Mona Di Orio Les Nombres D’Or Musc (2010) + Celebrating Mona on her Birthday Draw

“Something needs to be said to describe my moonlight. Almost frost but softer, almost ash but wholer. Made almost of water, which has strictly speaking No feature, but a kind of counter-light, call it insight.”  ~ Alice Oswald, excerpt from her poem Full Moon

Mona wearing a carre etoile!!! rare photo

Beloved perfumer Mona Di Orio was born on July 19th, 1969 – the Cancer-Leo cusp (July 19-25), otherwise known as the Cusp of Oscillation. This concept of astrological interval bridging two signs, aka cusp – has been discussed and disputed by many, astrologers included: it presupposes that divergent characteristics of the two signs concerned may hold sway over one’s potential behavior. In the final analysis, we have the last say regarding self-mastery and realization, always. To believers, the Cusp of Oscillation is considered one of the most creative and influentially powerful cusps.  I am by nature an avid observer and data bank; in the memory palace spanning several decades, I’ve noted some common characteristics among folk born on this cusp. They differ wildly individually but for the qualities of creativity, complexity, and humor. To employ the vitality of sun and moon is no mean feat…

Rare photo of Mona di Orio courtesy of Jeroen Oude Sogtoen©

Reflecting upon Editor-in-Chief Michelyn Camen’s in-depth interview, (the last before her untimely passing), it feels so current; she and I both met Mona on the same day and engaged her in conversation at different times. Mona’s brilliant, underappreciated Amyitis had just become available; I purchased it promptly without a second thought. It was during the 2008 Sniffapalooza Spring Fling in New York City – the very same occasion where Michelyn and I first met. Mme. Di Orio and I found ourselves engrossed in discussion at Aedes De Venustas’s Victorian bandbox boutique in the Village. I was earnestly attempting to convey my admiration for/olfactory perceptions of Nuit Noire (2006), which I adored: it might as well have been named Bête Noire, it was so avant-garde and polarizing for its time. I noted privately the equine elegance of her aquiline nose and long neck; how fitting.

It was an extremely torrid afternoon in the souk; the horses had been ridden so hard that morning, tugging at the reins. The sweat from their hides upon the saddles suffused its atmosphere, heavy-laden with spice, precious woods and indolic blossoms. From the balcony above the windows were flung wide open and a fierce, breathing animalic aroma hung in the ether with pungent sweetness.” Mona faced me squarely, fixing me with an intense gaze: “That’s precisely what I had in mind”, she quietly remarked after a period of silence. “You understand.” Soon after she was engulfed by clamoring crowds. Mona appeared uncomfortable being in such close quarters, boxed-in, no exit – and it was evident that she was rising to the occasion. Her eyes at that moment recalled the French word farouche – untamed, shy. I think she would have preferred a little respite at that juncture, a glass or two of good wine and quiet conviviality or solitude, even. She felt saturated to me, and weary from ‘enforced intimacy’… We did not meet again, but the experience remains etched in memory.

On what would have been her 49th birthday, we consider Mona Di Orio Les Nombres D’Or MuscI feel it as Musc as Moondust. Its gossamer skein weaves tenderness in its wake, an entity of plumage and silver filament enmeshed with heliotrope – she who turns her violet countenance towards the sun. Powdery as the moondust of our imaginings must be, Musc is a perfume of consonance above all. Balance and delicacy reign in a dominion of pillowy florals and musks cocooned in tonka, enlivened by the spicy resinous addition of angelica. It could easily skew cloying in the hands of a lesser talent: heliotrope (with all its cherry/almond/fluffy facets) + tonka (hay, licorice, nutlike, sweet spice) can equal syrupy disaster, giving gourmand a bad name. Mona’s Musc treads the tightrope with aplomb; commences with sunny, cheerful clarion ebullience and good humor only to dry down to an ever-present aromatic moonlit murmur, a stealth fragrance over time. Mona Di Orio Les Nombres D’Or Musc never withdraws from your presence: an increase in body temperature, a flutter of clothing – and you are aware of it once again. It may be reactivated by an embrace (so much the better!) or proximity in tighter quarters, but it will refuse to suffocate you unless you choose to apply it indiscriminately (then it’s tea culpatime, and you bear the consequences of your own indiscretions). Perhaps it was from instinct, intuition which Mona birthed a fragrance reflecting both sun and moon: compassionate, wistful and full of dreams. Notes: neroli, angelica, rose, heliotrope, tonka bean absoluteprecious musks

Discovering Mona di Orio’s Amyitis some 8 years ago made me realise that there were still true artists in perfumery.
A friend that had travelled in Amsterdam had brought it back in Greece, and I felt sadness for the lack of such offerings in my home country at the time.
We are now blessed to be able to enjoy her creations worldwide, but the tragic loss of a young, sensitive, beautiful woman and brilliant perfumer will always bring a feeling of melancholy to me every time I smell her fragrances, even the most sunny ones; it’s a feeling I am not afraid of and that I embrace, it somehow adds even more poignancy to her creations.
Ida’s review was done in the poetic manner that Mona’s creations deserve and invite.
“Compassionate, wistful and full of dreams” seem to perfectly characterize Mona as a person, judging from what I’ve read about her, especially Ida’s account of their meeting above, and Michelyn’s interview of her a few months before her untimely passing.
I’d be happy to try Les Nombres D’Or Musc – any fragrance that can project compassion, wistfullness and encouragement to keep dreaming is a fragrance that I’d welcome in my life.
    I live in EU (France).
Thank you for the beautiful article and the generous draw.
    Happy birth anniversary, Mona.

  • Richard Potter says:

That picture of Mona is so lovely. She truly does look “wistful and full of dreams.” This is a wonderful review. This fragrance sounds like something I would love. All week I have been cocooned in Sweet Musk from Farmacia S. S. Annunziata. USA

  • mariannep says:

I love Ida’s poetic language in her reviews. It was such a sad day when I heard of Mona’s passing. Such a talent bringing wonderful creations to life. I wish that more of her earlier fragrances would be brought back in production. It is a hard pick but my favourite is Lux. I live in Sweden.

  • Wonderful artistic description of the scent (little difficult for not native speaker, but it is a chance to improve English vocabulary), I haven’t try any Mona’s perfumes yet. This Musk considering the noes and the description sounds to be great scent. I live in Poland.

  • I didn’t realize that Amytis was not well received when launched. It is my first Mona fragrance love. I have purchased some of the releases from shortly after her death and currently desire Bohea Boheme. There is a special aspect to all of her fragrances that is noted in this review. The dark/light contrast is evident in all her work. I live in the USA.

  • Sadly i’ve never tried any Mona di Orio perfume until now but this one sounds pretty good and i will love to give it a try. Thanks for the draw, i’m in the EU.

  • Monica Beaton says:

I love Ida’s reviews – they are lyrical and so descriptive – of both the artist and the fragrance. I too am a cusp baby – Cancer and Leo – a nurturer and a warrior – shadow and light. I have never tried any of Mona’s fragrances, but would love to try Les Nombres D’Or Musc. I live in Australia.

  • Thank you for your personal insight and this generous draw. Yes, sometimes a shared fleeting moment can capture an unforgettable precious memory. USA

  • Danu Seith-Fyr says:

Always the beginning, the small steps of mine made into the exquisite arena of artistic and crafted Perfumery will be graced eternally by this beautiful woman, I am so grateful. at a difficult time, I discovered the Les Nombres d’Or Collection and that as they say was that. To read of precious moments in her life shared by our Editor and Ida touched me deeply, emotions run deep. For even though I never met her, the fragrances that are a Presence in my Life are a legacy that is borne throughout the World.
Beauty manifest in all its forms has a name, Mona di Orio.

  • I loved the heartfelt review and remembrance of a very talented woman, gone too soon. The photographs and artwork are, as usual, perfect. I have sampled several of Ms. Di Orio’s scents. Thank you for the chance to own one! I am in the US.

  • Danu Seith Fyr says:

Thank you Michelyn , Ida and Cafleurebon for this remembrance and the draw.. I am at the bottom of the world in NZ.

  • what a lovely review, and homage, to Mona Di Orio…unfortunately I have not smelled any of her scents, but this review is so lovely, I will need to find a sample if I do not win…Ida is such a writer, I get a sense of her connection with her subject. Thank you for such a lovely review, and thank you Maison Mona Di Orio for such a lovely draw! in the US.

  • Gabriel Garcia says:

Never have tried it, but I’m quite impressed by Mona as to have been a supercreative person and all the inspiration behind this creations I must say that I am very attracted to musk all my life.
Would be nice to experience Mona once more.

  • These are touching and respectful words, thank you. I joined the game later, but meanwhile I see her Vétyver as one of the most elegant and refined from that category, it’s subtle yet fantastic. Violette Fumée is highly interesting, and my wife loves Dõjima (MMdO, but perfumer is Frerdrik Dalman). I’d love to win this one to Germany.

  • fazalcheema says:

Mona Di Orio Les Nombres D’Or Musc is favorite of Michelyn and could be described as floral musky that also has gourmand vibe. I have Mona di Orio discovery set as well as full bottle of Original Cuir in my collection. thanks for draw. I am in US

  • Harbinger says:

I really enjoyed reading Ida’s tribute to Mona and her description of Musc was amazing. I have wanted a bottle from this house for a while now. Thank you for this generous draw. i am in the US.

  • I love the angelica note. Would be happy to try this. Violette Fumée and Lux are faves. US

  • I have never had a chance to try any of Mona Di Orio perfume, where I live there is not any niche perfume stores unfortunately. But this brands sounds very nice and luxurious, and Les Nombres D’Or Musc sounds so wonderfully. I love the notes and the review. Thank you for the draw. I live in Europe.

  • I have tried one of Mona di Orio perfumes, Vanille. It is fantastic! The descriptions of the Sun and the Moon are beautiful. Wonderful tribute, Ida. I live in the US.

  • girasole638 says:

This is a lovely tribute to someone who was obviously a very special person. What a memorable experience, to have been able to meet Mona di Orio. Like Michelyn, Musc is my favorite scent from her house and I would be thrilled and honored to add it to my collection. Ida does a wonderful job of describing its beauty – soft, but yet tenacious, apparently simple and yet full of depth. I also love her Vanille and have sometimes thought of the two scents as sisters – one spicy and dark, the other soft and light. I have been cherishing decants of each, but both are on my list of scents I hope to own one day. Thank you for the tribute, review and draw. I’m in the US.

  • Awe, perfection Ida. Mona’s Musc treads the tightrope with aplomb; commences with sunny, cheerful clarion ebullience and good humor only to dry down to an ever-present aromatic moonlit murmur, a stealth fragrance over time. Mona Di Orio perfumes have been and always will be a kindrid in my collection. I’ve been drawn to them from the beginning. So grateful that Jeroen Oude Sogtoen is continuing on with her dream in the way he knows she would deeply appreciate. Thanks also for the draw… always so generous.

  • Sensational, really love the sun and moon description, suggesting that the creation must be really a comforting scent, as a lover of comforting scents with musc, vanilla, patchouli, incense, Mona’s Musc must be really good. My favorite from the house is Vanille. From Europe, Lithuania.

  • These pictures of Mona are so lovely. The notes are perfect for me. I haven’t tried anything from this line yet. From the US

  • Thank you Ida for this review about great Musc Mona di Orio and sweet, interesting memories about Mona di Orio. Pitty, that she is not with us(( I like Musc but find it more for woman- very feminine.
I like Mona’s Cuir- reach, complex, beautiful perfume.
    from Armenia

  • Ida’s review of Musc is superb as always; the way you describe the perfume is colourful and ardent. What touched me is the utter sadness one can feel hiding behind the words. Mme di Orio was a great perfumer, a true artist, and it is never easy to make peace with such a loss. DespinaVnt said it better than I could.

I’ve only got Lux, and I love it. I’d be grateful for this chance to try Musc. I live in Russia

  • I have been into niche for around 10 years now, and that journey started right around the time of her death, so I wasn’t aware of her impact on the Perfume world until it was too late. And still I haven’t explored her fragrances enough – barring a sample of Vanille that is currently sitting beside my sink. It is mostly depleted as I obtained it from Lucky Scent in my very first explorations into niche. But occasionally I open it and have a tiny whiff. It’s madness that I have not bought it yet. But there aren’t too many places to experience her perfumes here in Australia. I need to make the effort to go to the single store that sells them (Peony in Melbourne).
I too have been eyeing Bohea Boheme – for the tea note. I realize this was made after her death. What a tragic loss to have someone so talented leave us so young. What more she could have given to the world. I feel this way about Alexander McQueen and my favourite sci fi author Iain Banks. Sad days.
As for the Musc – well, I love a fluffy musk so much. That quality of it being there and then not, and getting occasional reminders of the comforting cloud you carry. M.Micallef’s Royal Muska has this quality and it is one of my absolute favourite fragrances.

Would love to win this draw. Thank you again. I am in Melbourne Australia

Love the notes and the presentation
    Miami Florida
    Thanks

  • I have luckily the possibility to visit the shop often because I live in Amsterdam. The perfums who Mona created are true gems. But now Fredrike create the perfums forteh house of Mona di Orio and I must say he’s doing such a good job…it’s not easy to do right to the creations of Mona di Orio herself…

I have a few perfums from Mona but my first “niche” love is the Eau Absolue with this perfume my love for niche perfum was born.
I love the photo’s from Mona in this review it looks to me that she lived into the 20’s…

Thanks for this draw…I live in the Netherlands.

  • amirpasha says:

The review is so comprehensive and great!! I have not had a chance to experience any of her creations but I’m looking forward to it after this review, CA, USA

  • No need to include me in the draw as I have this tenderness of a scent, I just wanted to thank you for this exquisite tribute to Mona, who, even though I never had the chance to meet, speaks so vividly to us through her scents, thank you Ida for your sensational review which opened another door of understanding Musc, and thank you for these unusual photos of Mona and the artwork! My favourites include Carnation, Oud Osmanthus and Musc.I do hope Oiro will be brought back , please, Jeroen!

  • I love the idea of such a soft musc that it could be described as moondust, especially one form Mona Di Orio. I have fallen in love with much of their work, but am particularly attached to Rose Etoile Hollande and Violette Fumee. I crave them and go to them for comfort. The rose I discovered when traveling to Vienna Austria (I bought my bottle at JB Filz) and it smelled like the dewy rose garden in the morning at Schonbrunn. I wish I had local shops that carried the collection here in DC.

  • I love Ida’s reviews, so artistically written, yet concise and very descriptive.

Ive never tried a Mona Di Orio perfume, but perhaps this draw will give me an opportunity to do so!
    I live in Europe.

  • Scentedwow1 says:

As always, Ida’s review sounds more like an ode to the perfume, a real story of a perfume life (read: development) through every single note. Such a poetic description and dedication to the beautiful powdery delicate floral Mona’s Musc which is , by the way, my favorite in the line with Vanilla following it on my love list.
    I’m in Switzerland.
    Thank you!

  • It’s comforting to see that you find Mme. Di Orio compelling as we do <3
The house is doing brilliantly these days, which is gratifying.
One can't help but wonder what sorts of projects she would be undertaking now if she were not taken so young?
May she be for a blessing, as my people say.

  • Lori Laws says:

Another great lyrical review by Ida! Mona’s death definitely was untimely and a shock to us all. I remember finding out about her death on Facebook. She was a truly talented perfumer and I loved that “Compassionate, wistful and full of dreams!” My favorites from her are: Vanille and Ambre. Let her legacy live on in the artistic perfumes that she created and she definitely left her mark on the industry. Thanks for the generous draw and I live in the US! 🙂

  • doveskylark says:

I feel Mona Di Orio will live forever along with her fragrant creations. I was touched by Ida’s tribute and quite floored by her description of Nuit Noire, my favorite Mona Di Orio perfume. I wish I had the ability to choose words like that to describe the feelings this perfume conveys to me.
    I live in the USA.

  • I loved reading this article, but what appealed to me the most is the beautiful pictures. God, Mona was so beautiful! And her profile is so elegant. I live in Canada, and I enjoy wearing the Suede de Suede fragrance. totally recommend that one, too. Thanks for the generous opportunity to win a beautiful fragrance.

  • jeremyn87 says:

I like that it seems to try to blend a lot of different smells which one would associate with the East. Animalic scents, mixed with dense and nutty aromas, flowers, and spices. Sounds multifaceted and complex.
I’m in the US. Never tried any from this house./ Thanks!

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

Heroes die young and MONA DI ORIO is indeed a hero who died in the year 2011. But she is still alive in perfumes & in many hearts.
The review of the perfume Mona Di Orio Musc is a tribute to Mona Di Orio on her birthday. Love the summary of perfume – compassionate, wistful and full of dreams.
Thanks for the draw and opportunity. Pakistan

  • I know quite a few Mona di Orio’s creation, but not Musc. I feel like this particular fragrance, by reading the review, was able to capture the soft, gentle personality of Mona whilst having an animalic touch to it. Some sort of ice and fire in a bottle.

My favourite from this house is Lux.

I am from EU. Thanks for the draw!

  • What a lovely tribute to the beautiful Mona di Orio, thank you Ida! My favorite perfume of the line (of which I need to try more) is Vanille. I am in the U.S.

  • I love very much Mona di Orio creations.
It is so sad thay we, and all perfumery world has lost great talanted perfumer as Mona.
I enjoyed this artice -both parts: about Mona and about Musc.
I like musc Mona Musc, very sexy and faminine, but I find it only for woman, so I prefer from Mona Vanille- great, beautiful, unusual smoky vaniile. BRAVO Mona!!

A lovely tribute for what could have been Mona di Orio’s birthday. Who knows what creations she could have been launching these days, but the house is doing great an carries on with her ideas and dreams.
A wonderful selection of photographs and artwork, too.
A personal favorite of mine is Ambre from the Les Nombre D’Or collection.
Thank you for a heartfelt article and a generous giveaway.

Personally i really like Vetyver , but my 10ml decant is almost gone.
