Memo Paris Ilha Do Mel Review (Alienor Massenet) + Honey Island Draw

Memo Paris Ilha Do Mel perfume

Be not afeard; the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight, and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears; and sometime voices,
That, if I then had waked after long sleep,
Will make me sleep again: and then, in dreaming,
The clouds methought would open, and show riches
Ready to drop upon me; that, when I waked,
I cried to dream again.
  — Caliban, The Tempest, Act III, Sc. II

Imagine somewhere nearly untouched by human imprint for thousands of years, where the breezes whisper off the edge of the waves’ curl, shaking the trees gently awake. The sun beams kindly, the waters glassy and green blue as mermaid eyes. A mile away, her sails into the wind, a white, weathered boat puffs silently towards shore. Ilha Do Mel, the “honey island,” as locals call it, lies off the starboard bow. Breathe. The air is warm and sweet as honey, so heavy with ripe blossoms you can almost feel it settle like a mantle of flowers on your shoulders.

Alienor Massenet of symrise and Clara Molloy of Memo Paris

Alienor Massenet and Clara Molloy of Memo Paris (from our Creative Directors in Perfumery series)

Symrise perfumer and Memo Paris house nose Alienor Massenet, in concert with creative director Clara Molloy, chart a course to lush Ilha Do Mel, off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. The second fragrance in Memo Paris Graines Vagabondes collection, Ilha Do Mel is dizzyingly pretty, the perfect perfume with which to escape to paradise for a few hours.

The first spray is a juicy, sparkly whoosh of mandarin, juniper, which provide a vibrant counterbalance to the heady hyacinth, jasmine and orange blossom that dominate the perfume. Buxom gardenia lounges gracefully in the background, waiting for a less crowded stage, as the mandarin becomes more pronounced and juicier, its scent turning almost to blackberry. The juniper grows noticeably greener, leaning into its bitter greenness so that the seed registers briefly as under ripe gooseberry. These fruity, acerbic-tangy notes neatly frame the heady florals that soon follow with just the right amount of contrast to keep Ilha Do Mel from tipping into girlishness.

Jasmine and gardenia, with their creamy spice, arrive almost together. A purple grape note appears for a just a second or two, and then evolves, quite wonderfully, into broom. But all this fragrant activity is simply rolling out the carpet for hyacinth. With her characteristic narcotic fuchsia loveliness, she takes her throne at the composition’s heart. If you have ever smelled a handful of her disheveled petals all at once, you will recognize that hypnotically rich, saturated perfume, so unlike any other.  Eventually, soapy orange blossom pushes through quietly and Ilha Do Mel ceases its trajectory towards hyacinth soliflore. I become aware of the tart, prickly green of juniper again. The mandarin, which had all but disappeared, now stands out in relief against the honeyed sweetness of the hyacinth and white florals. I don’t pick up iris concrete or vanilla, but towards the dry-down, sudsy musk becomes prominent, and a slender ribbon of dry vanilla weaves in as the fruit and greenery reappear for an encore.

Ilha do Mel by Memo Paris

Mme Massenet has gathered some of the headiest, loveliest flowers around, scattered them with juniper seeds, and cast them adrift. If you crave a trip to paradise, but have no boat with which to sail there, Memo Paris Ilha Do Mel offers you passage.

Notes: Oil of mandarin, hyacinth accord, oil of juniper, broom flower absolute, gardenia accord, iris concrete, jasmine absolute, orange blossom absolute, vetiver, musk, oil of vanilla.

  • I loved this review! The writing is so beautiful and evocative. I loved the quote from The Tempest at the start, which so beautifully captures a feeling we are all familiar with and frames this perfume in a wonderful light. Lauryn made the floral notes sound incredible—gardenia and hyacinth are some of my favorites. I have yet to try any Memo Paris fragrance, sadly. As for which island I would like to see turned into a perfume, I would have to say Beaver Island. This is a remote island that belongs to Michigan and is covered in untouched nature. As a lover of woody scents, I think it would make a wonderful perfume. Cheers from NC, USA.

Memo Paris can do no wrong. I know their leathers are more popular but I’m absurdly fond of their florals and mourn the discontinuation of Quartier Latin.

Lauryn hits the bullseye with, “dizzyingly pretty”, a high summer bouquet of high quality.

  • Dubaiscents says:

This one sounds amazing, I love a big floral perfume and to add honey to it makes it even more enticing! I find the Memo line so intriguing and love my bottle of Russian Leather. Thank you for the draw. I’d love to try this one. US.

  • Memo Paris has been on my list of perfume house to investigate. I just never knew what scent I felt I needed to try. But after hearing about this honey bomb I’m sure this is the one. In maryland

  • Memo Paris wonderful Niche fragrance house. I have many samples and this is beautiful floral.
I love the way Lauryn mix the florals with an Island feel that’s what makes this so special. As to what Island somewhere beautiful this fragrance deserves the best. Thank you for this Chance. USA

  • jmmcmenamin says:

I’m excited about this fragrance. I love the creative white floral. I don’t have a favorite Memo Paris perfume, but this might be it! My favorite island ever is Santorini Greece. Would love the feeling of being there to be captured in scent. In Louisiana USA.

  • Oh, this article only transported me to that Brazilian island!
The perfume sounds interesting, as I haven’t smelled hyacinth much in fragrances and based on the review, this is the main star of the show, while all the other flowers and juniper make a performance without outperforming the Queen Hyacinth.
I love this house. I’ve only smelled some offerings, in a duty free, some of my favourites I remember being Marfa, Inle and Lalibela.
I’d like to see a perfume inspired by the amazing Seychelles. If there is one, someone please let me know!

  • AleksCipri says:

I own only one Memo fragrance and I love it – Russian Leather. I hope I’ll get a few more, they really are amazing. I really enjoyed Lauryn’s review. I didn’t really know anything about Ilha Do Mel. I really like the sound of it. I’m a big big fan of jasmine and gardenia. I also think it is a very interesting combination to pare them with juniper, hyacinth and vanilla. Sounds amazing! I’m from Illinois, US.

  • Beautiful review Lauryn! I appreciate an unabashedly feminine floral and the notes list sounds exceptional. I’m happy to see broom flower absolute here, since I discovered it in Santa Maria Novella Ginestra. The hyacinth accord it also an unusual note I’ve not encountered much. I do not have a favorite Memo Paris perfume. I’m in MD, USA.

  • One of my faves from Memo Paris is Winter Palace. I liked that Ilha Do Mel has many facets. Fruity, tangy, spicey and floral notes paint a perfect paradise indeed. Thanks for another great article and generous draw! Mich USA

  • I have never tried this but I now know I must!
Loved when Lauryn wrote that MME Massenet gathered the most heady loveliest flowers and scatters them with juniper seeds and set them adrift.

    So beautiful
I am a fan of Argentina and would love this to win

What I like about Lauryn’s description of Ilha Do Mel is that it sounds like a hyacinth-centered fragrance that would still be unisex, with its “fruity, acerbic-tangy notes” balancing the florals. It seems to be a floral that a guy could be comfortable wearing. I have never tried a Memo fragrance, but their reputation is considerable. It doesn’t quite qualify as an island–although you do have to cross a river bridge to get to it–but I would love to see a fragrance inspired by the neighborhood of Uzupis in Vilnius, LIthuania. In NC in the USA.

  • WaltherP99 says:

One of the things I enjoy the most on Cafleurebon, is reading about fragrances I know, especially if the the reviewer opinion is different than mine 🙂
Just like Lauryn Beer i really like Ilha Do Mel , but we like it for slightly different reasons.
Being a guy with dry skin, I have to say to me Ilha Do Mel is mostly clean soapy fragrance, green, spicy and aromatic. In the base I get the iris , and the vetiver. I barely detect any sweetness, jasmine is clean, but restrained.
From Memo Paris i do own Granada , and i’m on my second African Leather bottle , both Alienor Massenet creations
Loyalty Island I’ve been to, I’d love to try Memo Paris fragrance inspired by it.
    All profiles I already follow
    Thank you

  • LightOfJoy says:

What a lovely, lovely, lovely review. Reading it was meditative and transportative. Some of my favorite notes – mandarin, blackberry, juniper, grape facets seem to be overwhelmingly present. How I’d love to inhale them with the headiness and weight of the flowers!

I don’t have experience with Memo Paris perfumes, Ilha Do Mel would be a first if I am lucky enough to win.

I can’t think of an island that I’ve been to that I’d like a perfume made after.

I live in Texas, USA. Thank you for holding this very generous drawing.

  • I do love the hyacinth flower and with all the other florals I can see why this would be perfect for a honeyed heady open. I love the contrast/grounding with juniper though as this sounds perfect!
I don’t have a favorite memo fragrance because I haven’t tried anything from the house yet. The islands I’d like to have turned into a perfume I feel like have already been done…Fiji, Hawaii, or any of the other Pacific islands. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Wow. This has to be one of the most enticing description reviews I’ve ever read. The imagery was sense-provoking. The “honeyed sweetness” and the way the mandarin is said to turn almost blackberry really have me intrigued. Have never gotten a chance to sample any Memo offerings but I’ve heard African Leather is an all-timer. The only island I have been to is Hawaii but I think that would be an incredible fragrance!

  • Sherin Thomas says:

This Frag sounds amazing as I love gourmands, add honey to it makes it even more enticing! I find the Memo line so intriguing and love my bottle of African leather. Thank you for the draw. I’d love to try this one. PA, US.

  • joshuabrian says:

Nice review! Now I want to be on a beach somewhere. Irish Leather is probably my favorite so far. In USA.

  • The only perfume by memo Paris that I’ve tried so far is labiello and I loved it. This review really spoke to me because I love anytime the author describes the scent as a place especially a beautiful untouched piece of the world that we can only visit in dreams. I haven’t been to any islands yet so I can’t answer the last question lol but hopefully eventually that will change. I live in the USA

  • Bryant Worley says:

Lauryn did an excellent job breaking this fragrance down. made the floral notes sound incredible—jasmine being my favorite of the florals. And she makes your mouth water with how juicy she makes this sound – “The first spray is a juicy, sparkly whoosh of mandarin, juniper, which provide a vibrant counterbalance to the heady hyacinth, jasmine and orange blossom that dominate the perfume. Buxom gardenia lounges gracefully in the background, waiting for a less crowded stage, as the mandarin becomes more pronounced and juicier, its scent turning almost to blackberry.” (Can I get a large glass of that?)

I only have Memo’s I’d like to try: all of the “Leathers”; Winter Palace; Sintra, etc.

The island I would like to be turned into a perfume is Barbados, as it is known for its great florals, its fish, its crystal clear waters, and for being the birthplace of Rum. I’m all for the rum, especially spiced rum. Yeah, make that!

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

  • I have never smelled a large bunch of hyacinth, Lauryn’s description is fascinating. A fuchsia scent. Amazing. There is only one island that stands out in my mind and that is Hooper’s Island in Maryland. If the pines and the salt water and a touch of creosote and magic could be turned into a perfume, without the scent of crabs, it would be a divine sentimental memory to me. I haven’t tried any Memo Paris fragrances. I am in the US.

  • I’m traveling primarily through my senses this summer and Lauryn’s review takes me to South America. I especially like that I can almost feel the heaviness of the scent on the air. I have not experienced many Memo Paris fragrances but do love Tamarindo and the description of Odeon. I think Grenada could inspire a wonderful perfume. NC USA

  • I loved this review. I have tested ilha one time and do not remember this perfume. So it was interesting to read this review. soapy orange blossom with juniper and jasmin will smell very fresh and beautiful.
I love Italian Leather from Memo.

Oh Honey Island! I love Lauryn’s vivid imagery, because it transports me back to Koh Samui Thailand, where I spent 2 idyllic holidays surrounded by the heady lushness of the tropics and the love of my husband. My favorite Memo scents right now are Lalibela and Kedu, but I actually love the entire line. I live in California.

  • Uwem Bassey says:

I have not tried any Memo Paris fragrance yet but the review and description of this fragrance sounds very appealing.

  • Lauryn’s review describes Ilha Do Mel very well, with beautiful pictures. Escape to paradise sounds wonderful. Lovely notes in Ilha Do Mel. I have only tried African Leather by Memo Paris, and I like it a lot. Thanks for the review and a generous draw. I am in the USA.

As a Pastry Chef, who also is a small business owner , I own my bakery, I’m glad Alienor Massenet is using high quality ingredients, that’s essential to me.
I had the pleasure of smelling a few Memo Paris fragrances when I was at Osswald boutique , looking for something else.
Ilha Do Mel i have have not smelled there, but at the end , I end up buying the fragrance I originally intended to, and also Memo Tiger’s Nest . I had to , it’s impressive one , and it works wonders . Over 10 hours of longevity and 3-4 hours of strong projection.
Lauryn Beer take on Ilha Do Mel reminded me of making, and eating Mandarin Mousse Cake , with candied blackberries on top , while sitting right next to the beach, and having bouquet of flowers right next to me.
Formentera is the smallest and more southerly of the Balearic Islands .If you want to rest, sleep, eat , and just relax in a rather quiet beach bungalows, just go there.
    So Memo Paris Formentera ?
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

Hingy, picturesque, impressive. Thank you for such a beautiful and juicy description!
I’ve become a big fan of the mandarine note over the past year. It’s perfect for a relaxed and thoughtful mood. I also like to apply fragrances with a dominant note of mandarine before going to bed. Perfectly relaxing.
Ilha Do Mel is described as a very multifaceted, complex and enchanting fragrance. I’m very interested.
    Great article! Thanks!

  • Wow, Lauryn! I love these ideas & inspirations! It’s fascinating to take a fragrant journey by way of the seeds of the world! Graines Vagabondes & other creative projects by Memo Paris will surely startle & delight with their ingenuity & beauty.
While I have never had the privilege to sample their perfumes, I’m excited to get started! I’m quite curious about Winter Palace (having lived a stone’s throw away) and Kedu (the first, I believe, of the Graines Vagabondes fragrances).
❤️ Lauryn’s gorgeous description of Ilha Do Mel truly captures the glory of summer and that longing for rest, rejuvenation, & nature. Juniper seeds & hyacinth! I would Love to experience this combination! Thank you for this opportunity!
As for an island: We just spent a few glorious weeks on Amelia Island. I would love a scent that reflects something like Amelia, or perhaps Cumberland Island (with its wild horses, Dungeness ruins, the barrier island vibe). Thank you, Europerfumes, CaFleureBon, Memo Paris! I live in USA.

  • This review was so thought provoking and well written. I haven’t had the pleasure of trying Memo house yet but this sounds like a beautiful one. Indiana USA

  • Cynthia F. says:

I would love to be on that boat heading to the Ilha do Mel! Last night I watched a documentary on Sergio Vieira de Mello who was from Rio de Janieiro. His fiance explains how after getting home from his travels working for the UN, he would throw down his suitcases and run to the water ecstatic to be home. It must smell heavenly there and this review gives a great picture of the tropical flowers and aromatics. I have not experienced anything from Memo Paris but hope to soon. Texas, USA

  • Memo Paris Ilha Do Mel seems like a fruity floral composition. I am particularly excited with the purple grape note as it is not in many fragrances. My fav. from brand is African Leather. USA

  • After having read from Lauryn’s review, I want to try this fragrance. I enjoy the scent of juniper, and I like certain floral scents too, and this fragrance seems to be juniper and floral-prominent. I want to see how the floral scents pair with the juniper and base of vanilla. I haven’t tried anything yet from Memo Paris but I’d love to try all of their releases. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • roxhas1cat says:

The glassy water like mermaid eyes got me imagining an island vacation. Unique notes, but Memo does amazing unusual (yet wearable ) fragrances. My favorites are Sintra and Italian Leather. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • What a stunning review! This has been on my list to try as I very much enjoy the house of Memo Paris. My fav from the line is lalibela but I have a feeling Ilka do Mel May turmoil with it. This quote captured the essence for me ‘ If you crave a trip to paradise, but have no boat with which to sail there, Memo Paris Ilha Do Mel offers you passage.’ Thanks for an amazing review! Based in MN, US

  • What a stunning review! This has been on my list to try as I very much enjoy the house of Memo Paris. My fav from the line is lalibela but I have a feeling Ilha do Mel May easily trump it. This quote captured the essence for me ‘ If you crave a trip to paradise, but have no boat with which to sail there, Memo Paris Ilha Do Mel offers you passage.’ Thanks for an amazing review! Based in MN, US

  • Thank you Lauryn for another detailed review. As always your note breakdowns are always quite descriptive. My favorite from Memo Paris at this point is Italian Leather but it seems Ilha Do Mel could turn the tables on it. I’d love to see an interpretation of South Padre Island in Texas in a perfume 🙂

  • This is a fantastic review. Funnily, The Tempest has played an outsized role in my summer, and I love the way that quote frames this fragrance. This fragrance sounds gorgeous, and Memo Paris has long been on the shortlist of houses I’d intended to explore. I’d love to try this fragrance. I’m in the US.

  • Beautiful review! Wish to spend at least one day in Ilha island with fresh and honey air. Love description of this perfume with mandarin, juniper, orange blossom, jasmine and iris.
    Love Irish Leather from Memo.

  • IvanVelikov says:

Ilha do Mel island full of the sugary sweetness , greenness looks gorgeous, almost untouched by human hands.
Honey meets tangerine, zesty juniper and vanilla , iris (hopefully), I think we have sating the senses tropical floral-fruity fragrance.
I have samples of Tamarindo, Argentina, African, Italian and Russian Leather, and Sintra. Tama, Argentina and Sintra are all great for the summer.
    Memo Aruba ?
    Beautiful giveaway, thanks a lot.

As someone who spends a lot of time in Brazil, Lauryn’s review perfectly encapsulates the narcotic headiness of summer in Brazil. I haven’t been to Ilha do Mel, but this review has me checking schedules and inns. I love “sparkly whooshes” of mandarin. Such evocative writing. I love African Leather from Memo Paris. I’d like to have the Hawaiian Islands turned into a fragrance.
    I live in the USA.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

This sounds like a really lovely floral. The only other Memo I’ve sampled is African Leather which I find amazing. In New England we have tiny islands, many of which are protected for wildlife. I’d love to experience a perfume inspired by that local. A bit wild, nautical, often cold, and forbidden to humans. Thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • sephrenia300 says:

Great review! I particularly liked how you described the gardenia as “buxom”, and waiting in the background for a “less crowded stage”. I have described the leather in one of my favorite fragrances, Bandit, the exact same way. One thing I like about this perfume is that it’s fruity but not too sweet and girly. I find most fruity perfumes too cloying, but the way you describe them as ascorbic gives me hope this can be a grown up fruit forward floral. I have yet to try any Memo Paris fragrances so I don’t have a favorite, but this one could definitely become a staple. And as for an island that I would turn into a perfume, I would love to smell or even create one based on Hvar. The beauty and fun-loving surface, yet contrasted with hints of a turbulent history, all culminating in a resilience and generosity of spirit. A study in contrasts brimming with hedonism…oh gosh I can smell it now! (In the US).

  • Ilha Do Mel is floral citrusy fragrance, slightly sweet, slightly green and made by famous perfumer like Alienor Massenet?Welcoming vacation fragrance i’d love to win.
Don’t have Memo bottle yet, but four samples , Moon Fever, African Leather, Tiger’s Nest and Tamarindo . Out of the four, Tiger’s Nest and African Leather are my favorites.
Bonaire I’ve been to twice, fragrance with such name will fit Memo Paris catalog quite nicely.
    Thanks for the draw
    USA

  • I love the detailed description of the notes in Memo Paris Ilha Do Mel as described in the article, allowing the fragrance to come to life. My favorite from the house is Irish Leather. Would be interesting to see how the scents of Puerto Rico would transpire into a fragrance. Ky/USA

  • All those flowers weaving in and out of the hyacinth sound like my kind of spring/summer favorite. Thank you for the review and the draw. I’m in the US but I’d much rather be on that sunny beach surrounded by those green hills. My favorite Memo scent is probably Granada (which my daughter wears).

  • DulciusExAsperis says:

Lovely hyacinth sprinkled with juniper… Sounds absolutely gorgeous and now I want to visit this island. I’ve only sampled Marfa by Memo, but found it lovely. I would be so happy to get to try this one. I’m in the USA!

  • Invigorating fragrance, with orange blossom, fresh citrus, a bit spicy and a little bit of sweetness.
Nice , balance is needed in our lives…at least I need it. Just by the look of the pictures, Ilha do Mel island feels like a place I’d like to be right now.
African Leather is the best Memo Paris i personally own, there’s one more i really like , it’s called Kedu . Smells like eating sesame bar, and drinking tea.
Last time i’ve been there was over 10 years ago, but Iyonola or Hewanorra , the two old names of Saint Lucia I’d like to see made into perfums .
Thanks to Europerfumes for the giveaway, and to Lauryn Beer of course

Thank you for the beautiful review Lauryn.

I loved your review because it made me imagine that I was canoeing slowly, along a stream that had fragrant overhanging floral plants on either side, the flowers releasing their perfume in the humid air. I can almost see myself standing in my little canoe, reaching out to pull the flowers closer to me, so that I can bask in their fragrance.

Such a great writeup on the floral part of this scent.

    Cheers from WI, USA

Ilha do Mel is cozy natural smelling fragrance with citruses, juniper and flowers.
Lauryn look on the picture well represents the character of Brazilians, they can be laid-back, gentle but also passionate people.
African Leather, cozy date time scent I’m well aware of, I had to buy it because of smelling good , its high compliment factor , and versatility. Same thing I’m expecting from IIha do Mel.
Menorca is a paradise if you’re into diving , turn it into perfume.
    Exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • Bright, fresh and energetic, up to date floral fruity bouquet, some greenness, all is soaked in golden honey. IIha do Mel here i come.
I should finally catch up with Memo catalog of fragrances.
I believe most will go with tropical islands, and names , not me. Isle of Man I’ve been to a couple of times to watch Isle of Man TT , wild motorcycle racing competition like no other. Isle of a Man Memo , or Floraïku fragrance name would intrigue me .
    Top opportunity, thanks

  • My favorite is African Leather, also Tamarindo. Island that should be turned into a scent is Cuba. The floral honey sounds nice in this one.
