NEW FRAGRANCE: Parfumerie Generale “Indochine” A Portrait in Sepia + Preview Draw

There are perfumers for who I look forward to seeing whatever the next thing is they choose to create. Pierre Guillaume has been one of those for me. Over the past year between the Huitieme Art Parfums series and the limited editions like Bois Naufrage and Tonkamande there have been plenty to admire. Still I wanted M. Guillaume to return to his original line Parfumerie Generale. The last Parfumerie Generale fragrance, Papyrus et Ciane, was one of my favorite fragrances of last year. In that fragrance M. Guillaume resurrected a classic base, mousse de saxe, and used it as the foundation for that fragrance. I just received the new Parfumerie Generale release for September called Indochine and instead of an ingredient from the past M. Guillaume was inspired by a geographical place from the past; the French colonies in Asia which made up Indochine.

His inspiration for the 25th Parfumerie Generale perfume is a pair of sepia photographs from 1920 Indochine which depict a cruise on the Mekong River. As I have been wearing Indochine over that last few days it felt like a fragrance which has its own unique patina. M Guillaume chose ingredients from throughout the region as his notes for Indochine. He chose Honey from Laos, Pepper from the city of Kampot in Cambodia, Ceylonese Cardamom; and two very unique ingredients. The first is a traditional wood paste use widely in cosmetics in Burma called Tanakha. The second is an opulent Benzoin from Siam which is the central core of Indochine. It is this Benzoin which creates the foundation of Indochine and it is another tour de force from M. Guillaume.

The Benzoin is in place right from the first moments. You get but a moment to admire its beauty unfiltered before cardamom and honey show up to accentuate the spicy and sweet facets of the resin. A pinch of pepper adds some heat and then the Tanakha arrives. In reading about Tanakha it is a native tree to Burma which is ground into a fragrant paste used in makeup. As a note in perfumery it shares a lot of similarity to sandalwood. It has the slight sweetness of sandalwood but it also has a hint of green quality which replaces the creamy quality of sandalwood. Just as with mousse de saxe in Papyrus et Ciane, M Guillaume has introduced me to a new note in Tanakha and I hope it shows up again in some future fragrance.

Indochine has excellent longevity and slightly below average sillage. Indochine tends to add a perfumed coating like sepia does to photographs, subtle but striking.

As I said above I will follow almost anywhere M. Guillaume wishes to take me olfactively. On this trip into Indochine he has created a luminous fragrance out of spices, woods, and resin much like creating a diamond out of coal it is a feat only the best can do consistently. This Fall let M. Guillaume transport you to the Mekong River and set sail.

Disclosure: This review was based on a preview bottle provided by Parfumerie Generale.

Thanks to the largesse of Parfumerie Generale I am going to share with one lucky commenter. I have made a 2.5mL sample from the bottle they provided me for review. To win leave a comment naming your favorite Parfumerie Generale fragrance or the one you are most interested in trying. Draw will close July 11, 2011.

  • Mark, what a beautiful review, this sounds divine and the name Indochine is so cool also. I have been an avid PG fan and own several of his fab creations. My favorite to this day is the elusive PG Mio Bjao. I have several other i love like Felanilla, Brulure de Rose etc. the one i would like to try must would be this one the Indochine. Awesome review, makes me look forward to the release. Thanks Mark.

  • Very good review, this one sounds perfect for me.I’ve never tryed any of PG scents and I would love to try all of them or at least Coze,Cuir Venenum and Cuir dIris.

  • I really liked the analogy of the Indochine patina to sepia. The photographs are beautiful and evocative, so Indochine must be as well.

My favorite Parfumerie Generale is Private Collection L’Ombre Fauve…a lovely spicy bounty.

  • Un Crime Exotique for sure.. it has been on my sniff wish list for a loooong time. 🙂

  • ElizabethN says:

I would love to try this – the notes sound fabulous! I haven’t tried any PG scents apart from Psychotrope, which was a little too strange for me. I would love to try Cozé and Intriguant Patchouli, since I love Oriental and spicy scents.

  • Benzoin? Cardamom? This sounds like something I will have to try!
My favorite Parfumerie Generale is the bottle I own, which is L’Ombre Fauve. I have sampled quite some of them over the time though.

  • I like Tubereuse Couture and Un Crime Exotique. I would like to try the new one subject to drawing. Many thanks.

  • Where do I begin .. there are many I like very much… Private collection Corps et Ames(a true chypre)which Ida and Naz from perfume shoppe love Un crime Exotique, L’eau de Circe ; then there is Iris Oriental, Gardenia Grand Soir which is an homage to haute couture https://cafleurebon.com//behind-the-bottle-pierre-guillaume-on-gardenia-grand-soir/

L’Oiseau de Nuit (a private collection perfume) is my signature scent from PG and I panic if I run low. Pralines de Santal would be my second favorite; yet there are so many to explore…Musc Maori, Ilang Ivohibe ( I think this one calls my name LOUDLY), et Brulere de Rose. The fabled Mio Bjao that Claudia mentioned I sniffed but once and can never forget.
Indochine sounds ESPECIALLY fascinating to me as Mark beautifuly review for the first time I cared about the notes more than the story: honey, Siamese benzoin, Tanakha, cardamon.
Ps. I wear benzoin straight up,so I really am excited. The wonderful thing about Pierre is you never really know where he will take you and what seems obvious is not, but once you are there you don’t want to leave.

  • I’ve never really had the chance to try many of PG’s offerings but I do like Aomassai. I’d love to try Coze and Cadjmere, and of course Indochine which sounds just like my sort of thing!

  • Sounds exciting, thank you for the preview! My favourite PG so far is very comforting Cadjmere, I was also highly impressed by noble Gardenia Grand Soir- wish it could join regular line-up. Pierre is such a talented nose- PG and Huiteme Art Parfums are just wonderful offerings.

  • Great review and it sounds wonderful! I LOVE Aomassai and can’t wait to try this one!!

  • Mark, I am with you on that: anywhere Mr. PG wants to take me I’m willing to go! Some trips have certainly been better than others, but his ouvre is distinguished all the same. My absolute favorite of his is the elusive Cuir Santalion, which is perhaps my most prized possession! But of his regular line I love Cuir Venenum, Hyperessence Matale, and Querelle of the special editions. But I have many others still lingering on my wishlist from his line(s), and I’m afraid this will be one more. I’d love to try it!

  • Thanks for the great review, Indochine really sounds exciting. I must admit I am massively behind in testing the PGs, numbered or private, M. Guillaume is not a lazy man 😉 But I love felanilla, and top on my must-try list are: Corps et Ames and Bois Blond, honestly, I can not say why I haven’t ordered samples yet 🙂

  • What made me falll in love with PG was Iris Taizo but this new Indochine sounds wonderful1

  • What an artful choice of ingredients. I can’t wait to try this. My current favorites are L’Oiseau de Nuit and L’Ombre Fauve. But even the ones that I don’t consider favorites are interesting to wear.

  • I became a long time fan of PG when I moved to London in mid 2009. I was lucky enough to meet the man himself at an evening hosted by Les Scenteurs in Belgravia, he is the loveliest man (and mighty nice to look at too I might add!)! So knowledgeable and passionate about his craft & was happy to answer all our questions. I already owned Yuzu Ab Irato (I needed something to cut through London’s humidity- pleased to report it’s just as refreshing now I’m back in Australia when the mercury rises!). So after his talk I was debating between about 3 scents, M. Guillaume himself smelled two different scents I had on my wrists, and he agreed with the owner of Les Scenteurs, and Corps et Ames it was (the rival scent was Cuir Venenum, but C & A was a clear winner).

However, my favourite’s that I am yet to get full bottles of are the divine L’ombre Fauve, Lounges & Brulure de Rose. I adore L’Ombre fauve, every time I wear it I get people wanting to snuggle up to me! It’s like a very posh cashmere or mink blanket that you wrap yourself & a significant other in on a chilly night in front of a fire. Ultimate comfort scent.

I have yet to meet a PG fragrance I do not like, that is rare in any line, but especially one as large as this! Quite a feat!

  • you smell!!! says:

Wow! Another PG, I love the line but L’Ombre Fauve is my absolute favorite. Can’t wait to try it.

  • I’m just getting to know the scents of PG and recently ordered a mess of samples I am working through, so no favorites yet. I am looking forward to Manguier Metisse.

This scent sounds wonderfully exotic – I’d love to try some.

  • My favorite PG scent is Tonkamande. I’d love to try the fresh take on sandalwood in Indochine after loving the unique sandalwood aldehyde treatment of Tonkamande. Thanks for the review and giveaway!

  • This sounds so wonderful. I love many of the PG line, including Cuir d’Iris and Ilang Ivohibe. It’s always exciting to anticipate M Guillaume’s next creation. Thanks for the draw opportunity!

  • sonia garcia says:

I love Pierre Guillaume and his creations, my fav is Iris Taizo, love that one. And of course I’d love to win the Indochine sample.

  • Brulure de Rose, Eau de Circé, Tonkamande, Praline Santal, Bois Naufragué, it is an endless list ) they suit every possible mood.

Please write me into the draw, it is always so exiting to get to know something new from Pierre!

  • My favorite PG is L’Ombre Fauve. It’s an amber than is as light as it is dark. I look forward to trying his new releases!

  • Interesting to see so much love for L’Ombre Fauve…a favorite here as well, but my first choice is Coze. Always interested in what PG is up to and this one sounds well worth sampling.

  • My favorite PG is Cadjmere’, and I’d love to try Indochine, it sounds like something I would really love.

  • kastehelmi says:

Wow Michelyn, L’Oiseau de Nuit is my favorite too, though I haven’t owned more than a sample. So lusciously smooth, dark, but not scary-thick-heavy.

I would love to try Indochine as I love to try spicy perfumes that aim to smell like places other than India and Arabia, as those places are “done” soo often!
I would also love to try Papyrus de Ciane, Cuir d’Iris (love iris), Gardenia Grand Soir, Tonkamande, Drama Nuui…Papyrus de Ciane really sounds good–I like papyrus a lot in Nicolas Danila’s Arabian Garden and a good not-too-sharp green perfume is so satisfying.

Parfumerie Generale are all so interesting even if I don’t like to wear most of them. Felanilla, Aomassi, Iris Oriental are all too sweet but could smell very nice on a friend maybe–though Felanilla is kind of seducing me anyway. Coze, Psychotrope and Ilang Ivohibe I find unpleasant…Cadjmere, Bois Blond, Bois de Copaiba, Brulure de Rose, Harmatan Noir are all ones I feel like retesting even if they didn’t seem to be for me when I tried them. Even those I found unpleasant I would be happy to test again, except for maybe Ilang Ivohibe (cloying)–Coze seemed to stir up my allergies but it has great personality…..

  • Brulure de Rose, Yuzu Ab Irato and Eau de Circe are my favorites in the line, although I like all of them. Parfumerie Generale is a wonderful brand.
I’d love to try Indochina. It sounds really nice.

  • I ve recently tested Tonkamande and wrote a little review on it for our Arome community, but I can say whatever I came across from PG was an excellent job, so my friends and are very curious about this new release. THanks for your excellent job on review, it tells us a lot about the scent and also makes us want to try it LOL.

  • The PG I’ve heard so much about that truly piques my interest is Tonkamonde. The notes are right up my alley. But, this, Indochine: benzoin, cardamom, honey? This could be a great love as well!

  • Tourbillion says:

My favorite from Parfumerie Generale so far is Cuir D’Iris, but there are so many that I haven’t tried yet, so that could change. I’d really love to try this one too!

  • Mika Elli says:

My favourite is Coze with its wonderful spicy herbal patchouli and burning wood feel, very distinctive. Second is the new limited edition Praline de Santal, I might have to get a bottle of that one soon as well. Please enter me in the draw, I’d love to try Indochine, thanks!

  • I haven’t had the chance to try any of the PG line yet (maybe I’ll win the draw and get to start with Indochine…) While they all sound fascinating, L’Ombre Fauve and Querelle are the ones that I’ve always meant to sample.

  • This is a wonderful opportunity, thank you, Mark!

My favorite PG fragrance is Un Crime Exitoque, but I cannot refrain from giving an honorable mention to some of the Huitieme Art Perfumes — Aube Pashmina, Ambre Ceruleen, and Fareb, they are wonderful!

I had Iris Oriental on my wish-to-test list forever, and I did lay my hands on Iris Taizo sample — very nice, does anyone know if a new name came with a reformulation??

Tonkamande is the one I’d like to sniff but haven’t yet, and many PGs are on my test list – Aomassai, Louages Profanes, and now Indochine…

  • Warum iris taizo and oriental are identical according to Pierre Guilaume
We are big fans of huitième arts and if You look on the right of the site you will see my interview about their creation

  • I would love to try Indochine for the simple reason that I have been obsessed with Indochina since I was in my late teens. In fact, as I write, the students in my Vietnam War class are taking an exam. I even took a solo trip to Vietnam a few years ago, which only confirmed for me what a truly beautiful part of the world it is. Thus, I would appreciate the chance to try this perfume like no one else!

  • I love PG scents, particularly the gourmands with a twist which manage never to be sickly sweet. My favourite is Brulure de Rose and I’d love a chance to try the new one – sounds so fabulous and unique.

  • matildaben says:

I would love to be entered in the draw. I have not tried any PG except for Musc Maori, which I didn’t like (I don’t like the cocoa note in most things), but I have had a chance to try the 8th Art line and my favorites from there are Manguier Metisse and Aube Pashmina. The PG I am most interested in trying is Iris Oriental – and Indochine!

  • I liked most ( till now) Papyrus Cyan, but I didn’t have many opportunities- maybe this time…
I would loe to be enterd the draw- thank you

  • I was at the same Les Senteurs event as Ingrid which is weird! The one I bought was Drama Nuui though and that is my favourite. Love the name Indochine.

  • My first love was with Un Crime Exotique. Although I have about 8 of his fragrances in regular rotation I now find myself reaching for Bois Blonde more than any of the others. A few years ago I spent 3 days traveling the Mekong through Laos on a boat like the one in the 2nd pic. A memory I’d love to relive through Pierre Guillaume’s perfume.

  • marcopietro says:

My favorite PG fragrance is Querelle, the second one is L’Eau Guerriere. Indochine sounds very interesting, I hope to try it soon!

  • I love PG and my favorite is L’Ombre Fauve and looking forward to try this new one.

    Thanks

  • Michellle Hunt says:

I’ve tried Praline Santal and Un Crime Exotique and love them both! So layered and warm, depth without heaviness. I’m looking forward to trying more PG fragrances!

  • sounds lovely and what a wonderful description
