Chatillon Lux Yuzu/ Rose/ Patchouli, Confluence, and Weinstrasse, (Shawn Maher) + The 3 you Should be Wearing Draw

Chatillon Lux perfumes are composed by Shawn Maher

A true American original, Chatillon Lux takes its inspiration from founder and perfumer Shawn Maher who makes his home of St. Louis, Missouri. But more than that, Maher’s fragrances feel like a trip to a specific, beloved place. There’s a scene in the Movie Scrooge when Albert Finney, as the title character, abruptly finds himself in the middle of a winter scene from his childhood. Though he hasn’t thought of them for more than half a century, Scrooge Immediately recalls the name of each of his schoolmates as he watches them pulled by horse-drawn sleigh. Chatillon Lux fragrances often have a similarly sudden transporting effect – with a dab or two, they can magick you to other times and places with such specificity that Maher’s memories may begin to feel like your own.

As a starting point for those unfamiliar with Chatillon Lux, here are three exemplars of the line that should find a way into your collection.

Chatillon Lux Confluence EDT by Shawn Maher

Chatillon Lux Confluence (2020): Shawn Maher is brilliant at translating outdoor environs into fragrance with careful detail. Chatillon Lux Confluence is one of his best examples of this. A fragrant embodiment of the woodsy meeting point of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, Confluence’s citrus, ginger and juniper opening is cool and springy, summoning in an instant one of those chilly late winter days where the sky is endlessly blue, twigs crunch with each step, the woods call out in sharp aromas of spruce needle, eucalyptus, fir and juniper, and the smell of snow thaw over streams pulsing with icy water bounces like ions through the bristling air. Evocative, stirring, and breathlessly beautiful, close your eyes and breathe in and you could be standing on a bluff above the churn of water in early March. There are hints of the spring to come in Confluence’s later stages. The top citrus notes fan out and sharp, ginger cuts in again, this time joined by woods, and the composition begins to warm. Palo santo oil, slightly milky and comforting, weaves through the top notes, and the wood notes intensify with an intensely life-like, smoky, rich cedar accentuated with frankincense. Benzoin gives the dry-down a snuggly, blanketed feel, the scent equivalent of curling up in a warm, downy bed after a day in winter woods. One of my favourites of the Chatillon Lux line.

Notes: Frankincense, palo santo, benzoin, elemi, cedar, black spruce, atlas cedar, juniper and fir balsam.

Yuzu Rose Patchouli by Chatillon Lux

Chatillon Lux Yuzu Rose Patchouli, image courtesy of Chatillon Lux

Chantillon Lux Yuzu/ Rose/ Patchouli (2018): From its first rosy-zingy blast right through to its loamy, woody dry-down, Yuzu/ Rose/ Patchouli is a treat and a study in how certain scents can contrast and complement each other simultaneously. An homage to the gardens of Henry Shaw (now part of the St. Louis botanical gardens), Yuzu/ Rose/ Patchouli leads with Yuzu, that most floral yet acidic of citruses. The tangy bitterness of the yuzu turns out to be a natural complement to the waxy sweetness of pink rose. To round out his dominant citric note, Maher combined bitter and sweet yuzu accords and then amplified them with neroli. The result is a perfectly balanced, lively fruit that is equal parts bitter-flowery-herbal. The silky rose accord at the perfume’s heart is bolstered by geranium, which provides a dark herbal contrast to its full bloom sweetness. And, as the fragrance develops, this dynamic duo proves itself a perfect foil for the earthy, woodsy gradations of several patchoulis. Tangy, rosy, earthy Yuzu/ Rose/ Patchouli is a tonic when you are craving something that can stand up to heat or sparkle like a reflected sunbeam in mid-winter.

Notes: Yuzu, neroli, rose, patchouli, geranium.

Chatillon Lux Weinstrasse best perfumes of 2019

Chatillon Lux Weinstrasse, image courtesy of Chatillon Lux

Chatilllon Lux Weinstrasse (2019): The utterly original, heart quickening Weinstrasse is one of those rare perfumes that is both quirky oddball and startlingly beautiful. Despite its description as a fougere on Chatillon Lux’s website, Weinstrasse fits no perfume category I can come up with. A brilliant, perfectly pitched white burgundy grape opens the fragrance as honey, rich, dark florals and woodsy moss tumble over each other in strange, wonderful profusion. Then grape note is bittersweet, dripping with punchy juice and the unmistakable flowery edge of white grape right on the vine. Thick maple immortelle and herbal lavender swirl through Weinstrasse’s middle like a stream of syrup, adding a hedonistic vibe and balancing out acidity of the white wine note. Acerbic oakmoss then pierces all those bacchanalian aromas with sharp, woodsy greenness and the anarchy starts up again. These disparate notes accentuate each other like musical counterpoints, and create a canvas of bitter, luscious, and dry fruity facets so lifelike and unique that Weinstrasse becomes instantly addictive. I don’t know when to tell you to wear or for what occasions. Just wear it. If you try only one fragrance from Chatillon Lux, make it this one.

Notes: white grape, honeysuckle, iris, blackcurrant bud, lavender, helichrysum, sandalwood, coumarin, oak moss, musk.

  • Thank you Lauryn for a comprehensive review. I almost feel as if I’m able to inhale the fragrances depicted by your in-depth description of each note. All fragrances offer notes that draw me to each one specifically. However, it is Weinstrasse that has captured my spirit. Lauryn, you depict this fragrance as a quirky oddball, startlingly beautiful. I love this depiction. It’s kind of how I view each new day 🙂
Naturally, should I win, my choice is Weinstrasse. USA

  • The beautiful oddball description has me really interested in Weinstrasse, so if I win that’s the one I’d want to win. I love that he is in St. Louis and Confluence is such a cool idea for a perfume. The Yuzu Rose Patchouli sounds lovely too. I am in the US and, sadly, have not tried any Chatillon Lux Perfumes.

  • A beautiful house of fragrance, what i loved about three of them is , 1.for rose patchouli i loved its yuzu notes which blend beautifully with green rose
2.for Confluence i loved the resinous woody notes in it, perfect for fall
3.for Weinstrasse i think i loved it musty earthiness.
I have never tried frags from this house but would love to.
If i were to win , i would love to win Chatillon Lux Weinstrasse 🙂 USA.

  • Lauryn, I adore the intellectual clarity you achieve along with the poetry of your reviews! ❤️ I remember a review of Shawn Maher scents, but focusing on Maher Olfactif. Chantillon Lux is fascinating with its lack of timetables, freedom of artistic expression & sense of place. I love to wear fragrances that smell of winter in this part of the year (conversely, there is something magical about bright citrus & the smell of new-fallen snow). Conflience’s “chilly late winter day” sounds lovely. I’ve visited Shaw’s gardens & would be delighted to experience Yuzu Rose Patchouli, but it’s Weinstrasse that I really must find! I imagine some kind of quirky & rustic biodynamic field blend of a wine bouquet in my mind! Thank you for this wonderful opportunity! I look forward to learning more about Mr. Maher’s work! ❤️ USA

  • I’ve never tried any Chatillon lux perfumes, which feels like a shame since I’ve visited family that also lives in St. Louis. I would choose confluence because of my love of burning resin incense like frankincense and benzoin. Also carrying a stick of smoking Palo Santo through my home. Palo Santo in perfume is such a delight, and I hope to see it become more popular in the future. I think it belongs right next to Elemi in the “makes you feel happy and refreshed when inhaled” category of notes. (I live in the USA)

  • Mazikeen Smith 24 says:

Great job Lauryn! These reviews sharpens my imagination with its clarity and details. Fragrances was described artistically and I hope the actual scent does too. I havent tried any from Chantillon Lux and due to this imagination touching reviews, plus the notes and story these fragrances wants to tell, I certainly would love to try one. I would personally choose Weintrasse because I love Iris, lavender, and sandalwood.
Cheers to Chantillon Lux and Shawn Maher <3

  • Lauryn, thanks for so clearing drawing us into Shawn’s focus on the sense of place; that is what draws me into all three. His originality intrigues me. I haven’t tried Chatillon and would love to try Confluence. NC USA

  • Wonderful review. The Yuzu Rose Patchouli frag sounds amazing. I love the Rose-Patch combination of Portrait of a Lady, and a dash of Yuzu on top of that sounds like it would be sumptuous! Confluence also sounds good. I love woody scents and Lauryn’s writing makes me want to go outside right this instant. However, my choice if I win would definitely be Weinstrasse! It sounds like Mousse Illuminee, which is one of my all-time favorite fragrances and which always had a grape-ish note to me that nobody else seems to get. I’m pleased that Lauryn confidently states that this is THE fragrance to try from Chatillon Lux, as it would have been my choice either way! Cheers from NC, USA.

  • These sound lovely. I’m particularly interested in Confluence. It seems earthy, green and rich. Yes, please! Thanks from the draw! From Indianapolis, Indiana.

  • I haven’t heard of this brand yet. I love Indie Houses and the unique creations they come up with.

I loved the description of Confluence. It conjures up a chilly feeling of late Fall and makes me want to put on a sweater.

Yuzu/Rose/Patchouli interests me because of it being described as a balanced bitter/sweet combo.

Weinstrasse calls to me because, well, white grape. I’ve smelled nothing like that before and that’s the fun part of a fragrance journey. Smelling things you’ve never smelled before.

My giveaway choice is Weinstrasse. Thanks for sharing this house with us. In the USA.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

Wow these all sound so good. I need to get some samples from this house. If I were the lucky winner I would choose Weinstrasse because you had me at anarchy. These notes all sound so interesting and I would love to see how they play together. Syrup and wine and woods sounds amazing! Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • Spencer Armstrong says:

YRP is my very favorite scent. The way the notes are all individually present and yet play together to exceed their (wonderful) parts is stunning.

  • With an eye toward something to wear this winter, Lauryn’s review of Chatillon Lux Confluence evokes the notion of a crisp January day outdoors. While her comment that if you can only try one it should be Wienstrasse caused me to take pause as I’ve tried none of them, I will go with my initial reaction and select Confluence, if this draw affords me the chance to try my first.

    I am in the US.

  • What appeals to me about these fragrances is that they all seem like a piece of artwork. I love that Lauryn couldn’t describe necessarily what each fragrance smelled like or when to wear each one, but that makes each one that much more precious. I am a big fan of fragrances that are more to paint a scene, rather than to smell appealing (not saying that I think it to smell bad, however, public appeal doesn’t seem to be the aim for these fragrances). If I were to win, I would love to try Confluence.
    Best regards from IN, USA!

  • I have had the pleasure and honor, yes, honor, these perfumes by Shawn are so good, of sampling his Chatillon Lux line as well as the Maher Olfactive Collection. They are strong, deep, and change over time beautifully, much as a deep work of art changes in your perceptions over time, as you learn and grow and evolve over time. Though not mentioned by Lauryn in her reviews here, my favorites are Treachery, Tempo Rubato, and Gratiot League Square. Were I be so lucky as to win this draw, I would choose Chatillon Lux Weinstrasse. Thanks for the detailed reviews of this lovely line, and to Shawn for a generous draw. From USA.

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

I think it’s a great idea to draw inspiration from St. Louis to create a fragrance line. Confluence sounds most appealing to me, since it seems like a really interesting take on the aquatic genre. I’d love to win and try Confluence. I haven’t tried anything yet from this house, but I appreciate the concept. I live in Maryland USA.

  • rachel wiener says:

Another cool house I’ve never heard of! As an oddball myself with a not dissimilar name I was going to pick Weinstrasse as it sounds like a potential signature scent. Problem is I’m so drawn to coniferous woods and incense notes so I guess I’ll go with Confluence. Thank you for the opportunity. In US.

  • All sound incredible, especially Confluence. I would love to try this outdoorsy fragrance. Thanks for the opportunity! Mich USA

  • The variety and complexity of all the notes mentioned here make these perfumes very intriguing! The first perfume reviewed, Confluence sounds very beautiful- the comparison to a walk in the woods is very appealing. This is the one I would love to win. I have not tried this house. TX, USA

  • Lauryn’s review made me want to run out and sample all three Chatillon Lux fragrances. Shawn Maher seems to have a unique fragrance aesthetic, something I admire in an age when so much smells similar. I particularly liked Layryn’s description of Weinstrasse but after giving it some thought, the notes in Confluence appeal to me most. Confluence is the bottle I would try if given the chance. ~Indiana, USA

  • The frankincense note in the Confluence is appealing. That’s the one I choose for the draw. Not tried any from this line as of yet. US

  • When the review reads, “If you try only one fragrance from Chatillon Lux, make it this one,” the choice is obvious! I’d love to try weinstrasse. I don’t think I’m familiar with any scents that contain white grape!
    In Louisiana USA.

  • Bryant Worley says:

The way Lauryn broke down each fragrance helps me to see that each fragrance is masterfully done, detailed, and well-thought-out.

Unfortunately, I’ve never trieda Chatillon Lux fragrances, but if I were to win, the one I would like to is Yuzu/ Rose/ Patchouli, as it sounds the best to me.

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

  • I would have to say Chatillon Lux Weinstrasse sounds the most appealing, although all three sound appealing too. The Palo Santo mentioned in the Confluence perfume is very interesting to me as I love PS. And a great Neroli scent is always a must. But this last one just sounds so unusual I would love to try it. In maryland.

  • DulciusExAsperis says:

Haven’t tried any Chatillon Lux. But going by the notes, Confluence sounds right up my alley, so I’d choose that one. I love woodsy fragrances, and especially palo Santo. Thanks for the reviews! I’m in the USA.

  • MarkMarkMark678 says:

Confluence sounds like a journey, the sharpness of the citrus and juniper smoothed out and calmed down by the Palo santo oil sounds like nothing I’ve tried before.

Yusu/Rose/Patchouli seems like such a contradicting fragrance that I’d be interested to smell it.
Rose and patchouli do work well together , we’ve seen that many times, but the inclusion of Yuzu sounds intriguing.

    Weinstrasse
    White grape?
    Dark florals?
    Woody moss?
I have no clue what this could smell like, but I’m convinced this would be the one to try.

If I were to win I would totally choose Weinstrasse based in n Lauryns recommendation.

Unfortunately I have never tried anything from this house.

  • I really admire what Shawn Maher has accomplished with Chatillon Lux. I’ve tried a decant of Sunrise on LaSalle and was impressed with its uniqueness and complexity. I would love to try Weinstrasse, Lauryn did such a wonderful job describing this unusual scent. The honeyed dark florals and dark moss sound perfect for autumn. I’m in MD, USA.

  • kalexander1710 says:

As a resident of St. Louis, the article really resonated with me. I would have to choose Confluence because the description is what we all wish the Mississippi River would be lol. But I love winter and the description is incredibly appealing to me. I haven’t tried any fragrances from Chantillon Lux before but I will most definitely be checking them out.

  • Out of all the fragrance I think weinstrasse intrigued me the most , especially the notes composition as explained by Lauryn ( thanks to you). Oakmoss with cassis notes I something I can only imagine , never tried. Would love to try out their other fragrances as well since I haven’t tried any. Would love to win myself WEINSTRASSE.
    USA

  • Thank you for the great review Lauryn!

I’ve had a chance to sniff all of these fragrances and your reviews are absolutely spot on.

Confluence is a healing and soothing citrus pine fragrance and this would be my pick.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • ThatMulattoDude says:

Lauryn’s write-up on these fragrances is excellent and gives a nice picture of how they behave on skin. I’m sold on the recommendation to have Weinstrasse if you could only have 1 from this brand…it sounds really intriguing. I dig the artistry and craftsmanship and effort of the perfumer to draw from his personal background in creating these gems. Appreciate the giveaway offer! Best from Virginia, USA!

  • Congratulations on the awards Shawn Maher that’s awesome…. Love the review Lauryn Beer!! I clearly see why Cafleurebon is the best at it & why they won so many awards, well deserved!!! The one that calls me is Chatillon Lux Yuzu Rose Patchouli very intrigued!!! Haven’t tired any from this house but definitely will soon. USA thanks Cafleurebon keep up the excellent work!! Good luck everyone!!!

  • All of these sound gorgeous. I’ve heard only good things about Chatillon Lux. I love the idea of a scent making me feel like I’ve been to some strange place that I really haven’t. It reminds me of things I’ve read about false memories, which is a fascinating subject. I haven’t tried anything from Chatillon Lux. If I win, I’d prefer Weinstrasse.
    (SoCal)

  • I haven’t tried anything yet from, perfumer, Shawn Maher, but his fragrance releases are on my long list of fragrances to sample. Out of these three fragrances, I had only heard of “Confluence”, so I appreciate learning more about fragrances from Shawn Maher. I’m most interested in trying “Weinstrasse” because oak moss, white grape, lavender, and iris are some of my favorite ingredients used in perfumery. If I win, then I would choose “Weinstrasse”. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • I’m a big fan of Shawn’s work, both in Chatillon Lux and Maher Perfumes. My favorite has to be Weinstrasse, but they’re all pretty great. Weinstrasse brings me back to a trip to wine country I took with friends a number of years back, and just leaves me in a relaxed mood. As was mentioned in the review, Yuzu Rose Patchouli strikes a great balance between tart and sweet. I haven’t tried Confluence yet, but based on his other work, this combination of notes sounds like a real winner in his hands, and would be my choice if I were to win. Located in California.

  • Rob P Storness-Bliss says:

I have tried his discovery set and also own Benton Park and Madame Chouteau which are both masterpieces. I would love to win Weinstrasse. The white grape note has always intrigued me and have such respect for everything that Shawn does.
Such an amazing house and love his continued work. Have not tried the Chatillon Lux line yet.

  • I’ve never heard of this perfume house until reading this overview of their fragrances. I absolutely love the description of Chantillon Lux Yuzu/ Rose/ Patchouli. Rose and patchouli are some of my favorite notes, especially when blended together. A favorite of mine that has both notes is Midnight Poison. It just is such a great combination. If I were to win, I’d definitely pick Yuzu/Rose/Patchouli.
    I live in the US.

    I live in the US.

  • As a lifelong St. Louisan, I loved to learn about Shawn and his fragrance creations. To be able to wear an interpretation of the essences of my beloved hometown would be a thrill. I look forward to smelling all of Chatillon’s fragrances, but of the three listed, Weinstrasse intrigues me the most. Missouri has a rich but often unrecognized wine legacy.

  • What appeals to me about these and all of Shawn’s work is not only the wonderful way he blends and uses notes but that all of fragrances have a story tied to either a place or time. I would love to win his newest Confluence. I have tried both of the others as well as most of his Chatillion Lux line and all of Maher Olfactive. Love his work. Thanks for the draw!

  • Very nice review Lauryn! What appeals to me about Confluence is the attention to detail in recreating a specific physical environment – specifically, the conjoining of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. I love green, woody, environmental gragrances, so the inspiration behind Confluence really entices me. What appeals to me about Yuzu/ Rose/ Patchouli is the contrast between tangy citrus and the dark loamy herbal drydown. I really enjoy fragrances that juxtapose light and dark elements, heavy and soft. And finally, what appeals to me about Weinstrasse is how it’s inspired by the German wine route, and visiting wineries in general. I consider myself a bit of a wine snob and I absolutely love going wine tasting, particularly in the old world. I have not been exploring down the old German wine routes, but I imagine that Weinstrasse will just as easily evoke lazy saturdays exploring the wilds of Burgundy and the Tuscan hills, soaking up sun, booze, and knowledge. Which is why, out of all the Chatillon Lux perfumes, Weinstrasse is the one that appeals to me the most.

If I should win I would definitely choose Weinstrasse. I have unfortunately not tried any Chatillon Lux perfumes but I hope to make it a point to remedy that as soon as possible! I live in the US.

  • msnitechemist says:

I’ve bookmarked this page to remind myself to go find these and have a whiff of them. Weinstrasse “Just wear it.” Sounds like good advice 🙂
