Jusbox Cheeky Smile Review (Dominique Moellhausen) + Vinyl Victory Draw

Night time. Art by Michael Cho©

You’re 5 years old and one morning you wake up suddenly understanding the inside of your brain—as if someone crawled through your ears in the night and, unbeknownst to you, plugged something in. So you’re up and—boOM!– all of the sudden, you get it. You understand. You finally see how you on the outside and you on the inside can be two different things; you close your eyes, you steady your breath; you let yourself imagine you’re small inside your big, warm, body, wrapped in yourself like in a comic book frame, looking out through small slits where your eyes are; it’s pitch black and soft and dry and comfortable, and it’s quiet; nothing but your heart, pooroom-poodoom/pooroom-poodoom/pooroom-poodoom.

At school, you grow and play; you’re into sports; the team buzzes often with the synergy of the many, the coach picks up the whistle and you need to pick up the pace- faster, higher, stronger- pooroom-poodoom in your eardrums, running in bright colored uniforms through emerald green grass and bright light photography, budding and growing and running, pooroom-poodoom/pooroom-poodoom.

Later still, you go out; it’s a new club, and you’re young, and you’re free, and blood is boiling in you as is in many of yous, and you all move in tandem under strobes, and you move and you move until there’s nothing left to do but moving, until moving itself is surreal like a slow-motion passage in a movie when the lights are surreal and the dancing is surreal and there’s no sound except for your breathing, and your heart in your throat smack on the beat, pooroom-poodoom.

I often wish to revisit that state of black light suspension. For when do we ever get again, in adult life and through legal means, to perpetual movement, or abandonment, of exhaustive bliss and communal wavering? To maddening soundboxes? To beat?

Jusbox Cheeky Smile brings that back with a sole puff and the unbearable lightness of unearthly concoctions: unusual, atmospheric, inorganic, man-made. Powerful woody notes mix with a bone-dry resiny accord (not unlike the rosin musicians’ use on their bows) and a brash musk to produce a base that’s repetitive, overbearing, and greatly addictive. On it, a sweet element similar to sugarcane, sharp tones of pepper and phenols, and dry-grassy layers of patchouli and vetiver blend to reveal something completely different than the sum of its parts. Saltiness and a slightly metallic top make it modern and, at the same time, give it a very familiar feel. Original and unabashedly synthetic, Cheeky Smile smells, plainly, of a dj booth- dusty wooden boards and inky music scores, almost-melting vinyl and old bakelite mike handles, sweaty headphones, and hot, hot, hot wires spinning beats over, and over, and over, until you lose sense of direction and your heart glows in the dark.

Official notes: a molecular cocktail of Iso E Super, Amber Core, Amber Extreme and Cashmeran.

Special mention: Jusbox Cheeky Smile has the first fluorescent packaging in perfumery history. The bottle is finished in a special varnish that appears light grey in daylight, but which turns into a vibrant, acid-green color when seen in absence of light or under ultraviolet light. Cheeky Smile was inspired by late 80s Acid House music which began in London.

  • What a cool bottle.  Jusbox has some great branding.  Never was into the rave scene or house music, but that wouldn't stop me from liking this fragrance.  The wood+musk+synthetics makes perfect sense for the notes of this frag.  USA

  • My black light experience was long ago, lol, in a more, shall we say, mellow kind of way. This fragrance sounds like a great wear on a crowded dance floor. USA

Wow as a student athlete who grew into a 90s raver this description really makes me need to try this. What an interesting sounding fragrance and oh my god the description! I do like a nice metallic scent and I am floored by how you’ve managed to verbalize that kinetic energy of youth. I’m located in the US.

  • This sounds great! I was just checking out all of their fragrances on the website. Great selection. Really hard to decide which one to try first. Awesome concept with the black light bottle. USA.

  • Ivan.napoleon says:

It sounds to wear it in a Bar! Id love to try this! Amazing presentation.

    Miami Florida

    Thanks

  • Wow, the notes breakdown is so unusual but I believe it can perfectly correspond with Acid House music. Maybe it is not my favorite genre of music, but I'm really curious how it smell like. The concept for the brand id fantastic, and to reflect the various music genres by the scents is great idea. I live in Poland.

A fluorescent bottle of fragrance was something I didn't know I needed until now!

A fluorescent bottle of fragrance was something I didn't know I needed until now! I like a little acid music every now and then. In the USA.

  • The fluorescent bottle sounds awesome. The major synthetic notes sounds interesting and i have been wanting to smell for this for a little while now so very intrigued. I love techno music, , not sure if that is the same as acid music but probably in thr same zone. In the USA. Thanks for the chance to win!

  • fazalcheema says:

Interesting bottle that changes shape in light and dark. Jusbox Cheeky Smile seems quite a modern composition that is safe for all year wear. US.

  • As a acid house music lover and just music lover in general this brand really interested me. The bottle is awesome too would love to be lucky enough to try this iut. I live in North Carolina US.

Thanks for the chance jusbox and cafleurebon

  • This sounds great! Cool bottle, interesting juice, amazing review!

    I live in Romania. Thanks!

Hello! Dana's description makes me really want to try this fragrance. Nice bottle also 🙂 i liked the influences acid music had on tue dance and pop music i was listening as a young teenager. Regards from Romania EU.

  • I didn't like acid house music back then, today I'm open to any kind of electronic music. But your tangible and breathless review catches me, and so do the strange notes. I would love to meet my first jusbox in Germany. – Thank you for the draw!

  • I loved the introduction to this review and actually the fact that pretty much half of it has just set the ground and created the mood for the description of this fragrance. About the scent itself, I'll be honest: I would first and foremost love to have it just for the fluorescent packaging! I guess I would keep the bottle forever just to use it as my "party light", hahah. Otherwise, vinyl, ink, headphones, wires – that sounds, well, if not necessarily pleasant, at least captivating. I would love to try this, thanks for the chance! From Romania.

  • And whoops, forgot to mention I have no idea what acid house music is – had to check it just to find out! Still have to develop an opinion about it.

  • WOW!!! Such a interesting beginning about  childhood and youth!! I really enjoyed it.

I am very intrigued by " powerful wood and bone-dry resine accord" – very interesting duet.

I want to test ihis perfume.

I have neve listen Acid Hous music.

    US

  • Always have been a lover of Trance, House, Acid, Techno and other forms of high energy and electronic digital music. Great realteable article. I still attend a glow party now and then. Acid music can evoke such moods and euphoria or a great way to release to stressful week and let is go. This fragrance sounds amazing. I'm a musk lover and this fragrance has captured my attention. I enjoy the unusual and this stands out. The bottle is to die for and would display beautifully in my blacklight bathroom. LOL. In the USA. Thumbs up for the review.

  • 78 ml, nice touch. The description of the developement of the notes by the author has me very interested in this unique offering. As far as acid house music, I'm probably too old for that. US

  • I enjoyed the reviewer's description of the avant-garde, synthetic, yet addictive notes, which seem to nicely complement the acid house music inspiration and the fluorescent bottle. I live in the US and I am definitely curious about this.

  • My interest was immediately sparked by the mention of Acid House, a music style i alwys liked and still enjoy sometimes. Since i feel too old now to go to a rave or something similar, am I imagining now putting this scent on and listening to some house in the headphones 😉 The synthetic nature of the fragrance fits as well perfectly to the theme. I am living in Europe, Germany.

  • Really nice presentation from the house and especially a fantastic review. After reading the article, i am intrigued and really curios about it (addictive notes, avant-garde and synthetics). I’ve had the chance to try some fragrances from Jusbox house and what i remember is Live’n Loud, very good one. Thanks Dana for the great review and thanks for the draw, i am in the EU.

  • DulciusExAsperis says:

Fun giveaway and I think the fluorescent glowing bottle looks really cool. I wouldn't say I am a huge fan of acid house music (though my husband, a musician, really loves it so I have definitely heard my share). Such an evocative review with the pooroom-pooroom – I would love to try this one. I live in the US.

  • Woody notes and with bone dry resiny accords!  Wow!  I have been wanting to try some of the scents from Jusbox and Cheeky smile sounds amazing.  Thank you Dana, the review was fun to read!  I would love to try!  USA

  • citizenkage says:

I grew up in the South Florida rave scene and definitely partook in the festivities. This review and these pictures brought me back to those times. Pure nastalgia! I love fragrances because there is nothing like smells that can bring you back to a certain place and time. If this fragrance can encapsulate the scents of those times than that would be truly special to me. I am so excited to try this fragrance. I've been eyeing Jusbox for a little while now. I love what this company is all about. Fantastic review as always. I live in Florida, USA. I do like Acid House.

  • Your description of the scent brought me back in time when I was in my 20s and my friend was a DJ! And what an incredibly cool bottle!!!! I'd be so thrilled to try this scent!

    I live in the USA.

  • Such a cool fragrance. I like that it has Powerful woody notes mix with a bone-dry resiny accord. I think the bottle is very beautiful and unique.

I don’t know anything about Acid House music.

    Live in USA.

  • Always easy to slip right into the state of mind Dana’s describing. This one’s left me curious and nostalgic. Great review!

  • Loredana O says:

Very interesting review…it makes me curious…this fragrance should be tryed…and that futuriste bottle it is a novelty for me!

    Greetings from Romania, EU.

  • Very interesting bottle. The review is great and fill me with lot of curiosity. Thank's for the chance Jusbox Perfumes.

    I'm living in EU.

  • Lacramioara says:

She could not make such a description, except Dana. The whole soul puts it when it talks about a perfume, that you want to give it a nose, you can get into her story. Honestly I was never in a club, just in my youth at the disco. I'm really curious about his smell. Thank you, Dana, for always going into the middle of the story. Live in Romania.

  • doveskylark says:

Jusbox sounds like a super fun house. I checked their website and it is joyful to navigate. I'm very interested in the notes that smell like vinyl and a DJ booth. I used to love going out to clubs in the late 90s. I wasn't a huge fan of Acid House music, but I was a huge fan of going out.

    I live in the USA.

  • Great review! Unfortunately, I have never tested any Jusbox perfumes and listen Acid House music.

I would like to test perfumes, whic like "…hot wires spinning beats over, and over, and over, until you lose sense of direction and your heart glows in the dark".

    Sounds very interesting.

  • NiceVULady says:

Crazy bottle and a really crazy like review.  I know nothing about this house except for the interesting reviews on Cafleurbon.  Acid House music passed me by.  I really enjoyed the "ride" of this review.  Almost like being there.  Thanks for the draw.  I'm in the USA

  • Cool looking bottle and interesting notes. Haven’t tried a Jusbox fragrance yet but they seem to make good fragrances. Didn’t listen to Acid House but I did like House music. Thanks, US

  • I loved Dana and her memories. I would love to see this glow in the dark and don’t mind synthetics. I read the review of no rules here too

     Eu

  • I enjoyed going down memory lane with Dana and could completely relate! While reading this I was envisioning what it would be like to be at Studio 54. The packing is awesome and it's so cool that it is the first fragrance to be flourescent. I absolutely need Jusboc Cheeky Smile in my life. Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!

  • First off great review! I have had my eye on this house lately they have been getting alot of positive attention! Their while line sounds awesome and the one that I want to try most is green bubble. I love that they are all based on different types of music or linspred by certain artist it's just an amazing concept! Thank you for the giveaway I am in the USA in AZ.

  • Great review by Dana. I love late 80s House music back in the days. Jusbox Cheeky smile I know is something that I would love because of the nostalgia alone. I deeply remember those nights in dark industrial centers with the smell of sweat, fog machines, leather, perfumes, wood and vinyl. I live in CA, USA.

  • Never been much into Acid House but the way Dana talks about pepper and phenols sounds incredibly appealing. The whole concept behind the perfume gives the fragrance lot of interest. I am from thebEU

  • bumbuliuki says:

Thank you Dana for such an evocative review ! I'm identifying with some parts of the description. I wasn't really into rave/acid music back in the day, but I enjoy it sometimes and it has a profound nostalgia factor for me.
The combination of purely synthethic notes in this case is totally justified. The black light suspension, as Dana says is a sensation I enjoy sometimes, because it brings me back to those days with no worries and a simple, free life.
The bottle is incredibly cool and fits the concept perfectly.
Thank you for the review and the chance !
