Olympic Orchids NIGHT FLYER©
“Humans think of bats as elusive, mysterious, almost supernatural creatures, silently gliding through the interface between light and darkness. To experience the life of one of these night flyers, take a trip to the Cockpit Country of Jamaica, a crater-filled lunar landscape covered with lush jungle. The entrance to a cave in the hillside is shrouded day and night by a swirling fog, created when the warm air of the outside world meets the cold breath of the dark chambers beneath, with its scent of deep-reaching tree roots, moist earth, and dripping limestone walls. At dusk the bat wakes and flies on delicate, leathery wings through the stony labyrinth seeking the balmy air outside. It drinks from a stream, feasts on the wild jungle figs that grow on the hillside, and enjoys the ripe bananas and other soft fruit that grow in the cultivated clearings near the village. Fully satisfied, it makes its way back to its roost where it snuggles with its warm companions, grooms itself meticulously, and falls asleep again, lulled by the clean, sweet scent of musky fur.

“Bat”, which I originally created for Zoologist Perfumes, is the fragrance I’m most proud of, and most attached to. It’s not just because it represented my second Art and Olfaction award 2016, but because it was inspired by my decades-long study of bats, creatures that I love, respect, and worry about because of ever-increasing human threats to their survival. When Zoologist offered to purchase my proprietary formula and have it made by a third party, I declined the offer, sent every bit of Bat I had on hand to Zoologist so they could discontinue it gracefully, fully intending to re-release it right away under a new name. Enter an intense teaching schedule at the University where I’m a Professor of Psychology, designing and teaching a new course, with the term culminated by an abrupt switch to online-only instruction (not an easy task!), which now continues through June. During the past year I received many inquiries about whether I still have any Bat on hand, or whether I intend to re-release it, so when the coronavirus stay-home order came, I suddenly had enough time to generate a new stock of the original formula, design labels and have them made, and prepare to release NIGHT FLYER, aka “The Original, under my brand Olympic Orchids. Finally, it’s ready to fly!
The journey of NIGHT FLYER starts at the entrance to a cave in the hillside, shrouded by the swirling fog that is created when the warm air of the outside world meets the cold breath of the dark chambers beneath, heavy with scent of deep-reaching tree roots, moist earth, and dripping limestone walls. At dusk the bat wakes and flies on delicate, leathery wings through the stony labyrinth seeking the balmy air outside, where it drinks from a stream, feasts on wild figs, ripe bananas and juicy soft fruits. Back at its roost, it snuggles with its warm companions and falls asleep again, lulled by the clean, sweet scent of musky fur and skin that is not that different from our own.
