Ormonde Jayne Qi Parfum Review + Breath of Life Draw

Ormonde Jayne Qi Parfum and A painting by Qiu Ying of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) womenofchina.cn

Summer looms – lugging considerable humidity in its wake, a feeble sea breeze if one is fortunate enough and abundant warmth (that’s a euphemism). I pity the land-locked, earnestly hoping that they encounter lakes, rivers or creeks in which to soothe their beleaguered corporeal selves and find some refreshment. Whether at labor or leisure, Ormonde Jayne Qi Parfum provides that “breath of life” in a very tangible olfactory sense.

Best tea Perfumes

Court ladies playing instruments and drinking tea – Tang dynasty LiveJournal

One of the beauties of fragrance is instantaneous travel: our limbic system transports us wordlessly in a nanosecond without any help whatsoever. Qi’s destination is a meditative one; it’s respite in a flacon. Thanks to perfumer Geza Schoen,  in collaboration with Creative Director Linda Pilkington – we’re treated to one of the most wearable citrus tea fragrances in parfum concentration. It’s long-lasting and bestows aromatic reprieve during summer’s sultry months. I adore tea-themed scents, especially in summertime; nothing else manages to fuse limpidity, revitalization, and a sense of profound bien-être quite the way they can. The observation that no one ever seems to dislike them is a big plus, and I’m including a significant variety of cultures, age groupings, socio-economic factors. Since I’m notoriously sneaky about perfuming myself round the clock – including the workplace where discretion is de rigueur – it becomes challenging, to say the least.  In Ormonde Jayne Qi Parfum, I’ve uncovered a solution which both pleases me and fosters a tranquil atmosphere.

Four corners of the Earth Ormonde Jayne Qi

Lai Bai via wiki

I love the image of romantic (and decadent) 8th C. Chinese poet Li Bai awakening from peaceful slumber: this is how we’d like to imagine ourselves as the climate heats up. A cool cup or glass of tea (my Russian forebears were associated more often with the latter!) awaits us. This tea sings of yerba mate (a native Paraguayan plant with the strength of coffee, a powerful stimulant full of polyphenols) in all its herbal greenery: haylike, woody, balsamic; some absolutes smell of dried fruit, a puff of tobacco. Every mate fragrance I’ve encountered seems tailor-made for citrus accompaniment. In Qi’s case the loveliness of neroli and lemon blossom provide floral and juicy aspects which counterbalance the astringency of tea. Freesia is likely an accord/aromachemical (there are quite a few) which offers an airy floral aspect and in combination with hedione – an undeniable radiance and lift. Violet and rose whisper; it is osmanthus which garners most notice, at once leathery and dripping apricot-scented juice. It’s simply perfect with all the tea nuances.  The base of  base is tenderly musky with a touch of ink (moss) and the vanillic/cinnamon-tinged tone of benzoin, barely perceptible in the drydown

Notes: green lemon blossom, neroli, freesia, tea notes, osmanthus, violet, hedione, rose, mate, benzoin, musk, moss

Thank you, Europerfumes – for my lovely  tester bottle of Ormonde Jayne Qi Parfum It’s delightful. My nose is my own…

I agree with Ms. Ida, now that it is summer, it is time to break out the tea themed fragrances. I have several tea/citrus combo scents in my collection, my current favorite is Carthusia Mediterraneo. Nothing quite beats the heat like a tall cool glass of iced tea and a restrained tea scent on the skin. Thank you for the draw, I live in the US.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

I love Ida’s comments on how scent is evocative of place and time, and is a way to “travel” in and of itself. I also appreciate her pointing out structurally what mate pairs well with, and the way she describes the unfolding supporting floral notes in this scent. I know and love Qi well, and feel Ida described it wonderfully. Qi’s persistence and balance of agreeableness with distinct character appeals to me a lot. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • Shelly Wolf says:

Green lemon blossoming the notes is interesting. And I love violet and tea. Seems like the ones I have tried from this line are very appealing to my senses.

  • A tea-centric fragrance in long-lasting Parfums concentration? Sounds wonderful and solves the inherent problem, as far as I have experienced, of tea scents abysmal staying power. I’d love to try this and it would be my first Ormonde Jayne perfume. Thanks to all for this draw. I am in the US.

  • fazalcheema says:

In Qi, lemon and neroli counterbalance the astringy aspects of tea and floral notes add an airy aura. My favorite from Ormonde Jayne is Nawab of Oudh. I am in US

  • I love how Ida describes the transportive effect of perfume in her review. Although I haven’t traveled much, when I experience certain fragrances I inhale, close my eyes and my imagination takes me to many foreign destinations. I live in the beautiful USA.

  • Lillyhollowayblog says:

Tea is my favorite summer fragrance note. Citrusy and floral tea. Ida’s description is (as always) so lush and delicious. US resident.

  • I love Ormonde and tea centric fragrances when it’s hot
I have woman and taif as well as the Ambre royale but always wanted to try one of the four corners of the earth… especially Nawab de Aoud
    Beautiful review and pictures

  • Tea and lemon and neroli! Sounds absolutely beautiful and of course if Ida likes it you know it is. Thank you for the Asian Journey and chance to try. USA

  • Awesome notes list, it sounds really good, would love to try it, the tea note is one of my favourite. Great description, thanks for the draw.

Every Ormonde Jayne perfume is a special treat. As an avid tea drinker… I’d hesitate to say connoisseur… I’d love to experience Qi. Ormonde Jayne perfumes, in my experience, tend to be multi-faceted, layered experiences, and Ida’s review suggests that Qi also meanders gracefully between accords. Every stop along the way sounds refreshing, from the citrus to the mate and osmanthus. I hope to try this perfume soon, but in the meantime I’ll make do with some other favorite summer fragrances and steep up some oolong tea to savor. I’m in the USA and would love a chance to win, thanks for the dreamy review and generous drawing.

  • Bubeto_GG says:

Yerba mate + neroli and lemon blossom and some peachy vibe coming from osmanthus . Well Qi sure sounds nice.
Usually i wear my tea fragrances is the spring , or autumn . In a colder summer night sure , but not in a high heat.
As for Ormonde Jayne fragrances -i had Tolu back in late 2014 -it was a gift from mom , but unfortunately for a short period of time , because my younger cousin broke the bottle – dropped it from the second floor of the house.Barely used like .. ~10ml of this gem…max before this happen. Her being 16 back then was the thing that saved fer from my fists.
Every time i think about Ormonde Jayne i get this incident in my mind 🙁
Thank you Ida and Europerfumes .

Somehow this one was not on my radar… how is that possible? It seems perfect for summer. I’m still looking for that perfect tea fragrance… one with osmanthus in it could very well be it! Osmanthus is one of my favorite notes. Ida, thank you for this great review and for introducing me to this one!

  • I’m definitely interested in trying this flowery tea fragrance. I’m imagining sipping tea with a tiny violet floating within. Thanks for the beautiful article Ms Ida. USA

  • Ida’s review makes Qi sound like the perfect summer fragrance. I drink tea year round, but I crave tea scents in warm weather, along with osmanthus, citrus and other floral notes. Tsarina has been one of my favorite Ormonde Jayne fragrances for a while now. I would love to add another bottle from the Four Corners collection to my perfume cabinet.

  • Great review. I love ormonde janye and this one sounds no different. I enjoy tea scents and like that this one can be used in summer when i tend to find less options for my taste. I also love neroli so thats a plus with this one. Thanks for the draw.

  • “One of the beauties of fragrance is instantaneous travel: our limbic system transports us wordlessly in a nanosecond without any help whatsoever.” This sums up what I appeals to me about fragrance, and tea scents are so freshing and make you feel like your sitting on a beach chair with the ocean breeze wafting pass you enjoying a cup of iced tea. This is a great review and the notes sound perfect for summer, I live in the USA!

  • Teas are in a league of their own when it comes to class in perfumery. With Geza’s touch, I am ready to embark on a first-class fragrant flight.

  • tuiu silver says:

Ida did a great job on this one, as expected haha.
The way Ida described the floral, with airy and hedione nuances backing up a fresh and juicy aspect that makes a beautiful contrast with the tea note… This sound just mesmerizing to me.
The way Ida associate scents with specific scenarios is really assertive and set the mood beautifully.
I would like to join the giveaway please.

  • This sounds like a perfect antidote for the desert heat here in southern Nevada. We have been blessed with slightly cooler temps (blessed in that temps haven’t made it past 107 yet) but a “breath of life” would be absolutely welcome!

  • Alfredo D. Teutla says:

The balance of citrus and tea sound amazing. Love this quote: “we’re treated to one of the most wearable citrus tea fragrances in parfum concentration.”

  • Thank you Ida for another glowing tribute, lovely imagery and for the kind giveaway. I’m a big fan of tea but have not yet tried a tea fragrance and this one sounds like a good springboard. I’m in TX USA

  • Tea done well is a great note in perfume. The description of Qi reads like it’s a complex evolving fragrance. I have enjoyed trying many from this line and look forward to Qi. US

  • As always great review, Ida! Thanks!
I choose fragrance for the summer very hardly, but Ida’s conclusion: “one of the most wearable citrus tea fragrances in parfum concentration”- intrigued me.
I like Ormond Jane perfumes, especially Ormond Man.

Qi is a very divided fragrance of the popular fragrance forums. People either love it or really hate it. This review was really in depth on what is appealing about Qi so now my curiosity is piqued. It sounds very balanced and nuanced, so at the very least, I’d appreciate the artistry. Cheers from the USA.

  • I have great admiration for both Linda Pilkington and Geza Schoen this Series sounds like the answer to a wanderlust without leaving the comfort of my zone. I too love a fragrance that pleases me and creates a cohesive, lenient atmosphere. Lovely read Ida as always. Thanks to Europerfumes for supplying the lovely draw. I am in the US

I was so happy to read about this tea fragrance, which sounds perfect for the summer. The freesia accord, along with the whispered rose and violet make this especially attractive to me. Thank you for the opportunity to win! I live in the USA.

I’m such a huge fan of Linda Pilkington for her “no reformulations” kind of policy .
I know both Qi versions – “regular” Qi and Qi Intensivo . I am a fragrance lover and collector for almost 25 years , and Cafleurebon subscriber since early 2015 . The is only the second time i do agree with miss Ida Meister review. Usually we’re ot totally different page about fragrances we both know. If she thinks A , i think Z .
Qi Intensivo is more intense and fuller version of the regular Qi.Performs better , especially the longevity. Only 50ml bottles are availble available through.Pick your poison.
The Intensivo version in US is available at Luckyscent.
I do own Frangipani Made to Measure in 50% concentation in custom bottle , and i feel like i own a bespoke perfume.Pure parfum versions they called Made to Measure.Unfortunately US customers can not get cream della cream of the brand….for now at least. It’s about time .Europerfumes and Ormonde Jayne – pls make it happen….finally. Please?
Thank you Europerfumes , and CaFleurebon for this draw , and miss Ida for the nice reviews.

  • I love so much of Geza Schoen’s work for Ormonde Jayne and would love the opportunity to try this scent. The description makes it sound both soothing yet invigorating, if that’s possible!

  • NiceVULady says:

” Qi’s destination is a meditative one; it’s respite in a flacon. ” That one sentence sold me on this fragrance. I love tea fragrances and this one sounds , by way of Ida, beautiful. Thank you for a wonderful review and a most generous draw. I’m in the USA

  • I’d love to try this fragrance. I don’t anything tea-predominant, and would appreciate experiencing this particularly gorgeous-sounding one this summer. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • I love that it’s a citrus tea fragrance in parfum concentration and that it’s a long lasting fragrance. I love the images incorporated in the review.
    I live in USA.

  • “I adore tea-themed scents, especially in summertime”
I too adore tea scents, but mostly for the spring. I rarely drink tea , and wear tea fragrances in the summer.
I had a chance to smell some Ormonde Jayne fragrances, and I have to say that there is one that blew me away. It’s called Tolu . What a gorgeous scent. I will get it for the winter months.
Qi I do not know, but juicy tea scent with floral and citrusy aspects I’ll gladly add to my collection.
    Thanks Ida

I love a good tea fragrance. What is it about the scent of tea that is always so soothing? This sounds like a beautiful combo of notes and I am intrigued by the addition of tobacco. Thank you for the draw. I am in the US.

  • Tea fragrances are so lovely! This one has such a complex mix of notes. I love the neroli and orange blossom opening. But then you have that pretty, powdery violet note in the middle. The drydown sounds gorgeous with that earthy and spicy drydown. I’ve never tried fragrances from Ormonde Jayne before so I’d be really interested in trying Breath of Life as my first!
    I live in the US.

  • I love the idea of citrus tea in a perfume concentration, yet that Ida can still get away with this one at work. Subtlety and discretion in one bottle, it seems. Thanks for the review.

  • What appeals to me about Ida’s review of Ormonde Jayne Qi is the fact that she said it immediately transports you and its a meditative destination. Citrus Tea fragrance sounds so sublime. I live in CA, USA.

  • A citrus tea fragrance will be nice for the warm summer days. Still need to explore the House of Ormonde Jayne. Would love to try this, thanks US

Neroli, lemon blossom, and tea – that’s a recipe for the perfect summer scent. I love Tsarina, and I’m sure Qi is just as beautiful! Thank you for the draw, live in the US.

  • I’ve never owned a tea fragrance. This sounds refreshing. I liked the description of Qi having “radiance and lift.” I also see in the note list that it has osmanthus, which I love. Thank you Ida for another educational review. In the USA.

  • Oh, this sounds great for summer, especially the tea and citrus, and the inspiration of Li Bai. In the us, thank you for a lovely review and the draw!

  • Excellent review by Ida and I love the fact that she mentioned fragrance and instantaneous travel! I also love the fact that Qi is a long lasting tea fragrance. My favorite line was: “Qi’s destination is a meditative one; it’s respite in a flacon” and it won me over. Thanks for the generous giveaway and I live in the US!

  • One of the most wearable citrus tea fragrances in Parfum concentration.”
    Big statement to make .
I grew up in UK , and I’m used to drinking tea every day, so Qi picked up my interest.
Yerba Mate I like to drink once, or twice a week. I’m not drinking it more often because it lowers blood pressure, and mine is low to begin with.
I also agree with Ida description of how this tea smells – right on point.
A small note if I may – both my girlfriend and my mom do not like tea fragrances, so ” no one ever seems to dislike them” does not apply to all close to me.
    Thank you all

Ida, this is incredibly relatable in so many ways. Even in the worst heat of the summer I remind myself how fortunate I am to be near so many rivers, lakes, and the ocean. As a big fan of tea fragrances in general but especially for warmer weather, I’m thrilled to know that Qi is workplace-friendly, since I just don’t feel right if I’m without fragrance in most any situation. It sounds delightfully well balanced, with the mate and osmanthus complementing the neroli and lemon blossom without ever overpowering. Of the Four Corners collection, Qi and Montabaco sound the best by far! I am in the US 🙂

  • doveskylark says:

I also believe that the beauty of fragrance is instantaneous travel. This summer as I am working hard in the city, I’d love to sneak this one on and be transported to a tranquil place where I am lounging, sipping refreshing citrus teas.

I have a four corner’s sampler and love all of the scents. Qi is a lovely soft oriental with the district tea note. I’d love a full bottle. I also work with someone named Qi and want to bring him a sample. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • Lorie McMillin says:

I have a sampler of the four corners. All are beautiful including Qi, which is such a lovely soft oriental tea fragrance. I’d love a full bottle! I’m in the US

  • Personally I think if it’s tea fragrance with a lot of green notes and citruses , yes you can wear in in the summer, but if the fragrance is more herbal I prefer to wear it in the spring.
Qi I’ve never smelled before , but a few years back I was working for one of the biggest US based all organic tea company super popular on Amazon too, and I know well the smell of the real Yerba Mate tea. For the most part I do agree with Ida Meister about how it smells . If Qi really smells like Yerba Mate I’ll gladly wear it in all other seasons , except summer. I don’t think it will be appropriate for the hot weather outside, but it will be perfect for the spring.
    Beautiful draw thank you

Ida, great review of Ormonde Jayne Qi Parfum. I would love to have a long lasting citrus and tea fragrance in my collection that is fresh and can be utilized in the summer. You get that with this fragrance since it is a parfum concentration.

  • Lovely to hear from everyone!
Obviously, no one perfume appeals to everybody, nor do I expect that we’ll all agree on what we like and when to wear it. That’s part of the fun.
    Good luck to all !
