Abel Perfumes Green Cedar, Cobalt Amber and Red Santal (Frances Shoemack and Isaac Sinclair) ~ Fragrance Reviews + Primary Colors Draw

Frances Shoemack and Isaac Sinclair of Abel Perfumes

From Vintner to Perfumer is not that big a leap if you think about it. Both depend on growth seasons and the fickleness of Mother Nature, both use “profiles” and “notes” to describe products. Without your sense of smell, the taste of wine wouldn’t exist, and both end products can be forgettable or sublime; dependent on ingredients, weather, and the finesse, skill, and grace of the Winemaker/Perfumer.

Abel Perfumes Golden Neroli, White Vetiver, Cobalt Amber, Gray Labdanum, Red Santal and Green Cedar

At the September 2017 Pitti Fragrance Fair in Florence Italy, indispensable and knowledgeable Çafleurebon writers Ermano Picco and Danu Seith-Fyr extolled the exquisite creations of Abel Perfumes, a new Amsterdam-via-Australia-via-New Zealand collection. Company owner and former winemaker Frances Shoemack (she shares winemaking with our Contributor Danu-Seith Fyr) collaborated with perfumer Isaac Sinclair (a student of Master Perfumer Maurice Roucel) to create Abel Perfumes, an inaugural line of five100% naturals and the new Green Cedar released this year. And if you have any doubts about the tenacity and staying power of natural scents, Abel Perfumes is here to school you with these three non-gender specific fragrances, that are now available in the USA!!!.

Detail from a painting by Sr. Editor Gail Gross©

Cobalt Amber (2016):“Midnight in Paris meets Copenhagen chic. Sensual and elegant on women, leathery musk on men. Perfect for either, best by night.”Chic indeed. Wearing Abel Perfumes Cobalt Amber, a contemporary riff on amber is akin to walking on a warm beach where the sand is dazzling white and powdery soft. This spicy and beautiful amber-based Eau De Parfum, with its cooling gin martini note of juniper, warmed by the inky depth of cacao and tonka, would not be out of place under an umbrella at an oceanfront resort, or strolling the quayside promenade on a balmy summers eve. The epitome of chill amber. Apply some on each pulse point and watch your lover lap it up like a kitten who found the cream.Notes: pink pepper, cardamom, juniper berry, cacao, tonka bean, Peru balsam, amber.

Red Santal (2016):“Fire blazing in the dark, glowing, winter gardens full of heaving darcey bussell roses, Sicily in January….”Abel Perfume’s Red Santal is hands down, sandalwood done right. Warm and enveloping yet cool as a Caribbean breeze, Red Santal is smooth like a Marvin Gaye ballad that rocks you right down to your soul. The cloves and pepper keep things spicy and the bergamot adds just the right amount of zing that’ll keep you going like an energizer bunny. It is both sensual and meditative, and a true joy to wear. Notes: Clove bud, black and pink pepper, bergamot, ginger, thyme, East Indian, West Indies, and Australian sandalwood.

Abel Perfumes Green Cedar (2018): “A southern escape, and those sounds, the sounds of this place, echoing in my mind, velvet curtains hiding the stage, lack of light, radiant shadows, perfect melancholia, embraced…”. Like opening an aromatic hope chest stowed in a cool basement, dust motes swirling and waltzing in faint beams of sunlight, Abel Perfumes Green Cedar is a cool wood-filled breath of fresh air. Our small island house is surrounded by both Cedar and Madrone trees, and there is something holy and other-worldly in their presence. Cedar has been beloved and venerated since the time of the North Coast First Nations people, used in cleansing rituals, meditations, and as we still do, brought into the house; their aromatic needles filling our rooms. Green Cedar captures the very essence of the natural world, and wearing it is akin to anointing your skin with the life-force of the forest. Notes: Magnolia, cardamom, guiac wood, cypriol, Texas & Atlas Mountain Cedar.

Disclosure: Many thanks to Indigo Perfumery for the samples. The opinions are my own.

it is great that new brands are given chances to students of celebrated perfumers. Green Cedar appeals to me the most since it is cool, woody creation that also has guiac wood note. My choice will be Green Cedar. I am in US.

  • What appeals to me is the cardamom note in Abel Perfumes Green Cedar. I’m a sucker for cardamom. For that reason, I would choose the 50ml Green Cedar. Arkansas, USA

  • I was all set to choose the Cobalt Amber but then I read of the clove bud in the Red Santal, so Red Santal 50ml would be my choice if chosen. US

  • NiceVULady says:

Loved Robert’s review. Wonderfully informative. I thought a great deal about the Discovery set, but think I would really like the Green Cedar. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

I loved how Robert’s reviews of the three fragrances involve all senses!
It seems that these scents a multi-sensual experience, especially the smooth “like a Marvin Gaye ballad that rocks you right down to your soul” Red Santal, which would be my choice, if I won.

I love the comparison of winemaking and perfumery, and the focus on new voices in the industry. The fact that these fragrances are natural appeals to me as well. I would love to try Red Santal with thanks to Abel Perfumes and CaFleureBon for such a generous giveaway! I live in Australia.

  • Gregory Duncan says:

I’m intrigued by Abel’s use of naturals and the direction the house is taking with a winemaker at the helm. As always thank you for your generosity!

  • I love natural perfumes! I’ve seen this brand reviewed on youtube before. Sounds interesting. Cobalt Amber appeals to me in that it sounds very sensual and Red Santal has pepper, ginger, and sandalwood which are all favorites. If I have to choose I’ll go with 50ml of Cobalt Amber. The description of a lover coming at me like a kitten got to me. I’m in the USA

  • Scented Hound says:

Very happy to see a fragrance house that is using natural ingredients that have staying power. The noses moved from wines to fragrance, this could not be more interesting. Robert’s description of each scent makes for a challenging decision, but the Cedar and Madrone trees are kin to me, so if lucky, I would choose Green Cedar. Thank you Robert for the descriptive review and to Abel for natural perfumes and this generous draw. Waving from fire scorched California!

  • Robert’s comparison of Cobalt Amber with a walk on a hot summer sand has made me want to have something to remember this summer by! The notes seem promising, and I’m pretty sure that Monsieur Roucel’s student must have something up his sleeve.

Oh, and the artwork by Gail Gross is truly beautiful.

I’d be happy to win a bottle of Cobalt Amber. Thanks to Abel Perfumes for the generous draw. I’m from Russia

  • peppermoon says:

As a foodie and a perfume lover, I agree that taste and fragrance hobbies can easily go hand in hand. I love the photo set in the middle (the one with the bottles on saturated color backdrops) and the description of winter rose gardens.

I live in the USA, please enter me for the bottle of Cobalt Amber. Thank you for the draw!

  • Elizabeth T. says:

I really like the bottle and box design of this one. Simple and classic. I like the idea of Green Cedar, opening a fragrant hope chest… this would be my choice. Cobalt Amber would come in a close second. The name itself seems almost contradictory, and I like that. Thank you for this review and generous draw. I’m in the USA.

  • Very nice review, Robert! I love your descriptions for each fragrance, and they all sound amazing! I’ve never tried anything by Abel Perfumes, but would love to. I like that they’re all natural. If I were to win, I would choose Green Cedar, because I’m a big fan of cedar fragrances. Thanks for the draw! I’m located in the USA.

  • Marvin Gaye and Red Santal, great descriptions. Sounds amazing. Thank you for the draw. I live in the US.

  • I have heard such great things about Abel Perfumes. All 3 sound beautiful but the way Robert described Cobalt Amber made me imagine myself loving it. Therefore, I would choose Cobalt Amber if I won. I am in the USA.

  • Belladonna says:

I’ve always wondered why there wasn’t more of a relationship between wine and perfume, hearing about Frances Shoemack was my favorite part. All the descriptions sound so gorgeous and I’ve had the opportunity to try Grey Labdanum, which definitely is. Green Cedar would be my choice, in the US. Thank you for the generous drawing!

  • Goodness what a prize! They all sound amazing but I am on such a big sandalwood kick at the moment so my choice would have to be 50ml of the Red Santal. YES. It sounds magnificent with all those sandalwoods in there. Wow.

    I am in Melbourne Australia

  • Winemaking and perfumery at times i thought about the correlation between the two there are definitely things related it makes sense. These fragrances sound very nice some of my favourite notes/accords in them, im very intrigued to see how these fragrances turned out.

I would choose the 50ml if i was lucky enough to win, which scent im undecided at moment if i win ill choose then if thats ok they all sound so good 🙂

Canada here, and thanks for generous giveaway !

  • They all sound really good. I like spicy scents, and clove is a lovely note. But I thought Green Cedar sounded the most intersting of the bunch. It sounds dusty and dry, which can be refreshing at times, and inconspicuous.
Im in the US. If I win, I’d like the green cedar.
    Thanks

  • I loved Robert’s review and I am happy to know that these are natural fragrances! The Cobalt Amber spoke to me the most: “Midnight in Paris meets Copenhagen chic. Sensual and elegant on women, leathery musk on men. Perfect for either, best by night.” This one just spoke to my soul and I love the notes and description of it. If I were lucky enough to win I would choose the 50 ml of Cobalt Amber. Thanks for the draw and I live in the US! 🙂

  • Robert’s reviews are spot on. I have tested all of the Abel fragrances. Even so, I would have a difficult time choosing which of the 3 mentioned fragrances I would prefer. They are all very nice. As the matter of fact, all of Abel’s fragrances are lovely. At the moment my favorite would be golden neroli, but that might be because the temperatures of here are sky high lately. I would however choose Cobalt Amber, because I’m pretty sure the temperatures will drop at one point and I’ll be in need of a warm and cuddly fragrance. I live in EU. Thanks for the lovely draw.

  • fleurdelys says:

Great review Robert ! Always excited to read more about natural perfumery.
Taste and smell have a strong correlation so using the experience as a winemaker to create perfume is a great idea.
Great use of photos and paintings in this article. Thank you Gail for sharing your work.
Still have yet to try any fragrance from Abel Perfumes. Would love to start that wih Cobalt Amber.
I live in the EU. Thank you for the article and giveaway.

  • doveskylark says:

This review was like poetry, especially the review of Green Cedar. I can completely sense opening the hope chest in a basement with the dust swirling in the sunlight. I also enjoyed researching Madrone trees.
I would choose the sampler if I were the winner.
    I live in the USA.

  • I agree with Robert about the sacral, out-of-this-world qualities of the Cedar, one of my most loved note in perfumery. Visiting the real cedar wood is on my bucket list. I have sampled Abel scents and the sample of Green Cedar helped me to survive in the summer heat. I think it will be great in cold weather, too. Would love to win a full bottle of Green Cedar to extend that meditative pleasure.
    Thank you!

A gin martini note of juniper.” I could just flip my petticoat and submit to that amber. But instead I want the wood of GREEN CEDAR, the cleansing ritual of it, the breath, thanks for that poetry Robert. That has to be it. From USA, once California, now Kauai.

  • The review of Cobalt Amber picked up my interest-nice job Robert!
“Cobalt Amber, a contemporary riff on amber is akin to walking on a warm beach where the sand is dazzling white and powdery soft……cooling gin martini note of juniper, warmed by the inky depth of cacao and tonka, would not be out of place under an umbrella at an oceanfront resort, or strolling the quayside promenade on a balmy summers eve.”
Tnx Abel Perfumes and Cafleurebon for this draw.
Cobalt Amber is the one i’d like to win-for sure.

  • They each sound lovely! I’m impressed that they are all natural and not surprised about the winemaking background. Cobalt Amber sounds like a chameleon… And I like the natural woodiness of green and red.
