Super Bowl XLV Sunday: Football & Fragrance + Steelers vs. Packers Draw

Managing Editor Mark Behnke laughed out loud when I told him I was going to write about fragrance and football. "You don't even know which teams are playing, he chortled. I told him "Sure I do, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Oakland Raiders". Oakland, Green Bay…big deal. Green Bay fans are the crazy cheese heads, right? Mark hung up.

But I do know about Super Bowls, and  football albeit circuitously. I dated a quarterback in High School, my ex husband is a die-hard Giant Fan that screamed at the players during the game through the TV and constantly changed the channel when the good parts came on… the commercials and half time. I did manage to catch the great commerical for Old Spice, which evidently is what real men smell like and  the half time extravaganzas with Bruce Springsteen, Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson (of the legendary wardrobe malfuction)

This year the Black Eyed Peas are performing  and hopefully will Pump It Up! in Dallas (the temperature has been plummeting this past week) and  Christine Aguillera is singing the national anthem (She has a fragrance too, but she should stick to singing)

Furthermore, I am on a first name basis with a Pittsburgh Steeler. I met 'Mean Joe" (call me Charles) Green, the iconic Hall of Fame Defensive Tackle for the Steelers during the 70s'. I hung out with this really NICE guy on a photo shoot ten years ago. He didn't drink Coke, he wasn't mean and he wore Drakkar Noir.

Football terms for Dummies  (and Perfumistas)

Coach: A head coach, senior coach or manager is a professional at training and developing athletes. At the professional level, coaches may work for millions of dollars a year. The head coach devotes most of his expertise to tactics and playbooks, which are combed over by staff paid even more than at the college level. Head coaching, due to the extensive time on the road and long hours, is a very stressful job. Since the money is good at high levels, many coaches retire in their early fifties. Steelers: Mike Tomlin and Mike McCarthy for Green Bay

Perfumista Equivalent: Christopher Chong of Amouage and Sylvaine Delacourte of Guerlain

Quarterback: Quarterbacks are the leaders of the offensive team, responsible for calling the play in the huddle. Every play starts with a "snap", an action where the offense's center gives the ball to the quarterback, or as a trick play to another offensive player such as a wide receiver. After receiving the ball, the quarterback either throws a pass or hands it to another offensive player; in some cases, the quarterback keeps the ball in an attempt to run or "scramble" past the defense. The quarterback role is one of the most visible and important roles on the team. Aaron Rodgers for Green Bay and  Steelers: Ben Roethlisberger

Perfumista Equivalent: 'Les Nez'- Jean Claude Ellena of Hermes  &Thierry Wasser of Guerlain

Football is a Contact Sport

Perfumista Equivalent: Tom Of Finland Etat Libre D’Orange

An outstanding rookie of the Year: Emmanuel Sanders of the Steelers

Perfumista Equivalent: Atelier Cologne

Gatorade: The corporate sponsor of mega sports. The winning Coach gets a bucket dumped on his head, like flankers by Big Companies are dumped on the market

Perfumista Equivalent: Hugo Boss Orange

Touchdown: Afterwards, the team that scored the touchdown kicks off to the opposing team, if there is any time left. They get an extra 1 points if they can kick a field goal through the posts The scoring team is also awarded the opportunity for an extra point or a two-point conversion

Perfumista Equivalent: Geza Schoen Molecule 01

The Trophy: Called the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Named after the legendary head Coach of the Green Bay Packers

Perfumistas's equivalent: FIFI award

Editor’s Note: I don’t know who will be the MVP of SuperBowl XLV, its not like I have a crystal flacon to forecast the future…of Football J

  • Ha…i live in Wisconsin but i am definitely NOT a Packers fan, but must say that i believe the Packers will win the Superbowl this year…so i am going with 24-14 for the Packers. 🙂

  • Bravo Michelin!
My son who played HS football tried to explain the rules….He explained what a "first down" was…I don't know, maybe 20 times?  I never got any of it.
I will be watching the game for unknown reasons..  My prediction, based on zilch, is Greenbay 19-17.
    Ragna

  • I have no idea about football, Spanish as I am, but if I can be entered in the draw, I will say Packers 28-24.
Good luck for everybody and have a great night!

  • I probably won't even be watching even though one of the teams is in my 'hood. I  think I'll be the odd man out and say Raiders 24 – 21.

    Fun article!

  • I have no opinion or knowledge of this game day, however, I got the biggest chuckle out of this article Michelyn :p

    Thanks for the laugh!

  • Did somebody say "Cheeseheads"!!!!!!!!! Yep i live in cheesehead land but like i said i am not a fan, nor do i consider myself a cheesehead, i just occupy some of the space in cheesehead state. MY BF Jim just felt that my score is too low…he feels it will be a high score game…he is cheering for the Steelers……hmmmmmmmmmm tough call, i will leave my score stand as i called it on top.

  • STEELERS! 27-24.
Okay, I hope that's the case, but I am worried that the Packers might win. Then again, I always think the Steelers will lose.

    Michelyn,

Hail Marys are a dime a dozen it is when they are completed that is the real rarity.

Consider this article a completed Hail Mary.

Now leave me alone until the game is over please. 🙂

    Mark

  • OK, this is totally random cause I know nothing about either team, and could really care less about this game…BUT I'd love to participate in the challenge…so, I say, Pittsburgh to win, 28-14!  Thanks, Michelyn!  And congrats on mixing the Super Bowl with perfume.  Ha ha.  🙂

  • Your perfumista take on football is brilliant and funny too. A completed Hail Mary indeed.
Since I'd love to try the Paestum Rose, I'll answer your question regarding favourite commercial. Mine was the Bud Light "product placement" spot. Funny, but almost realistic in how product placement is getting really jarring in film and TV. The Pepsi Max one with the torpedo cooler taking down the obnoxious jerk had some appeal too.
Thanks for the draw opportunity. (And football would have to be on 24/7 before I'd watch a Jersey Shore episode let alone a marathon!)

  • I don't have a clue about the game, but just wanted to say that I enjoyed this post. Hugo Boss Orange must be awful. 🙂

  • Oh, fun post!  Am kinda sorta watching it right now… my baby bro is a HUGE Steelers fan, has been for yearsnyears.

Also, Troy Polamalu has adorable dimples.

  • Saw the headline and thought someone had lost their marbles but hey, you pulled it together! Nicely done and hopefully Mark is back to taking your calls

The Doritos commercial (where everything comes back to life) was the only commerical to make me laugh out loud. And then I went YUK when I realized where they were headed.  Still clever, tho.

Second place-the Mercedes commercial with all of the old models there to see the news ones.

  • LOL!! Love your footbal & perfume comparisons!!
I think the best commercial was the cute little beetle speeding past his fellow creatures and ending with a big jump to give us a sneak peek at a new VW beetle!! Soo cute!

  • I also really loved the Coke commercial…great dragons and other animated animals about to enter into battle. The dragon melts the ice sculpture "trojan dragon" to reaveal a bottle of coke! I think coke commercials  have remained a leader in advertising at least during my lifetime=)

  • I loved the way you juxtaposed the perfume and the participants of the football game.
    Great article…fun to read!

  • Such a great entry Michelyn! You should send it to ESPN magazine and see if they will run it for next year's football season. 😉 xo
