SHP Evolution Collection: Origin Story, The Now and Hereafter Reviews + The Woolsey Fire Draw

The Persistence Of Memory, Salvador Dali

"When I think of where I am, and where I dream to go, I cannot help but reflect back on where it all began."  Sarah Horowitz-Thran

Sarah Horowitz-Thran began her journey in fragrance almost thirty years ago when she first stepped over the threshold of a bespoke perfumery on Newbury Street in Boston. As a pioneer in the indie perfume industry Sarah has lived many lives since her interest in olfaction first blossomed in 1988. Her passion has always been to capture and recreate emotion, reflecting dreams and memories in scent. The new unisex Sarah Horowitz Parfums SHP Evolution Collection tells Sarah's personal story.  Three fragrances, Origin Story, The Now and Hereafter, function as a fragrant time warp, revealing and involving us in Sarah's past, the present moment and beyond. There is a vast universe of niche and indie fragrances out there! New scents seem to come onto the market faster than the speed of light. Sadly, many of these "introductions" smell disconcertingly similar. Nevertheless, every now and then, while pondering a new perfume, I find myself pushed into the deep end, so to speak, living an olfactory experience of excitement, confusion and discovery.  The three intriguingly beautiful and very different fragrances in the SHP Evolution Collection have rekindled my fascination with a mind blowing old theme.

The Eye of Surrealist Time Salavador Dali 1971

" Quantum mechanics, the theory that governs the smallest possible spaces, forces our human brains to accept some really wacky, uncomfortable realities. Maybe we live in a world where certain observations can force our universe to branch into multiple ones. Or maybe actions in the present influence things earlier in time. " Ryan F. Mandelbaum – particle physicist, writer and opera singer

Gail's Strange  Perfume Universe

The olfactory story told by the SHP Evolution Collection has me contemplating, once again, the nature of time and asking myself how the perfumes I will smell tomorrow might influence the psychological expectations (and perhaps even the physiological/molecular impressions) of what I am wearing today – or have worn in the past. The SHP Evolution Collection prompts me to imagine that our familiar temporal causality and the implications of a quantum Retro-causality, (backwards causation where actions and objects in the present or future influence actions and objects in the past) are both capable of altering my immediate and future perceptions and memories of fragrance. The three perfumes in the SHP Evolution Collection – Origin Story, The Now and Hereafter – seem inextricably bound to and entangled with one another, each a discreet and unique perfume in its own right that at once recalls and predicts the effects of the others.

The Lugubrious Game Salvador Dali 1929

Of course, true Retro-causality refers to unimaginably tiny spaces and particles.  Nevertheless, I can't help but imagine that the Art of Perfumery, as exemplified by the SHP Evolution Collection, demonstrates a unity of the plastic and temporal arts, functioning as both particles and waves, so to speak, with obvious rhythmic commonalities and interchangeable perspectives. Before I get too deeply mired in this weird and wacky alternative quantum universe I want to briefly describe each fragrance in the SHP Evolution Collection. Let me begin with the Hereafter.

Sarah Horowitz Parfums Hereafter was designed "…for this present moment and all the moments to come…" The tart, rich, berry-like sweetness of blood orange and the spicy balsamic and slightly medicinal warmth of cardamom are woven seamlessly together as vivacious top notes.  This brief effervescence melds swiftly into the dry, woody, clear cedar qualities of Iso-E-Super. In  Hereafter the dry-down focuses on the evolution of Virginia cedarwood as it morphs from smooth and oily to sweet and dry.  Rich amber, vanilla and sandalwood add darkness and depth to what at first appears as a froth of lively and buoyant citrus.  Notes: Blood orange, cardamom, Iso-E-Super, Virginia cedarwood, sandalwood, rich amber and vanilla.

Moving on to the past: The SHP Evolution Collection Origin Story initially manifests as bright, zesty yuzu, a scented vignette, seen through glasses tinged with balsam and tasting of the smallest hint of grapefruit pith.  The fruity tang of cassis carries both earthy and green minty undertones into a yesterday filled with wine, black roses and jasmine. Sarah Horowitz Parfums Origin Story ties this nostalgic bouquet of flowers and fruits with a spicy, herbaceous ribbon of clear Tunisian patchouli, recalling, as if in a dream, the crystals, apothecary bottles and mysterious oils of the bespoke perfumery on Newbury Street. Resinous pine suffuses a rich amber supported by china musk and buttery Mysore sandalwood, completing the Origin Story, the tale of a perfume that is one of my favorite evocative and modern "new age" classics. Notes: Japanese yuzu, cassis, Jasmine grandiflorum, Egyptian jasmine, black rose, spicy patchouli, French vanilla, China musk, Tunisian patchouli, Mysore sandalwood, and rich amber.

Today, as I write these reviews, California is experiencing some of the most devastating fires in its history. * At this moment in time nothing seems more appropriate and more healing to me than The Now. SHP Evolution The Now uses the cooling, but not necessarily aquatic, elements of smooth white tea and freshly cut grass to create a lifted and purified experience of the present moment. A bright etheric and evanescent neroli lends its delicate yet powerful breath to the hay-like sweetness of fresh fig. Hints of white amber and intimations of a cool onshore flow seem to bless the earth with soothing floral mists, revealing the regenerative power of The Now.  Notes:  White tea, fresh cut grass, fig, neroli, white amber and oceanic musk

 Salvador Dali Time

Only time (whatever that may be) will tell.”  –  Stephen Hawking, A Brief History of Time

My experiences with each offering in the SHP Evolution Collection modify my impressions of the others. The modern woody qualities in the Hereafter tamper with my perception of the earthy sensuality of the Origin Story, effecting memories of the cool centering power of The Now.  All three perfumes in the SHP Evolution Collection, applied separately over a period of days, simultaneously entangle my olfactory experiences in the past, present and future. "It's like déjà vu – all over again"!  And how is this possible?

*Please note:  One of the perfumers who works with Sarah, helping to create her beautiful fragrances, has lost everything to the California fires. To help please see Sarah's Go Fund Me Page for more information.

Disclaimer:  I would like to thank Sarah Horowitz Parfums for the generous samples of  the SHP Evolution Collection.  My opinions are my own.

  • Reading about these fragrances I was drawn most to one. Hereafter has iso-E Super and I’m quite fond of that note. That and it’s vanilla base is something to look forward to. Would love to win this one as a prize.
I don’t know a soul in California. US

  • Quantum Mechanics is, indeed, a strange and unpredictable world. I share Gail’s grief over the fires in California and if even this does not persuade us to take climate change seriously, I am not sure what else will… My choice is Hereafter due to its notes such as sandalwood and cedarwood. The choice of Dali is great choice because Dali is one of my most favorite artists. I am in US.

  • If so lucky, I’d choose Origin Story. Gail makes it sound like a classic and elegant choice. Prayers to all in California. USA

  • God they all sound amazing! I would pick Hereafter though – I’m always enthralled with a Blood Orange note. I don’t know anyone close to me who has been affected by the fires, but I have a deep love for California having spent many years living there, going to school there, meeting my children’s father there and having both my babies there. I wish safety and recovery for all!

  • I live in California, but in the south. We were not effected this time but I do have friends living in thousand oaks, California. Between the shootings and the fires, these people are having a terribly traumatic time in their lives. I wish we could all be well and happy .
I would pick Origin Story and I also loved all the Salvatore Dali photos. Thank you.

  • I love the imagination that goes into each of the fragrances. Evokes a real sense of wonder the creations. Each one of them sound amazing. If I had to choose one, Hereafter would be my choice if I won. I don’t know anyone in CA.

  • I know no one who is personally effected by the fires in California. Thoughts and prayers to all those who have lost everything. I quite like Origin Story. Sounds very interesting and different from the usual. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the USA

  • I do not know anyone personally affected by the wildfire of California, but my prayers go out to them.

Based on the reviews and the article, I find it very interesting that the fragrances are not connected to emotion or nostalgia, but rather flexibility and movement of time and reality. I find this very intriguing.

I am very interested in ” The Now ” A Soft, white tea aquatic sounds beautiful . Best Wishes

    I am a us Resident

  • I love the concept of this trio and how they describe the three temporal periods. The Hereafter is my favorite by the sounds of it but Origin Story also sounds great. I don’t know anybody personalky who has been affected by the fires this year but it’s a very scary time. I also live in California.

  • Hereafter is the one i’d like to win.I do like the notes , Gails description and the backstory too.I do remember the mini review/preview Sara did on her Youtube channel.
Tart sweetness, spicy and balsamic , cardamom ,cedarwood with amber and vanilla in the base-sounds like a winner in my book.

  • I love the notes for the HereAfter juice, i think it’s a fantatstic one. Thanks for this amazing chance. One friend of mine live in Oakland CA, it is really sad when something like this happends, extremly dramatic. Thanks God she is safe now and nothing bad happened to her familly. CA

  • Great theme behinds these three fragrances, and I like the review play with them to give some more perspective on the scents. I really do think when you smell something new it can change your feelings about something you smelled before in ways you wouldn’t imagine. All the scents sound lovely. The Now sounds very fresh with the interesting notes of white tea and white amber. Hereafter sounds so good with the creamy rich wood notes and vanilla. The Origin story sounds amazing with its rich list of notes and would be my choice of prize.
I’m so sorry to here about your friend who suffered through the wild fires. I’ve been very sad to hear about all the people affected by it.

  • All of these fragrances sound wonderful to me, but the yuzu note of Origin Story is what piques me interest the most. I also can relate to a past that was filled with wine, black roses, and jasmine. i would choose Origin Story for sure.
My prayers are for all those affected in California–and all of us who will be further affected by cataclysmic disasters from climate change. Lord help us.
    I live in the USA.

  • I found this appealing “The fruity tang of cassis carries both earthy and green minty undertones into a yesterday filled with wine, black roses and jasmine”. Makes it quite interesting.
    I’ll pick Origin Story.
I don’t know anyone affected by the fires. Our prayers are with all of them.

  • This is such a fascinating concept! Each fragrance has such a unique composition with such an interesting backstory.

I am thankful that I do not know anyone personally affected by the wildfires. I am so grateful for that. I’m so sad to read that one of Sarah’s perfumers lost their home to the fires. I will check out the GoFundMe page and will share it on my Facebook page.

Each perfume sounds so unique, it’s hard to choose just one. But I think I would select The Now.

I live in the USA (Pennsylvania)

  • Thank you for the quantum mechanics tidbits along with the evocative perfume descriptions. I imagine they may be meant to be compared and contrasted, the one that sparks my imagination is Hereafter. (USA)

  • Being from Boston USA, I am pleased to see that Sarah started her fragrance journey on Newbury Street! Love the intriguing concept of the interconnectedness of Origin Story, The Now and Hereafter. If I were to be so lucky to win, my choice would be Hereafter based on your beautiful description of “brief effervescence melds swiftly into the dry, woody, clear cedar qualities.” Regardless, thanks for introducing us to the brand.

I personally do not know anyone affected by the CA wildfires. My thoughts are with everyone affected by this devastating event.

  • I love that Sarah goes into the “deep end”. There are just too many similar, releases that are uninspiring. I’d choose The Past if I’m the lucky winner. Those notes sound amazing and I’m trying more jasmine notes lately.

A dear friend of the family who is 81 and just had heart surgery in October was rescued by a neighbor with only the clothes on his back. He is now living with his daughter in Seattle. I would encourage people that if you personally know someone to donate directly so all the money can go to the intended person. USA.

  • Hereafter sounds quite wonderful! The notes remind me somewhat of Terre d’hermes, which is a personal favorite. Fortunately, I do not know anyone impacted by the wild fires! US

  • To be honest i’m not into quantum mechanics , but i’m into surrealism and i can tell the first picture is not The Persistence of Memory – i do have a replica on the wall in the kitchen. It’s some sort of interpretation …. mix between The Persistence of Memory , The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory and…something else.
I’m not familiar with the Sarah Horowitz parfums. As far as i can remember Sebastian , Steven or BFL did a review on Youtube…but that’s all i can remember.
All 3 from Evolution collection sounds like a pretty nice fragrances, but Hereafter is the one for me.I am a sucker for blood orange fragrances – can’t help it.Add some cardamom , with amber and vanilla , make it a bit woody – say no more.
Personally don’t know people affected by the CA wildfires.Don’t know anyone living over there.Thoughts and prayers to all the victims .

  • My thoughts and prayers go out to all who are affected by the wildfires! I wish I had known about SHP when I was doing my graduate study at BUSPH as I passed Newbury street everyday. If I were lucky enough to win my choice would be Origin Story. “The fruity tang of cassis carries both earthy and green minty undertones into a yesterday filled with wine, black roses and jasmine” and also the patchouli sold it for me. Thanks for the draw and I live in the US! 🙂

  • Thank you everyone for commenting and entering the generous draw provided by Sarah Horowitz Parfums. And thank you! Bubeto_GG for pointing out the errata! It was my error. The first Dalí is indeed not “The Persistence of Memory” but “Soft Watch at the Moment of First Explosion”, c.1954 by Salvador Dalí. Thank you and everyone again. And Be sure to check back at CaFleureBon for the winner of the draw.

  • Gail – what a wonderful piece. For the first time I didn’t throw up my hands at the mention of quantum mechanics – you have a gift for relating information 🙂 It was a fascinating way to explain the relationship among these 3 perfumes. All my best wishes as your part of the country heals from the fires.
