Houbigant Mon Boudoir Review (Luca Maffei) 2019 + Centennial Draw

Houbigant Mon Boudoir 2019 review

A boudoir implies an intimate space dedicated to a woman, with it’s little or big secrets safeguarded in privacy, an oasis of irrefutable femininity. By the turn of 19th century the term boudoir became a synonym for a special comfort zone in which you could pamper yourself, a space between bathroom and bedroom, later on often romanticized, eroticized and idolized. In 1919 Houbigant released a perfume named Mon Boudoir created by Master Perfumer Robert Bienaime, a chemist who relatively quickly became a famous perfumer and signed a line of fine perfumes for the house from 1912-1925. Yes, discovering various, new generation aldehydes was quite a rage back then, and Mon Boudoir was trending with success.

I remember seeing the original Mon Boudoir and other Houbigant bottles in Museu del Perfume in Barcelona, wondering – as with all other exhibits – how it affected those wearing it at the time it was created and released. I also remember smelling the revived perfume  in its earlier stage at Esxence Milan in April 2019, thinking about a 100 years’ time span between the two.

It is known that this perfume was Queen Marie’s of Romania favorite, and the original Mon Boudoir was not a light, frilly perfume: it was strong and sensual. Fit for a Queen that wasn’t a careless fairytale princess either: born as Princess Marie Alexandra Victoria of Edinburgh, known as Missy to family and friends, she attracted many admirers. Despite her father’s tears she married Crown Prince Ferdinand of Romania and became a Queen. Marie performed her royal duty by giving birth to six children but didn’t accept this to be her only function.

Missy traveled the world, worked as a nurse in a military hospital and actively engaged in politics. America’s entry in the WW I provided coverage by journals and magazines that embraced the Queen during and after her visit to USA, calling her The Soldier Queen. As Romanian historian Lucian Boia writes, Queen Marie ‘proved that a woman, while remaining feminine, could win a game normally reserved for men.’ Her boudoir photos portray Queen Marie while reading:

One hundred years later a new Houbigant Mon Boudoir is reinterpreted by super star perfumer Luca Maffei of AFM Atelier Fragranze: a modern interpretation of a place to pout (from French verb bouder, meaning to be sulky), a contemporary retreat to withdraw to and gather your inner strength or entertain chosen guests.  An invitation to create a fragrant palace boudoir of your own, an intimate capsule -be it real or imaginary- where you can be fragile and strong, charming and determined, delicious and seductive – while still winning a game.

Centennial of Houbigant Mon Boudoir 1919- 2019

Houbigant Mon Boudoir rises from my skin like a peppery, spicy strong swirl drifting above bitter green citruses at first, and from the beginning, a patchouli vibe is felt and present, not overpowering but always there, moving in shadows.  Mon Boudoir reminds me of an almost dark and empty room after a glamorous party after all the guests have left, with half-filled glasses of sweet champagne leftover and a single box containing remaining pieces of dark, spicy chocolate sitting carelessly on a table near a plush, purple colored sofa.

Houbigant Mon Boudoir by Luca Maffei

To celebrate 100 years the storied brand chose 2 x Art and Olfaction Winner Luca Maffei with his characteristic smooth moves and blendings, as well as introducing at an accord or note that shines through, somewhat unexpectedly, accentuated in a perfume: this time again, like with Bois Mystique (reviewed by Sr. Editor Robert Herrmann) but in a different context) ginger is fueling spices up and giving a ray of brightness, with under layers of almost powdery jasmine, reminding me of Autumn orange roses I recently bought – a decorative vignette in the overall composition. The bouquet of flowers is here, yet this is not a bright or a floral-leaning fragrance at all: general feeling is ambery, very smooth and warm, ideal for rainy Autumn times I’ve experienced for the past two days, together with my leopard-pattern heels and red retro-matte lipstick to chase the gray away.

As time passes some slow, an elegant and classy animalic movement is felt, taking over the rhythm and rolling in dimmed resins made of what I feel as sharper-smelling benzoin and animalic-sweet-balsamic opoponax, with the addition of vetiver just to ground the whole composition. There’s vanilla settling down toward the dry down, the kind of vanilla that reminds me of the inside handmade soft goat-leather gloves, with musky odors to be felt when wet with rain, mixed with remaining traces of ambery warm, patchouli tainted background and a layer of soft but strong woods at the bottom.

It is recorded that Queen Marie shocked officials by leading political negotiations during Paris Peace Conference 1919 – herself, moving aside all her ministers and commenting: “Never mind, you’ll all just have to get used to accepting me with the faults of my virtues.“ Bold, beautiful, elegant, charming and witty, with a matching perfume.

Times have changed but the spirit of Houbigant Mon Boudoir, now interpreted one hundred years later in a contemporary way, is still vivid and alluring.

Head notes: Bergamot, Pink Pepper, Timur Pepper; Heart notes: Geranium, Bulgarian Rose, Jasmin, Heliotrope, Iris, Ylang Ylang; Base notes: Patchouli, Sandalwood, Benzoin, Vanilla Tahiti, Ambre Gris, Musk

Disclaimer: Thankful for Mon Boudoir sent to me by Houbigant Paris – opinions, as always, are of my own.

  • I loved hearing about this extraordinary queen as well as the evolution of this perfume.nice photos also. I don’t have enough experience withHoubigant to have a favorite- I’d like to start with this one! usa

  • I wore Quelques Fleurs back in the ’80’s and I still wear it today. Thank you for the review and the fascinating history of Queen Marie! I’m in the US (sadly without a boudoir).

  • Thanks for sharing Queen Marie’s history. I enjoyed that she led political negotiations during the Paris Peace Conference. The notes sound wonderful, and I like that it’s unisex. Thanks for the draw! USA

  • I loved Elena’s history centric view of Houbigant Mon Boudoir and the very interesting Queen Marie. I know Houbigant rivaled Guerlain back in the day but the only Houbigant (descended) fragrances I’ve tried is Chantilly which is now made by Dana. I live in the US

  • Very lovely review rich with the history of the house. Houbigant Paris sounds wonderful I know my wife would enjoy this and it would smell amazing on her. USA Ohio

  • Am curious about Luca Maffei’s Mon Boudoir interpretation and look forward to smelling it.
Houbigant’s last release, Essence Rare, is stunningly beautiful and I HAD to have it in my life.
    Thank you, Cafleurebon and Houbigant.

  • Wow – enchanting on all levels. The notes, the history, the bottle…who would not love to invoke the beauty of Queen Marie. I love that the review translates that this is a perfume to “sulk in” FOR. I live in the USA. Favorite Houbigant – Vintage Chantilly, for the memories.

  • Houbigant Mon Boudoir may seem a floral fragrance at first but it has ambery feel. This review reminds me ginger note is suddenly in as I am also seeing ginger note in lot of other perfumes. Moreover, Luca Maffei is quite in demand now as he has been working with many French and Italian brands now. My fav. Houbigant is Fougere Royale. I am in US

  • It’s an awesome article, with a lot of important information regarding the unforgattable figure of queen Mary. 100 years ago, when queen Mary died, Houbigant withdrew the perfume from the market as a tribute to the queen.
I’m from Romania and reading this article felt soooo good.
Mon Boudoir shows exactly what queen Mary was: feminine, strong, powerful, beautiful….as a queen should be.
Thank you Houbigant for bringing out again, one of our great value from history.

  • This is awesome! I am from Romania and Queen Marie is one of our most beloved icons and role models, from all points of view! It is fascinating to visit the places she stayed at in Romania, like the Peles and Bran castles. To be able to smell this scent in her memory is a dream! Thank you, Elena, for the story!

  • I love Quelques Fleurs because it was a favorite of my older relatives and continues to be a favorite of mine. Mon Boudoir sounds fabulous and I can’t wait to try it. Loved the history and a simply wonderful review. Thanks for a generous draw. I’m in the USA

  • Wow, great story! And that Queen Marie sounds like she could have been my best friend. I would have been jealous of her boudoir though 🙂 I wish I had one of these rooms in my house, a cosy place to do whatever pleases you at the moment. Which brings up the question: why did we abolish this wonderful idea of a special place for woman of her own, at the perfect place (between bad and bedroom)? In this hectic life, I feel as if every woman should have such a place. But, maybe…instead of a real space, Houbigants Mon Boudoir will fullfill our needs. Thumbs up from Europe. Great review and I can not imagine that Houbigant would ever let us down (Essence rare and Quelques Fleurs Royals ar my favs)

  • I love bulgarian rose and patchouli. Luca Maffei is a perfumer that I absouletely adore. I love the romantacism and history of Houbigant. Thanks from UK

  • Lots of Luka’s perfumes are very appealing to me and I have high hope for this one. I’ve never tried anything from this niche brand and their bottles look very slick and elegant. Thanks for this review, notes are my cup of tea. It will be interesting to smell the fragrance recreation of a legend. I am in Germany

  • I am from Romania and I’m so happy to read this wonderful review, homage to a perfume and a powerful woman.
Strong and complex personality, Queen Maria was nicknamed “Mother of the Wounded” or “Queen Soldier” due to her active involvement in helping the wounded in World War I. Maybe the modern interpretation of the perfume considered also this aspect, because Elena smelled peppery, spicy strong swirl drifting above bitter green citruses at first, and from the beginning and a patchouli vibe.
Thank you, Elena, Cafleurebon and Houbigant.

  • I love iris, sandalwood and musk notes. My favourite from Houbigant is fougere royal. I loved the bit about Marie being described as a soldier queen. Cheers from UK

  • I thought Eileens review was fascinating, so in depth with history. It felt managed to both cross and meld genres so well.

My favourite from the house is fougere royal.

    From the Eu / Ireland.

  • Nicoleta.Tomsa says:

As a Romanian girl who grew up in communist-era with whispered tales about gone but never forgotten royals, I am more than interested to try this for a million and one reasons PLUS it has patchouli too! What more can one ask for? I love Quelques Fleurs Royale and I have an old, sepia memory of the bottle of Raffinee I saw and smelled sometimes in the late ’80s in my aunt’s boudoir 🙂 Thanks for the draw!

  • I really felt happy and proud, as a Romanian, to read this article which did not focus only on the fragrance, but also on its most famous wearer, Regina Maria. I think the fragrance fits the queen… powerful yet feminine, sumptuous yet gentle. Multifaceted, a mix of noble flowers, rich ambers and grounding animalics. A perfume fit for a queen, but first of all, for a woman. Thanks Elena for such a gorgeous read. The visual image of a deserted ballroom was very evocative. I only know Quelques fleurs and Quelques fleurs royale from Houbigant and I love both. I am sure Mon Boudoir would make no exception. From Romania.

  • As a vintage lover, I really enjoyed reading the history of Houbigant. I adored Quelques Fleurs l’Original back in the day, and Mon Boudoir sounds like an absolute dream. Live in the US, thank you for the draw!

  • This was a nice review to read because of the historical context provided by Elena. I’ve of course heard of Houbigant’s fougeres but I’ve never had a chance to give any of them a shot.

    Love from Madison, WI

  • I read the article with joy and pride, as I am Romanian and I live in Romania. Queen Marie is very much loved and what she did for Romania during WWI and after the war will never be forgotten. What I appreciated the most was Elena’s exhaustive historical documentation, but also her perfect understanding of Queen Marie’s nature, which is reflected in the fragrance: bold, witty and determined, yet beautiful and very charming. I am looking forward to try Mon Boudoir.
My favourite Houbigant perfume is Quelques Fleurs Royale, which I proudly own, together with Quelques Fleurs l’Original.

  • I had never heard of Queen Marie, but she sounds like someone to admire. She certainly led a full life! Luca Maffeii’s reimagining of this perfume sounds delightful. I’ve been reaching more for my patchouli scents recently and this would be a welcome addition. I live in the USA

  • redwheelbarrow says:

Thank you for this. I loved reading about Queen Marie. Houbigant Mon Boudoir sounds absolutely divine. I love all of the notes listed. I think it would be really interesting to be able to smell the original with the recreation. Thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • Boudoir-inspired fragrances are beautiful to me and this one seems to have a slightly darker quality to it. This review really highlights its decadent elegance. Quelques Fleurs, a fragrance I would describe as a carnal bouquet, is my favorite from Houbigant. I appreciate the opportunity to win. I live in the USA.

  • What a delightful review! The photographs and references to Queen Marie of Romania are so apropos. I have always loved the idea of vintage perfumes being re-imagined in modern terms, going back to basics of perfumery and adding in a modern twist. My favorite Houbigant perfume is Quelques Fleurs L’Original. I am in the US. Thank you to Cafleurebon and Houbigant Paris.

  • The Soldier Queen is my kind of lady. Amazing that I’d never heard of her. Thank you for that. A boudoir scent is such an intriguing idea. I’d love to try one out. I haven’t tried any Houbigant fragrances previously, but will seek them out now. I am in the US

  • BostonScentGuy says:

I love how Elena describes the scent as reminiscent of the room after a grand party. What an evocative way to describe the scent! It sounds glorious, retro-nouveau, and very rich. I like many of the Houbigant scents both past and present, from Fougere Royale (original better than the too sharp revision) to Iris de Champs to Orangers en Fleur. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • I like how Elena describes the notes, which are some of my favorites in perfumes. That, coupled with the history of the fragrance, sounds quite alluring. I haven’t tried any Houbigant yet – I’m in the US

  • Sunny Chaudhary says:

First of all a big thank you to Houbigant Paris for giving this huge opportunity to win a gorgeous bottle by Houbigant Mon.

Elena’s review got me back in the time where the queen lived and how she led political negotiations during the Paris Peace Conference.

To me it seems a perfect fragrance with some amazing notes involved and would to try it.

    I am in USA

    Sunny

  • This bottle looks wonderful! And the scent sounds amazing as well. I have never tried anything from this brand. Thank you for the chance. I live in the EU.

  • As far as i can remember Houbigant was gone for good for a long period of time , and revived a few years back.I know Fougere Royale , but nothing else. They do not smell the same, but Fougere Royale gives me the same vibe like Antidote by Viktor&Rolf .
Cozy pleasant scent for close encounters, that’s how I feel about about Mon Boudoir .
Fougere Royal is really good, but as I said it’s the only Houbigant I know.
    Thanks a lot. USA

  • “Never mind, you’ll all just have to get used to accepting me with the faults of my virtues.“ what a mood to live by! It’s raining here in my city, and just reading about boudoirs and history, and imagining balsamic bouquets and woods is so soothing…I’ve not tried any Houbigant fragrances but would love to experience this one. (usa)

  • I’ve never bought a Houbigant but I can almost smell the warmth and coziness of patchouli and Tahitian vanilla. VA, USA.

  • I love the story of Queen Marie, she sounds like a very strong woman! This scent sounds so lovely, especially the dry down with the musky vanilla mixed with patchouli. Thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • Thank you for the wonderful review and generous giveaway. My current favorites from Houbigant are Chantilly and Indian Summer. I appreciate the tweaking of formulas so old. It keeps the homage to earlier perfumery while bringing the scent into the 21st century. California, USA.

  • As a romanian I’m very eager to try this one out, given the fact that Mon Boudoir was the favorite perfume of Queen Marie. I loved how Elena described the scent and gave us a little piece of history. I`m in EU.

  • What a wonderful review by Elena filled with great history too. I own Bois Mystique and quelque fleurs so I would love to own this too. Luca Maffei is a good perfumer so that makes it even more exciting.

  • ScentitarFragrance says:

I loved that this article described the stages of the fragrance of the fragrance. Talking about each stage and even accords compared to a memory of place helps us imagine the fragrance. It truly sounds gorgeous, woody, floral and decadent ! I have never tried a houbigant fragrance and I live in the usa, ms !

  • I enjoyed reading about this important personality. It will also be nice to smell this perfume…as ages went by, I assume its contours changed, but its essence is still the same. By the notes, it should be a classy and classic perfume. Thanks. From EU.

  • I’m really excited and curios about this fragrance. This is a fragrace made for strong and feminin women. Thanks for the draw!
    I’m from Romania

  • I love the idea of a boudoir, creating it as a place for both solitary escape and escape with a companion (or two….). Resins, amber, benzoin, vanilla, balsam, musk: these all belong in any boudoir I can imagine. Elena’s sensuous review captivated me.
I haven’t tried anything from Houbigant.
    I live in the USA.

  • What a lovely review of both the history of the fragrance and one of the Queen’s that used it. It sounds lovely, truly fitting for a queen! The only Houbigant I have is Quelques Fleurs, which is lovely. I live in the USA. Thanks!

  • Queen Marie sounds like an amazing woman. I would love to try the fragrance she loved. It sounds beautiful. Thank. You for the chance to try. USA

  • Thanks for an amazing review, Elena! I love the story of Queen Marie and I’m happy that after a century, we’ll be able to experience an interpretation of the Queen’s favorite fragrance. This part of your description is what I love the most- ‘-be it real or imaginary- where you can be fragile and strong, charming and determined, delicious and seductive – while still winning a game.’ My favorite Houbigant is Oranges en Fleurs. Thanks for this opportunity. – CA, USA

  • When I wear a fragrance with florals in it, like this one I prefer those that are understated and in the background. This one with vanilla and sandalwood in the forefront seems like a great one that will satisfy the masses. I look forward to trying it out. Thanks for the draw. From USA.

  • I am extremely excited about this article, beautifully rendered and complex. Queen Maria was an iron hand in a velvet glove. It definitely smelled divine when wearing this perfume. An extremely beautiful and rich item. And the bottle is a jewel.Proude to be from Romania.

  • I’m a barber, and I know Houbigant for their fougeres, especially Fougere Royale , Rodrigo Flores-Roux masterful creation. If you’re into old school fougeres, trying it is a must.
I like floral fragrances, if they’re not carnal. Balsamic and vanillic base in Mon Boudoir is intriguing .
Fougere Royal of course is my favorite Houbigant. 2 days ago was my scent of the day.
    Thank you Elena, fingers crossed.
    USA

  • I thought the review made the fragrance sound reminiscent of classic floral chypres. Floral, animalic, complex and dense. Quite french in style.
Im in IL in the US. My fav from the house is fougere royale. Thanks for the draw

  • Queen Marie was intelligent and beautifull, feminine and brave, determinate and daring, glamourous and humble also, very modern and very romantic in the same time. I would love to see if the new formula embodies in some way her dazzling personality! I liked Elena’s review becouse it shared so many refferences to the Queen, wich i just love and admire and i’ve allways wondered why she chose Mon Boudoir as her perfume, what attracted her at that formula. I have a bottle of Raffinee by Houbigant, wich i love. I live in Romania.

  • I’m not usually one to get caught up too much in packaging (I mainly care about the quality of the juice) but this bottle is so beautiful! Though my perhaps laughably tiny house has no feasible space for a boudoir, this little treasure would certainly help me to pretend that it does! Isn’t that what fragrance is all about, creating fantasy worlds to which one can escape from the humdrum monotony of daily life? I enjoyed the history lesson contained in this review as well.
Sadly, I have yet to try any offerings from Houbigant, but this would be an incredible introduction to the line! Thank you.
    USA

  • I enjoyed reading Elena’s review especially where she gave a brief history of Queen Marie. I love that this one is both a strong and sensual fragrance, and unisex. I love fougere royal.
    I live in USA.

  • Hey I didn’t know Houbigant had high end line. The inspiration behind Mon Boudoir was a pleasure to read.
Mostly ambery, warm fragrance with patchouli and rose is exactly what I need for the autumn.
My husband owns Cologne Intense, masculine fragrance for confident guys. It’s not for boys, but for grown up men.
    Wonderful draw.
Back and forth between USA and Scotland, 1 week in US -> 1 week in Scotland, and so on . Basically both USA and EU/UK at the same time

  • Michael Prince says:

Elena, great review of Houbigant Mon Boudoir. It sounds like a great 100 year recreation of a classic fragrance. It has light floral bouquet touches with the amber, patchouli, benzoin, and vanilla base. I don’t have a favorite Houbigant fragrance because I haven’t tried any. I am from the USA.

  • I was born in R. of Moldova, which during the turbulent history of the XXth century managed to be part of various countries until it finally claimed its independence in 1991. My grandfather was a child of the interbelic period and with the primary education received when the territory between two rivers called also Bessarabia was part of Romania. He always spoke of Romanian regal family with respect and loyalty. This is how I first heard about queen Maria and her children. As a child in 80s in USSR, I could not imagine she would have a perfume and even more what it would smell like. In USSR the choice of perfumes was a rather limited one and only years later after I accidentally came across a bottle of Houbigant Quelques Fleurs Royales I had an impression what a classical fragrance might smell like. And now, still, in 2019, after smelling so many fragrances I am still curious to find out how a royal fragrance would smell like. I live in EU.

  • Ambery and warm , resins, some natural smelling flowers and vanilla. No doubt Elena is right, Mon Boudoir sounds like a fragrance made for gloomy fall days. I have no experience with Houbigant , but
Luca Maffei is really good perfumer, so I’m sure he did a great job.
    Thank you. USA

  • Queen Marie of Romania was the image of Houbigant till 1938, when she died. Mon Boudoir was created for her and discontinued at that time too. Recreating / reinterpreting this perfume 100 years later coincidently (or not) with the 100 years from the 1919 Paris Peace Conference where Queen Marie had a crucial role is remarkable. Elena’s review manages to portrait the grace and courage of Queen Marie and the blending of the Boudoir notes. I live in Romania. I don’t have a favourite Houbigant fragrance … yet. Thanks for the opportunity! Oana

  • Very interesting to hear about the history of Queen Marie. Another beatiful review. I have only sampled Houbiants Fougere Royale and it is one of the most beatiful fougeres I have smelled. Thank you for the opportunity to win a bottle!
    Greetings from Austria (EU)

  • I admit when I saw jasmine in the notes I felt shivers down my spine. Good to know Mon Boudoir is not indolic , but cozy amber, with vanilla and woods.
“Bois Mystique” is in my possession. I’m not sure how Luca Maffei did it, but it smells way more expensive than it’s pricetag. Ok I’ll say it, smells like a Creed fragrance. If I have to describe it it will be like a mix between Spice and Wood , and Royal Oud.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign. In US.

  • This quote created such a vivid picture in my imagination – “There’s vanilla settling down toward the dry down, the kind of vanilla that reminds me of the inside handmade soft goat-leather gloves, with musky odors to be felt when wet with rain, mixed with remaining traces of ambery warm, patchouli tainted background and a layer of soft but strong woods at the bottom.” The fragrance sounds quite lovely. I don’t have a favorite Houbigant fragrance. In fact, it’s been years that I’ve smelled on. My only experience with Houbigant was years ago with Chantilly.
    I live in the USA.

  • I liked the way the review incorporated elements from the past and present to highlight the special occasion of this fragrance. Quelques Fleurs is my favorite from Houbigant. I live in the USA.

  • This read really well, and the bottle looks as if it were a queens jewel; love it. Hope to get my nose into this.
    Love from Germany

  • Excellent review by Elena and I enjoyed reading about the extraordinary Queen Marie and her efforts! She is a very strong and amazing woman. I have worn Apercu, Quelques Fleurs, and Quelques Fleurs Royale. I am looking forward to trying the modern version of Mon Boudoir. Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!

  • Elena’s review was enlightening with historical context and this fragrance sounds intoxicating. It’s interesting that Mon Boudoir was chosen as a signature scent by a strong-willed loyal lady. My favorite Houbigant fragrance is Cologne Intense. I’m in USA

  • I always thought of Houbigant as mature, classy men fragrance house. For a reason I believe. When I think about Houbigant I think about Duc Vervins and Fougere Royal. I grew up with Duc Vervins , because of my dad and grandfather .
I presume with the new “niche” line and working with young, but already established perfumer like Luca Maffei, Houbigant wanted to reach younger generations.
I like florals, but not overbearing ones. Warm, smooth and ambery, garnished with vanilla floral I’m most interested in.
Duc de Vervins is my favorite one .
    Nice opportunity, thank you .
USA most of the year, and Germany from time to time

  • Excellent review and the great information on the Queen and the creation of the fragrance. I have yet to smell Houbigant has to offer but I am surely interested. Thanks for the draw. I live in the USA.
