Nishane is the first Istanbul-based perfumery (established in 2012) and from their debut at Esxence 2015, they have been a personal favorite brand for me. I might have been the first journalist to discover Creative Directors Murat Kutran and Mert Guzel in their small booth and we have stayed in constant contact throughout the years.

There are so many Nishane perfumes I love, but this year’s Esxence 2019 debut fragrances, is, I believe their strongest showing to date. Nishane ANI was certainly a standout.

Nishane engaged French-Armenian perfumer extraordinaire Cecile Zarokian (she was my choice to lead off our Young Perfumers Series April 2014), for ANI from the No Boundaries collection and it was one of the standouts of the exhibition for Ida, Ermano and Sebastian, who is Armenian-American. Not only for its composition, but for its story, which tells the true tale of a city torn by war and that this perfume was created with the hope to use scent as a way to heal Armenian and Turkish people; ANI also means “memory” in Turkish and during the creation process of Nishane ANI, Cem Karabacak, the beloved friend of Murat Kutran and Mert Guzel passed away. They dedicated Nishane ANI to the loving memory (ANI) of Cem Karabacak. “We also made our friends worldwide listen to that touching folk song during a private event/party in Milan on April 26th. The name of the song is Sari Gelin (in Turkish) and Sari Gyalin (in Armenian) that is a true indicator of cultural interactions and shared emotions by the people who lived on the same land. Researching the facts about this song, we see that Armenians, Turks, Azerbaijanis all claim that this song originally belongs to them but we believe that if anyone understands the true meaning of music they would not allow such political rhetoric get in the way. Music is the language of the universe, it is more divine than to be intermixed with such political views. So to underline our message that just like music, all forms of art including perfume creation have no boundaries.”-Murat and Mert on Nishane ANI- Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief
