This long winter of perplexity and travail cannot last forever. With the vernal equinox thousands of shades and hues of green surprise my eyes and soothe my spirit, offering respite, renewed hope – a New Year and new life.  Sarah Horowitz Parfums Shades of Green captures and distills the vibrant green world of spring, the myriad tones and olfactory textures, into a new, limited edition Banq de Parfum.

Green, the color of hope, healing, regeneration and growth, the hue of Al-Khidr, appears as countless casts and tints in our gardens, by the roadsides, in forests, seas and scrub.  There are more than enough colors and scents in the air right now to bring me joy, but I often find that I am so busy with daily life, or so worried about what could be, that I forget to notice and appreciate the nature of this “whirling circle” that surrounds us all.  Sometimes it takes the scent of a perfume, and a moment alone, to bring me back to reality, to the peace and beauty of the natural world.

My first breath of Sarah Horowitz Parfums Shades of Green focuses and centers my distracted heart on the sweet, tart refreshing elements of two favorite citrus scents – Japanese yuzu and green mandarin.  While I love each one alone, the combination brings out the best of both, the zest of the fruits, without any bitterness, tartness that is mouthwatering without too much pucker and a sweetness that satisfies sans sucre. A judicious touch of sharp green galbanum, originally from the high plateaus of Persia, adds a bit of stalk and branch, a hint of the scent of green peppers and piney woods to the fresh, bright crispness of the citrus.

At the heart of Shades of Green, the galbanum persists as a round, resinous balsam, adding verdant depth to the sheer Tunisian and African white musks that Sarah Horowitz-Thran loves so much. Shades of Green offers subtle hints of my personal vintage favorites, Guy Laroche Fidji (for the galbanum) and Annik Goutal Eau d’Hadrien (the green mandarin). The elements I adore in both of these classic beauties are presented in an original, contemporary and invigorating style in Shades of Green. After the initial bright opening, the musk and galbanum gradually move closer to the skin, staying with me all day and through the night, enlivening, refreshing and calming my spirit.

    What a great review. The description makes me want to take a bath in it…I am definitely curious now about being able to try. What particularly caught my attention was the very extensive attitudes of the variety of green notes and how she masterfully helps you to imagine how beautiful nature really is. While most people do not really appreciate how nature has provide us with all these wonderful scents, after reading the review, I hope that everyone realizes that our earth is truly majestic in it’s ability to stimulate the senses. It is also truly healing at this time when things are looking so bleak. I am reminded that if the flowers still bloom and the trees still stand tall, we need to respect this and enjoy it. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this review.

    True point about the ability of a fragrance to take you out of your distracted zone into the present, into a sensory moment. love the imagery of shades of green. Yuzu is a favorite. would love to try this. i live in CT, USA.

    I was quite excited to read that this creation is reminiscent of Guy Laroche’s Fidgi, which I owned as a young girl. I also have a soft spot on limited editions, so this would be a great one to have. I am in the USA.

    I’m still looking for a really wonderful green perfume and this sounds like a contender! I do like galbanum and green mandarin but I don’t believe I’ve ever smelled yuzu in a fragrance before. The musks sounds like a softening and calming influence. I’m from MD, USA.

    I don’t know offhand if I have anything with yuzu, but this sounds like a welcomed touch of green outdoors during this housebound period. I love galbanum in the spring. I’m in the US.

    Yuzu and green mandarin, galbanum and musk: it sounds like a four-way marriage made in heaven. I like the idea of a scent where the notes don’t get muddied by having too many of them. I am in the US, in NC.

    Green is my favorite fragrance path, and would love to try Shades of Green. I’m very curious about the citrus, because Gail says they are “not bitter” and I sometimes have issues with citrus in fragrances due to the bitterness. Thanks for the chance to win, hello from California, USA.

    This was entirely delightful! Not only is the greenery in my backyard just beginning to awaken, but green is my favorite, undying color. And I didn’t think it would happen, but “green” scents are my most favorite as well. In fact, I was talking to a friend yesterday, wondering if there would ever be a fragrance that was so pleasantly sour that it would literally make your moth water! In Shades of Green, I feel that I have found it!! Wow! This is going to be a great Spring! Thanks so much for this opportunity! I live in New Hampshire USA!

    Spring is finally upon us, no green yet where I live, but hope springs eternal in this current crisis and we know that it will come again as it always does. And after the fragrance decides to wear down, I want the musk and galbanum to “gradually move closer to the skin, staying with me all day and through the night, enlivening, refreshing and calming my spirit”.     3 words immediately appealed to me: yuzu, mandarin, galbanum. sigh. i wore & still wear eau d’hadrian. i never tire if it. i will definitely seek out shades of green—in the meantime, thank you! for the draw

    Thank you for the excellent review Gail and the wonderful images. These notes remind me a lot of the sweet limes that I would enjoy as a child growing up in the middle east – They were green, slightly bitter, juicy and had a bitter, green citrus scent that was refreshing in hot weather. This scent took me back to those times.
