“Once, out of nature I shall never take

My bodily form from any natural thing, “…

But such a form as Grecian goldsmiths make

Of hammered gold and gold enameling…” – W.B. Yeats, Sailing to Byzantium

The sunshine gilds the natural world in a fantasy of radiant colors, serving up a final, delicate, ephemeral warmth before the first real chill of winter.  Every autumn, as the maple leaves glimmer and the local vineyards shimmer in rows of gold, a sharp, sweet melancholy overtakes the soul of this otherwise down to earth and very practical Capricorn. Even though the rewards of the harvest and the end of the growing season are announced in glowing terms of abundance and blessing, these halcyon days – and my happiness as well – are short lived.

DSH Perfumes Gold Leaf review

Golden Tears by Gustav Klimt

The endings of summer seem so relentless and final.  To counter what could otherwise prove to be the beginning of a dark, grieving melancholy, a special kind of potion is required – an elixir that celebrates the moment, eases the seasonal transition and soothes the spirit with a renewed sense of golden promise.  I have found welcome relief from my personal Autumnal Blues in Art and Olfaction Award Winning Dawn Spencer Hurwitz’ limited edition Heirloom Elixir No.8, DSH Perfumes Gold Leaf.  As a visual and olfactory artist, Dawn Spencer Hurwitz introduces in Gold Leaf, a scented representation of the techniques and effects of the ancient art of gilding – the application of exquisitely thin and fragile sheets of gold to painted and carved surfaces.  Dawn’s meticulous use of her new gold leaf metallic perfume accord serves to accentuate the colors of the fragrance notes with a luminous sheen. The perfumes of the season are revealed through translucent layers of shimmering scent.

On first looking into DSH Perfumes Gold Leaf (to paraphrase John Keats) I indeed find myself traveling “in the realms of gold”. An exquisite sense of craftsmanship pervades the perfume from the initial to the final breath. Opening with a compote of bright and juicy white grapes, green vine leaves and rich apricot, Gold Leaf creates an olfactory vision of vineyards and orchards ripening in the autumn sunshine. Oak wood and fig add depth and substance to the blend.  Notes of harvest and crush develop into a suggestion of the finest cognac, warmed and dripping with honeyed musk, beeswax and sandalwood.   DSH Perfumes Gold Leaf uses two very different sandalwoods, an East Indian that lends round warmth and golden color to the perfume and Australian sandalwood, sparkling with metallic accents and grounding earth tones.  A bouquet of three jasmines, roses and immortelle, features prominently at the heart of Gold Leaf, offering whispers of flowers, herbaceous hues and hay-like undertones, the breezes of vineyards and late summer gardens.   After eight hours on sunlit hillsides, smoky notes of tobacco and labdanum signal the end of the harvest season.

In DSH Perfumes Gold Leaf my fragrant experiences of autumn, the “season of mists and mellow fruitfulness” are enhanced by Dawn Spencer Hurwitz’ veil of art and artifice. Heirloom Elixir Gold Leaf is an enchanting and comforting perfume, celebrating both the beauty of the old and the promise of renewed growth and new life.

  • As usual I am thrilled to see a giveaway from one of Dawn’s limited editions. I love the idea of a fragrance containing white grape, a note that is fairly uncommon. And what a wonderful inspiration! I live in the USA.

  • fazalcheema says:

The fruit notes used in this fragrance such as grapes and apricot, indeed, justify the gold theme of the fragrance. Don’t enter me in the draw.

  • citizenkage says:

I loved the idea of a season change requiring a special kind of elixir. I love the season changes and love to match seasons with fragrances. That’s what appeals to me most about Gold Leaf. It sounds like the perfect match for Autumn. Thanks for the opportunity. FL, USA.

  • Dawn’s creativity never ends. I am definitely a fan. The notes of grapes and apricot with cognac sounds delicious! Thank you for the draw! USA

  • wallygator88 says:

Grape/Chardonnay notes seem to be the rage this season. I love the pictures in this review and the way Gail talks about the gold leaf accord.

    Love from Madison, WI, USA

  • Grapes, cognac, apricot, figs, Jasmin, rose, honey, Musk. Love to drench myself in that. Autumn is my favorite time of year, sunny days and, finally, cool nights in my desert home here in Phoenix.

  • The rich apricot and bouquet of floral notes blooming over a duo of sandalwood are enticing. USA.

  • Shamrock1313 says:

This sounds spectacular – the notes just scream sunshine, little breeze with a bite and fallen leaves.

This sounds absolutely lovely–a great representation of the color/substance as well as the season! I’ve loved all of these heirloom scents and own Sharkskin. I definitely need to try this one way or another! Gail’s description of how these various autumnal notes meld together is lovely. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • Ahhh, the scent of grapes and apricots along with all the other delectable notes that DSH had included makes me definitely want to try this. Gail’s review and choice of art work merely underscores what a treasure this fragrance must me. Thanks for a wonderful review and a great draw. I’m in the USA.

  • I loved the description related to autumn, because I love this season and “autumn” perfumes! It would be great to be able to test it! Thanks for the review!

  • What appealed to me the most was the plethora of notes in this concoction especially Rose, Tobacco and Sandalwood. Cheers from UK

  • What appealed to me the most was jasmine sambac, musk , honey and tobacco. It is a house that have yet to explore but one that intrigues me the most. Thanks from UK

  • What appeals to me most is the combination of notes and how they Blend together, so many unique and distinctive choices alone. So I’d be interested how it all comes together.

    From Ireland.

  • I love all of DSH perfumes and by the way this one sounds, I’m sure I’d love it too! Autumn, gold, gold perfumes, the notes, ….every single thing! How generous and exciting to offer this draw! Thank you so so much !! I’m in the US

  • I did buy the bottle of wild coyote and love it. Gail’s review has me thinking I would love Gold Leaf because I really want a new perfume for Fall and Dawn Spencer Hurwitz is such a great talent

  • Such a beautiful sounding and warming perfume. I know the feeling one gets when summer’s ending and the golden, copper and brick colored shroud of autumn falls upon the earth. In many forms. Leaves, fruit, sunsets. There is melancholy in that, but also poetry. Gold Leaf seems to have captured that, with its peaceful, natural but domestic vibe. It’s time for work and preparation for the coming winter, but even that can be done with a light heart and positive anticipation. Thank you, from the EU.

  • I love that this beautiful sounding bouquet is ultimately about comfort. A great concept and the accompanying Klimt makes the gold come alive. I would love to try this and live in the USA.

  • MissJanners says:

From the description, it seems like this fragrance is about everything good about autumn. I am always sad to see the last of summer, so a scent that reminds me of golden, warm moments would be welcome. I wonder what the gold leaf accord smells like, as I don’t know if gold has a smell. It is so interesting the things that inspire perfumers.

  • Bryant Worley says:

What I liked, based upon Gail’s review, is the anticipation she makes one have – “‘opening with a compote of bright and juicy white grapes, green vine leaves and rich apricot'”, to the bouquet of three jasmines, rose and immortalize, moving, finally (did she say “AFTER eight hours [longevity?!]?!”) to the tobacco and labdanum, ending the harvest season. This sounds like it’s going to smell fantasmagorical……and I want it! Maryland, USA.

  • Elizabeth T. says:

What a beautiful perfume as summer has transitioned into fall! Thank you for introducing us. I am always so impressed with the sheer variety and endless creativity of Dawn. I’m finally placing another order with her this week, thanks to all the wonderful reviews you have done here. A beautiful perfume!!! Thank you, I’m in the USA.

  • Wow, one of the limited editions, very interested in trying this one. I especially like the idea of the “the realms of gold”. Living in the EU

  • Nicoleta.Tomsa says:

I like autumn, I adore sandalwood and i love white wine (but never wore white grapes it on my skin, hehe) I would be more than happy to test this one. Regards from Romania!

  • My goodness, grape, fig AND immortelle in the same fragrance! This must be delicious. Though I love fruity scents, they can be somewhat over the top and perhaps juvenile. Gold Leaf Extrait sounds very reserved, with the perfect touch of fruity gourmand sweetness to bring the warm, woodsy notes to life. I am sorry to hear that you are afflicted by a feeling of sadness with the fall season. It is truly my favorite to cozy up in a blanket with a cup of tea and watch the birds frequent one of our feeders, plumping up for the colder weather. Carving pumpkins, roasting the seeds with a sweet-and-spicy mixture of orange and chipotle sugar. Bundling up for fall walks through the woods with my husband and taking turns stepping on the leaves that look extra crunchy 🙂

  • m.r.everything says:

Grape has been a note that I am quickly becoming more and more fond of. It is intriguing me and I have been seeking out fragrances that have this note in them. Gold Leaf is something that sounds right up my alley. It is a fall fragrance and rightfully so with the notes listed. “Notes of harvest and crush develop into a suggestion of the finest cognac, warmed and dripping with honeyed musk, beeswax and sandalwood.” This statement right here that Gail so masterfully put into this piece, is what had me sold on the fragrance! I was already interested, but this sold me! Gail’s choice of words to describe this experience within Gold Leaf was spot on and made my mouth water. I have had my eye on quite a few of Dawn’s creations and need to finally pull the trigger. She has so many, and so many that look like winners to me, I need to just take the plunge! Thank you, Gail, for beautifully describing Gold Leaf for us, and thank you to Dawn and team CaFleureBon for this amazing and very time appropriate draw! I hope everyone enjoys this autumn season! I live in Delaware, US.

  • There are so many interesting notes listed in this perfume, ranging from wine and grape vine to labdanum and cognac. sounds like a possibly accurate depiction of what a beautiful autumn could be smelling like. Thanks for the draw. From EU.

  • Thank you Gail for another wonderful review and DHS Perfumes for the giveaway. Tobacco Absolute, two different Sandalwoods, Bergamot, Immortelle, 3 different Jasmines – what’s not to love? It sounds delectable. I’m in USA

  • The association is appropriate: “gold” to two species of sandalwood. The autumn color of the leaves and the warmth of the sandal carry us into the melancholy autumn. This fragrance intrigues me.

I like how Gail’s description makes the fragrance sound fruity without being overly sweet, and adding some earth tones, cognac and hay sounds perfect. I live in the US, in North Carolina.

  • I like how this could potentially help cure post-summer blues! The scent profile also sounds very intriguing: with fruity greenish opening, fig and oak wood accords, plus woodsy and a touch of smokey tobacco…would love to give it a sniff! Thanks for organizing the draw. Regards from Boston, USA.

  • Lately I have been so drawn to Jean Pouyat Limoges with it’s alabaster porcelain and 24 carat gold edged. Gold attracts me as the irrefutable best metal and most beautiful. I love Dawn’s formulas And would love to try Gold Leaf!

  • Shannon Gaines says:

I find the idea of representing gold leaf art as a fragrance interesting. If Hurwitz truly can capture the beauty of gold leaf in a fragrance, that would have to be a most lovely fragrance. I also really like the note breakdown as described by Gail…especially her description of a fine cognac dripping with beeswax and sandalwood. Her description here really captured my attention. It almost sounds edible…yummy!

  • I just love the scented connection between the art of gilding and the structure of this perfume. What could it be more comforting and self-deep grounding for a perfume lover before the cold winter than the feeling given by such a well-balanced molecule cocktail treat?
    Austria

  • Ah! This sounds just exquisite. Two sandalwoods? What a great idea. “Translucent layers of shimmering scent”. Yes please. Kansas, USA

  • I was impressed by the analogy between the art of gliding and the multiple layers of the fragrance. I would like to smell such a richness of notes, that reminds me of a warm autumn. I live in EU, Romania.

  • Dubaiscents says:

What a perfect scent to release in the fall! I too love this season and the entire range of scents from fresh and fruity to smoky and earthy. I’m sure this is another winner by Dawn! Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • Michael Prince says:

I love the concept of DSH Perfumes Gold Leaf. Walking through a farm or orchard in the fall time of year experiencing all the fruity and floral nuances complimented by aromatic notes. It sounds beautiful for this time of year. I am from the USA.

  • Thanks to everyone for taking the time to read and comment and for entering the draw. I’m sure the winner will enjoy Gold Leaf as much as I do! Please remember to check back here on CaFleureBon for the announcement of the winner. Have a beautiful fall!

  • Great review by Gail Love the notes Sandalwood and grapes. Would love to try one day. Thanks for the giveaway. I live in USA.
