Parco 1923 (Luca Maffei) ~ New Perfume Review + Abruzzo National Park Draw

Founded as a refuge for several disappearing species of animals, The National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise is an untouched, paradisal haven of lakes, mountains, and woodland. Marsican brown bears and wolves roam amongst its rocky lookouts, and forests and wildflowers and shrubs grow in chaotic profusion. Using native plants and materials, Italian perfumer Luca Maffei has paid homage to the Park’s tumble of plants and rocky terrain in Parco 1923 EDT, a herbaceous fragrance that sings of open skies and verdant wilderness.

Parco 1923 opens with an expanse of contrasting green notes: the turpenic, piney smell of juniper butting up against the warm loaminess of moss and the aquaeous, bitter bite of celery. Then, a brilliant flower note cuts into the greenness like the trill of a flute over recorders. It registered as hyacinth to me for a moment before I realized that this is the laburnum. A tinge of honeysuckle joins in, heightening the sweetness.

The interplay of nectarous floral and earthy, verdant notes mirrors the cool-sunny contrast of the first few moments and lifts the fragrance into balance. I am reminded of other green florals, particularly Miller Harris Fleurs de Bois, with its arpeggio of bell-like florals and greenery. Parco 1923 hums along in this stage for a while before earthier notes pull the pine needle-flowery facets back.

As Parco 1923 wears, the woodsy, hay-like sweetness of broom begins to dominate and mineral notes peek through, as though we’ve hiked from lowlands up into the mountains. Celery comes forward a bit more, bringing the cooler aspects of the perfume into refrain like welcome shade. The leafy notes, a bit soapy now, are gently nudged aside by a chilly, flinty vein that recalls church flagstones. Some dry wood notes seep through now, too, bringing back a sense of warmth.

Luca Maffei weaves the keynotes of Abruzzo – its virgin beauty, ancient churches, its carpets of flowers baking in the sun, water racing over the lakeland rock into the woods – into a scent landscape. Parco 1923 is stirring and calming all at once, a perfect salve for hot, sticky days when mental vistas of wildflowers and icy lakes are calling you from your desk.

Notes: Juniper berry, angelica, wild celery, honeysuckle, laburnum, broom, iris, beech wood, tree moss.

  • This sounds so fresh and woody! I’ve never tried anything from this perfume house.

Where I live (in a gated community in Northern Pennsylvania) we have our own parks and lakes. My favorite is Elmwood Park, so I’d love to have a fragrance made for that location.

    I live in the USA.

  • I love the green scents inspired by wild nature and especially by forest. The note pyramid looks great as well as the the bottle in deep green color. The national park to be inspiration for a perfume? I would really want to try something tropical, wet and floral, so maybe one of the Indochina national parks like Khao Yai National Park – the oldest NP in Thailand. I have an address in Huston, TX

  • I like the note pyramid and the bottle is also nice, that classic shape and green color. I would love to sample this juice, thanks for the draw.

  • It sounds really old school. The bottle and description reminds me of the woody, green, barbershop fragrances like Acqua di Selva. But the note breakdown makes me think of Fahrenheit a little.
Im not really familiar with any particular parks. I’ve never gone camping or anything, so I cant suggest anything
    I’m in the US. Thanks

  • I love fresh floral green scents and the notes listed sounds a great perfume. I’d like another house to explore Central Park. Thanks for this great review! Ish NYC

I love that this fragrance is celebrating a protected space. Any attention that that be drawn to conservation of our wildlife is a good thing. While not specifically a park, I would love to see the Wisteria Tunnel at the Kawachi Fuji Garden in Japan interpreted. Thank you for the draw!

  • I love the evocative nature of this fragrance. I’ve long searched for something that successfully evoked a sense of nature. As for parks, I would be interested to see what could come of Killarney National Park in Ireland. Thanks for the review!

  • This description of Parco 1923 sounds amazing. I want to be there right now!
I would love a fragrance like the Blue ridge mountains in North Carolina. I live in the US. Thanks for the chance.

  • I’ve been wanting to try this one! I live in the Great Lakes area and enjoy the outdoors. I’d like to see a fragrance based on Sleeping Bear Dunes in Michigan

After I discovered one my favorite fragrances……Terra Mia, I have been paying attention to what Luca does. This sounds awesome. Stirring and calming all at once is a challenge to create. Love the nature photos for this article. I am lucky that my parents favorite places were national parks when I was growing up. I love that a portion of this will be donated to Abruzzo, so very cool!! I would choose my favorite national park which is Mesa Verde in Colorado. Thanks for the chance!!!

  • ooh, earthy and green and fresh, sounds lovely, and reminiscent of wide open skies! I’ve always loved the smell of summer rain on hot earth or pavement, and would love a scent that could remind me of that, either wearing it in the winter, or in the summer. perhaps Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon in summer, with the dry yet majestic views. thank you for the draw! in the US.

Juniper and hay remind me of my childhood in Italy. I live in USA now and would appreciate this memory. I just want to park in it and sleep and dream lucid dreams.

It was a joy to read about the Abruzzo National Park and see the photos. How beautiful! I love a anything with Juniper. I’d love to see how Badlands National Park would be interpreted into a perfume.

I would love tp see Glacier National Park turned into a fragrance. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the USA
