Maison Violet Sketch Review (Nathalie Lorson) + Fleshing Out Flowers Draw

Beautiful French Perfumes niche

Charcoal Drawing with Gold by RedDoorArts

The grasp of a perfect shadow or the way the breeze catch a woman’s curl, scribbled in charcoal. A sketch is a first impression of a moment, a fleeting thought rendered to paper. And it is the name of the first fragrance of the venerable, reestablished Maison Violet, whose brand ethos is to adapt and reinvent. Sketch – whose name implies what is yet to come – symbolizes the house’s renewal with an elegant, surprising, milky floral.

Maison Violet Sketch review

John Singer Sargent, sketch of Mrs. George Swinton, 1906

Based on the original 1900 perfume Ambre Royal, Maison Violet Sketch is a rethought oriental — rich, lactonic, woody –  given creative modern twists that keep it from feeling overtly retro. An overarching, cozy creaminess provides the backdrop like the bisque parchment backgrounds to old master drawings. Against this thick, milky-sweet curtain floral and spice notes will stand out at different stages of development like a bas-relief.  This is cashmere for the wrists, a John Singer Sargent aristocrat dressed in Donna Karan; all soft rustles and filtered light, but with a wry archness of expression.

Best Maison Violet perfumes

Gustav Klimt, Portrait of a Lady (Unfinished)

Initially, Sketch’s woody, wooly, soft-serve opening – brimming with ambery tonka bean – reminds me of the pashmina elegance of Chanel Coromandel. But, the resemblance fades suddenly as an unexpected, mentholic note pierces through that ice-milk quiet, bringing the startling top note of Serge Lutens’ Tubereuse Criminelle to mind. Throughout the rest of the perfume’s trajectory, Sketch sets unusual, oblique notes against vanilla and cream: crème brulee one moment, mint pistachio ice cream, the next, steamy chai another, before settling into a luxuriant, anisic woodiness.

Natalie Lorson of Firmenich

Natalie Lorson of Firmenich

Firmenich perfumer Nathalie Lorson’s unusual use of nutmeg is inspired: it adds adding a graduated, spicy dimension to the woods, and provide contrast, punch and ballast to the composition, all the while giving the sensation that you recognize something familiar you cannot quite put a finger on. The way Lorson teases out tuberose’s ammoniated facet – that smell of the fleshy flower just past prime– is so unexpected but strangely harmonious, that Sketch, at its apogee, blooms into a radiant, spicy white floral that smells neither bridal nor sexpot, but comforting, subtly sexy and classy.

Masison violet sketch from the 1900s

The original Sketch in 1924

Maison Violet Sketch is at once so familiar and so strange that it is entrancing. There is more than a suggestion of classic orientals such as Secret de Venus by Weil or Guerlain Shalimar, yet without the overt furriness of the former or the toothsome vanilla heft of the latter. Rather, Sketch treads a middle ground that is both delicate and assertive, its graceful outlines filling in with inventive touches such as that splendid nutmeg and turpentine tuberose. It is enveloping and easy to wear – just the sort of fragrance to dab when you can’t afford that Loro Piana wrap but want to feel cocooned and elegant.

Bon retour parmi nous, MaisonViolet!

Notes: Bergamot, nutmeg, pink pepper, rose, tuberose, patchouli, Madagascar vanilla, tonka bean.

Honestly as a fan of gourmands, when you tell me it brings to mind “creme brûlée, pistachio ice cream, chai tea, milky florals” you have my interest. Also really liked the John singer Sargent imagery…
I’d definitely choose the bottle of Sketch –usa

  • fleurdetilleul says:

The comparison with Guerlain Shalimar caught my attention instantly, that’s one of my favourite fragrances, but I really have a dilemma between a fb of Sketch or the travel sprays. I think I’ll go with the travel set so I can get to know more of Maison Violet’s perfumes and choose my favourite. I live in EU. Thanks!

  • fazalcheema says:

Sketch is a great name. The article is right that woody orientals do have the tendency to smell retro but this one seems like relatively modern. Also it has milky floral elements. I am in US. My choice is the Discovery Set.

  • Damiana C says:

I am intrigued by this perfume that has both rose and tuberose and a warmer base. The pictures are very beautiful! I would love to win the travel spray set and I live in the USA.

  • What interests me most about this fragrance is the assertive subtlety that it possesses. With the delectable note of nutmeg being featured in this concoction that gracefully lends itself to surrounding noses, the fragrance automatically lends itself to my curiosity and desire. I would be interested in the full bottle parfum. (Commenting from Florida.)

  • tuiu silver says:

    I love modern classic fragrances.
The way Lauryn described it caught my attention.
The floral and spicy approach, that still manages to be easy to wear is definitely the part where made me excited haha.
I would like to win a bottle of Maison Violet Sketch please.
    I’m from US, thank you.

  • I love that this house is bringing back the past in a more updated version. Sketch sounds delicious…literally! I am in the US and if I were to be so lucky, I would prefer the full bottle of Sketch. Thank you for the chance!

“Sketch sets unusual, oblique notes against vanilla and cream: crème brulee one moment, mint pistachio ice cream, the next, steamy chai another, before settling into a luxuriant, anisic woodiness.” This line caught my attention immediately. Though not generally a gourmand fan, I really like the use of these notes paired with the florals. If I win, I would like the bottle of Sketch. Thank you for a informative review and a most generous offer. I’m in the USA

Thank you for the great review. That sounds lovely. I am a big fan of classic fragrances and especially classic orientals. Very interested to smell this modern twist. If i win, I would love to get the bottle of Sketch. Greetings from Austria (EU)

  • I’m most intrigued by its association with several classics: Coromandel, Tubereuse criminelle, Shalimar, etc., while being different and original.
My choice would be the travel set so I can discover the whole range. Thanks for the draw!
    I live in EU.

  • I loved that this fragrance was described as “both delicate and assertive“. I think that’s what many women want to feel and smell like. Also, the blend of notes sounds cozy and wearable. I would love the full bottle. I am from the EU.

  • Maison Violet, this is another new house for me. The charcoal drawing with the gold roses drew me right to this article. If this portrait reflects the scent of Sketch in any way… I am curious about it! I am intrigued by Shalimar, but it’s too much for me. The way Lauryn describes this perfume as a more middle ground perfume (than Shalimar), easy to wear, cocooned and at the same time elegant scent makes me want to try it.
If I get the opportunity, I would choose a bottle of Sketch. It sounds so great!
    I live in the Netherlands.
    Thanks for the opportunity!

I love Nathalie Lorson’s work and this sounds so unique! Lauryn had me hooked when she mentioned a similarity to SL Tubereuse Criminelle and the use of white floral in a non -bridal or sexpot manner. Violet Sketch sounds amazing and the entire line seems like something I need to try right away. Thanks for the opportunity to win a bottle (I love Indigo perfumery too!). I am in the US and would love a bottle of Indigo Sketch. Thank you!

  • I liked that Sketch is described as a comforting scent. If lucky, I would be interested in the travel set, so that I could experience more from Maison Violet. Thanks for the opportunity! USA

  • Sketch sounds so interesting because of the mentholated note, quite unique in an oriental. I’m also always interested in the work of Nathalie Lorson. If I were to choose a prize, I would love the travel spray set since I’ve been trying to purchase the discovery set of Maison Violet but it’s been sold out! I live in the USA. Thanks for this wonderful chance to experience this fragrance!

  • The art work drew me in! The history is fascinating. The notes sound intriguing. I am a vintage fragrance love. I would love to get my nose on this beauty! Clearwater Florida USA
I would enjoy the travel sprays. Thank you

  • Cashmere for the wrists sounds sublime. What an evocative review. I would choose the travel spray set if I won the draw, just to have the chance to try all of the scents. Thank you! I am in the USA.

  • IvanVelikov says:

Similar to Chanel Coromandel , and then “the resemblance fades suddenly as an unexpected, mentholic note pierces through that ice-milk quiet” , and at the end chai and luxuriant, anisic woodiness ?
What an unusual , but pleasing smell this fragrance is …. according to Lauryn Beer of course .

Coromandel is one of my all time favorite fragrances, no even slightest comparison intrigues me a lot.
Also all those deserts associations enhanced my curiosity even more. Creme brulee, mint pistachio ice cream, ice milk quiet – Pastry Chef in me is screaming “Smell this one asap”. Spiciness is a nice addition.

    Come on Lauryn – i’m on a diet 🙁
Milky spicy floral with gourmand touches – no doubt my type of fragrance.
Nathalie Lorson sure knows how to use vanilla in her fragrances , so i’m sure Sketch is a good one – i’d like to win a bottle.
Thank you Lauryn for the review , and Maison Violet for the draw.

  • greenhill says:

“Cashmere for the wrists” that sounds so comforting and luxurious. That’s a quality I seek whenever I reach for a vanilla/tonka perfume. I’d pick the bottle of sketch. I live in the US

  • wildevoodoo says:

The idea of an anisic-woodsy, gourmand-y tuberose sounds so wonderful and well balanced! The creme brûlée/chai/mint pistachio ice cream descriptor is absolutely mouthwatering. I can’t quite get into the super-strong, heady, almost decaying tuberose yet, so this sounds like a lovely way to ease into the genre. And the similarities to Shalimar are always a bonus! I would love to win the full bottle of Sketch if chosen! I am in the US 🙂

  • newyork318 says:

I recently got to sample this line and I really appreciate the idea sketching as a first, fleeting idea put onto paper (for that idea to be memorialized, I suppose) – it puts this fragrance into context as symbol of the house’s launch. I found all of the fragrances in the line to be quite fantastic. I’d pick the bottle of Sketch. US.

  • Thanks for review.
I like Natalie Lorson creations, and this sound very elegant – lactonic, woody, elegant floral. Do beautiful ingredients- rose, patchouli, bergamont, pink pepper, vanilla- WOW!
I chose the set of 7.5 ml travel sprays of all collection.

  • Overall vibe Lauryn review gave me is me being in some high end gelateria in Italy , sitting in front of the stands and inhaling the amalgam of different gelato smells. Some sweet, some floral, some spicy. I imagine me standing there wondering what to get , and how much scoops I’ll be able to eat.
I’d like to win a bottle thank you.

  • Sketch sounds absolutely yummy and I’d love to sniff it off my lady. Crème brulee, mint pistachio ice cream, chai… need I say more? It also helps that there’s a suggestion of Shalimar which she already loves. I’m in TX USA

  • The note of violet always reminds me of those violet candies my mom used to have in her purse when I was a kid. So whenever I smell a fragrance that has that note in it, it always conjures up that wonderful memory.
I would choose the full size bottle.
    I live in the US.

  • It is so great that more and more old perfume houses are resurrected from the ashes, and even greater that they have some old perfume formulas in their archives, which can be resurrected and modernised. I’d love to try this perfumes, as I’m a big fan of historic perfumery. Of course I would chose a full bottle of Sketch. I live in Poland.

  • I love this review from Lauryn. A fragrance that is delicate and assertive is very interesting. Creme Brulee and Pistachio ice cream now thats sounds like what I like. I would choose the bottle of Sketch. I am in CA, USA.

  • Touches of Coronandel , sprinkles of Shalimar , ice-milk quiet , creme brûlée , mint pistachio ice cream , but also chai and some spiciness… what is this ?!?
Lauryn you’re not playing with us right? 🙂
Mint pistachio is my favorite ice cream. I’ll contact @indigoperfumerie tomorrow . Hope they carry Maison Violet samples. Sample set will be great.
Bottle of Sketch will be perfect thank you.

  • As historian it always is appealing to me when something of the past is reinvented and brought in a modified way into the present and future. This seems to be the case here, 🙂

    Interested in the Parfum.

  • Sketch is awesomly delicate. I admire Lauryn‘s review honestly as she managed to describe the many wonderful facets of this complex creation. From the four fragrances I least expected Sketch to be my favorite as I‘m a very floral gal. But this is just wow! I would love to win the bottle. I am living in Germany.

  • Key words: cozy creaminess; elegance of Chanel Coromandel; comforting, subtly sexy and classy; both delicate and assertive; at once so familiar and so strange that it is entrancing.
Sketch interested me enough to want a full bottle. I live in the EU.

  • Wendy Caudle says:

I adore violet Fragrances, and this one sounds magnificent – the notes of both vanilla AND Tonka bean (which i adore) truly have me intrigued. And the description of how the nutmeg brings out the tuberose in quite that way is alluring. I’d very much love to try the Parfum. Thank you for your generous Giveaway
