Memories always start ’round midnight
Haven’t got the heart to stand those memories

What special about midnight? Outside of New Year’s Eve, the majority of us are not up are that hour (I’m in the minority). You are either a midnight person or not. But what is it about the midnight hour that grabs at our psyche? Songs, movies, books, all use Midnight in their titles to captivate us usually sexually or supernaturally. Things get real after midnight, just ask Cinderella!  Songs such as After Midnight, Midnight Rambler, Midnight Train to Georgia, ‘Round Midnight, In the Midnight Hour; Movies like Midnight Express, Midnight Cowboy, The Otherside of Midnight, Midnight in Paris, and the Books Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Four Past Midnight, Midnight Jewels, Upon a Midnight Clear, The Other Side of Midnight attest to this.

Midnight is also popular with fragrances houses when naming a fragrance.

Best masculine leather fragrances

I enquired where the inspiration for Midnight Leather came from and Danielle said from a trip she took to Florence, Italy in 2011. Florence, like Grasse once was, is known as the home of the world’s best high-quality leather craftsmanship. It was while taking a walk late one night at midnight in the town square with the smell of leather heavy in the air after the rainfall she watched the old men sitting around taking their expresso in gunflint mugs with tobacco hanging in the air that unforgettable moment inspired her. Danielle of course did not leave Florence without some leather, boots, and a jacket. Danielle stated that while it skews masculine a fair amount of buyers are women which excites her. It also happens to be her most expensive one to formulate in the collection (but priced the same). This is a classy fragrance and comparisons to Hermes Terre d’Hermes (original) and Tom Ford’s Tuscan Leather.   A nice whiff of blood orange opens it up before the gunflint and leather accord takes over. I don’t get much patchouli in the base but the tobacco and earthy vetiver note close this out nicely. For sure there is mystery and depth here with excellent projection and longevity. Potent? Yes indeed. For me, this will work well as a cooler weather fragrance (think Autumn). Day maybe, but night for sure. This is an adult fragrance that leans sophisticated. And, it’s a keeper.

Notes: blood orange, coriander, ginger, juniper, gunflint, leather accord, tobacco leaf, patchouli, coffee, vetiver

Disclaimer: Many thanks to Noteology for my bottle of Midnight Leather. The opinions are solely my own (and no one else’s!).

This sounds amazing. The notes seem so perfect and inviting for fall. Thanks for the draw. From Indianapolis.

I enjoy Terre D’Hermes, so anything that is similar should be great as well. The inspiration from the midnight walk in Italy was a wonderful story for a new fragrance. Leather is a great smell for fall, and Leather Oud is a great way to get that sweet smoky effect from leather. I live in Maryland USA.

  • Danielle painted a lovely, vivid picture of how her inspiration for Midnight Leather came about in Florence. And Hernando described the perfume well. Like leather, tobacco perfumes, in any weather, depending on the mood and occasion. Midnight Leather seems to be a lovely perfume. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • I loved Florence when I was there, it was my favorite Italian city. And I too left with some leather goods; the most beautiful salmon colored handbag. I still have it to this day. I would most enjoy smelling something that reminded me of my time there. In maryland.

  • Hernando! Wonderful review! ❤️ I LOVE Danielle Fleming, Noteology, & Olfactif!!! ❤️❤️❤️ Noteology fragrances are among my most beautiful, most useful (the ones I consistently reach for on a daily basis because they are intelligent, artistic, high quality, and can go anywhere with lots of compliments), and most consistent. Danielle Fleming is a real treasure. One can tell her business model is devoted to quality, quality, quality. ❤️ I’ve gotten rather bored with quite a few grands maisons lately because it appears their investments are in advertising, not quality products. I’ve been lucky to exchange notes with Ms. Fleming a few times and she is such a wonderful person. Everyone should visit her store & experience her work. I have full bottles I wear all the time from Noteology & Olfactif. Midnight Leather is gorgeous! The energy of night & all its possibilities is certainly seductive in this scent. Love it! I have only a sample of this one (as I’ve been waiting for the crisp fall weather to wear it). Perhaps now is the perfect time to purchase a full bottle! I can’t urge everyone enough – experience Noteology! You’ll love it!
Thank you for this opportunity! USA ❤️❤️❤️

  • I’m a fan of unisex leather fragrances and the notes sound wonderful, especially the blood orange, juniper, gunflint, tobacco leaf and coffee. Autumn is my favorite time of year, and this scent is calling my name. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! Mich USA

I love Noteology and Danielle not only makes high-quality products, her and her team’s customer service is above and beyond! I love that she’s not afraid to use traditionally masculine tones to cater to women and there’s something for everyone at the shop!

  • I love some leather in fall. Perfect review Hernando IMO &a perfect time for it with the weather starting to chill down a bit. Inspiration comes in many forms, cool story behind hers. It’s compared to a couple of my favorites but my gf isn’t into leather that much so I’d love to show her this one based on the note breakdown!! Glad I finally know about this house I definitely attend to check it out myself!!

USA, thanks Cafleurebon & Hernando for the draw an well written review!! Love all that y’all do, thanks for always giving me something new to read everyday!! Good luck everyone!!

  • The way Hernando describes the fragrance makes me imagine the scent itself. Very detailed description and very poetic. I do love leather, especially in fall because they are not cloying, sometimes though, I would wear leather fragrances during cool summer nights. I really love leather scents, one of my favorites is Gucci Pour Homme 2003 – the woods and leather combination is just irresponsible. I hope to try the Midnight Leather as it is leather combined with vetiver’s woody-ness, plus the blood orange, and I bet I will will it. Love from USA!

  • Hernando’s description of Danielle’s night in Florence was my favorite part. I love a leather scent, though I only buy actual leather secondhand. Leather and vetiver are two of the “masculine” notes I love to wear. I am in the US.

  • I absolutely loved the notes breakup on this masterpiece , blood orange in the top notes to leather in mid and finally coffee on the drydown, which to me looky like a safe classic leathery scent which pushes towards more of a unisex scent.
I absolutely enjoy leathery notes in my fall fragrances. USA

  • I loved how Danielle derived her inspiration from a trip she made . I just love and respect it when creators put in efforts to create such gems. Leather in fall is a yes for me, as it just complements the weather and especially with this scent its not very leather heavy either which makes it easy to be worne by both genders. Thanks . MA , USA

  • I really enjoyed reading about Danielle’s real world inspiration for Midnight Leather. I could just about smell the scene that was set in Hernando’s review.

This genre of fragrance (fruits, tobacco, and leather) are ideal for the coming cold weather season.

    I’m in the USA.

  • I was in Italy about five years ago and visited Florence one day. I wish I had more time to explore the city. It’s gorgeous and I d0 remember that scent of leather in the air. The comparison with Terre D’Hermes is exciting as I love that fragrance. I grew up in PA so it’s exciting to see her setting up shop in Scranton. I’m in MD, USA.

I really enjoyed the whole review, as it was well-rounded. But I really appreciated his inclusion of the inspiration behind the fragrance was, as it was very transportive: “I enquired where the inspiration for Midnight Leather came from and Danielle said from a trip she took to Florence, Italy in 2011. Florence, like Grasse once was, is known as the home of the world’s best high-quality leather craftsmanship. It was while taking a walk late one night at midnight in the town square with the smell of leather heavy in the air after the rainfall she watched the old men sitting around taking their expresso in gunflint mugs with tobacco hanging in the air that unforgettable moment inspired her.”

And, yes, I do like a little leather in the Fall, with one of my favorite Fall fragrances being “Bentley For Men Intense”.

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

  • I love Noteology!! I finally got a chance to visit their Scranton shop this summer because I wanted to buy something really special for my friend’s birthday. Was a wonderful experience I had! They have so much more than just fragrances and I bought a variety of different items. I can’t remember if I smelled Midnight Leather when I was there. Probably not, because my friend isn’t a “leather” fragrance wearer. But I sure am! I love the description of the notes. It sounds right up my alley and I’d be thrilled to own it.
I live in Pennsylvania (less than an hour from Scranton!)

  • I have been enjoying certain leather-prominent fragrances lately, e.g. Gucci Guilty Absolute Pour Homme. I appreciate hearing about this leather-prominent fragrance, and I hope to eventually get to try a fragrance which was made by perfumer Danielle Fleming. I think that it’s interesting that this is the most expensive fragrance for Danielle to make from her releases. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • While reading Hernando’s review, I couldn’t help but sing, in part, each song he listed in this article. I could also imagine the scene and scents of leather presented when depicting Danielle’s visit to Florence in 2011. I do enjoy a little leather in the Fall. I believe Midnight Leather will be a valuable addition to my Fall collection. I am really intrigued by the notes and wowed by the presentation of this brand. USA

Wonderful review Hernando! What I enjoyed most about Hernando’s review is learning about the inspiration being a trip to Florence and the smell of leather in the air as well as the history of exquisite leather craftsmanship. I can almost feel being n the same place on the trip I took in 2019 and I am really excited to try a fragrance that transports me back there.

I love a little leather in the fall, both in my wardrobe and my fragrances. My favorite leather fragrance at the moment is Francesca Bianchi’s The Black Knight. I live in the US.

Nice one, Hernando. I love fall scents and leather, and I am very interested in trying Noteology’s other scents in the discovery box. I live in the US.
