Etat Libre D’Orange She Was an Anomaly Review (Daniela Andrier) 2019 +Sinnerman Draw

A deviation, a peculiarity; an anomaly is the exception that proves the rule, a malfunction in perfection. On its flipside, it is the exceptional, the eccentric, the genesis of genius. Think of the relentless Stanley Kubrick and his heartlessly visual masterpieces 2001 and A Clockwork Orange, whose images bore into your memory like stylized nightmares. Or Nina Simone, whose song “Sinnerman,” with its urgent, scrambling beat, was sung with a bestirred, fierce river of a voice unlike any other. Or consider a fragrance whose intensely personal viewpoint was created with the aid of a disembodied intelligence. This is She Was an Anomaly.

Still from 2001: A Space Odyssey 1968

The credo of misfit fragrance house Etat Libre D’Orange’s is to create “authentic, shocking and sensual … even disruptive and unlikable perfumes” that are true to the vision of founder and creative director, Etienne de Swardt. The starting point for She Was an Anomaly in Etienne de Swardt’s mind was twofold: the first was Stanley Kubrick’s breathtaking, quietly terrifying 2001, whose calm-voiced supercomputer, HAL, turns murderous through an anomaly in his programming. The perfume, he says, is meant as an “allegiance to Kubrick’s talent.”

But the name for the perfume came from an entirely different source: Nina Simone. In a recent documentary on Simone’s life, her daughter described her thus: “My mother? My mother? She was loved, she was brilliant, she was an anomaly.”

How to marry such disparate anomalies in a single fragrance was the challenge presented to Givaudan perfumer Daniela Andrier for their third fragrance (Une Amourette Roland Mouret, reviewed by Sr Editor Emeritus Robert Herrmann in 2017 and I Am Trash was created in 2018, you can read Despina’s review here ). Etienne de Swardt explained he wanted to create something that captured Kubrick’s genius, the malfunction of 2001’s artificial intelligence, Nina Simone’s darkness and vibrancy and the concept of anomaly.  Mme. Andrier had been experimenting with Givaudan’s new AI technology, Carto, and – through an apparent anomaly in the algorithm – came up with a formula with an extravagant excess of musk and iris. The result, she said was sublime. And serendipitous for M. de Swardt, since this iris-musk combination provides the luminous centerpiece to She Was An Anomaly.

Mme. Andrier, creator of the silky Prada Infusion D’Iris, bends fresh floral and woody notes around the iris-musk accord to create an incandescent skin scent that, for once, isn’t boring. In She Was an Anomaly’s early stages, the iris glows quietly like winter sun; natural-smelling, dewy, and green-tinged, as if its stalky leaves had grown into the flower it. Cedar is fleeting – right at the very top –and then flutters down softly like sawdust to the base of the fragrance. Vanilla ice melts into some warm, fluffy ambrette.

Imagery Anomaly, photo by Tammy Cantrell

There’s a cheeky, chilly dose of cucumber that puts a smile on my face because its watery verve is unexpected and rather perfect. Girlish flowers rush by indistinctly like passersby seen from the window of a moving car – a glimpse of young jasmine; perhaps lily-of-the-valley; but stripped of sweetness so that only an impression of fresh white flowers remains. In fact, everything about She Was An Anomaly feels fleeting, like it could disappear at any moment or simply fade away. But it doesn’t. Rather, the notes that flutter by initially begin subtly to ebb and flow before coalescing together in a shimmery bouquet that clings to the skin like a memory. She Was an Anomaly is not, despite its moniker, one of Etat Libre D’Orange’s shockers, like Secretions Magnifique. But, in its hushed loveliness, it is unusual amongst the bold idiosyncrasies of line. You might say it is something of an anomaly.

Notes: Iris, musk, sandalwood, cedarwood, vanilla, fresh white flowers accord, green tangerine Orpur© (a Givaudan natural ingredient), ambergris.

  • I enjoyed the references to Nina Simone and Stanley Kubrick’s most peculiar movies here. I am quite intrigued by how these notes come together into “something of an anomaly” so I am curious to try this. My favorite ELDO fragrance Putain de Palaces. I live in the USA.

  • Really nice review. The name for this fragrance is just awesome, whoever had the idea, it deserves an award. Love the notes list, love the music of Nina Simone, i need to check this one. Thanks for the draw, i’m in the EU.

  • I am imagining a soft and glittering halo that will ebb and flow on my skin throughout the day and I’m intrigued. I am in the US.

I love the references to Stanley Kubrick and in particular a 2001 Space Odyssey’s HAL. What an amazing movie and an amazing character. I am a big Kubrick fan so anything that is created in his name is something I have to try. I haven’t had the pleasure of trying anything from this house but I’d love to start here. Thanks for the opportunity. FL, USA.

I can never say no to an iris perfume… much less an interesting one as this seems! How fascinating that there is perfume AI. I had no idea. Thank you for all the details on this. I would love to smell this iris musk combination, as well as the green tangerine Orpur note. I’m excited about this one! Thank you for the review and generous draw. I’m in the USA and my fave is Bijou Romantique.

  • It never occurred to me that AI technology would be employed in perfumery, and here a glitch in the matrix has yielded something unexpected and significant.

Not very familiar with this house but the iris-musk combo sounds lovely, and I’m quite curious about the natural green tangerine.

Cheers from the US of A!

  • So interested in a fragrance that is associated with Nina Simone, she was most definitely an anomaly.

  • What’s really interesting is that almost every note seems ‘fleeting’, yet they manage to sneak back. VA, USA.

  • This house can be a little over the top but they’re keeping it interesting! That this was the result of an anomaly in the algorithm makes me wonder what the results were without the anomaly?? My favorite ELDO is Like This. I’m in the US. Thank you for the draw and the peek behind the ELDO curtain.

  • I love the sound of this fresh perfume and its unexpected pairing of two fantastic inspirations. As a Nina Simone and Kubrick fan, I’m intrigued. I’m in the US.

  • A perfume created with help of AI? Interesting! Also the fleeting characteristic of the perfume is intriguing. Thank you. Ana, Romania, Eu.

  • I love this review ,and Nina Simone, and iris! I like and wear a lot of Eldo fragrances but Rien holds my heart , with Putain de Palaces as number two.
I would be heartbroken if I did not like this one!

  • That brief was rather long, haha. And challenging. I’m not sure if I would be able to reversely get those references to the amazing Nina Simone and Kubrick, like Lauryn describes. I would love to give it a try though and be happy to win this to Germany, thanks for the draw! I have yet to find an ELdO favorite.

  • Hi, lovely review, love the dark sound of Nina’s voice and the reference to Kubrick’s movies. How these combined would bring this new scent, how could one not be intrigued. Love to try this one. Living in the EU

ELDO started with quite unique offerings and lately I started feeling that the brand was playing relatively safe, understandable to some extent as it has business elements to consider to. She Was an Anomaly seems like it is appealing yet also unique, demonstrating that ELDO is trying to find a new balance between appealing and unique compositions. My favorite from ELDO is Jasmin et Cigarette. I am in US.

  • Sounded like a very playful, modestly quirky perfume. I didn’t expect to find cucumber blended into the iris and the fleeting floral notes, especially in a fragrance with this kind of concept. Also, I imagine Nina Simone as anything but irises and soft, fresh notes. I guess that’s one of the specificities of the house of Eldo. They deliver the opposite of what you’d expect, and still it works. My favorite perfume by them is Divin enfant. I am from EU and hope to get this bottle. Thanks.

  • Intrigued by sandalwood, iris, musk notes. Favourite eldo fragrance fat electrician. Cheers from UK

  • Loved the references to Stanley kubricks movies. A house I need to explore I love musk, cedarwood and sandalwood. From UK Thanks

  • What I liked most was the mention of a wee bit of cheeky & sillyness in the fragrance.
It’s what I love most about the brand , they genuinely seem to have such a fun time making fragrances. Yet they never skimp on quality or origonality.

My favourite from them is rien intense insence.

    From the Eu

  • The review reminded me of “Annihilation” with Nathalie Portman, a place where the laws of nature do not apply, but this is about a personality to which the laws of ‘normality”‘ in the society do not apply and this is why it remained in the history. I am curious what the smells called like this represents

My favorite Eldo is Remarkable people. I also appreciate Putain des palaces. I live in EU.

  • luisquezada1 says:

It is interesting, like the notes were ok until they mention the cucumber… Which is intriguing. But the again this is Etat Libre D’Orange so “outside the box” scenario is normal.

My favorite fragrance is Fat Electrician. And I’m in Reisterstown, Maryland.

  • It’s interesting that this perfume was made with the help of AI. The notes seem right up my alley as well. And I like how the notes are described as ebbing and flowing until coming together. I have yet to try anything from ELDO but would like to, they seem to be different and creative. I am in the USA. Thanks for the draw.

  • I just listened to Nina Simone, so now I understand what her daughter meant, and also the concept behind ‘She Was an Anomaly’. Excess of iris and musk sounds absolutely brilliant for me, as Madame Andrier’s Infusions d’Iris is one of my favourites. Etat Libre d’Orange is very dear to me, i have Putain des Palaces and I tried and very much liked Divin’ Enfant. I live in EU.

  • I’m drawn in by the promise of “…an extravagant excess of musk and iris.”.
Too many favorites from the house to list. US

  • I’m really interested in this fragrance, and would love to get my nose into this.
I have not yet encountered this house and therefore have no favorites.
    Love from Germany

What an unusual backstory She Was Anomaly has . Created because of Anomaly, powdery, floral – musky , with fleeting cedar and vanilla.
Comforting and classy fragrance for sure.
Remarkable People is my favorite Etat Libre d’Orange, I should have got the 100ml bottle, instead of 50ml.
    Beautiful giveaway, thanks a lot.

  • Love the movie references with the name anomaly. This sent sounds amazing would love to win this bottle.

  • A perfume inspired by Nina Simone And Kubrick and by etat Libre d ‘orange with iris musk sounds amazing. I really would like to try this and love the name

  • Nina Simone I know of course, but never heard of Still from 2001: A Space Odyssey movie, and the director Stanley Kubrick I know by name only.
Sometimes unintentional mistakes lead to precious creations. I have a feeling same thing happened with She Was an Anomaly.
As a Pastry Chef I have to say my second best selling cake I made by mistake, mixing two different recipes.
I’ll check this unintentionally made fragrance, Lauryn review made me curious.
Fat Electrician is the best Etat Libre d’Orange. No doubt it’s unique . Combination of vetiver and the cream is done very well. On me Fat Electrician is actual gourmand, and not some semi-sweet fragrance. I mean is more sweet and eatable, than earthy and smoky.
Appreciate the review , and the giveaway campaign

  • While iris notes do now wow me, the description of iris-musk combined with fleeting cedar and vanilla ice accords makes me want to give this a try. Also intrigued by how this is an incandescent skin scent that is not boring. I have not tested any Etat Libre D’Orange before. Regards from Boston, USA.

  • VerbenaLuvvr says:

Nina Simone was a wonderful multi-talented artist, the music she left us is so full of warmth, joy, and attitude. My favorites of hers are “I Put a Spell on You” and “Since I Fell for You”. Kudos to ELDO for developing this inspired scent. My favorite from this house is “Remarkable People”, which is perfect for autumn. I live in the US and thank you for this generous draw.

  • Sounds like a beautiful cheeky concoction, just like Etat got us used to. I would be curious about the cucumber being thrown in the blend (and consequently the potentially wet iris, which is not so common in perfumery). I love Putain des Palaces and Rien from Etat. From Romania.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I love the thought of this one being an anomaly for the house in that it is not shocking. I didn’t expect that. I’m curious to learn more about Carto and it’s role here. The notes sound just beautiful and your imagery of girlish flowers rushing past made me smile. I’m drawn to everything about this one and would love to try it. It’s hard to pick just one favorite from ELDO but right now I have been loving Putain des Palaces. Thank you for the review and draw. I am in the US.

  • So beautiful review! BRAVO! ELDO always surprises with his ideas- perfume inspired by music of Nina Simone and movies of Stanley Kubrick. It will interesting to test interpretation of iris note in this perfume. from ELDO I like Marquis de Sade Attaquer le Soleil.

  • Everything! EVerything draws me to She was an Anomaly. Musk and Iris, a bit of cucumber… the whole AI aspect. Oh. how I covet this. I am in Kansas in the USA

  • Etat Libre D’Orange never ceases to amaze me with their unique releases. I’m going to listen to Sinnerman now. Thanks for another fabulous article and generous draw! USA

  • Personally i do not fall easily into marketing traps like provocative campaigns , names , slogans or bottles.I will sample “She Was an Anomaly” because of the:
    a) Notes – result intrigues me the most . Iris , vanilla , musk , tangerine i all love.
    b) I like Daniela Andrier , Tardes Carner Barcelona is a beauty .
    c) Then comes the nice job done by Lauryn Beer , her review was really good.
I do have one Etat Libre d’Orange fragrance in my collection. When i was young, my grandma was growing pumpkins, and i’m so used to pumpkin pies , cakes , soups , cheesecakes and so on.I was looking for fragrances with pumpkin accord and then blind-bought Tilda Swinton Like This , and i love it .
    Thank you for the giveaway.

  • What draws me to She was An Anomaly is this…”in its early stages, the iris glows quietly like winter sun; natural-smelling, dewy, and green-tinged, as if its stalky leaves had grown into the flower it. My favorite is Jasmin et Cigarette.
    I live in USA.

  • Any perfume that uses Nina Simone and Stanley Kubrick as reference points will definitely have some presence. I love iris and sandalwood and am intrigued by the Orpur note. My favorite ELDO is Fat Electrician. I’m in the US.

  • I love the concept of a fragrances that seems like its going to be fleeting and go away but never does. Excellent review by Lauryn as She was an Anomaly is such a beautiful and well fitting name of the fragrance after Nina Simone. Thanks for the draw. I live in CA, USA.

  • The association of the perfume concept with Nina Simone got me. I also kept thinking of the Matrix Trilogy while reading the review 🙂 I like Iris heavy perfumes and though I’d rather go gentle on the musk, I’m intrigued to try She was an Anomaly. I’ve not yet tested any Etat Libre D’Orange fragrances though planning on trying I am Trash. I’m in USA

  • I love this house; so, that attracted me right away, but I also loved the twofold story of how it got its name and inspiration. I adore Kubrick. I’m in USA. I have so many faves from this house and own a bunch of full bottles. But, my loves are Vierges et Toreros, True Lust, Rien and Attaquer Le Soleil Marquis de Sade.

  • Iris-musk is a modern day classic combination. Throw some woodyness and vanilla, and we have a winner.
“Andrier, creator of the silky Prada Infusion D’Iris, bends fresh floral and woody notes around the iris-musk accord to create an incandescent skin scent that, for once, isn’t boring.”
Well said Lauryn . Why I do not know She was an Anomaly ???
My favorite Etat Libre d’Orange – Remarkable People and You or Someone like You . Own the second one. I’m also curious about the pumpkin one Like This . Hope it’s not disconnected , because last 4 times it was not available at local boutiques.
Enjoyed the review , and thanks for the draw.

  • Bryant Worley says:

What draws me to this fragrance is everything that was stated in the review, but, especially, the extravagant excess of musk and iris. I am SO looking forward to experiencing the odoriferous and “incandescent” nature of that combination. I’ve only tried one fragrance from the line – I am Trash”, and enjoyed that. So, for now, that’s my favorite. I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • This sounds like a possible HG ! Holy skinscent, Batman! Iris and musk plus deft cucumber – brilliant! And the name is To Die For. So intrigued. I live in the USA.

  • Etat Libre d’Orange is very creative. Interesting concept for this perfume and the notes are so appealing . I have no favorite from ELDO, but I love the way how they choose the name for their creations.
    Thanks from EU.

  • I really appreciate Etienne de Swardt’s very unique ideas and inspiration- and in this time collaboration between 2 very different arts – Nina Simone songs and Kubrick’s movies. I am looking forward for testing this perfume. US

  • Thank you for this review and especially for the story behind this perfume: the use of AI in the creation process of it. I’d love to give it a try.

Thank you very much for the draw! I live in EU.

  • Congrats Lauryn – top quality review , one of your best in my opinion, and also the pictures complimenting it the right way.
My second hobby, except for perfumes is music. I am audiophile, and Nina Simone “The Platinum Collection” 3 LP set will always be on my DAP ( High resolution digital audio player) .
Going on jazz concerts and events I where I would wear She Was Anomaly. I’ll smell good, I won’t project strong like I usually do, and the smell will always remind me of Nina Simone.
I do own 2 Etat Libre d’Orange frags- 100 ml’s of You Or Someone Like (gift) and Like This – extremely underrated fragrance that always makes me happy … by far my favorite one .
I do follow Cafleurebon, Etat Libre d’Orange and Lauryn on Instagram.
    Top opportunity, thanks.

  • Birds flying high you know how I feel

    It’s a new dawn
    It’s a new day
    It’s a new life
    For me
    And I’m feeling good

Nina Simone was genius, nothing more to say. I’m pleasantly surprised there’s a fragrance inspired by her , partially at least. Calming and somehow happy fragrance is what I imagine right now.
I’ve sampled “I am trash” because of Despina Veneti take on Cafleurebon last autumn, and bought it a week after.

I love in the US, in North Carolina. I love the idea of a perfumer taking two different inspirations: Stanley Kubrick and Nina Simone, both of whom I adore, and melding them insto an olfactory whole. I have never tired an Etat Libre d’Orange fragrance, but I love how they name them!

  • why I love Lauryn’s review and the whole concept of the perfume:

Any internet post with a picture of Nina gets my immediate attention. Usually that’s a video of Mississippi Goddamn, especially these days. Have any of you seen a woman sing anything with that kind of classy, barely constrained outrage? Me either! Anomaly indeed.

I’m a big fan of data science and delighted by all the creative applications of ML and AI floating around. Recipes (chocolate chicken cake anyone), artwork, songs, etc. I’ve been waiting to see how the fragrance industry is using it and am tickled that ELDO and Givaudan are doing this playful experiment. It could have turned out so boring or just a sloppy gourmand mess. I also love that it includes a glitch! Just like HAL going bananas! Maybe that was the tangerine?

I looove Daniele Andrier’s work at Prada. The veil of scent approach helps me feel put together and elegant. Infusion d’Iris is so versatile but avoids being too basic.

And let’s talk about iris. I cannot get enough of it when they are in bloom -that icy, yeasty, sweet scent.

My face ELDO fragrance is Bendelerious, another weirdo iris. I hold my small sample tight!I

I am in the CONUS. Thanks for the draw!

  • This fragrance sounds nice. Haven’t tried many Etat Libre D’Orange Fragrances except one and I enjoy it. Remarkable People. Heard of Nina Simone before. There was a song most have sung, Feeling Good I believe. Thanks for the draw, Ca

  • I love that Nina Simone’s sometimes haunting voice was an inspo for this fragrance. I have not seen any of Kubrick’s films, but Nina was very special and an anomaly like this iris musk fragrance. I am a big fan of ELDO You or Someone Like You, I live in the USA.

This was a great read Lauryn… I love the house of Etat Libre D’Orange! I have several of their fragrances and truly enjoy them! Like This is one of my favorites… I truly enjoy the pumpkin and immortelle note in that one. I also really enjoy Someone Like You also. My dad enjoys that one so much that he took my bottle and wears it to work. Lauryn stated that a chilly dose of cucumber and vanilla ice were notes she smelled in She Was An Anomaly and they really stuck with me. They are what have been sticking with me since I read the article. I love cucumber in fragrances and the vanilla ice just sounds “cool”, ha! Thank you for the great article Lauryn and thank you to team CaFleureBon and Etat Libre D’Orange for this opportunity! I live in Delaware, US. I hope everyone has a great rest of the weekend!

Lauryn, great review of Etat Libre D’Orange She Was an Anomaly. It sounds like a beautiful floral and fruity fragrance with a nice musky base…and I am a big fan of Iris fragrances. My favorite Etat Libre D’Orange fragrance is Spice Must Flow. I am from the USA.

  • I am not a big fan of musk and iris even in light doses, also – I am afraid of the consequences of integrating the AI mind in human life, but yeah, I just have sniffed this fragrance at the shop and I really like it! It is nothing similar like they have in line, something like aura, like electromagnetic field. Really enjoyed the review, especially the photos. My favorite ELDO fragrance is Eau De Protection.
Thank you for the draw, I am from the EU.

  • My favorite perfume from Etat Libre D’Orange is Jasmin et Cigarette. Lauryn’s review is wonderful..a fabulous article. She Was an Anomaly attracts me with the unique combination of notes. I live in Romania, EU.

  • I have yet to try Etat Libre D’Orange, however I continually see great things about this house. They have some very out of the box names. The notes on this sound like my thing – I love Iris and the solid base notes of cedar vanilla and sandalwood would give this a solid base. In Canada!

  • What an interesting back story to this perfume. Love Iris, enjoyed 2001, and the images of A Clock Work Orange are certainly vivid. This sounds awesome. Thanks for the draw and great review. I’m in the USA

  • I enjoyed reading that Stanley Kubrick and Nina Simone were the inspirations for this fragrance. I am intrigued with the iris musk combination and the name “She was an anomaly.” Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!
