4160Tuesdays x CaFleurebon Dark Queen

Sarah McCartney of 4160Tuesdays is one of my favorite perfumers to work with. So, it was a no brainer to ask her to return for her third perfume collaboration for CaFleureBon’s 10th Anniversary… 4160Tuesdays Dark Queen x CaFleureBon.

We began this project about a year ago when I realized there are very few animalic perfumes that I  personally wear. I was also finishing up a book by Faith Hunter called Dark Queen, an urban fantasy series based on a character with a dual nature. Literally. The protagonist is named Jane Yellowrock and is a Cherokee Skinwalker– one of the very last, who witnessed the rape of her mother and murder of her father on the Trail of Tears when she was five years old.  As the result of accidental black magic, she shares her body with the soul of a mountain lion, Beast.

Dark Queen is Book 12 in the series (you can read the book online here) and after years of fighting against vampires she becomes the Enforcer to the Master Vampire of the City of New Orleans…and his Dark Queen. Jane is bad ass (like Sarah and sometimes like me). Her alter ego “Beast” is a predator, not for fun but to survive but also to protect Jane and those she loves.  Beast has heightened senses including her sense of smell. I also thought creating a fragrance around this theme… would give a whole new meaning to the popular perfumista term “Beast Mode”. –Michelyn Camen, Editor-in Chief

Sarah McCartney of 4160Tuesdays

White Queen and Red Queen were both inspired by Alice in Wonderland, the all-powerful queens of the chess board in a mathematical land of logic and apparent nonsense. It’s a place where I’m really happy to work; an eccentric imaginary space, one with which I have a physical connection. I found out a few years ago that the house I lived in from age 11 to 18 was built in the actual Wonderland, the former rectory garden where Alice’s grandfather lived and was so happy I cried. So far no surprises.

For Dark Queen, Michelyn  Camen wanted to take me far from this particular fantasy land into another territory, animalic but not white rabbits, dormice and mock turtles: more spirit animals, vampires, inner beasts, wolves and wildcats.

Michelyn asked me to read the book she had in mind, so I ordered it straight away, Dark Queen by Faith Hunter. Well then, this was so many miles away from my literary safe place that I almost fainted.

Dark Queen is very different from my normal perfumed playground, but I do love a challenge so I sought out and revisited materials that took me to the place we talked about in our transatlantic call; styrax and a particularly fruity oudh creation from Firmenich called out to me from the shadows. It had to belong in our Queen series, but instead of a Victorian English garden, it had to drop into the hot dark mysteries of modern New Orleans. I’ve been there, not for decades, but you never forget its feeling, so I aimed for that.

I wanted to make it smell of instinct, wild cat, courage, puma, loyalty, and magic. I don’t enjoy creating notes lists, but I know I must. It’s an animalic amber. Michelyn did not want an oudh, but you can use it without it taking over. It’s like putting rose in a woody fragrance; you use it to create richness not to take over.

Some notes then: Woods, tonka, forest fruits, wild animals, styrax, labdanum and musks.

I almost wanted to dislike it. I was telling myself, “but this isn’t me!” but it is; it’s just a part of me that I usually keep locked up in the basement. It’s a fragrance that made me dig down into areas that I didn’t want to explore. I developed it reluctantly, but I’m so glad I did.Sarah McCartney of 4160Tuesdays

I am super excited for this release and I am glad it is finally here! I have both White Queen and Red Queen and absolutely LOVE them both. They are fantastic fragrances and I could not wait to add the third queen to the mix! The description Sarah gives for Dark Queen couldn’t be more appealing… “I almost wanted to dislike it. I was telling myself, “but this isn’t me!” but it is; it’s just a part of me that I usually keep locked up in the basement. It’s a fragrance that made me dig down into areas that I didn’t want to explore. I developed it reluctantly, but I’m so glad I did”… being my favorite perfumer, this was a no-brainer for me! Please exclude me from the draw, as I have already reserved my 100mL bottle from Nir. Thank you Nir for your generosity and for giving everyone this opportunity! It is appreciated more than you know! Thank you and congratulations Michelyn, for bringing us beautiful content for the past 10 years! I am so grateful to be a part of this community and fragrance family! Thank you to all who contribute to CaFleureBon and for the people who make this such a wonderful place to be! Good luck to all! Sending love and gratitude from Delaware, US. Stay safe all!

I’ve never tried Red or White Queen, or any 4160Tuesdays fragrance, but I’ve always wanted to! The concept of the Dark Queen is very intriguing, and I’m always up for an amber.

  • Thank you and Sarah McCartney for this awesome perfume! I absolutely love it’s musky depth, truly drawing perfume. It wears incredibly well, I’m so happy that Sarah “went there” to create this beast. A perfect addition to the Queens!

  • Mmmmm… this sounds so naughty, I would love to try it! I always look forward to learning about new houses and I have never tried this one! I’m in Florida USA thanks for the opportunity!

  • Greetings from Ft Lauderdale Florida! I love love love woody fragrances. The notes that make up this fragrance…..sound soooooooo amazing and beautiful. 🙂

  • Dubaiscents says:

I haven’t tried any of the “Queen” scents but, I think all of them sound amazing! Like Sarah, this doesn’t immediately sound like my type of novel but, I do love the tie to New Orleans and the feline animal kingdom! I do love a good animatic scent and I would love to try this one! Thank you Sarah and Perfumology! I’m in the US.

  • I love this type of collaboration! I haven’t read “Dark Queen” but I appreciate creating a scent to portray a character. An olfactory cue is even more appealing than a visual in my opinion. The description of the scent as an animalic amber is very evocative and tells me it’s a fragrance for a powerful, confident person. I’ve not tried either a Red or White Queen but they sound delightful as well. Sheltering in place in MD, USA.

  • i have not tried red queen or white queen, but i MUST try dark queen. i need to try it in fact. i actually love anything “dark”: music, movies, clothing, makeup…..even though i am a very happy person. so when it is described as having a “dual nature”, i feel that this fragrance was made for me! thanks so much for this opportunity <3

  • I like the challenge Sarah McCartney took on to create this dark fragrance. It sounds amazing and I definitely want to get my nose on it. Nir is a very nice guy, I have visited him @perfumology in Philly just three week ago. His boutique is an awesome place to try exclusive nice fragrances. I would like to win the bottle of Dark Queen. I’m based in Florida.

  • Would love to win Dark Queen! A perfume inspired by bad ass characters in a dark, mysterious fictional land sounds super intriguing. I definitely want to experience what the scent of instinct, wild cat, courage, puma, loyalty, and magic is like. Have not tried any perfumes yet from 4160Tuesdays but they are now on my to sample list. Regards from the USA.

  • Thank you for introducing another fabulous creation from Sarah McCartney of 4160Tuesdays! If it purrs, I’m listening! I’d love to be the lucky one, because if it wasn’t for my dark side, I would not be the survivor that I am today. Peace and Joy! Mich USA

  • I’ll have to request the book from my library, it sounds like one i would enjoy. I also like the idea of bad ass women, and this scent seems like it would fit perfectly. thank you for another scent recommendation, AND a book read, too!! I have not tried Red Queen or White Queen, but they also sound lovely.

  • What a wonderful sounding fragrance. I haven’t tried White or Red Queen but would love to try Dark Queen. Thanks for your generosity. U. S.

  • I’d love to win Dark Queen to accompany my bottles of White Queen and Red Queen, because I haven’t met a Sarah McCartney creation that I didn’t love and because the description of this fragrance makes me want to swoon!!

  • Richard Potter says:

This queen loves animalics and has yet to explore Sarah’s oeuvre. This sounds like it’s right up my ally. And of course I adore Cafleurebon! USA

  • This sounds so amazing, it makes me excited about perfume again! I love dark animalic fragrances, even the challenging ones. I have a beloved bottle of Red Queen, it’s on my favorites shelf, and I adore pretty much everything Sarah makes! Thank you for the draw, Live in the US.

  • I would like to win the Dark Queen giveaway because the fragrance sounds amazing and unique. Definitely sounds like a must have.

  • This sounds magically feral. I haven’t really explored many animalics, and this one’s witchiness makes it sound right up my alley. I haven’t had the chance to try the Red or White Queen. I’m in the US.

  • I want to win it cause I love everything I’ve ever tried from Sarah. I unfortunately haven’t had the pleasure of trying red or white queen but would love to get some samples of them. I’m in TN.

  • 4160Tuesdays is a brand I am very intrigued by but have never had the pleasure to try. I am very drawn to Dark Queen with its forest fruits, woods, and animalic notes. I am in the USA.

  • This really is different sounding compared to the other “queens”. Sounds very bold and daring. Sarah does an amazing job, so she is the one for this challenge. I am right now wearing a 4160 Tuesday creation and Sarah is quickly becoming a favorite perfumer of mine. I have ordered a few 4160 Tuesdays from Nir, but haven’t sampled or purchased either of the Queens. His service is extraordinary! USA

  • Congrats again to everyone at Cafleurebon for your 10 year anniversary! I really like the concept behind Dark Queen and that Nichelyn really challenged Sarah. It sounds wonderful and I loved how Sarah said it is her just a part she normally keeps in the basement! I would love to win this as I’ve been desiring to branch out into some perfumes with animalics and this sounds perfect. I have not tried Red or White Queen as of yet. I do live in CT USA. Thanks to Cafleurebon, 4160 Tuesdays London, and Perfumology for this generous draw! It is very much appreciated. Hope everyone is staying safe and well.

  • Sarah says Dark Queen is quite different from her usual creations and as the name implies, it does feel more challenging than her gourmands which she specializes in. USA

  • Cats misteriose creation of nature, I’m personally love black panthers, fascineted by them. I guess I’m curious person, because I like to experience all different scents that exists in the world, so, Great Darkness, I’m ready for you! “Dark Queen”,creation of Sarah McCartney and she said:”I almost wanted to dislike it. I was telling myself, “but this isn’t me!” but it is; it’s just a part of me that I usually keep locked up in the basement. It’s a fragrance that made me dig down into areas that I didn’t want to explore. I developed it reluctantly, but I’m so glad I did. –Sarah McCartney of 4160Tuesdays”
Thank you Michelyn and Sarah for Dark Queen

  • talk about “safe place”, i don’t have any “animalic amber” in any of my fragrances, ever. so! that would be the reason to win dark queen. to shake things up. individually the notes sound great

  • Gabriel Garcia Leyva says:

    Dark animalic amber?
Sounds a bit away from the regions of Sarah, I’ve never sampled any of the queens, but I’m curious about how it develops,
    Thanks for the review

This sounds amazing! Thank you for the opportunity to win! I only recently got into 4160 Tuesdays but fell head over heels for her compositions & stories INSTANTLY. Dark Queen sounds right up my alley. I typically don’t enter giveaways but I thought why the heck not; this one speaks to me — couldn’t hurt.
Again — thank you for the opportunity & if anyone is actually reading this… SUPPORT INDEPENDENT HOUSES!! Now is the time, if ever.

  • patrick_348 says:

I’d like to win this because it sounds daring and different, and I like the idea of an oud note that is not overpowering. I have not tried either of the other Queen fragrances. In the US in NC.

  • Beth Duggan says:

I love White Queen’s complex, sophisticated, incense based gorgeousness. Red Queen is a rosy diversion on the theme that is equally gorgeous. I can’t wait to experience Dark Queen.

  • Sarah McCartney is such a great perfumer, I would love to try everything she’s made. Dark Queen sounds like it is out of my comfort zone in a good way, something to wear when I’m feeling wild.

  • This is the first time I’ve heard of this house, so I’ve never tried any of these before! I would love to give more animalic fragrances a go. They can be too strong sometimes, but perfect if it hits the sweet spot. USA

  • I have not tried any of the queens from this house. This new Dark Queen being animalic seems like a fine place to begin. If Sarah developed this reluctantly then released it, I’m interested. US

  • nikoleayala says:

I’ve been looking for a dark and mysterious fragrance to no avail for years. I’m so intrigued by Dark Queen and how the perfumer interpreted the idea of becoming something else (in this case an animal). This idea brings me back to a childhood book series I love called the City of Beasts by Isabel Allende. I was so fascinated by the idea of the main characters transforming into their spirit animals which resonates with the idea behind this perfume. Sadly, I haven’t had the opportunity of smelling any of the 4160Tuesdays’ perfumes since where I used to live(until a couple of months ago, now in Maryland!) you could only find designer fragrances. I would greatly appreciate receiving this fragrance, a dark smelling ray of sunshine in these COVID-19 times.

  • I would love to win Dark Queen because I would be honored to try the fragrance that really challenged Sarah McCartney. She is an incredible perfumer and I love so many of her fragrances. I have Tiger Tiger and Eau my Soul. I have a sample of White Queen that is beautiful! USA Stay well everyone and Thank you

  • TE Withrow says:

I do not have either White or Red Queen…this fragrance sounds like it would be a departure from the majority of flowered fragrances in my collection….and would be a pleasant change of pace. I am from Illinois US.

  • Would love to try Dark Queen as it seems such a dark, animalic, mysterious, perfume, hence also very intriguing. As the world plunges into a Covid-19 darkness of its own, borrowing from the description, we need to invoke our “Beast” alter ego not as a predator, not for fun but to survive and also to protect us. The notes (Woods, tonka, forest fruits, wild animals, styrax, labdanum and musks) seem stable, strong, earthy, exactly what we need in these times (haven’t tried the Red Queen or the White Queen, yet). Thank you Michelyn for the inspiration for this perfume and Sarah for creating it. Writing from USA.

  • Shamrock1313 says:

Dark Queen sounds like it has a terrific “naughty” vibe and that’s terrific. Would love to win & give it to the special woman in my life.

  • Michele Miller says:

I am enchanted by the description. I have not tried either Red or White Queen but I am wearing Over The Chocolate Shop today; that counts right?! I am a fan of the intertwining of stories and fragrance. The dark yet powerful story behind this speaks to me and this is why I’d love to try this fragrance (thank you to everyone for the chance to win it). I’d also like to thank you for introducing me to the book behind the fragrance as I’ll be seeking it out to read. Happy 10th Anniversary! (U.S.)

  • Amanda32828 says:

I haven’t try any perfumes for this house yet but I sure will in the near future. For what I read, Dark Queen is without a doubt a very intriguing perfume and the way is described in this article is very interesting to me. Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this draw. I’m commenting from Orlando, Fl.

  • I own Red Queen and it’s my go to happy perfume. I am definitely interested in seeing what’s locked up in the basement. I usually love animalic perfumes so I am anxiously awaiting this.

  • Camille Sheil says:

What a great history behind this fragrance! Darker than most darks, and yet full of strength….in a bottle! Lovely! I understand about not wanting to produce art that pulls on you in ways you’re not exactly comfortable with. It’s all in the process and brings out the journey of the fragrance that much more. The struggle creates its own tensions among the notes.

I haven’t tried either Red or White Queen so wouldn’t know the journey of fragrances, if they have one between them. Dark Queen sounds cold and slinky. I would like to sample that! Most intriguing! Thanks so much for this draw!

I live in New Hampshire USA!

  • Dark queen sounds very exotic, and I love big cats.. I haven’t had the opportunity to smell red or white queen. I love in NYC. Take care of each other!

  • We all can grow from looking deep into our own dark Queen. This one seems to have the synergy to be a great aid in that exploration of our own growth.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I still have not had the opportunity to try any 4160 Tuesday fragrances and I know I am sorely missing out. I need to work harder down my “to try” list. I love the inspiration for this fragrance! For some reason I find the darker style fragrances comforting, like a heavy blanket. And I’m often surprised when I try something out of my comfort zone that ultimately grows on me. This one sounds divine. I’m sometimes weary of animalic scents but they can have a way of working their magic on me. Thank you for the draw and review. I am in the US.

  • I have never tried either of the two fragrances and that’s why I would love to win. I love the concept of Dark Queen and also find it intriguing.

  • Wow. Just reading this part makes me want this scent SO much!

Dark Queen is very different from my normal perfumed playground, but I do love a challenge so I sought out and revisited materials that took me to the place we talked about in our transatlantic call; styrax and a particularly fruity oudh creation from Firmenich called out to me from the shadows. I’ve been there, not for decades, but you never forget its feeling, so I aimed for that.

Thanks for the very generous giveaway, I live in the USA.
Have both Red and White Queen and adore them!

  • So far, I have not yet tried any of Sarah McCartney’s creations, although people highly praise her fragrances. I really liked how she took up Michelyn’s challenge to push herself beyond her usual creative boundaries. Personal growth often requires such initial discomfort, but in the end it’s worth it. Dark Queen sounds so interesting in regard to both the story inspiring the fragrance and the fact that Sarah has explored some new territory in her redolent ouvre. Thanks for the chance! I’m in Oregon, US.

  • I also don’t wear many animalic perfumes, but am always on the lookout for one. This could be it! I haven’t tried other Sarah McCartney perfumes, but they are definitely on my To Do List. I live in the USA.

I wonder what Dark Queen would be? Dark and mysterious one , inspired by New Orleans. Also Sarah McCartney digged deep inside to create it , and it makes me even more curious.
From the 4160 brand i do own 30ml bottles of Eau My Soul and Silk, Lace & Chocolate.
I have smelled Red Queen, but not the White one.
    Thanks a lot.
    Cheers from VA

Great review of 4160Tuesdays Dark Queen. It is based on a series of books starting with the tragic things that happened in the trail of tears to her becoming a badass vampire slayer. The concept was to have a wearable animalic fragrance without oud in it. I would love to try this for myself because I often enjoy fragrances that walk on the wild side and are darker in nature. I have not tried the red or white queen based on alice in wonderland, but I read the reviews on them. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • NiceVULady says:

So definitely expressing the duality of the one who wears Dark Queen. I’m really liking the concept a lot. I’ve not tried Red or White Queen, but I’m feeling like I should. Loved the review. Thanks for a most generous draw. I’m in the USA

  • Fabulous! a fragrance inspired by literature with an animalic heart? Sign me up! I haven’t tried either White Queen or Red Queen, would dearly love to learn the ways of Dark Queen. I am in the US. Thank you for the fragrant adventures.

  • Vampires, inner beasts, wolves , darkness, gentle animalistic approach, feels like Dark Queen is taken straight out of Vampires Diaries 🙂
When I think about 4160 Tuesdays one particular fragrance comes to mind called ‘Over The Chocolate Shop” . One of the best gourmand fragrances , and maybe the best chocolate fragrance I’ve smelled. I get tobacco too . Super underrated one .
I don’t know both Red and White Qeen.
Thanks to Cafleurebon ,Perfumology and Sarah McCartney for the chance
    USA

  • I was introduced to 4160 Tuesdays at Perfumology. White Queen I had a chance to smell there, buying something else. Nir Guy strongly suggested I had to check it out. Beautiful hazelnut creamy and resinous gourmand .
Being a Pastry Chef I’m drawn to sweet gourmand fragrances. I can’t afford to buy each and every Sarah fragrance that I like , but from the ones I smelled most impressive were White Queen , Silk, Lace & Chocolate and Creamy Vanilla Crumble . I went back home with 11 4160 Tuesdays samples. White Queen and Silk, Lace & Chocolate I bought.
Creamy Vanilla Crumble I also wanted to buy, but even though longevity was decent, it was close to the skin one , barely noticeable. Sarah make it stronger please, I’ll be the first one to buy it.
I have smelled Red Queen too .
From Dark Queen I expect gothic fragrance for special occasions.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign . USA

What an insane line to read from a perfumer. This line is the reason that I would like to win this and give this perfume a try.

  • I am so excited for Dark Queen and I enjoyed reading about how it was inspired! I am now going to have to read this book. I love that this will be the new “beast mode” fragrance. My favorite part is: “I almost wanted to dislike it. I was telling myself, “but this isn’t me!” but it is; it’s just a part of me that I usually keep locked up in the basement. It’s a fragrance that made me dig down into areas that I didn’t want to explore. I developed it reluctantly, but I’m so glad I did.” Everything about Dark Queen sounds amazing. I really look forward to adding this fragrance and everything Sara touches is gold. Thanks for the generous giveaway and I live in the US!

  • I’ve heard about 2 queens, but have not smelled them.
Unusual inspiration to begin with , but I know I’ll smell funky in the cold spring days, if I win Dark Queen.
“Captured by Candlelight” is my hidden gem , no one knows about. One of those “I don’t want you to know what I’m wearing”.It’s a gift I received for my birthday, I don’t know the price, or if it’s even available in US .

4160 Tuesdays is a house I stumbled across unintentionally, but I’m glad I did. I admit I’m a vain man, and getting positive attention is not the main reason, but still really important one when I’m buying fragrances. If you’re like me, or know such guys and you’re looking for a present, look no further Eau My Soul both smell amazing and positive attention is there each and every time.
Dark Queen is naughty fragrance , with some sweetness to balance it. I want it because of the mysteriousness around it.
Oh the Red and White predecessors never had a chance to smell.
I’m excited for this giveaway. USA

  • I have never tried any 4160 Tuesdays and I hear such wonderful things. This line ” It’s an animalic amber. Michelyn did not want an oudh, but you can use it without it taking over. It’s like putting rose in a woody fragrance” made me want to try it. Now how could you NOT want to try that ? thanks

  • WaltherP99 says:

I have such high hopes for Dark Queen! Not because of the fragrance itself, but it’s also funny thing to read. My memory is really good (for good or bad) , and I remember last year in the Red Queen article how Sarah said how bossy Michelin is haha There was a Red Queen cartoon pointing finger. It was something like “More…”
Dark Queen is the proof of what I said above 😉
Michelyn turned Sarah’s inner Greenwood the Great into Mirkwood .
I know maybe 70% of Sarah’s creations, and I don’t think she has something in the vain of Dark Queen.
4160 Tuesdays best one is Maxed Out – collaboration with Maximilian Heusler , old-school YouTube fragrance reviewer. I do own the original Maxed Out , because like Sarah confirmed formula was changed , and the cumin was toned down significantly.
Own both White and Red Queen, White one bought from 4160 Tuesdays site while in London, and Red Queen from Nir in Perfumology.
Sarah please continue what you do, both in the fragrance world, and the extra time and effort to help the people in need. I have such high respect for you.
    Thanks
To all Cafleurebon crew and readers stay safe and healthy.
I’m stuck in the States, hopefully not for long

  • Thank you for the giveaway! I have yet to smell either red or white queen but I would love to! I would like to smell Dark Queen based on the name alone but also because I know Sarah makes excellent perfumes and I have no doubt this is another one. I’m in California.

  • I’d like to win it since it sounds very animalic with the different musky notes. Oud usually compements those notes really well, though this sounds like it’s more of a background player.
I havent tried either red or white queen
Im in the US. thanks for the draw
