 For insight into any perfume, get to know the nose! The perfumer for Amouage  Enclave is Julien Rasquinet of IFF, (the first time he has worked with the House of  Amouage)  who has spent a good deal of time in the Middle East.  I had the opportunity to interview M. Rasquinet in 2016.

He wrote, “I joined IFF (International Flavors & Fragrances) one of the leading perfume creations companies in 2014, in the Dubai creative center. I wanted an experience in the Middle East, as it is for me a great idea laboratory, a place of intuition, of excess, and it gives me the rare opportunity to talk directly to the owners of beautiful perfume brands.”  I asked M. Rasquinet about his favorite raw materials: “I keep thinking about this question! I know it sounds like a simple question! I like perfumery that has a certain richness and texture, and I believe this is doable with most of the olfactive families. I first wanted to answer: cistus-labdanum, patchouli Heart N*3 LMR, Turkish rose oil LMR and leather, but I also love green notes, gourmand or fruity, as long as they are evocative.”

M. Rasquinet was a great choice for Amouage Enclave which juxtaposes “candied mint” with the dryness of amber, woods and cardamon. In the composition M. Rasquinet uses two aroma chemicals proprietary to IFF- Amber Xtreme ™ (an amber woody ingredient that enhances fragrance performance and Saffiano (which has a sueded leather quality).-Michelyn Camen, Editor, in Chief

    Michelyn’s introduction was very informative. Getting to know the nose behind Amouage Enclave and his favorite raw material. He uses amber xtreme and saffiano making this smell unique. Sebastian keeps going back to Enclave. It grows on him. Dry amber experience with lots of candied mint and slight woody resinous touches. Just the right amount of subtleties and intensity. I am sold!

    Hmmm that saffiano compound sounds interesting! Knew that Julien would be a fan of that rose-patchouli combo as he did an exceptional job with it in my beloved Fidelis. I like that Sebastian made the distinction between dry and syrupy ambers in the review – Amber Xtreme of course being far more woody than ambery. Not a fan of the candied mint that Azzaro used in Wild Mint, but I’m interested in how Julien did it in this one. MI, USA.

    From Sebastian’s review I really liked hearing about how the fragrance drew him back in. So many of my favorite fragrances are ones which I did not love at first but fell in love with over time. From Michellyn’s introduction, I appreciate the introduction to the perfumer and the discussion on the new notes which sound very interesting.

    I was very happy to se a review of this fragrance on Sebastian’s channel. As I commented there I really love minty fragrances. They can go in many ways and can be so so good. The only bad option is toothpasty mint. Since this one is more like mint candy it is probably really good. I can’t imagine anything bad from this brand. I like cardamom and spiciness in it too. As always Sebastian has amazing reviews. I’m also glad I read the intro on this website to learn more about the perfumer Julien Rasquine and his story. You can always understand the perfume better that way. I’m from Illinois, US.

    Well, the intro was really spellbounding. I don’t think perfumers get the recognition they deserve. But, nice to see some effort put into establishing M. Rasquinet.

    On Sebastian’s review, I’m glad he differentiated the mint smell. I love the smell of mint on a fragrance, but this sounds different. I really would like to get to try this scent out. Amouage is a great house, and they definitely push boundaries… so this sounds interesting.

    I have tried mint scent from Diptyque and feel it’s quite unique for me. I like mint scent and it reminds of my mom garden. We used the mint leaf in many kind of Thai dish. However, mint that I grew up with has quite round leaf, which is different from spearmint in the western region.

    Sebastian did a very nice job in explaining the notes of the fragrance. Instead of just rattling down the notes like many reviewers, he actually compares it with something that most people will recognize (like comparing the mint in Amouage Enclave with Andes chocolate). I enjoyed Michelyn including Julien Rasquinet’s quote about the Middle East in the introduction. Having visited the UAE I agree that it truly is a “great idea laboratory” and a place of “excess.” Personally I greatly enjoy the fragrances from the Middle East or those inspired by it.

    It was a good decision for Amouage to choose Julien Rasquinet as Julien lives and works in the middle east office of IFF. This is not the first time mint has made an appearance in Amouage’s creation so it seems like that Amouage’s customers do like the mint note, encouraging the company to experiment with it again as Sebastian also makes it clear that mint plays a prominent role in Enclave. USA

    Sebastian’s Video: Very excited to see how the fresh spearmint fits into the typical oriental notes in the fragrance! Absolute sucker for anything cardamom so I’m positive I’ll love this one. Never heard of the Saffiano fragrance chemical but curious to see how that works its way in as well. Seems like amber will be quite a prominent note give the AmberExtreme and Labdanum.

    Michelyn’s Intro: Loved Julien’s piece, it was particularly interesting/inspiring how he described living and working in the middle east- a place of intuition and excess, love it! Upon reading Michelyn’s description she mentioned that the mint gives off a “candied” vibe juxtaposed with the amber and cardamom, which helps me imagine what it might smell like. Reminds me of when I chew on spearmint gum and cardamom pods at the same time, ha! The cinnamon also remind me of gum.

    The perfumers love of mint, which is a staple herb in Middle Eastern culture, is what drew me to the introduction. Mint is quite polarizing, as its longevity is almost always subpar, no matter how it’s composed in a fragrance. For Sebastian’s review, what drew me to it was how he described the mint in Enclave as reminiscent of chocolate mint (which I happen to like). I also admired how Sebastian redeemed the scent, as he states that it did not draw him in the first time and allowed it to grow on him. Everything deserves a second chance. Miami, FL

    Kismet, I applied Amouage Tribute Attar today for the first time this year. But let’s talk about Enclave. Sebastian’s video was so revealing, he didn’t go crazy over the scent yet kept returning to it. This scent seems to be built on polarities, candy vs leather and dried amber {Xtreme, which I personally call the “crack coke” of perfumery, dangerously wild that there should be laws against it). Polarity based perfumes can be initially off-putting but like that cavity you keep poking they creep up and capture your full sensate attention. I have personally been working almost exclusively on amber and amber scents for most of the last year so this really captured my attention and I would love to win a bottle and you know my zip code.

    I have two Amouage fragrances: Lilac Love and Sunshine and I always receive compliments and people ask me what I am wearing…I love their bottles, so simple, yet so perfect and elegant and the color of Enclave, wowowowoow. I tend to shy away from Amouage because of their smoky accord, I just don’t like it and I see and from Sebastian’s review, this does not have it. I hope you had a safe holiday with your immediate family and have a “raincheck” Thanksgiving later on when things normalize a bit.

    As always I enjoyed Sebastians review. Particularly how he described the mint as candied plus the spices, and the dry ambery woody base. It sounds unique and enjoyable. I liked how Michelyn’s introduction discussed the perfumer’s experience in the Middle East as well as some of the notes he enjoyed.     I am really excited for the woodsy notes in this perfume. Esp, the IFF that created artificial notes of amber wood and patchouli. I have never been a big fan of minty notes tho. That’s why I wish I win this giveaway and get to try this minty fragrance for free coz I wouldn’t spend on anything minty (neither candies nor fragrances). I have heard Luca Turin talk about amber xtreme before, he said it eas great material. I’ve never had a mint amber combo before sounds cool. That bottle os gorgeous as well! USA

    Amouage is my favorite house, and I’ve yet to smell one I wouldn’t love to own. That being said, I haven’t tried beach hut man, but always wondered how they utilize mint. Enclave, with its candied mint sounds amazing. I like Sebastian’s honesty about having to revisit certain fragrances before fully enjoying them. I was that way with interlude man, at first at odds with the oregano, now I miss it in Interlude Black Iris. I like the interview snippet from the intro that talks about the perfumer’s favorite notes. I always enjoy hearing what the creators favorite notes are, laudanum is one of mine as well. I would love to get a chance to smell what I’m sure is another great addition to the Amouage men’s line. From Idaho, USA

    Thanks for comparing with Beach Hut Man. Finally ! Several videos now but nobody else bothered. I have BHM, which has mint, and I was wondering how the spearmint of Enclave compares with it. Great job explaining Safiano and Amber extreme.
    That’s what I like about Sebastian – his update videos. It’s like you are experiencing the journey with him. Keep it up.

    My favorite Amouages are BHM, Epic Man, Portrayal Man, Opus VI and Jubilation XXV.

    We all love perfumes with certain richness and textures, it’s not just Julien Rasquinet . It was interesting to know what are his favorite notes to work with.
    Every time I’m thinking about Amouage, I’m thinking about Interlude Man . Stunning fragrance.Happy to own it , one of the best , if not the best ever created in the incense category . Finished 3 bottles during the years , and on my 4th i already made a dent on
    Enclave is new to me , but i like green and woody, slightly sweet fragrances, and big plus is the vetiver , one of my favorite notes.
    I’m drinking mint tea with a small spoon of honey at the moment, i’m certain i’ll enjoy Enclave

    Going to another country, to follow your dreams is exactly what i did when i went to Paris to fulfill my dreams of becoming classically trained Pastry Chef.
    I’m glad Julien Rasquinet did it , and also gave Enclave a candied twist.
    Fragrance sounds classy, and no doubt it’s shapeshifting fragrance like all Amouage fragrances I personally know. Such green and woody experience, now I’d like to try, and own it.
    I like both to cook and smell mint. “Mint” is a big umbrella for the whole plant family, that both smell and taste differently, but that’s a different topic.
    Because of the candy mint comparison, Enclave reminded me of me making Mint Julep Cheesecake, with real bourbon vanilla cream, and candied mint leafs .
    Jubilation XXV is a staple in my collection . Smells a bit like a mix between BlackBerry crumble traybake and BlackBerry Swirl Muffins with honey butter both with cinnamon. Can’t help it- Pastry Chef in me goes forward ‍♂️ My favorite Amouage.

    From Sebastian’s review I liked how he compared the mintiness of Enclave to the mintiness of Beach Hut Man saying Beach Hut Man is more herbal and Enclave’s mintiness is more candied. From Michelyn’s introduction I thought the short history of the perfumer and his experience in Dubai were interesting.

    I love Julien Rasquinet‘s Russian Tea so my ears perked up when Sebastian said he was the perfumer. I also received a sample of Enclave today and although it did open like Russian Tea I can definitely pick up the candied mint and the use of the amber, woods and cardamon set it apart from Russian Tea and makes Enclave a worthy companion to Russian Tea.

    Sebastian’s review of Amouage Enclave as usual gives a clear idea of what to expect from a perfume. Not sure I love the idea of gourmand candy spearmint in a perfume, but the other notes are very attractive, and it is also the balance of notes that matters.     I enjoyed hearing of Sebastian repeatedly coming back to a scent that wasn’t his favorite and of how much it grew on him over time. I’ve had several scents do this to me over my fragrance journey and it’s always so rewarding to experience that. In Michelyn’s intro, I enjoyed reading the part about Rasquinet’s desire for a Middle Eastern experience as right now I am also captivated by the perfumery there. Good luck to all 🙂

    I know Julien Rasquinet work , definitely not a one dimensional perfumer. Some of his colleagues are good, working with particular raw materials, over and over again , but if they have to create some different type of perfume , they often flop badly.
    I can vouch he’s good with green and fruity fragrances. I wonder what’s his perception of “candied mint’ 🙂

    As a woman i do love the house , but to be honest i mostly prefer men’s versions.Reflection Men > Reflection Women , Lyric Man>Lyric Women and so on.
    Own full bottles of Jubilation XXV – 100% unisex fragrance too , Journey Woman -the only one on pair with men’s version, last week finished my 10ml decant of Lilac Love , and finally bought a bottle.
    I like minty fragrances, when the mint is mixed well with other notes, like in Enclave. Thankfully there’s no toothpaste mint in it , but more refined sweeten up version.

    Enclave sounds like a wonderful fragrance. The candy mint and dry amber Sébastien mentions is intriguing. He also talks about the andes mint smell but without the chocolate so, I wonder if you would consider this a gourmand fragrance. The intro to the perfumer is interesting as it seems like the question about his favorite scent is much like asking a parent who your favorite child is. I do not own any Amouage fragrances but have decants of reflection man and beech hut man and loved both. I do enjoy the house very much and would love to add this to my collection. Thank you!

    What I liked about Michelyn’s intro was the link to her interview from 2016, which I had not read. I enjoyed reading about his scent memories from his childhood in France. For Sebastian’s review, I liked how he explained the notes of Saffiano and AmberXtreme, which were new to me. I also liked how he admitted he didn’t love the fragrance at first but kept coming back to it. It shows we need to give multiple wearings to fragrances before we write them off. I am from IL, USA for the giveaway.

    I really enjoyed hearing which raw ingredients the experts care for themselves, thank you Michelyn. Sebastian always does a great job describing the notes so I can visualize almost what the fragrance would look like and that’s always fun. Seems like a real interesting one.

    I liked reading through Michelyn’s passage because it was interesting to see the background of the perfumer and some of his creative choices/directions. Choosing to create perfumes in the Middle East for Amouage is such a fascinating way to get an idea about cultural sensibilities and incoporate and showcase them in perfumes. In addition, I liked that Michelyn mentioned the two IFF aromachemicals, which is always an interesting read.

    Sebastian’s review is great. I love that he mentions that he did not like a fragrance but kept going back to it. It’s a trait that I need to cultivate.

    We all love evocative fragrances since we’re here on Cafleurebon 🙂 I think most here have acquired taste.
    Small remark if i may , i think there’s a tiny , lost in translation mistake in the interview, most likely from Julien Rasquinet side, because there’s no such thing as “leather raw material” in perfumery.
    Perfumers either use raw materials as birch tar oil , cade essence , sytrax and labdanum , and different blends to evoke the smell of leather.
    The other way is of course the aroma chemicals like Isobutyl Quinoline and all it’s derivatives like Pyralone . Saffiano could be one of those, or something else, I don’t know.
    The name Enclave fits the fragrance very well. I remember Amouage promoting it as a fragrance, inspired by fjords of Musandam in Oman.Not every beach should be like Hawaii, fruity and smelling like a sunscreen lotion.
    The way Sebastian described it, now reminds me of wild tropical beach in jungle, green full of vegetation on lost island castaway … Even with slight sweetness , I still expect it to lean mature.
    At the moment i do own 4 Amouage fragrances – Jubilation XXV for men – the best Amouage imo , Intelude Man also known as “The Blue Beast” , Lilac Love and Blossom Love .
    I’m picky about mint fragrances, but Enclave will 100% deliver .

    I’m so curious about the peppermint smell. It all sounds so warm and invigorating and I like that Sebastian says the pink pepper and rose are not strong. Plus, I love amber. Sounds like a winner to me.

    I liked both Sebastian’s and MIchelyn’s discussion of the synthetic notes in this fragrance and how the perfumer has selected them to enhance his composition. Michelyn’s intro gave insight into Rasquinet’s enthusiasm and vision, although I would love to have heard more about exactly what he means by “richness and texture.” I was intrigued by Sebastian’s description of the fragrance as extremely dry, which is something I would find appealing. So many contemporary perfumes seem to fall back on using sweetness as a facile strategy to make them appealing. In the USA, in NC.

    I enjoyed the review by Sebastian and the introduction above that details the use of mint, vetiver and patchouli, which are some of my favorites in the world of notes. Also, I am interested to see how the Amber Xtreme plays into it as I have not smelled that before!

    From Sebastian’s review, I really enjoyed his honesty of how at first he thought that the spearmint notes just were not working that well with the other ingredients but he eventually starting liking it more and more as time went on. I honestly think a spearmint and amber type of fragrance would be very interesting to try. From Michelyn’s introduction, I really enjoyed reading that first bit on Julien Rasquinet, which familiarizes us to the fragrance even more.

    Michelyn great introduction of the perfumer M. Rasquinet learning and studying in the middle east. Sebastian had an amazing review of Enclave a spicy and minty fragrance a smoky labdanum and some unique use of aromachemicals Amber Xtreme and Saffiano which is a leather/suede note. This fragrance sounds very appealing to me. I am from Ohio, USA.

    I really like from Sebastian’s review how he took the time to explain what the saffiano note was. Hearing saffiano just instantly reminds me of the leather used by Prada. From Michelyn’s review, I really liked reading about the juxtaposition of the candied mint to the dry amber and woody scents. I thought that was really interesting. Florida, US.

    Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous!!! This scent is described so beautifully and I love that these notes are very prominent in the scent – Cardamom, Cinnamon, AmberXtreme. I have never owned an Amouage scent before. This one is now on the top of my wishlist.

    I really liked Sebastian’s video, I like all of his reviews. I really liked the way he elaborated on the light smokiness that is found in this fragrance, the light resinous smoke instead of the usual dark heavy burning smoke. I would really love to get my hands on this fragrance. I also really enjoyed reading the introduction on Julien Rasquinet and knowing who he was. I now know that he is with IFF and that this is the first time he is composing for Amouage, it just adds that much more understanding one has for the fragrance.

    I really liked the review, I recently bought a small sample of Enclave and I am loving it… I get the gourmand notes although not the mint note mentioned… I also agree on the difference between Enclave and Beach Hut which to me is much more ‘raw’, mossy and herbaceous… Finally, I love Enclave’s dry down as it stays sweet but not too much which in some cases has ruined gourmand fragrances for me.

    This review is very detail oriented. I really have to add that the whole Renaissance Collection is very desirable to me. The bottle’ shapes, the colors, the notes and all.
    Enclave with the spearmint note in it, it’s just alluring to me and that’s probably because in my country we use spearmint as the key ingredient of our most traditional cocktail, the mojito.

    Unique minty fragrance with resins, and vetiver.Well hello Enclave , why I’ve not smelled you before?
    Amouage fragrances are really unique. All i have smelled, you should never get without sampling first. Some do smell completely different on different people, when sprayed them on skin. For example both Sunshine Men , and Reflection Man are two completely different scents on me , and on my husband. Sunshine Men is a gourmand on me , but on my hubby is dry , herbal and sour .I guess i’ll have to find out myself what I’ll get from Enclave. By the way favorite Amouage is Sunshine Men.

    It was interesting to read that Julien Rasquinet considers the Middle East as a “great idea laboratory.” Sebastian’s review made me think that Enclave is very well-blended, dry fragrance (with its Amber Xtreme note). I am intrigued by fragrances that have a mint note. I used to hate anything with mint. But now that I drink mint tea instead of coffee, I have reconsidered mint as a fragrance note. Enclave, with its candy mint note, sounds like something that could grow on me, as it did on Sebastian.

    No wonder Julien Rasquinet told Michelyn he likes working with labdanum, patchouli, leather, gourmand or fruity, he mixed all above in my opinion, the best tea fragrance ever, Russian Tea . Also Dubai is unique place, everyone should visit.
    About Enclave , sophisticated fragrance, with mint and vetiver in it , of course I’d love to try it. Love minty fragrances, and just like Sebastian, and maybe most , I’m not a fan of toothpaste kind of mint. “Candied Mint” alone draws me in.
    And it’s Amouage after all, I have experience with their fragrances. Both Journey and Fate Man are the prime examples why you should never judge the book by its cover. Both are spicy, both dry , both openings are kind of harsh. I was looking for spicy fragrance, and it was not an easy task. Both are well made , you can pick up the quality right away.Hesitation was killing me, but Journey and up in my possession.

    Amouage’s new Renaissance collection seems quite interesting and it was good to hear Sebastian’s take on Enclave. I especially liked how he emphasized this fragrance’s spicy facets, it makes me wonder if there is any similarity to Memoir Man, which also has a minty note, I believe. Anyway, spicy fragrances are one of my favorite genres in the perfume world. Julien Rasquinet doesn’t seem to get much mention in the fragrance community, so I appreciated Michelyn’s cursory introduction to his work as a perfumer with IFF. Thanks so much for the chance to sniff Enclave! Oregon, US.
