the idea of a gourmand that is more subtle & not candy sweet. As a night owl, I adore the guiding theme of “nature coming alive at night.” Thank you for this wonderful opportunity! ❤️ USA
ps – I own & love Timbuktu, Traversee du Bosphore, & Passage d’Enfer.

Great review! This sounds lovely and simple. Sometimes that’s all you want and need. Thanks for the draw. From Indianapolis.

  • It seems that L’Artisan Parfumeur 25 Obscuratio is a spicy, chocolatey composition. Despite ylang ylang being a prominent note, it not as much floral as it is woody. My favorite from L’Artisan is Timbuktu. I am in US

  • That Hansel & Gretel picture is perfect. Despina’s review brought the fairytale to my mind as well. Sometimes it is nice when a scent doesn’t morph, but stays stable. Sometimes that is very comforting. It sounds like ARtisan Parfumeur 25 Obscuration EdP is one of those stable, comforting fragrances. I am in the US.

  • I enjoyed everything about the fragrance notes in Despina’s review. L’Artisan Parfumeur Bucoliques De Provance is my favorite. I live in Poland, EU

  • What a lovely review. Who doesn’t like fairy tales? Mostly if woods are in those… I definitely love it! 🙂 L’Artisan Parfumeur 25 Obscuratio sounds amazing. The notes are sound fabulous. I only had a chance to try one perfume from L’Artisan Parfumeur, and that was Seville a l’Aube which I loved very much. Thank you for the draw. I live in Europe.

  • I thoroughly enjoyed the article. I was hooked at Incense, Wood and Amber, with patchouli at the top all chocolaty lol. A mature gourmand fragrance sounds right up my alley. I only own Batucada, which is a nice one to me. I live in Indiana USA

  • It’s interesting to see ylang ylang starring in a composition far removed from the “tropical” realm. The short notes list piques my interest and will showcase the perfumer’s mastery. Despina did a stellar job of conveying the scent profile and the general vibe very informatively. L Artisan Parfumeur is a house I have great respect for. I own and love Traversee du Bosphore (best apple scent ever), Safran Troublant (romantic, soft oriental) and Batucada (fun and zingy). More than any other house, their perfumes transport me to a very specific place. It’s surreal. For instance, if I layer Traversee with Safran Troublant it feels like I’m in 1950s Istanbul sipping black tea while overlooking the Bosphorus watching the sunset. Disclaimer: I’ve never been to Istanbul! Yet somehow…Evocative and special perfumes. Greetings from Greece!

  • L’Artisan Parfumeur 25 Obscuratio has only three notes listed, which is amazing as Despina’s review describes a very rich, though a somewhat linear perfume. I loved reading about how ylang ylang in L’Artisan Parfumeur 25 Obscuratio is lit up, not by sunlight but by moonlight, highlighting its crepuscular representation. Would love to try this incarnation of ylang ylang in this perfume. The pictures and photos in Despina’s review went very well with the writing. I have only tried Al Oudh by L’artisan Parfumeur and I like it a lot. Thanks for the lovely review and a generous draw. From USA.

  • Thank you for the review Despina!

First off. Look at that amazing bottle. Absolutely stunning and a visual compliment to any collection.

We’ve reach the time of the year where the sweeter, balsamic and incensey fragrances really come to shine. I love the way to described the notes and find it comforting to know this isn’t an excessively sweet gourmand or an animalic leather. I prefer my fragrance to be mature, but not offensive.
25 Obscuratio sounds like a magical fragrance I would love to wear together with my partner.

My favorite L’Artisan Parfumeur is Timbuktu. I would love to explore more offerings from this amazing brand.

    Greetings from the UK!

  • After read from Despina’s review, I’m very interested to try this fragrance. I love patchouli in fragrances, and in this fragrance it seems to be excellent and prominent. I like the spices which were mentioned, especially clove, and I’m interested to see what the patchouli is like in combination with the spices, and also with the woodiness, the vanilla, and the incense. I haven’t tried anything yet from this fragrance house, but I’ve been wanting to try some of their releases for a while now-I just haven’t had a chance to yet. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • The notes in this fragrance- ylang-ylang, vanilla and patchouli sound appealing to me. After trying Timbuktu by L’artisan parfumeur, I would love to try as many fragrances as possible by L’artisan Parfumeur.

  • Despina drew me towards this fragrance based on how it performed on her skin and how it reversed the olfactive pyramid. This intrigues me…plus I’m really vibing with the notes in this one 🙂 USA

  • Thank you for bringing this perfume to our attention, Despina. I happen to love woody gourmand fragrances so 25 Obscuratio sounds perfect. I love the Hansel and Gretzky as adults imagery. L’Artisan Parfumeur is a lovely house. I particularly enjoy Venenum. I live in Indiana, USA.

  • Oh my Ylang X2, Patchouli and vanilla are possibly the most sensual and comforting notes to me. This sounds like something I’d love to curl up with on a long cold winter night. I have a long list of fragrances from this house I want to try but haven’t yet. Thank you for the opportunity. In USA

  • L’Artisan 25 Obscuratio sounds quite intriguing. I love Despina’s comments that the patchouli is chocolatey and sweetly spiced and the ylang-ylang is luminously lit by moonbeams. Concluding it has a gourmand and comforting aura makes me really want to try this fragrance. I love vanilla, patchouli, and ylang-ylang so I am sure I would love this fragrance. I love many L’Artisan fragrances, but some of my favorites include Noir Exquis, Seville a l’Aube, Traversee du Bosphore, Mandarina Corsica, and Natura Fabularis 26 Tenebrae. I am located in the USA. Thank you for the article and the giveaway.

  • I love this house,Obscuratio seems to be another witty and alluring creation with it’s woodiness , carnal ylang-ylang,and subdued traces of gourmandish undertones. From Romania with love!

  • Dorothee Teboul says:

Oooh, this sound perfect for fall! I am delving into more woody slightly gourmand perfumes and would love to try this. My only other perfume from this brand is La Chasse Au Papillon. I live in France. Thank you for the evocative review.

  • Wow Despina! What a beautiful, lyrical review. I love the ylang ylang lit by moonbeams, both the visual and the description. I also love the Hansel and Gretel theme: deeply woody with a hint of gourmand in the air. Perfect! My favourite L’Artisan Parfumeur fragrances are Timbuktu and Passage D’Enfer. I would love to try this. I live in the UK.

  • Love Despina’s review! I think is quite interesting than the “olfactive pyramid” is reversed , at least on Despina´s skin. I have seen recently some other perfumes trying this approach. Don´t know if it was the L’Artisan Parfumeur purpose in 25 Obscuratio! The instant Despina´s addiction to this perfume, piques my interest to this charm and immediate scent. I love the luminous nocturnal feeling she appreciates and the multifaceted patchouli that permeates it and the ylang-ylang that seems to be here in all its tropical glory!. I love the original Passage D´Enfer and the new Passage D´Enfer Extreme: I recognize I am a incense lover! I live in Spain, EU.

Official Notes: Ylang-Ylang, Vanilla, Patchouli. A beautiful description by Despina I love Gourmand fragrances and I love Patchouli this sounds like a magical concoction for winter. This is a house that I am not familiar with but I am intrigued by nonetheless. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

  • Cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla oh my… Very gourmand sounding fragrance!! Right up my alley & I’m really loving the bottles in this amazing line. Also big time into intense or just long lasting fragrances on my skin. This seems like a intriguing fragrance for the fall weather, thanks for introducing us Despina such a lovely review!! USA

Thanks Cafleurebon for the excellent work & many draws!! Good luck everyone!

  • Despina made a great review as always. I like ylang-ylang and pathouly so I have high hopes for this new release. My favourite of the brand is Coeur de Vetiver Sacre which was discontinued some years ago. I reside in EU. Thanks

  • Despina, you drew me into the Black Forest, lovely and magical. I am especially interested in the nocturnal rendering of ylang-ylang. Thanks for the daw. NC USA

  • I appreciated the information on what this particular collection’s theme is. Knowing that it is an interpretation of nature coming alive at night gives me an understanding of where this perfume may go. I can see myself wearing 25 Obscuration on a cold, clear night.

I’ve never tried L’Artisan perfumes before but I am familiar with the house. Thank you for the giveaway. In the USA.

  • Professor_Bair says:

This fragrance is right up my alley! I love a beautiful woody fragrance. I found it interesting that this is a very linear experience for Despina. Though linear, it does sound fantastic. USA

  • They say a picture is worth a thousand words…Despina’s “Nocturnal Vision” captures the essence of her written review perfectly.

As for 25 Obscuratio as a fragrance…patchouli and chocolate open with a spicy woody finish…yes please. 🙂

    I’m in the USA.

  • Utterly delightful, minor addiction…..yes count me in. I love gourmand fragrances. Love the comparison to Hansel and Gretel lured back as adults. my favorites from the line are: Bois Farine, Traversee du Bosphore and Mechant Loup (to mix up those fairy tales). USA.

  • Despina’s review was wonderful. The combination of notes sound so intriguing and I may be in minority but I do not mind a linear fragrance at all. Especially when it smells just right. Why would you want to change? Haha. I live in the US and would love to be considered for this draw.

  • Only three notes, but this one has potential in being quite different, rich and spectacular!

Thanks for the draw and for the review!

  • As a lover of all things incense, woods and patchouli, 25 Obscuratio sounds fantastic! With only three notes listed, I’m intrigued by Despina’s perceived notes. I’m a fan of L’Artisan Parfumeur fragrances, one of which is Haute Voltige. Thanks for another fabulous article and generous draw! Mich USA

  • I liked Despina’s description of how 25 Obscuratio uses ylang-ylang. She provoked my curiosity and makes me want to sample this fragrance (not that I would mind winning the bottle!) I have never tried a fragrance by L’Artisan, but on reviewing their offerings, it seems like a major label. I live in the USA, in North Carolina.

  • Obscuratio sounds so delightful! The blend of soft woody notes, warm spices, ylang ylang and Bourbon vanilla seems like a winner to me. There should be nothing that doesnt work in this fragrance and L artisan parfumeur make such great fragrances always.
My favorite are Nuit de tubereuse, La chasse aux papillons et Timbuktu.
I am in the EU. Thanks!

  • Wonderful thing to read Despina !
It feels like , not just Obscuratio, but the whole “Natura Fabularis” collection is coming straight from a fairy tale story , with its level of mysticism . Chocolate, florals, nocturnal feelings here i come
I have special memories, and attachment to L’Artisan Parfumeur . Met my husband white wearing Vanille Absolument . Sadly it’s discontinued , I’m trying to find a bottle for a decent price , for months with no luck , asking prices are well over $260 now.
L’artisan fragrances in my collection are Noir Exquis , Premier Figuier Extreme and Tea for Two.I do like all 3 ,but Noir Exquis is my favorite.
Thank you Despina , L’Artisan Parfumeur , and Cafleurebon , and for the third time today, cheers with Pinot Noir

I’ve recently discovered that I really love the note of ylang ylang,
And Despinabsays about the ylang being stripped of its sunny disposition and instead being laminated by moon beams sounds so interesting and unique.

“Warm, dreamlike and atmospheric, L’Artisan Parfumeur 25 Obscuratio is an excellent choice for those seeking a substantial woody fragrance of sophisticated, maturely gourmand character.”…it sounds luke an amazing fall scent.
    I don’t have a favorite L’artisan Parfumeur parfum.I live in London, UK.

  • Thank you Despina for a wonderfully written review and L’Artisan Parfumeur for the kind draw. I now can’t stop imagining what the witch’s house smelt like with the backdrop of forest smells 🙂 L’Artisan Parfumeur 25 Obscuratio sounds like a fragrance for the ages and I like that in addition to spices and wood we also have patchouli and vanilla which is turning out to be a magic combo for me. My favorite from L’Artisan Parfumeur is Timbuktu. I’m in USA

  • As a big patchouli fan, I was drawn by her description of the patchouli note…and by her fairytale forest imagery. And what a beautiful bottle! I like many L’Artisan fragrances, but their usual packaging is just a little dull. My favorite L’Artisan is probably Dzongkha. I’m in Oklahoma, USA. Thanks, as always, for the opportunity to win a bottle!

  • Lovely review Despina! I don’t typically gravitate towards gourmands, but the subtle, spicy chocolate notes sound delightful. The patchouli and vanilla make it perfect for fall. The bottle is gorgeous. Favorite L’Artisan is Passage d’Enfer. I’m in MD, USA.

  • I love the idea of a grown up Hansel and Gretel scent to be lured by. My favorite scent from this house is figuier premiere or tea for two.

  • James Weaver says:

It looks like A lovely fragrance Woody notes and gourmand leanings I would love to get my nose on this. My favorite L’Artisan Parfumeur fragrance is Noir Exquis I also own Tea for two. Virginia USA resident.

  • Oh, this immediately got my attention because of Despina’s mention of the dark chocolaty patchouli mixed with ylang ylang. I enjoyed many from the collection from L’Artisan but sort of forgot about them as they are difficult to find in the US. This one sounds worth searching out. Thank you for the draw. My favorite L’Artisan is probably Tea for Two. US

  • Despina has never steered me wrong! This sounds like a true fairy tale, and even the new packaging evokes the take of Hansel and Gretel mentioned. It’s nice to see these houses that started me on this niche journey develop and continue their stories. Sometimes, it can be disappointing. But this sounds like a new chapter for an old friend. Thanks for the great review and the draw! In NYC and my favs from the house remain Dzing! and Séville à l’aube.

  • L’Artisan Parfumeur i know very well, but not Obscuratio , and the whole La Botanique Collection . I need to catch up.
Obscuratio is one interesting fragrance with chocolaty patchouli, sweet and inviting I’m intrigued.
L’Artisan Parfumeur is a house i really like , Premiere Figuier I’m wearing for close to 15 years now , went through 3 EDT , and 1 EDP bottles.
    At the moment I have:
    1) Vintage bottle of Amour Nocturne – my favorite.
    2) Vintage bottle of Traversee du Bosphore
    3) Noir Exquis – on my 2nd bottle.

I love the very visual description of a dense but inviting woods, it being nocturnal but luminous and almost carnal-like. Gives off a great vibe and a sense of what the perfume could be like! Truly haunting.

I don’t have any L’Artisan perfumes, and I haven’t even smelled them as far as I remember. I live in Lisbon, Portugal, EU.

  • There’s always some kind of positive, or unique sensation , or both around L’Artisan Parfumeur , proven fact
Elaborate patchouli fragrance , ambery sweetness, banana and madagascar vanilla all contributing for one truly special fragrance called 25 Obscuratio.
Timbuktu is my favorite L’Artisan fragrance.

The description of ylang-ylang in your review sounds absolutely delightful. My favorite L’Artisan Parfumeur fragrance is Nuit de Tubereuse.

I live in the US and would to be entered in this draw.

  • What I enjoyed most about this review is that it was extremely informative in comparison to the notes. As only 3 notes were listed, this review really gave them life and helps convey how such a simple fragrance can be so beautiful. I have never tried a L’Artisan Perfumer fragrance, but this one sounds absolutely gorgeous. Kind regards from IN, USA.

  • When I opened up this review and saw the photo collage of the ylang ylang in the dark woods I felt this was a fragrance after my heart, and when I slowed down and noted the review was from Despina, I knew I had to add it to my “must try” shortlist. A review from Despina is always a treat, and what’s more, I trust her opinions… in my experience the perfumes she calls out for being particularly memorable or beautiful really mesh with my preferences! And actually, my favorite L’Artisan might be Madarine Corsica, which Despina named in the “Best Autumn Perfumes” list this year, and which I am wearing today.

Anyway, a straight-ahead, bass-heavy scent that shows you exactly who it is up-front, wraps you in spiced earthy warmth, and stays true to itself sounds like the kind of stability I need in my life right now, lol. I live in the USA, thanks for the oppportunity. 🙂

  • Despina take on 25 Obscuratio instantly reminded me of making Browned-Butter Banana Cake with Dark Chocolate Ganache i do 2-3 times per week at my bakery , while sitting on a wooden couch. That’s how I think 25 Obscuratio would smell.
L’Artisan I know is old reputable niche brand. I own , and adore Noir Exquis , also because of Despina review, I sampled and bought Mure Et Musc Extreme . Smells like Red Velvet Cakes with blackberries, strawberries, and red berries . My favorite is still Noir Exquis.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

The moment I saw the notes I was totally captivated. Patchouli and vanilla mean the world ro me, amd I am mad about ylang ylang. Despina adds a layer of mystery and darkness with her review, especially when she explains the nature of the ylang ylang as nocturnal and animalic. My faves from L’Artisan Parfumeur are Skin on Skin and L’Eau d’Ambre Extreme. Thank you from Ireland, EU

I love the reference of this fragrance to a delicious trail in a dark forest – it is such an ode to the wonderfully mysterious character of ylang ylan, especially when supported by vanilla and patchouli.

Thank you for the great review! The fragrance sounds very beautiful. Ylang Ylang is one of my favorite floral notes and I would love to smell it in this darker woody composition. I think my favorite fragrance by L’Artisan Parfumeur at the moment is tinbuktu.

  • Reading about these two new L’Artisan Parfumeurs as I missed the first, it was fascinating that the amount of trials that Emmanuelle wrote that signifies the number on bottle showed that perhaps Crepusculum Mirabile was more difficult to make
I liked the Hansel and Gretel photo and compare

  • Antonio P Tavares says:

I always love how articulate and elegant the Çafleurebon contributors are! My favorite part about reading on Obscuratio was by far the note breakdown. I personally lobe the notes of Ylang Ylang and Patchouli. Not to mention, Cinnamon and Vanilla seem to sing off of my skin. I have never tried anything from L’Artisan Parfumeur but would love the opportunity to try, so thanks team! Cheers from Illinois!

I still wonder if “The La Botanique collection” is more high-end collection , or just more artistic one , or both ?!? I’ve smelled a lot of L’Artisan Parfumeur fragrances , at least 30 , but never even seen such “botanical” bottle before.
Woody , slightly sweet choco patchouli , balsamic and spicy , calming and relaxing sensation is what i’m expecting from 25 Obscuratio.
L’Artisan Parfumeur to me = Noir Exquis first – cuddling type of gourmand i really like. Even though I don’t know it , and notes are very different, 25 Obscuratio , and Noir Exquis do share the same ecstatic , and romantic vibe .
    Thank you all

  • Smooth and refined gourmand for people with acquired taste . My expectations for Obscuratio 25 are really high now , because of this review.
The fragrance draws me in because of the chocolate type of patchouli , the Madagascar vanilla , the resins , and banana undertones.
My favorite L’artisan is Dzing . Not only smells sophisticated, but it’s draws people into my scent bubble , asking what my fragrance is.
    Overly exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • 25 Obscuratio sounds awesome. Just by reading the article, and seeing the pictures
I’m now almost sensing the floral bouquet, the darkness, the patch ,vanilla all mixed with warm spicy and balsamic scented tones.
The fragrance is nocturnal, sensual and romantic all at once. Next time visiting Paris I’ll make sure to their boutique at Rue Saint-Honoreé.
L’Artisan Parfumeur I know because of Premier Figuier , staple in my life. Extreme version I prefer. My favorite is Traversee du Bosphore , one of the best gourmands I have.

Great review Despina! What I enjoyed most about Despina’s review is how she describes the fragrance as luminously lit as if by moonbeams instead of sunlight, dreamy and warm, yet with spicy and animalic touches, like a dark fairy tale. It’s such a gorgeous and evocative description, and I am really interested in trying it.

My favorite L’Artisan Parfumeur fragrance is La Chasse aux Papillons Extreme – it just smells like spring personified. I live in the US.
