Velvet & Sweet Pea’s Purrfumery Eze (Laurie Stern) Review + Soaking Up The Sun Draw

A Lane Near Arles, Vincent Van Gogh 1888

While much of the US has spent the last few days locked in the frigid embrace of Old Man Winter, I have been soaking up the sun on the hillsides of the French Riviera, kissed by lemon and lavender scented breezes of Laurie Stern of Velvet  & Sweet Pea’s Purrfumery Eze.

In fact, I woke up this morning with no heat in our house; it was 3 degrees below zero outside, and the water pipes had frozen overnight. My husband was understandably frantic, but I had a secret weapon-Velvet & Sweet Pea's Purrfumery Eze. I sent my husband to my mom's for his morning ablutions, and settled in to enjoy my "Mediterranean-Vacation-in-a-Bottle" as I waited for the pipes to (hopefully!) thaw and the HVAC cavalry to arrive. Owner and natural perfumer Laurie Stern took both name and inspiration for her 2016 release from the magical perfume village of Eze, perched high above the French Riviera.  I have never been to the Cote D' Azur, but Laurie has imbued her fragrance with such a sense of place that I am immediately transported there; a drop on each wrist and suddenly I'm on a sun-drenched garden terrace, enjoying a glass of homemade limoncello.

Lavender is growing between the flagstone pavers at my feet, and jasmine has her way with the rosebushes surrounding the garden, then clambers up the stucco walls of the villa behind me. Somewhere off on the distance, I hear Sheryl Crow playing, reminding me to soak up the sun, look up when I'm feeling down and lighten up already.

Laurie Stern planted this garden of fragrance in a bed of what she calls the "amber, healing warmth" of Labdanum rock rose, and I think that its sweet, earthy facets are what give Velvet & Sweet Pea’s Purrfumery Eze such an incredibly realistic feeling of being outdoors. Labdanum is also known to have soothing properties. In fact, she makes a conscious effort to imbue all her perfumes with ingredients specifically included not just for the beauty they add to the fragrance, but also to support your spirit.  Eze is joyous and uplifting, as well as calming.  If winter has overstayed its welcome in your life,  Velvet & Sweet Pea’s Purrfumery Eze would be the perfect antidote, and I think it's a perfect summer accessory for our friends in the southern hemisphere.

Disclosure: My review is based on a sample I received from Laurie as part of an order I placed last year. I wouldn't have shared it with you if I didn't love it.

NOTES: lemon, lavender, rose geranium, myrtle, jasmine, labdanum.

Velvet & Sweet Pea’s Purrfumery fragrances are 100% natural and certified cruelty-free. Velvet & Sweet Pea’s Purrfumery Eze is  from the Kittyliscious collection, newly packaged and also carried at Ave Parfum

Art Direction~ Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief: Tammy’s review of Velvet & Sweet Pea’s Purrfumery Eze instantly brought to mind the later works of Post-Impressionist Artist Vincent Van Gogh which captured great natural beauty and depth of emotion becoming more vivid than his earlier years.

I love lavender and lemon. Simple as that. I soak up the sun whenever and wherever I can. I would say. Any beach will suffice. Jim in freezing cold DC.

  • This little roll-on sounds like a perfect aromatherapy tool for when I need a mini-vacation in a far-away place…lucky for me, I can soak up the sun in my own backyard, but this seems like a dream scent! I am in the US.

  • Since I’m from Russia I can’t qualify for the giveaway, but I wanted to say how pleased I am with your choice of Vincent’s paintings! Will keep an eye on Purrfumery Eze, they sound delightful.

  • Thank you so much Tammy for your wonderful thoughts on Eze!I traveled to Eze when I was a young hippy 40 years ago and was visiting the perfumeries in Grasse, never knowing I would become a perfumer. I have always wanted to recreate the scents of the Mediterranean, and this is it for me! It was a carefree time and you have captured that here! Great images too, Michelyn! Merci boucoup to you both! XOXO~Laurie

  • I’ve always wanted to try something from the Kittylicious collection! I just love the packaging. This scent sounds so fresh and feminine. I love that the company is 100% natural and certified cruelty-free. My favorite place to soak up the sun is down at the Jersey shore – particularly Belmar, NJ.
I live in the US (Pennsylvania)

  • Sounds like a great House. First time hearing of them. Seems like a nice fresh and sweet perfume. Thanks for reviewing and for the giveaway

  • That is a list featuring some of my very favorite notes, and those pictures take me to a place I’d love to be right now. I have a flacon of Laurie’s JAsmine, Dawn & Dusk. Her perfumes are like healing ointments as well as smelling beautiful. I wouldlove to visit her shop one day. Thanks for the review. USA

  • The Mediterranean is exactly what I need in this mid-west winter – I know how Tammy feels. My favorite sun spot is the Red Sea – so calm and warm and clear. I am always on the hunt for all-natural perfumes, so I was pleased to read this review and keeping my fingers crossed. From the US.

Lavender and lemon – they’re a classic combination but they don’t solely have to be the basis of colognes and fougeres. Basing them in a rock rose is such a Mediterranean smell that even thinking how it smells pulls me right out of today’s mid-Atlantic weather.

  • Lavender reminds me of France and staying with a family on an exchange program in high school, so this note will always have a place on my shelf. and lemon, just love that as well. On another note, our furnace started burning oil on Christmas day, so we survived on the oven heat (from baking) and our (very inefficient) wood fireplace, until service could come out the following day! in the US. and thank you for the draw!

This review made me seriously consider visiting the Cote d’Azur. I never knew there was a perfume village called Eze. I really love perfumes that can support the spirit. My favourite sunspot is Brazil. The entire country.

  • I love the smell of lemon in the summer. This sounds absolutely gorgeous. To be transported to the Cote d’Azur in the middle of winter would be wonderful Thanks for the draw. I’m in the USA

  • Ooooh, lemon and lavender makes for such a simple, elegant, and effortless fragrance! Combined with labdanum for longevity, this would be perfect to wear when hosting a cozy barbecue or garden party. My sun spot is in my backyard, where I like to read with my dog lounging next to me. I am in the USA, thanks for the draw!

  • I too have never been to the Cote D’ Azur, but transport to a sun-drenched garden terrace this time of year where certainly has great appeal! Lemon is my go-to scent when I am suffering from poor mood brought on by below zero temperatures and other seasonal misery, such as right now where I live. My favorite place to enjoy the warmth of summer is anywhere under a swaying palm tree, even the image makes me happy and hopeful. I have not heard of this perfumer, but their scents sound fun and I will check them out. I live in the US and thank you for this chance.

I can’t say I’ve ever tried Velvet & Sweet Pea’s Purrfumery fragrances, but I wouldn’t mind trying some of this lovely fragrance as I soak up the sun in my Louisiana, USA backyard! I think it would be the missing touch to a perfect sunny day! It sounds wonderful! xx

  • Love the Van Gogh! Beautiful addition to this review. I lean towards citrus, rose, and jasmine perfumes, i know I would love this! I enjoyed Tammy’s journey to the Cote, I could almost see myself there as well had I not just opened the door (to freezing cold and snow). What I liked best about this though was Tammy’s comment that she would not share the review if she did not love the perfume. That really strikes me as a recommendation with meaning behind it.
Thank you for this (beautiful, sunny sounding) draw. I’m in the US. Thanks!
