The Art and Magic of Essence: Talismanic Perfumes + Hoodoo, Magick and Alchemy Draw

talisman perfume

Talismans are by definition objects that create magical or miraculous effects. We have been making talismans since the dawn of time, magical amulets and charms, tribal fetishes, and objects that protect or grant power to the owner of the object. Over thousands of years the process of making magical objects or talismans became a science. These sciences have been well preserved and continue to be practiced. In old traditions as well as new, talismans continue to be made following ancient esoteric sciences and philosophies.

A relatively new yet also very ancient practice of creating talismanic perfumes has started to surface within the perfuming community. My partner also a perfumer and incense artist, Catamara Rosarium coined the term Talismanic perfume/perfuming three years ago while describing her process in an interview. The term has stuck and has become a style and fashion of perfuming. It has also become way of describing perfumes created for the intention of being used as a magical object, ie a talisman.

What are these talismanic perfumes, what makes them a talisman, how is this not a clever marketing ploy, or some sort of snake oil. Some will say that magic isn’t real, that there is no such thing and that no matter what one says or does, to make the perfume talismanic it’s hocus pocus… but I’m not writing for that audience. The majority of the world still believes in magic, and the power of talismans, those that do not, are actually the small minority, anthropologically speaking, and this vast majority in my audience here.

So what makes it a talisman instead of just a perfume, one might say that it is how it is related to, and what one does with it, that makes it magical. The old classic Perfume Florida water made by Murray and Lanman for example has been worked with by spiritists and shamans to name a few, for magical purpose since nearly the civil war. Murray and Lanman however where not making a talismanic perfume, they were making a good old fashioned toilet water that was marketed to make you feel clean and upbeat. It was the shamans, rootworkers and santeros that made it magical, with how they used it, and how they related to it.

The old classic perfume Tabu by Jean Carles in 1932 is still to this day worked with in Peruvian San Pedro cactus shamanry, and perfumerismo practice. I can guarantee Jean Charles had not made this perfume to be put into a magical bath for cleansing witchcraft. Or poured into a tobacco tea that would then be drunk through the nose by shamans to raise their spiritual power. Yet curiously… this is how it’s still being used even today.

Once people saw what could be done with perfumes not made intentionally as a talisman it did not take long for them to start making ones that were, and discover even older practices in perfuming that had been abandoned, lost or were just amazingly obscure. Indigenous peoples had long been simmering aromatic plants in water for their healing, and magical effects, many of these practices quickly translated over to the making of perfumes.  Today we find a vast array of perfumes just marketed specific to spiritual traditions based off of these older traditions. A classic example being Agua de Ruda, made with Rue, a plant classically associated with protection and benediction. But we also have new perfumers who are combining other lost arts and esoteric sciences with the production of a new generation of talismanic perfumes. Talismanic Perfumes that have their roots deep in history and tradition. These perfumes are being made in correspondence to the plants used in perfuming and their traditional magical uses in folklore, as well as alchemy, traditional witchcraft and much more. Some of these perfumes are formulated, as were incenses in the days of old, dedicated to ancient gods, stars, planets, spirits etc.

scrying using perfume to see the future or for proohecy

A great example is the Rosarium Blends perfume Pan. Perfumer Catamara Rosarium created this perfume dedicated to the Greek God Pan with essential oils from plants classically related to the Deity Pan. She also added a maceration of a stone taken from Pans cave/temple on mount Olympus, collected by a friend who pilgrimaged there.  This perfume is made during symbolic astrological and lunar times, all relating to the ancient deity pan. At the very least these perfumes are an amazing ritualistic art form, even if one is of the global minority that does not believe in magic and the miraculous use of talismans.

There are several new perfumers out there you should definitely check out if you are interested in Talismanic Perfumes, www.rosariumblends.com specializes in perfume esoterica, another producer of talismanic perfumes made according to both hoodoo traditions and Peruvian curanderismo practice is a Chicago based company www.vodoustore.com light and lovely colognes, and of coarse my own perfume house, http://www.houseoforphues.com/.

  • Thanks for sharing these three perfumers with us. I’ll certainly be checking them out. You have a deft hand with potentially volatile subjects, and I’m not referring to the scents.

I often wonder why humans have such a tendency to underestimate the power they possess. I believe we have far greater influence over our world and in our lives than any of us thinks. I also believe that those who do not believe in magic are blissfully unaware they’re unwittingly practicing it all the time. We suffuse everyday inanimate objects with intent, and hope, and traces of us all the time.

Also, I love to see how other people write or convey meaning when focusing on some of the less-concrete aspects of our world. It often makes me consider a new perspective or fresh insight. So thank you for that!

I am especially fascinated by the ‘off-label’ uses of perfumes that you mention here. I’m in the US. Thank you.

  • I didn’t realize so many classic creations like Tabu and Florida perfume have been used for spiritual purposes. it is really an eye-opener. i guess this shows perfumes really have a certain power over us and how they are in a sense, magical sensory experiences.

my most magical experience might have been a visit to Niagara Falls because it was really one of a kind experience seeing the force of mother nature.. thanks for the lovely draw. I am in the US.

I have liked all three brands on Facebook.

  • I think that these 3 perfumes are very interesting. I have liked Rosarium Blends, Vodou Store and House of Orpheus on Face Book. When I was a child, with my friends we often played, that we are wizards, and we made magical things from wood, flowers and grass. That was so funny.
    I live in Europe.

  • I love the idea of perfume as a talisman- I very much believed in magic when I was younger, and I guess some of that held over. I’m in the US.

  • Love this article- thank you. I grew up with Florida Water used this way and I wondered how that has come about. I love the scent itself.
I think it’s a very primal urge to create talismans- people do in different ways. I love the idea of using perfume for this.

  • Shamanism and curanderism have always intrigued me but I had never really considered that to go with fragrance although the commonalities between both realms are absolutely obvious – especially when one considers aromatherapy and the like.

I gave each of the Facebook pages a visit and ‘like.’

By the way, the House of Orpheus url is misspelled within the article. Just a heads up. 😉

I am in the US. Thanks for the draw.

  • This is amazing and I had never heard of this before but of course the ritualistic element so befits the perfume craft. It totally makes sense of course as is revealed in the review. I enjoyed reading about the mainstream brand Tabu having this background and inclination. A most enjoyable read and thank you for the links which I will be exploring. I am in the US and thank you for the generous draw.

  • I never really thought of perfumes as being talismen but it is true – they are magical. In the simplest manner just how a small dab or spray can transform you shows that this is true. Fascinating to read more. I’m in the US, thanks for the draw!

  • I found this to be a very interesting article! I have always had and worn talismans! I also choose my gemstone jewelry based on what mystical properties the stones possess, and acquire them as needed.
I am excited to check out the perfumers mentioned here!
I live in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • I love the idea of magic and perfumery. I sometimes feel magical when I find a fragrance that suits me perfectly!

    I am in Canada thanks!

  • I’m attracted to the idea of talismans in general and I use scents as an integral part of my magickal practice. I’m one of those rootworkers who use Bay rum and Florida water in my work. I also like to sprinkle an impromptu mixture of the herb I’m working with over the censer.

  • I believe in magic and the power of sacred symbols, burning incense and why not perfumes? I loved the idea of Pan perfume inspired by the ancient Greek God Pan made with essential oils from plants related to god Pan and the use of a stone taken from Pans temple on mount Olympus.
My story related to magic: I believe in the power of numbers (ancient Greeks did put a great importance in the effective power of numbers ie Pythagoras theorem) and the number that affects my life for sure is number 5 that stores unique and magical power in many life events of mine.
I have also liked the pages mentioned above in Facebook.
I live in EU, and I thank you for this magical review and draw as well.

  • Christine Breakstone says:

The attention and intention involved in making magical and sacred objects, including perfume has always fascinated me. Perfume has always been magical to me as it immediately shifts the mind and focus to different memories , places and mood. I like to use flower essences or the extra mother essence in my bath and spritzers as well as using sacred symbols and crystals . Thank you for the inspiring article. Liking the FB pages. I live in the US.

  • I’ve wanted to try Pan 1 for some time and thank you for this post highlighting some additional scents to seek out.
I won’t try to write extensively about it here but I have had the privilege of experiencing Las Pozas de James on a full moon during an enormous midnight thunderstorm. Watching the serene beautiful series of pools turn to a raging torrent which shook the hillside and then, by morning return clean and clear is something I won’t soon forget.
I’m in the U.S. thank you.

  • excellent! i love how you point out the anthropological FACT that magic is alive and well. how can it not be? It always gives me a chuckle to hear “sane and rational” people deny magic exists, yet still wear their favorite baseball cap to golf in. (here’s your sign.)

What lengths have been gone to to embue these perfumes with intention!! a macerated rock from Pan’s temple?!

Perfume is a magic cloak with which we conceal, reveal or armor ourselves within the world. It comes as no surprise medicine and magic people find al sorts of ways to use the potion. Add natural perfume on top of that and you are directly tapping into plant medicine as well. (I cannot speak for Tabu snorting except to say that sometimes one must dance with the devil and i am fairly certain he smells pretty darn good.)

thank you Marcus & Catmara, your work is deep rooted, growing heartily and the blooming is beautiful to observe.

(as for magic moments, sometimes it is best to keep what is secret, secret. but it’s happening all the time. like now.)

  • So interesting. I did not know there were very many perfumers like this around. It’s good to hear about them.
btw, the Houseoforpheus link is not working. I think it’s the spelling.
    Great article. Thank you.

  • Very interesting article. I was amazed by this intriguing descriptions! I don’t believe in those things but I like how exciting it can be.
Actually, one of my favorite movies is “The Craft” released in 1996)
Perfumery itself is magic, and in combination with the world of magic, it becomes doubly attractive.
I’m in Russia. Thanks for the draw!

  • Wow, these perfumes sound alluring. I live in the Netherlands, EU. A very interesting concept. Thanks for the draw!

  • I really enjoyed reading this article. Hearing about the history of talismen and fragrance was quite interesting. These scents sound divine and I’d love to try them. Thanks for the draw!

    I’m in Canada.

What a fascinating article! The use of perfume in magic and the miraculous use of talismans is tantalizing. If not magic, “at the very least these perfumes are an amazing ritualistic art form”. I live in the US.

  • Oh, I believe in magic, and most things paranormal! I have crystals placed all around my stuff – in my handbag, in my jacket, at my desk. Scent as a talisman is something very personal, like every talisman. One rabbit paw cannot bring luck to everyone who owns it. It just doesn’t work like that. A talisman can be even a written down poem, that you feel very close and “speaking to you”. But I believe that some objects are more powerful than others, like incense for instance, and you can induce more power within them by treating them with care, and love. There should always be love included in the magic.
Thanks for the chance! I already like the FB pages mentioned! I live in Bulgaria (EU).

  • There is green magic all around. Every time I pick a plant it is with intention, respect and love. Djinn sounds amazing and I wouldn’t mind having some of that energy back in my life!

  • Talisman perfumery fascinates me because I believe in magic. It surrounds us every day. I’m in the US. Thanks!

  • I’ve loved magic since I was a child. I always had magic books and cards in my hand! So reading this article made me remember my childhoo . These fragrances sound top notch and I’ll love to try them. I’m a Canadian reader!
