Meet me in St. Louis, Louis
Meet me at the fair
Don’t tell me the lights are shining
Any place but there —
“Meet Me in St. Louis,” by F.A. Mills/Andrew Sterling

It is April 1904 in St. Louis, Missouri during the most marvelous event of the new century. Across electrical wires, disembodied music and voices travel like spirits from the Palace of Electricity to a telephone receiver in the grand courtyard. Wide-eyed audiences consume exotic edibles, such as an odd, mouth puckering citrus entertainingly named “kumquat” and clouds of spun sugar on sticks, washed down with a curious beverage called “Dr. Pepper.” Under a night sky newly illuminated by thousands of lights glittering like strands of topazes is the Pike; a mile of vendors and amusement park rides, great halls and palaces house inventions such as x-ray machines and infant incubators, Philippine, Swiss and Chinese villages, caged exotic birds and lagoons dotted with gondolas. Across it all drift the aromas of familiar and strange – roast coffees mingling with the cuisines of a dozen nationalities. Within the space of a few hours, a passerby at the St. Louis World’s Fair – the largest ever dreamt up – might have felt they had traversed the very globe. And included in the throng are the grandparents of Missouri native and Chatillon Lux founder, Shawn Maher.

Maher celebrates the great Fair – the largest and most expensive ever dreamt up – with a new fragrance, Chatillon Lux 1904, that parades vibrant, contrasting notes like an array of fairground attractions, setting burnished, pungent coffee and creamy woods against zingy fruit notes, all wrapped up in a flowery jasmine bow.  Although he originally set out to make a coffee-centric fragrance, Maher soon changed course: “Coffee may have been the original inspiration, but in working with it, I realized that I found it worked so much better in tandem with other notes than as the star of the show. With that in mind, I created something that was vibrant, with contrasts in scents and textures to bring out the best in each with this diverse array.” Starting with a full-bodied coffee bean essential oil, he tamped down its innate bitterness with some carefully chosen aroma chemicals that brought a nutty, fruity quality to the composition … “This composition may not be as intricate as others,” Maher says, “but the materials were carefully selected to work both in tandem and in contrast. I wanted to reflect that feeling of discovery and realization that the world is bigger and more amazing than you ever could have imagined.”

The opening is a photo-realistic coffee note uncannily like a handful of French roast with its characteristic smoky tinge and hints of charred wood and petrol. For just a second or two, jasmine flutters in, reminding me of Ayala Moriel’s beautiful floral coffee fragrance, Finjan. But it is fleeting, giving way to cardamom, which adds its dusty, sweet spice and eases the coffee’s bitterness. A red fruit note drips in next, and the combination soon begins to smell like a breakfast café table of espresso sitting next to toast and strawberry jam. Strawberry is nearly always an old-fashioned odor to me, conjuring memories of childhood stories about poky little puppies and shortcakes and baskets of sweet fruit set out on tea tables. Its presence sends the coffee note on a detour from urban brulerie backward in time. One of my favourite aspects of 1904 is the way the coffee accord is bridged by jasmine to an old-fashioned lime cordial note in the mid-section. The flowery jasmine is so pure and gentle that it needs a warm breeze and white lace curtains to flutter through, and the lime note, while subtle, lifts the fragrance. There’s a subtle interplay between sharp and sweet, pungent and soft. 1904 rests here awhile.

Maher used a generous amount of cashmeran, and its smooth, woolly aroma joins harmoniously with the cardamom and sandalwood to temper the acerbic bite of the coffee. The combination smoothes out the fragrance so that its creamy elements become more pronounced in the dry-down. The brightness of the fruit and the coffee bean remains, but muted, just keeping everything percolating. As I breathe in the Chatillon Lux 1904 again, I feel a bit like I am weaving between two time periods and places; a modish urban roastery and a worn, white summer porch in a middle American town long before I was born. And I imagine what it must have been like to taste iced tea for the very first time, watching the lights glinting in Paris just there, past the Japanese teahouse and Venetian lagoon, listening to the gondoliers singing love songs in a language I’d never heard before.

Notes: Cardamom, coffee, sandalwood, jasmine, lime, cashmeran, musk.

  • Reading Lauryn’s review made me really hungry for some reason. 😉
I really enjoy coffee based fragrances plus 1904 adds a strawberry/red fruit note which sounds very interesting.

    I’m in US.

  • I must try Chatillon Lux 1904! Coffee and cardamom are two notes I am craving this autumn. Plus, I love the picture painted of the St. Louis World’ Fair. I will definitely be sampling this. ~ Fort Wayne, IN, USA

  • The inspiration of this fragrance is beautifully illustrated by Lauryn in this review. I can picture myself walking through the fair and taking in the scene and fragrances.
I also like knowing that Shawn let the fragrances take him in a beautiful direction, rather than he, trying to force the notes in a less desirable direction.
Other fragrances from this house that seem appealing to me would be Sunrise on LaSalle (the Jasmine tea note in this one sounds wonderful) and Yuzu/Rose/Patchouli. USA

  • I very much enjoyed Lauryn’s descriptions of the fair and the incorporation of the sights, sounds, and tastes, seem to produce a deliciously innovative new scent. Thank you for the review!

  • Sorohan Adriana says:

I want to try Chatillon Lux because I love parfume with floral and coffe notes. I am from Eu Bucharest Romania Europe

  • Gabriel Garcia says:

Outstanding review by Lauryn, Coffee and cardamom is so delicious, this formula is simple but yet, maher carefully made it simple with a flair, Ive never tried chatillon lux.

  • This review is great and 1904 feels great for fall weather. The notes makes it look kinda weird but the way the review describes it then it makes it look logical.
I love coffee notes but it is really difficult to put it in a fragrance successfully.
I live in the US and I’d love to win this one.
    Thanks

  • Oakley Bonney says:

The way Shawn spoke about the coffee working in tandem with all the other notes has me super excited to try this out!

  • Such a mix of coffe , flowery jasmine, cashmeran can make Chatillon Lux a fragrance for the soul, strawbrerry added leans gourmandish , very peacefull .Thanks for the draw, from Romania with love!

  • It’s time for fall with this fragrance! Coffee and jammy fruit are a great combination. Chatillon Lux’s Shawn Maher had a great inspiration story for this scent. Thanks for the draw. In Louisiana, USA.

  • Coffee and cardamom, jasmine and lime, sharp and sweet, pungent and soft; I am already intrigued with 1904. I haven’t smelled anything from Chatillon Lux, so I hope that this perfume will be my first. Thank you for this draw, greetings from Athens, Greece.

  • I love how scent can transport through time and space and this review really makes me want to experience 1904. What a fantastic description of the inspiration for this perfume. Also enjoyed hearing how Shawn made a coffee fragrance more complex.
    In US

  • I like the great Fair in 1904 as an inspiration for this perfume. I also like the smell of coffee so this scent sounds great. This line is really hard to find and I have not yet tried anything from the brand. I hope I will have this opportunity soon. I’m in EU.

  • Chatillon Lux is very well known in the shaving community for their great products. Coffee and cardamom sounds like a great combination for fall. USA

  • I am fascinated by the World’s Fairs, and have always wanted to go to visit the “Wig Sphere” in St. Louis (Simpsons reference). The creamy, woody, jasmine, lime coffee sounds like an amazingly uplifting scent. I have not tried either line, much to my chagrin. And I am in the US.

  • 1904 sounds like another amazing fragrance from Shawn. I consider Chatillon Lux to be my gateway into fragrance and it’s been a delightful ride. In particular a fan of Sun Soaked and Biblio.

  • I’m very curious as to what Shawn has done with coffee, jasmine, and cardamom with 1904. Also I like the theme, the exotic melting pot of the World Fair. I am a huge fan of his Weinstrasse, La Petite Prairie, and Sunrise on Lasalle frags. I may pick up the aftershave and soap from Declaration Grooming too!

  • Wow, those notes seem like they’d be quite lovely together. Thanks for the draw! From Indianapolis.

  • I haven’t tried any Chantillon Lux or Maher perfume! I would love to try Chantillon Lux 1904 since I love coffee!

  • Attending a world’s fair sounds fabulous. I liked the thought of discovering new inventions and tasting new food. Coffee fragrances are perfect for fall. I do enjoy Tempo Rubato from Maher Olfactive. Thanks for another great draw! Mich USA

  • What a great inspiration for a fragrance. I wonder if we could ever all be so inspired with the wonder and potential in the world as people must have felt there. I’m going to pop over and order the sample set. I’ve been meaning to try this house for a while now. The drydown of this sounds like it’s right up my alley.

  • Lauryn! Fantastic review! ❤️ Chantillon Luxe is wonderful! Maher Olfactif is fantastic! Shawn Maher is amazing! I ordered sample sets from Chantillon Luxe & Maher Olfactif & we have been thoroughly enjoying them! The postal service made a mistake with our order. We contacted Mr. Maher & he was SO kind & fabulous! ❤️ He was not at all obligated to fix their mistake, but he got in touch with us personally within hours & resent everything the same day! The sample sizes are generous & high quality!
So far, we like them all, but have been especially drawn to Unconditional Surrender (will be great for crisp fall days with tobacco, leather, earthy/slightly barnyard oud). I’ve been wearing this on the weekends when we go riding (it’s perfect). To me, it really calls out as an equestrian scent. I was delighted to find that the inspiration for Unconditional Surrender is Ulysses S. Grant, whose early life was occupied with horses. By 5, he could ride standing up on the back of a trotting horse and by 9 he was being hired by local farmers to “break” & train their unruly colts. We also love Weinstrasse, which does remind us of a rich biodynamic field-blend of a wine like Coulee de Serrant. Lovely!
I would Love a bottle of 1904! What a great opportunity!! ❤️ I love the description and the notes of coffee, lime, strawberry, jasmine, & cardamom. Mr. Maher is excellent at blending rich tapestries of scent! ❤️ USA

  • I am not familiar with Châtillon Lux or Maher Olfactive but I have read many amazing articles on Cafleurebon and definitely need to make up for my “ignorance”! I enjoy a lot coffee in fragrances (maybe because I am a coffee lover) and 1904 sounds extremely intriguing, especially the combination of coffee with cardamom, with lime and with jasmine, wow! Greetings from Italy

  • I really love the notes on this one! I love the notes yet it gives me mystery with coffee and cardamom combination. I bet this is a relaxing, calm, and inviting scent. Hoping to try this one soon.
I love such houses creating perfumes with great stories that will take you to a moment or place.
Have a fragrant day to all. USA, South Carolina

  • What doesn’t strike me? This composition and its muse are nostalgic and lovely. I want to be there. I want to go back to a simpler time when Dr. Pepper was new and, at least in my imagination, life was sweeter and slower, and just what I need right now. All bottled up, and ready for me to venture there. In maryland.

I love it when events like the 1904 World’s Fair become inspiration for perfumes. Lauryn has described the fair so brilliantly that I felt like I was part of the curious and amazed crowd gathered in St. Louis, enjoying the exotic sights, sounds, tastes and most of all – smells. Very happy that Shawn Maher’s grandparents were there which I’d imagine made the event feel more personal for him. I also love the fact that he changed his direction of thought while working on the fragrance and decided to marry the coffee with other notes rather than make it a coffee based fragrance. The notes working in tandem and in contrast is an amazing idea which, although challenging, is guaranteed to produce impressive results. I have not tried any of the Chatillon Lux or Maher Olfactive fragrances as of yet so would not have a favorite. 1904 sounds like a possible great start though :). Many thanks from the Republic of Ireland, EU

  • As a big fan of Shawn’s fragrances, I’m interested in the combination of coffee, cardamom and sandalwood. This sounds like a perfect fall scent.

  • As a big fan of Shawn’s fragrances, I’m interested in the combination of coffee, cardamom and sandalwood. This sounds like a perfect fall scent. I’m in the USA.

  • I loved Lauryn’s description of the 1904 World’s Fair and all the inventions on display. It must have been wonderful to experience that in person. But more importantly, I want to experience Mr. Maher’s take on a coffee scent because I know it won’t be a typical coffee house scent. I love Shawn’s work with Benton Park, Confluence and Orris Forest being some of my favorites. I will definitely need to smell this one. Thank you for the draw. US

  • Thanks for the great review Lauryn.
I’m struck at what a good lens this fragrance is to view an event and all it’s craziness from an era from another year. I can only imagine walking through the 1904 fair, with it’s curious delights, strange noises and the unfiltered stream on entertainment.

Coffee is a hard not to work with and te combination of these notes is divine..

I’m a huge fan of Chatillon Lux Biblio.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Shawns descriptions and inspirations are just as interesting as the scents of themselves. The combination of coffee and cardamom lend themselves well to a Fall or Winter scent, with the lime and jasmine adding a unique balance. Of the several Chatillon Lux scents I own, the stand out for me is Admiral. Bon Vivant, La Foret De Liguest and Unconditional Surrender are right up there as well.

  • Wow, I loved the picturesque depiction of 1904 Paris fair, as well as an eccentric inspiration for the perfume. Sadly, I haven’t smelled anything from the Chatillon Lux of Maher olfactive, but 1904 sounds both artistic and beautiful to wear at the same time. It would probably be my winter and fall staple if I’d win it, to be honest! I live in Croatia, EU.

  • What a wonderful review! I’m very excited to try and the notes seems fantastic.

    I live in Poland, EU.

  • I have never tried a Chatillon Lux or Maher Olfactive fragrance, but I would love to try 1904. What strikes me most are the notes and the concept. It sounds absolutely gorgeous and I really want to get my nose on this one! Kind regards from IN, USA.

  • This new fragrance from Chatillon Lux sounds excellent. I am intrigued by the combo of coffee and cardamom. I have tried many fragrances in the CL line, and I really enjoyed Nonaginta and Unconditional Surrender. Scott in SLC.

  • 1904 What an interesting time, great review I felt as if I was walking through a crowded world fair in a St Louis fairground. As for the fragrance it’s self I’m a big fan of coffee and cardamom notes, so this one is a most on my bucket list!! I’ve tried Weinstrasse EDT before, two thumbs up IMO!! Cool images from back in the days and I love the Chatillon Lux bottles!! USA, thanks Cafleurebon, Chatillon Lux & Maher Olfactive for this cool draw… Good luck everyone!!!

  • Nice associations with the world fair here, which spark the interest into the perfume even more. Never tried any perfumes from that company so far.

    Living in the EU

  • From Lauryn’s review of Chatillon Lux 1904, it seems to be an olfactory time machine. I can imagine being there in 1904 at the world fair in St. Louis and partaking of the smells and sounds and tastes of exotic worlds far, far away. I have tried almost all Chatillon Lux and Maherolfactive perfumes, via reasonably priced discovery sets, and love Treachery and Tempo Rubato and Gratiot League Square. Shawn is a genius in re-creating lost worlds and trying his perfumes is a bit like reading olfactory novels. I am intrigued by 1904 and would love to try it. Thanks for the review and draw. I’m in the USA.

  • This coffee centric frag with cardamom, spices and strawberry sounds really delicious and unique. Jasmine is also one of my favorite notes and not so usual in gourmands, so it would be interesting to smell it in such a combination.
I have never tried Chatillon Lux or Maher Olfactive before.
    I am in the EU.
    Thanks!

  • Coffee and Sandalwood is a fantastic combo. I really need to check out Chatillon Lux. I am a wet shaver so I am very familiar with the brand, but have not tried any out yet. I enjoyed the feel of this review that takes me back to a nostalgic, simpler era (or was it?). Rose tinted glasses are a helluva drug 🙂
    Thank you from Canada.

  • I love Lauryn’s review of this fragrance and the mention of coffee, sandalwood and musk sounds very lovely. I have not tried any Chatillon Lux or Maher Olfactive yet but I love the description of this fragrance. Greetings from Maryland, US

  • I have never tried anything from this brand, but Chatillon Lux 1904 sound amazing from the base of the noted. I very like coffee and jasmine notes so they could be fabulous together. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • Coffee, spice and musk with jasmine sounds like a lovely fragrance for cooler weather. Shawn Maher always has such wonderful inspirations for his fragrances. I’m just glad there’s no cotton candy accord in his carnival scent! I do not have a favorite Chatillon Lux fragrance. I’m in MD, USA.

  • I’m really intrigued by the coffee note in 1904. I love the smell of freshly roasted coffee, but not overly decadent coffee fragrances. I’m curious if this one reads as dry and aromatic or rich and sweet.

Nefertiti is my favorite of Shawn’s compositions and a regular wear.

  • 1904 sounds exceptional, this brand tempting me yet again, Cardamom, coffee, Jasmine and lime? Yes please!
I’ve been searching for coffee fragrances and this would be an exciting addition to my collection- Lauren gives a great review and thanks for the the draw!
    I’m in Canada.

  • Vanillander65 says:

I loooove coffee in perfumes and I’m always searching for the perfect one. I’m really curious about Shawn Maher’s interpretation of the note, it sounds amazing and promising.
I have not tried any of the Chatillon Lux or Maher Olfactive lines, but I would like to.
I’m from the EU. Thank you for the draw!

  • I drink my coffee with cardamom. The cardamom makes the coffee so much better and I would like to wear it as a scent.
I haven’t try anything in the Chatillon Lux or Maher Olfactive lines.
    I live in EU, Romania.

  • I really want to try this smooth & velvety fragrance, because of the combination of jasmine and coffee, two of my favorite notes.

In addition to the stormy and vibrant start with coffee chords, I want to see how “the flowery jasmine becomes so pure and gentle that it needs a warm breeze and white lace curtains to flutter through”.

Treachery is my favorite from Maher Olfactive line.

Thanks for the chance, I live in Europe

  • I loved how thoughtfully balanced this coffee based fragrance is, as described by Shawn. His inspirations are unique and I am looking forward to sampling some of his creations. I have not tried any fragrances from Chatillon Lux or Maher Olfactive but I do want to support artisan perfumers. They are the future of fragrance in my opinion. Thank you for the giveaway. In the USA,

  • Barry R Fritchman Jr says:

I’m always intrigued by Shawn Maher’s narratives and how he ties his region and local history into his scent creations…and 1904 is no exception. I *do* love a coffee note in fragrance but am glad to know this isn’t simply a one-dimensional coffee frag. I’ve tried several Chatillon Lux scents in the past and enjoyed Gratiot League Square and Lamplight Penance. I’m in Pennsylvania, USA.

  • I’m constantly searching for a really good coffee fragrance…so this intrigues (it’s world’s fair tie in helps, too…I was fascinated by old world’s fairs when I was in grad school). Every time you feature a Chatillon Lux fragrance, I think “I’ve got to try this line.” So many of them sound good! But I’ve yet to try them (or the Mahon Olfactive frags). I live down I-44 aways from St. Louis in Oklahoma, USA. Thanks, as always, for the draw!

  • redwheelbarrow says:

Wow this one sounds really interesting. I love coffee and cardamom and I’m trying to imagine how lime and jasmine play into that. I do agree with you that the scent of strawberry does send me back in time. I’m still dying to try this house, the offerings all sound so different. Thank you for the draw, from the US.

  • I like that this is such a unique combination of notes, to conjure up such a specific story and moment, and the experience of trying new flavors for the first time. I don’t believe I’ve tried any of Shawn’s creations before. (USA)

  • I’ve been wanting to try Weinstrasse very much and others from Shawn Maher, but I haven’t gotten a chance yet to try any of them. I can enjoy coffee used in perfumery, and I want to see how it is used in tandem with the other ingredients which are in this fragrance. I’m very interested to try it. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • sephrenia300 says:

Great review Lauryn! What strikes me about Chatillon Lux 1904 is the fascinating insight into how the perfumer changed directions over the course of its creation – initially intending to make a coffee fragrance, he was instead later inspired to weave it in with many other notes to create a more diverse and balanced fragrance. I love that he felt inspired by the spirit of discovery and bewilderment at new inventions and peculiarities of the World’s Fair to change his central idea to one of contrast, diversity, and vibrancy. Who among us hasn’t worked on a project that ended up taking a completely different direction? I admire Mr. Maher’s flexibility and resilience!

As I wine lover, my favorite Chatillon Lux fragrance has to be Weinstrasse. I live in the US.
