Tonatto Profumi Palosanto Review (Diletta Tonatto) 2018 + Find Some Comfort Here Draw

Feel by Daniel Ablitt

Palo santo, or holy wood, is having its moment. This African tree, with distinctive milky-licorice smell, has been cropping up in a diverse range of artistic perfumes over the last year. Tonatto Profumi is the latest to build a fragrance around the warm, creamy aroma of palo santo, producing a limited edition of 200 bottles of eau de parfum and home fragrance that use a generous amount of pure palo santo perfume oil. In the hands of nose and Creative Director Diletta Tonatto,Tonatto Profumi Palosanto is the fragrance of the quiet at the center of a storm: lactonic, mellow, calming. This is perfume that seems magically to work as both sophisticated scent and gentle restorative.

Creative Director Diletta Tonatto

Ms.Tonatto explains her choice of this ancient wood for her line’s new fragrance: “The ancient history of the usage of palo santo for both purifying the space as well as the body and mind led us to want to respect and maximize the potential of this essence. The simple structural composition of Palosanto is designed to reassure … like an olfactory meditation.”

And reassure it does. It feels like a rivulet of warm water going on, giving an illusion of gentle heat spreading on the skin. It is instantly comforting, its lactonic, roasty quality echoing nursery smells of milk and toast. At once, the creamy woodiness of palo santo is evident: that spike of licorice adding depth and modernity. The presence of sandalwood is also detectable after the first few moments; smooth-edged and a touch medicinal. The overall effect is meditative in the way of incense, yet with none of the headiness of frankincense or elemi.

As Palosanto develops, the creamy quality subdues in favour of denser wood notes, which come out in layers. Somewhere in the middle, a slim ribbon of coolness trickles through, not immediately discernable as mint that cuts the opacity of the sandalwood-palo santo accord. As it dries down, the notes come into complete harmony with each other. There is nothing hard-edged or heavy in the fragrance, but it does have substance. I detect a nod to Tonatto Profumi Palosanto elegant cousin Apeiron, in the retro-violet note I pick up towards the end.

There are a small handful of perfumes to which I turn when the imprint of the world seems too present, the need to retreat as pressing as thirst: DSH Perfumes Axis Mundi, Coty L’Origan, Jacomo No. 2. To this tiny group I now add Tonatto Profumi Palosanto. Its milky, anisic smoothness has no hard edges. It is comfortable and without familiarity, cosseting without losing its sophistication. It is an elegant elixir for grown-ups who long for respite. When your body is weary, or your soul needs a salve, Palo Santo is a lovely, reflective restorative. If we could imbibe a potion that distills how walking through a small cloud of Tonatto’s new fragrance feels, all would be right with the world.

 Notes: Mint, palo santo, sandalwood.

Disclaimer: Palosanto provided by Tonatto Profumi – many thanks. My opinions are my own.

Palo Santo has been getting a lot of buzz lately but never reallly got to know how this wood is special until I read how it inspired Ms. Tonatto to use it to create a special limited edition fragrance in her line. Lauryn opened more ideas what Palo Santo really is as an element in the fragrance world. I only know and tried Palo Santo by Carner Barcelona as a Palo Santo frag but have not really tried any other including from Tonatto Profumi scent. My always to-go comforting scent is Gucci Pour Homme II. That tea accord really relaxes me. Never Fails. San Diego

  • I find interesting in “Palosanto” the milky aspect. I never had a perfume with that character, so I want to experience it.
From Tonnato fragrances, I smelled “Amir” a very long time ago in a shop and I know that I liked it.
I don’t use perfume as a comforting measure.
I live in the E.U. Thank you.

  • Palo Santo is one of my favorite woody notes. MikMoi used it beautifully in Lingua Franca, which is one of my favorite comfort fragrances. I haven’t tried anything from this line but I shall make an effort to do so, especially this one.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

I love both palo santo and sandalwood (burning palo santo makes me calmer than anything else these days), and I love the idea that it is cut with a freshness and sharpness of mint…but just a bit. What an evocative and contemplative review! I have not tried many Tonatto scents except Oltre which I found really hyperrealistic in its impression of the sea and greenness together, but not comforting to wear…a bit discordant. I had huge respect for the scent though! I’d love to try this. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • I don’t know what palo santo smells like, but the description of creamy woodiness sure looks quite similar to sandalwood, which I love. So this one looks very interesting and I’d love to try it. I haven’t tried any Tomato Profumi fragrances yet, but would like to discover them.
For comforting scents I usually go for vetiver fragrances. Thanks for the draw! I’m in EU.

  • I like the calming effects that Lauryn mentions, and always liked the lactonic quality of Le Feu D’Issey (I only have one bottle left, so I dole it out very carefully). when I want comforting in the winter, I go for DKs Black Cashmere, and in the summer Fragonard’s Orange Blossom. I don’t know that I have any palo santo frags, but i’m all for creamy woodiness in the winter, same for Tonatto Profumi, but as soon as I checked out their website I noticed Fior d’Arancio. Thank you for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • I loved the Palo Santo used in OO’s Hamsa recently, so I’m interested in trying more palo santo wood scents. I love milky and anisic and minty notes in perfume as well. I haven’t yet tried anything by Tonatto. I live in the US.

  • First thank you cafleurebon and tonatto for a fantastic giveaway .

Great article learned a bit about the holy wood and its calming restorative properties.I love sandalwood Im not sure if Ive ever smelled palo santo but definitely would love to try this fragrance has great notes and qualities i like in a fragrance .

I havent had the pleasure of trying any fragrances from these house yet but will definitely give them a try .

One of the fragrances I wear when I wanna relax is Sahara Noir or Plum Japonais these two Tom Fords are my personal chill out frags.

    I live in Canada.
    Thanx again for giveaway !

Thank you for the thoughtful review and generous draw! I haven’t tried any Tonatto, but after perusing all of them I’d love to try Sandalo Per Teti and Anena as well as Palosanto. Three words that Lauryn used… lactonic, roasty, and sandalwood… ahhhhhh. Sounds like an immediately calming experience. This on is going on my try-list. Thank you so much! I’m in the USA.

  • Malka Gittel bas Reuven says:

I’ve tried none of the line before, but this sounds, from the review, so… warm and cozy. Living in the snowy cold snap, I could use something warm, cozy, and delicious fumes to go with my hot tea. I feel cozier just reading about it!

  • I’ve never tried anything from Tonnato Profumi line but this one “Palosanto” got all my attention. I love the smell of pure palosanto, i have and use at home palosanto wood, most of the time burning little parts in my room. It’s just a super creamy fantastic scent that always give you a nice calm and warm mood. I live in the EU, thanks for this great draw.

  • Roger Engelhardt says:

I have 2 fragrances with Palo Santo as a leading note, Become the Shaman from DSH perfumes and Hamsa from Olympic Orchids.
Both are wonderful, and, I became aware of them from your Talisman series! I also have a piece sent to me by Christi Meshell from the House of Matriarch. That reminds me, need to get a 15ml of Antimony !!
My favorite from Laura Tonatto was Rei, which unfortunately is no longer available, much to my dismay. Great scent!
Would love another Palo Santo scent in my collection!
    I am in the USA.

  • The references to other fragrances help a lot. My comforting notes are around smoky wood without sweetness, but I bet my better half would smell marvelous in this one! German address.

  • Chocolate Marzipan says:

It’s the notes of this fragrance that appeal to me as I really enjoy palo santo. I have never tried any perfumes from this line but they all sound lovely. Palosanto sounds like it would be a perfect comfort scent. I reside in the USA.

  • Enveloping creamy woods sounds so good. These are the kinds of woods I like, not the harsh and sharp woods oft found in ‘modern’ blends for example CdG….I mean, I don’t mind CdG but it can all get a bit much.

Please enter me in the draw, I am from Melbourne Australia

  • I very like the notes of this fragrance. The base of the review, it sound wonderfully. I have never tried anything of Tonatto Profumi. But I very like the scent of Palo Santo. My comforting scent is L`Artisan Parfumeur Seville a l`Aube. Thank you for the draw. I live in Europe.

  • Chazas, Karolis says:

The first thing that interests me is Italy and their perfumery, I love Italian tradition, love and passion in everything.
In my country Tonatto Profumi is not available at least I never found it, yet I am familiar with one fragrance, that I really like and I got to know it from my colleague. Ambery, Smoky dense fragrance, I really liked it so he gave me a 15ml decant, amazing fragrance Amir is.

Palosanto really interests me as if I am correct Palo Santo means Palo Santo wood, a sacred wood essence which is natural aromatic and were used for centuries as aromatic incense for purifying. Easily understandable why it would be a comforting scent, I myself love soft, creamy, smoky incense fragrances.

I want to mention a couple fragrances that are at least for me are very personal and comforting:
    Noir Exquis by L`Artisan Parfumeur
    Tobacco Vanille by Tom Ford
    Ambre Lumiere by Molinard
    Tabac Rouge by Phaedon
    Eau des Baux by L`Occitane
    1888 by Xerjoff
    1861 Naxos Xerjoff
Midnight in Paris by Van Cleef & Arpels

Palosanto sounds like a stunning yet rare composition, really want to try it as I really like Amir, would be incredibly nice if Tonatto Profumi would have more availability in Europe.

Thank you for an amazing article and generous gift, my best of wishes from EU, Lithuania.

  • I don’t think I know how palo santo smells, but with a warm creamy aroma as it is described, I should like it. The fact that there are only 200 bottles produced makes it more desirable, as it is a limited edition.
I surely like to see how palo santo smells and hoping for the best! Thanks for the draw, I live in the EU.

  • What makes palo santo appealing to me base on Lauren’s review is the part where it mentions: “It feels like a rivulet of warm water going on, giving an illusion of gentle heat spreading on the skin. It is instantly comforting, its lactonic, roasty quality echoing nursery smells of milk and toast. At once, the creamy woodiness of palo santo is evident:….”
I love this creamy woodiness in palo santo and I would love to experience its effect on ones skin. I still had no chance to experience any Tonatto perfumes!
My favorite palo santo smell is Tobacco Vanille by Tom Ford!
    I live in EU.

  • fazalcheema says:

Lauryn is right. Palo Santo seems to be having a moment, especially, among niche fragrances such as Aedes and Carner besides Tonatto. I am intrigued because Tonatto Profumi Palosanto has prominent palo santo note and the perfume is warm and creamy. It also incorporates sandalwood note that I enjoy as well. Thanks for the generous draw. my favorite from Tonatto is Albi which I have a full bottle of. I am in the US.

  • I have not had the pleasure of experiencing a Tonatto Profumi fragrance before but Palosanto sounds beautiful. I appreciated the detailed review of the fragrance. What sounds appealing to me is the mention of milky, creamy and lactonic notes in the fragrance. Milk notes can be so calming and yet luxurious as well giving a richness to a perfume. It made me think of Matin Calin with its wonderful sweet milk notes! I think the milkiness combined with woods sounds exquisite. I enjoy perfumes that soothe. One I enjoy for this is actually Clarins  Eau Ressourçante! It would be very special to have a chance to experience this fabulous sounding perfume x

  • Palo Santo a fragrance of the quiet at the center of a storm: lactonic, mellow, calming. Milky-licorice and woods sounds just divine! Always looking for a pleasant Licorice fragrance! One of my comforting scents is Illusions Noires Au Masculin Eau de Minuit Lolita Lempicka… which is a licorice fragrance… I know nothing from this house as of yet… I do live in the US… THANK YOU!

  • I’m not familiar with this house but do love palo santo. My favorite palo santo perfume to date is DSH Perfumes Become the Shaman which was part of Calfeurebon’s Talisman Project. I’m in the US, thank you for the generous draw!

  • I still haven’t tried a fragrance with palo santo, but creamy woods and mint sound like a very interesting combination. My favorite Tonatto fragrance is Plaisir. I’m in the US, and I reach for Tauer Au Coeur du Desert when I need comforting. Thanks for the drawing.

  • Love palo santo! I was first introduced to it last year through CaFleureBon with the Talisman Project. The first palo santo fragrance I tried was MikMoi Lingua Franca (which is sooo nice) and I’ve been seeking the note out since. I even purchased some wood to burn and have received compliments when people come over. Like Lauryn said – it has the soothing aspects of incense but without any headiness. For me, mint and sandalwood are two of the most comforting scents, so I can just imagine how dreamy this fragrance smells with the addition of creamy palo santo. I’m not familiar with Tonatto Profumi, but I’m now eager to try Palosanto (and Apeiron as well!) In the US. 🙂

  • Lately there has been a lot going on in my life and definitely my soul needs some salve. I find that DSH Refresh helps lift my spirits on gloomy days, and perhaps it is the mint aspect to thank, which it would have in common with Palosanto. I have not yet tried anything from this house. As per palo santo the ingredient, it is present in Olympic Orchids Hamsa, which I like. I live in the US and thanks for this chance.

  • I am not familiar with this perfume house and just barely with the palo santo note. Indeed I can see it starts to take of and to be a trend the palo santo note and I’d love to see how they’ve done it here, because from the description it looks rather interesting. Comforting fragrance…maybe Incense Oud by Kilian?
    I live in Europe.

  • Haven’t smelled Palo Santo and This one from Tonatto Profumi sounds
Interesting. A creamy woody smell maybe. Nice to get a try
    Thanks for the review. U.S

  • Beautiful review!!!
This perfume sounds very interesting. I think, I will like perfume with creamy woodiness, sandalwood and “ribbon of coolness” trickled through.
I am not familiar wit Palo Santo perfumes and Tonatto Prpfumi.
The one of fragrances I wear when I wanna relax is Dia Man Amouage.
    from Armenia

  • My wife burns palo santo wood in our home, and we both enjoy it immensely. I’ve been hoping to capture that slightly smoky woodsy vibe in a fragrance but haven’t been so lucky yet. I tried Santo Incienso by The Different Company, and it’s enjoyable, but it was very linear on my skin (albeit pleasant). Antimony by House of Matriarch is also quite nice. I have not tried Tonatto Profumi before. At this point, when I need a comforting perfume, I tend to favor patchouli. Among my favorites are Patchouli Nobile by Nobile 1942, Classic Patchouli by Von Eusersdorff, and Patchouli by Lorenzo Villoresi.

  • Tom Schroeder says:

I enjoy woody fragrances, and Tonatto Profumi Palosanto sounds lovely. I would like to know what Palo Santo smells like. But it is the comfort aspect of the fragrance as Lauryn describes that most appeals to me. I tend to go to vanilla and smoke fragrances when I need comfort–perhaps it is the associations with home comforts of baking scents and relaxing by the fireplace in a safe environment that feels so good. So discovering another one that Lauryn finds comforting would be wonderful.

  • Thank you all so much for your kind words. Tonatto is a house everyone should get to know, and Palosanto is a lovely addition!

  • I tend to pick wood fragrances , although I am not familiar with the palo santo. Lauryn’s review describes a soft and flowing fragrance that emphasizes its comforting aspect. I am not familar with Tonatto Profumi, but this would be a fragrance that would be so interesting to try. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the USA

  • Unfortunatly, I’ve never tested Tonatto Profumi.
But I liked Lauryn’s decription- licorice , creamy woody perfume with a touch of gentle freshnes.
I know Palo Santo Carner Barcelona.
My comforting perfume is Sephane Hubert L. Soleilde Jeddah.
    now I live in Armenia

  • Sleepylizard says:

I wear Palo Santo beads daily, so a perfume to complement these would be lovely! This could be my new comfort scent, wonderfully described by Lauryn.
My favourite comfort scent of late is Marshmallow by MOR.
    Thank you Tonatto Profumi

  • doveskylark says:

Lauryn’s description of the notes in Palosanto sound exactly what I get when I burn the sticks. I love the coolness, the wood, and the subtle medicinal qualities of palo santo.
When I need comfort, I wear Lanvin’s Avant Guard.
I haven’t tried anything from this line.
    I live in the USA.

Thanks for the review & what a great description in the end of the review for a perfume with only 3 notes Tonatto Profumi Palo Santo. Never tried any of the fragrance from Tonatto Profumi. For seeking comfort & relaxation I wear any perfume.
Thanks for the generosity & opportunity. Pakistan

  • I am not familiar with this line but this fragrance sounds clean, yet warm and earthy. I love mint and sandalwood.
    I live in the U.S.

  • Literally everything about this review appeals to me. Milky? yes. Woodsy? yes. Incense? yeah….Relaxing, quiet, a retreat from the jangling world? yeah baby sign me UP. Just tried a sample of Freudian Wood and well yeah this is apparently a niche that needs filling. It is what I never knew I always wanted.

Palo Santo sounds very cool but I don’t know that I’ve ever tried it.
Amir is the only one I think I have tried, I liked it a lot but it felt heavier. That logo is awesome btw!

Thank you for the review and draw

  • I enjoyed reading about the meditative aspects of this fragrance. I have never sampled Tonatto Profumi nor this accord, but I do enjoy meditative scents that calm and ground me. Tauer’s LADDM is excellent for that. I live in the US and thanks for the draw!

  • My favorite phrase from the review is this: “when the imprint of the world seems too present, the need to retreat as pressing as thirst.”

Usually I pay attention to the list of notes, or the imagery they conjure (Parisian couture? A shade garden?). I love how this review focuses on the role of scent in contemplation

I’m increasingly turning to using fragrance for both comfort and mindfulness as work, and Profusion Palomino sounds like an ideal tonic.

I live in the US, thanks for the opportunity to try this!

  • Gah! Profumi Palosanto, my tablet has the WORST autocorrect function. I’m not entirely sure I would hate a Cologne called Profusion Palomino though, I bet it would be an aromatic leather.

  • oldandsmelly says:

I love palo santo and Lauryn was correct in describing it as a comforting scent, but i would describe it also as protective. I do not has a favourite Tonatto Profumi scent yet, this may be it, would love to try. I live in the US and for comfort I wear Bulgari Omnia original or L’Artisan’s Dzing.
