Antonio Alessandria noir obscur review

The long black nights, when the moon hides her face, when the stars are afraid, are not so black. The silence that dwells in the forest is not so black.”

Best Noir niche perfumes

Smoke rolls in as fog, billowing like a grey muslin curtain across the streets, down unlit alleyways where something always hides, into starless night. And hidden in its cloak, a redolence of pitch, of damp woods hidden in a sunless forest where huge-eyed animals watch with sunblind eyes. Rising and falling like a slow spectre, it spreads noiselessly, obscuring the shadows of buildings, of trees, of ourselves, till even the streetlamps and neon disappear into its grey shroud. Noir Obscur, from perfume storyteller par excellence Antonio Alessandria, slowly draws you inwards like a secret, as if a reckoning has come.

Originally created as Alessandria’s personal fragrance, Noir Obscur centers on some favourite elements, such as cedar, flowers, citrus and incense.I selected the raw materials I liked most at that period and tried to balance the composition,” he relates. “Smelling the first trial I said to myself: ‘wow it’s totally dark, I have to close my eyes and think about light to explore this black, deep maze.’ Forgoing aroma chemicals that are typically use to lighten and aerate such as ISO E Super and hedione, Alessandria went all out with the formula for Noir Obscur, using 45% of expensive naturals for the final composition, which he describes as “baroque” with a “tactile sensual sensuality, like the feeling and sensorial pleasure you experience when you touch a piece of velvet.”

While Alessandria’s Nacre Blanche  and  Nuit Rouge are dedicated to the moon, Antonio Alessandria Noir Obscur is the anti-moon of the trilogy, summoning a night absent of light “during which we can go deep inside our soul to discover something unravelled in the darkness that lets us hide … but also to the memory of light that illuminates our dark side. It’s also sweet, like a sin could be.”  It begins with a short burst of davana and orange that quickly fade into bosky aromas of woody smoke, like a campfire dwindling in mist. The patchouli comes forward soon after, with earthy, mulchy and bitter chocolate aromas that underline the sense of damp forest. While the patchouli intensifies, rooty, dark green vetiver, incense and pencil-like cedar begin to drift in, accompanied by hits of pepper and clove..

At this point, Antonio Alessandria Noir Obscur seems to be heading into traditional male territory. You might expect Noir Obscur to fade like a ghost into a penumbra of opaque scents as it heads towards its conclusion. But anyone familiar with Alessandria’s oeuvre will know that this is not the end of the olfactory tale, and instead, the fragrance turns down a road less traveled. The softness Alessandria mentioned starts to manifest through a subtle, gradual cascade of floral notes. At first, osmanthus is obscured by its affinity with the leather, but its bright fruitiness begins to peek from behind the veil. Eventually, I also smell the pastry-and-carrot scent of iris. The flowers never become pronounced or bright but add an elusive roundness to the composition. These notes, particularly the iris, intensify long into Noir Obscur’s development, drawing it away from the classic masculinity of its earlier direction. Some hours later, a slight bodily pong of castoreum slinks in, the iris melds with smoke and incense, and the perfume drifts from moody and introspective to quietly carnal. There are enough floral and animalic hints to make this accessible to anyone who appreciates a smoky, voluptuous scent. Antonio Alessandria Noir Obscur is the perfume of a nighttime in which Juliet awaits her Romeo; a midnight garden of loamy sensuality where darkness offers a haven from the garish day.

Notes: Orange, castoreum, tangerine, davana, rum, spices, Bulgarian rose, jasmine, iris, osmanthus, leather, patchouli, vetiver, cedarwood, frankincense, ambergris, musk.

Really beautiful bottle! I enjoyed the review and I liked most the last lines, specially that one in where Night Obscur is a fragrance made for the Juliet awaiting her Romeo.
Thank you for the draw! Europe

I love that this sounds dark, I feel like everything I’ve been sampling lately is just too light and bright. I live in the US.

Rising and falling like a slow spectre….draws you inwards like a secret….WOW…MISTERY, MISTERY, MISTERY. What kind of fragrance is this one????….Intriguing, interesting, NOIR OBSCUR.
    I live in London, UK.

  • By it’s baroque , dark and smoky body that unveils floral undertones this fragrance resembles a nocturnal ouverture .Let’s listen it’s notes, i hope! Thanks from Romania

  • KMBfragrance says:

It’s intriguing to imagine exploring the dark in spring when the warming weather draws us to green, fresh, and floral-forward fragrances. I also love the idea of being able to access a more intimate corner of the perfumer’s artistry, experiencing what was first their personal fragrance. I live in Missouri USA.

  • I had a chance to try this fragrance a few years ago in Italy and later through a sample. I love Noir Obscur’s dark, rich, and complex character along with the elegant black bottle and packaging. I completely agree that Antonio’s tells unique and evocative stories through his creations. I am definitely a fan and I would love to see either Indigo or The Scent Room carry his line. And, I am excited about this opportunity to win. I am in the USA.

  • I always prefer to purchase from Lucky Scent in the US as I’m from Minnesota. I could certainly appreciate a dark fragrance such as this, living in such a cold and dark climate. The description actually reminds me of Carl Jung and confronting the shadow or sub conscious through moral effort in order to illuminate and then burn up those aspects of ourselves that no longer server our higher self or purpose. I’m truly intrigued by this one. Lovely expose.

  • GennyLeigh says:

Lovely bottle and I like the noir vibe of the fragrance. The emphasis on natural, quality ingredients is appealing. A smokey, leathery, earthy scent is what I would expect from a “dark” perfume and this does not disappoint. The iris, davana and tangerine are unexpected but seems to lighten the composition. Would live to try this. I would like to see this line carried at luckyscent and Twisted Lily. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • NikkoNikko says:

Wow this scent sounds amazing. It’s hitting all my favorite aspects-wood, incense, smoke-with the added intrigue of florals and fruitiness. The bottle is gorgeous as well. This is absolutely getting on my to sample list! From Idaho, USA

  • lorenzo.papi says:

I’m very curious about this fragrance, the notes and the imagines in this interview make me feel a deep sense of obscure but in the most dark place there is also the most powerful light.

  • After reading from this review, I believe that I would enjoy this fragrance and I truly want to try it. I like the idea of it having a lot of high-quality ingredients. I like the use of cedar, flowers, citrus and incense notes. I am under the impression that this fragrance might be considered non-linear, e.g. on account of the use of iris, osmanthus, and castoreum. I want to see why this fragrance is considered “dark”. I live in MD., U.S.A. I hope to try all of the fragrances that are made by perfumer, Antonio Alessandria; if Maxaroma sells these fragrances then they might be more affordable for me than elsewhere.

  • Noir Obscur seems intriguing as Alessandria created it for himself and it has high ratio of natural essences. It is a smoky composition, true to its name, and has notes like cedar which I enjoy. USA.

  • The name and the design just speak to me so well. It seems from the review that the actual scent is going to sing in my frequency as well. I know many nice retailers in the US. I hope at least one of them carry the brand soon. I’m so eager to try it for real. (US)

  • Dubaiscents says:

I like the idea of a dark scent with light hidden within. I’m sure anything by Antonio will be amazingly unique and I would love to try this one, especially knowing that this was meant to be his own personal scent. I would love to see Indigo Perfumery carry his line in the US. Thank you for the chance for one of these gorgeous bottles! I’m in the US.

  • NiceVULady says:

One almost shivers from Lauryn’s description. There’s an interesting combination of notes which I would love to sample, for example, the rum and the iris. Many thanks to Lauryn for a stellar review and many thanks to Antonio Alessandria for making this draw possible. I’d love for this to be carried on Luckyscent. I’m in the USA

  • Floral notes hidden below dark opaque ones in Antonio Alessandria’s Noir Obscur seems a dreamlike fragrance to me!Thanks from Romania

  • Claumarchini says:

Noir Obscur seems like a complex fragrance, I love the description of how it makes you think that it is more of a male scent, but then the floral notes all a sudden kicks in and turn the first impression around! I also love the beautiful black bottle, and I would love to win this perfume: I have tried a few fragrances by Antonio and liked them all, he is an amazing perfumer and his fragrances always evoke strong memories and sensations.
    Greetings from Italy

  • Giorgia295 says:

Love the mood this brand is carrying with its storytelling. I think the fragrances would be super quality since they cointans a high dose of oils. The notes of this fragrance I think i would like since i’m a fan of citrus notes and resins notes.
    Sending love from Milan, italy

  • It is insightful knowing this perfume was the Mr. Alessandria´s personal fragrance made with his some of his preferred elements : cedar, flowers, citrus and incense. I agree 100% with him on his preferences. He uses a really nice bottle to introduce us the noir vibe of the fragrance made with natural and high quality ingredients. The absence of light that the name of the fragrances relates, is a way to some soul searching and discovering our dark side…floral ,animalic, smoky, voluptuous … I would love to try this and spend some dark nights with this fragrance in my skin. I live in Spain, EU.

  • Laurentiu says:

I like Antonio’s style and the way he plays with the notes. I am sure that Noir Obscur will also be a hit amongst his fans. Thank you!

Floral notes, animalic hints, a smoky scent with a voluptuous vibe to it! Sounds really, really good! Please count me in for this one!
Thanks for the draw! European reader here!

  • Reading this review is like reading poetry, it is full of lyricism and metaphors! I am sure that wearing this fragrance, feels like poetry on the skin! I am curious now about the other two from the trilogy – Nacre Blanche and Nuit Rouge – as where Noir Obscur sits in this trio of night whisperers!

  • This parfum is such a story of Romeo and Juliet or Almost Heaven, so many stories about the dark side. I imagine the smell transponses you in a dark world with a lot of deep tears and at the same time with beautiful memories. The notes of orange, rose and jasmine make me want to test it.

This fragrance seems to be an artistic combination of dark-smoky, and floral notes. Certainly, it is very impressive that it contains such a high percentage of natural ingredients. Greetings from Greece.

  • Lauryn, a truly engaging description of this fragrance. How can I not be intrigued by this one? It may aid in looking deep into my own soul for the light and dark and where the find balance in the ridges and valleys of my soul. In turn, helping me to find balance in all things.

    Really good review Lauryn, congrats
Nuit Rouge I’ve sampled because of your review again on Cafleurebon. In Sicily , and the region Rhubarb Grapefruit Custard Cake is part of the local culinary. It’s a bit tart , juicy and delicious , just like Nuit Rouge.
I always relate fragrances to some sort of food. Your take on Noir Obscur reminded me of making, and later eating Orange cake with glazed oranges, and chocolate ganache, with iris field next to me.
I would like to see Antonio Alessandria Parfums wildly available in US, Nuit Rouge is awesome.
Working with Europerfumes would be beneficial for the brand, and us , the buyers.
Appreciate Lauryn review, and the giveaway campaign

  • So glad to see a review of Noir Obscur. An underrated gem. I like it a lot especially on hot summer nights. It is dark and mysterious but for me it has something that makes the night lights shine. Maybe thanks to some spicy, fruity and boozy notes. I like that it combines dark introspective mood with soft velvety sensuality. Smoky, dark „drawing inwards like a secret” but carnal and voluptuous at the same time. As Lauryn beautifully puts it „a nighttime in which Juliet awaits her Romeo; a midnight garden of loamy sensuality where darkness offers a haven from the garish day”.

  • IvanVelikov says:

I not only tried Antonio Alessandria fragrances , but my favorite one is exactly Noir Obscure. Wow
I have smelled them back then at Luckyscent , and Noir Obscure was the best one, I even bought a sample. I have to admit I perceive Noir Obscure a bit differently than Lauryn.
Boozy and overly spicy in a good way opening , and in the base leather is pretty prominent, there’s fruity sweetness too.
I do agree it’s kind of Gothic, but I personally would not paint it in such black nuances.
All Antonio Alessandria fragrances were available at Luckyscent, but not anymore.
I’d like to see Antonio Alessandria fragrances in
Indigo Perfumery , Beverly Hills Perfumery, Luckyscent , high end department stores too.
Another beautiful giveaway , thanks a lot

I must say that the bottle is gorgeous. I like my frags dark, but lately have been wanting more airiness, so this may be an answer. Bonus question: Luckyscent, for the most exposure for the perfumer. In the US.

  • I love dark, smokey, leathery fragrances, so this sounds like something I’d really like. And what a stunning bottle! I’d love to see luckyscent carry this line. I live in Oklahoma USA. Thanks for the draw!

  • I don’t grasp all these jumps yet: Fruity – traditional masculine – smoky – floral…

So that is enough reason to try it myself! I’d love to win this to Germany, thanks for the draw!

  • Leather and rum softened by flowers, a dark and romantic fragrance which is still able to provide voluptuousness and comfort sound wonderful to me.
I have heard many great things about Alessandria’s perfumes, and this piqued my interest further.
    I am in the EU.
    Thanks!

A wonderful selection of notes! I am curious about this perfume because I have never tried anything created by Antonio Alessandria.
    Thank you!

  • I agree…

We all have a dark side, it depends if we accept it, reveal it or talk about it (or not).

This perfume sounds like heaven to me, like touching a dark plush velvet petal of a flower: “tactile sensual sensuality, like the feeling and sensorial pleasure you experience when you touch a piece of velvet.”

    Thank you for this chance,

    I live in Europe

  • Bryant Worley says:

As I was reflecting on all of the delicious darkness in this fragrance, I thought of some iconic words from Vincent Price: “Darkness falls across the land….The midnight hour is close at hand”.And that’s what strikes me about Noir Obscur – it is truly dark, even muting the ‘shafts of light’ (florals and sweetness) that threaten to break through. I must sniff this.

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA, and I wouldn’t mind having Antonio Alessandria Parfums Noir Obscur retailed at any reputable retailer since it’ll still cost the same, and besides, I do everything online.

Thanks for this draw, This perfume sounds really interesting with orange, castoreum, rum and rose. I live in the EU.

  • The most surprising thing about Antonio Alessandria is the evolution of his perfumes. He is able to squeeze each note to the fullest and works to get from them what he wants in each phase of the perfume. I enjoy dark perfumes and Noir Obscur will be next. Greetings from Spain.

  • Antonio Alessandria Parfums Noir Obscur definitely draws you in with floral, anamalic, incense, and especially the description voluptuous. Could see it retailers (Macy) and Amazon carting Antonio Alessandria in the USA.

  • From the words he carefully chooses and uses, it looks like Mr. Alessandria has a strong weakness for everything aesthetic. I am curious on how he translates this sensibility into his work.

What a beautiful journey that was! Thanks for the chance! NY, USA

  • A bit sweet, a bit dark , a bit leathery, woody and smoky , I believe Noir Obscure like Lauryn said truly is “smoky voluptuous scent”
Antonio Alessandria fragrances are hard to find, up until now not you can’t find them in US , even in EU it’s not an easy task.

What strikes me about Antonio Alessandria Parfums Noir Obscur is that it posesses a very masculine fragrance profile, but still is unisex and accessible at the same time. Somehow this composition manages to use 45% natural ingredients even though it’s not very fresh or floral. The smoky and woody scent profile of this fragrance got my attention. I am from the USA and I would like to see Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Ave carry this fragrance brand so it’s more accessible to everyone.

  • I did not test anything from this house, but I see that their fragrances have some great reviews and that means something!
Thank you for this draw! Good luck to everyone!

  • It has lots of interesting notes and I am curious on how they are mixed together. I liked how this fragrance was thought as a perfume of the night, for a Juliet that awaits her Romeo. Thanks for the draw! I am based in Europe.

Thank you for the beautiful review Lauryn.

Wouldn’t it be fantastic to wear a fragrance that Antonio composed for himself?

I love the play of all these exotic notes. In some way, it reminds me of a symphony with dark and slow movements and lighter, headier interludes.

The bottle is absolutely fantastic – love to the person who designed it!

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Oo la la! Sounds very mysterious, but full of appreciable pleasures. I love the images you conjure of fog spreading through streets, and the darkest moonless nights. A couple of (r)etailers in which I’d love to find this house: Luckyscent and Olfactif… unless they want to do Sephora or Ulta, but maybe that would make them TOO accessible. (USA)

  • I like how Noir Obscur sounds dark yet not too heavy. The citruses and florals balance the composition. It looks quite mysterious but still highly wearable. I hope it can be my companion this spring. I live in Denmark, EU.

First time I’ve heard Antonio Alessandria Parfums was on Sebastian YouTube channel. I remember he did a 10 minutes interview with Antonio Alessandria, I don’t remember if it was from Pitti , or Esxence (2022…hopefully) … Then I remember a few reviews on Cafleurebon, for the Rhubarb one , and Rusty Vibes, name I can’t forget 🙂
According to Lauryn contribution , Noir Obscure is grown up artisanal fragrance, cedar, flowers, citrus and incense. Artistic indeed, without crossing the line. All year round scent, if you ask me.
Unfortunately I have not smelled Antonio Alessandria fragrances , but I’d love to.
I think if the house wants to step up strong on US market, working with reliable distributor like Europerfumes would be instrumental.
    Nice giveaway, thanks

  • I’m almost certain I’m one of the few, if not the only Cafleurebon reader here , who actually smelled Noir Obscure 🙂
I used to go before..you know…to fragrance meetings twice per month, where all should bring brand new, or relatively unknown fragrances. I have smelled two Antonio Alessandria fragrances Nacre and Noir Obscur there. I do admit Nacre is not my cup of tea.Noir Obscure at the other hand was really good both on paper, and on skin. Warm leather oriental I’ll gladly wear myself. I remember the boozy feel too , but Lauryn don’t even mention it. Re-read her review, just in case i missed the boozy part.
Romeo and Juliette? Maybe in a bar, with cigarettes, leather couches and a few bottles on the table 🙂
Thank you for the opportunity , and to Lauryn of course

  • I like such different, just a bit animalic , and not too juvenile fragrances . Noir Obscure
fits the bill perfectly with its cedar, incense, florals and iris combination , and slightly carnal base.
I do not know Antonio Alessandria fragrances , I was not able to find them both in the States and in UK/EU , and believe me I’ve tried .But I have a favorite fragrance created by Antonio Alessandria, as perfumer . It’s Rudis from Nobile 1942 . Underrated house, and underrated fragrance I own.

  • A wonderful review of this mysterious scent! Based on Lauryn’s words, the fragrance struck me as an olfactory storytelling scent, developing and changing through its lifespan. I am also intrigued about the fact of being more masculine-leaning fragrance, which consists of some completely unfamiliar notes and some favorite ones.
Thanks for a great article and a generous draw!

A beautiful bottle with some very dark earthy woody notes, which sounds amazing, and unlike anything I have in my collection.

I’m impressed to see that he went without the aroma chemicals! It’s interesting that he had created this for himself and was (it appears) a bit shocked by how dark it was. I tend to gravitate towards darker, deeper fragrances, and this one sounds amazing. I’m located in the US and would love to see Indigo Perfumery carry Antonio Alessandria fragrances- I’ve never tried any of his creations, and this one sounds stunning. Thanks for the post and the draw!
