Sonoma Scent Studio Perfumes and Tea Pairings + Tea and Sympathy Draw

Mary Cassatt’s “The Cup of Tea II” (1879)

Mary Cassatt’s “The Cup of Tea II” (1879) -Mary Cassatt is one of Laurie Erickson's favorite American painters

I have loved fine fragrance all my life ever since my mother introduced me to the olfactory magic of the beautiful perfumes of the mid-20th century.  Enjoyment of fragrant teas is a more recent discovery. For six years I have shared an office with a “perfume despising” co-worker and  my dear  husband  has allergies that prevent me from wearing fragrance in my own home every Spring and Fall.

CaFleureBon’s “Profiles in American Perfumery” series introduced me to Laurie Erickson of Sonoma Scent Studio. Her complex compositions remind me of fragrances that were made fifty years ago. Sonoma Scent Studio has become my favorite Perfume House and is a second “home’ to me, an enchanted place that evokes memories of my youth, when I could spritz with abandon. I am so inspired by Laurie Erickson and as avid reader of CaFleureBon, I am thrilled to be a guest poster and share my tea and scent musings on a cold winter day in New York.

Harney and Sons “Paris” Tea and  Sonoma Scent Studio Lieu de Reves

Imagine an early June morning, a petite young lady with golden hair and bright green eyes sits in an outdoor café in Paris, sipping a delightful black tea enhanced with sparkling notes of bergamot and fruit, tempered with the smooth, mellowness of creamy vanilla. From her fragile  alabaster wrist wafts a delicate, fresh, powdery, violet-heliotrope fragrance… utterly feminine and perfectly matched to the tea. The tea is “Paris”; the perfume is “Lieu de Reves”. I can attest to the fact that Paris is, indeed, a “place of dreams”. Had I owned Lieu de Reves this would have been my perfume of choice to wear during my first trip to Paris in the early 90s.  Incidentally, Lieu de Reves was my first full bottle purchase from Sonoma Scent Studio, as it so much reminded me of that dreamy city.

Mighty Leaf Tea Organic Earl Grey Loose Tea + Sonoma Scent Studio Nostalgie

I prefer my tea prepared in traditional fashion, loose leaves brewed in a teapot. Every Sunday morning I dig out my teal colored cast iron teapot and brew several cups of Mighty Leaf’s flavorful Earl Grey tea. Earl Grey tea, a classic blend of black with bergamot notes, is what I pair with SSS Nostalgie. In my mind, Nostalgie is destined to become a classic as well. In one succinct word I can only describe it as utterly “elegant”. My teenage daughter and I do not always see eye to eye with our perfume choices. Yet, with one whiff of Nostalgie she immediately recognized its beauty. It is as if she intuitively understood its classic grace. When she turns 18, we will be drinking Mighty Leaf Tea Earl Grey from my teal tinged pot as I gift her a full bottle of Nostalgie, the perfect scent to segue her into womanhood.

Mighty Leaf Tea “Spring Jasmine” Tea + Sonoma Scent Studio Forest Walk

When time constraints preclude me from the “brew in the pot” method, Mighty Leaf tea bags are the next best thing. “Spring Jasmine” is a simple blend of green leaves and jasmine petals encased in a soft muslin pouch, hand sewn shut with thick beige thread. The teabag itself is stunning. The tea is divine: florally robust with its potent jasmine note.  I live in a small town in the Northeast where significant climate changes occur as we move from one season to the next. That transition from the bitter cold harshness of winter into the calm, cool, mild weather makes spring the season I so look forward to. For me it represents rebirth and renewal; a resurgence of all that grows lush and green. SSS Forest Walk exemplifies tea in the  forest. When spring encroaches upon us I will be drinking my “over the top jasmine” tea while wearing my quintessential spring fragrance: SSS Forest Walk.

Wissotzky Bedouin Chai Tea +Sonoma Scent Studio Winter Woods

Bedouin Chai is a black tea blended with sage leaves and cardamom. Although it is bold at the onset, when combined with a dollop of organic raw honey and fresh cream, it becomes utterly smooth and mellow.

SSS Winter Woods is a complex, richly satisfying dry vanilla with wood notes (there is no vanilla listed but Laurie tells me that the amber may be imparting that vanilla-esque quality). Sitting in front of a roaring fire with my hubby on a snowy winter night drinking Bedouin Chai and scented in Winter Woods- now that is  a winter's tale worth the telling.

Tazo Wild Orange Herbal Tea + Sonoma Scent Studio Jour Ensolielle

Much has been written about the mood enhancing properties of citrus essences. Wild orange, blood orange, bitter orange, petitgrain, neroli, orange blossom: when I smell these essential oils a smile emerges on my face. So it is no surprise that I adore Tazo’s Wild Orange Herbal Tea. It is a fresh burst of pure orange and so utterly mood lifting. This is my “happy” tea. I would be remiss if I end my musings without mention of my absolute favorite of the SSS line:  Jour Ensolielle. Whenever I smell Jour Ensolielle I  envisage honey drenched rays of orange sunlight. Even on the days when perfume is “verboten” in my house, one whiff of Jour Ensolielle straight from the bottle instantly transforms my mood  from miffed to a state of bliss. When that question emerges, “If you could only have one perfume for the rest of your life, what would it be?” My answer is Jour Ensolielle. Like Tazo’s Wild Orange Tea, Jour Ensolielle is euphoric.

  • I absolutely love, love, love this post! Being a huge tea lover, it was so much fun to see these scents paired with different teas. Also being a fan of orange blossom, I would like to try Jour Ensolielle as well as Incense Pure which isn’t mentioned above.

Also, I would pair Caron’s Nuit de Noel with Mariage Frères Esprit de Noël tea. It’s not that the notes are similar between the two, but they both inspire the holiday spirit whenever I smell them.

  • I have been hearing so much about these scents that I planned on ordering samples with some Christmas money I was gifted. Of course, I would be thrilled to win these and order additional! Love tea and the idea of pairing the fragrances with the tea.

  • What ? You have to sniff a bottle top on your own home
Your co worker do you have any way of convincing her to move herself out or send her resume to other companies
You have my sympathy for sure
My favorite SSS is incense pur
A great tea pairing would be prince Vladimir tea and cb I hate perfume Russian caravan
Thank you sweet Brie for such a lovely post

  • Thank you, Brie, for the lovely spirit you show and for this charming post. I haven’t yet fallen down the scented tea rabbit hole, so please excuse my pedestrian choice, but I would pair Celestial Seasonings green tea & mint with Parfumerie Generale Yuzu Ab Irato. And I love many fragrances of SSS, Incense Pure my favorite and Tabac Aurea the one I want most to try.

  • I’d like to try Velvet Rose with Fortnum and Mason’s Darjeeling because I think it would feel like being in a lovely garden.

  • This is a lovely essay, and the pairing with the teas is wonderful.

I would love to try Jour Ensolielle (I love Tazo Wild Orange Herbal Tea…good choice). Winter Woods is one of my favorite perfumes during this time of year.

I would pair Mighty Leaf Ginger Twist with Like This by Etat Libre d’Orange.

  • Sonoma Scents DO smell like vintage perfume I agree. You know that the finest ingredients are there
CaFleureBon has given me such an education on indie and niche perfumers throughout the year and its my escape too
It was here I discovered Shelley Waddington Ellen Covey Ineke Alexandra Balahoutis and JoAnne Bassett
Thank you and Ms Erickson for a special post to end the year on a note of kindness
To Dream and Winter Woods are favorites but I have an older bottle of Jolie Madame and hope it is brought back
It’s such a glamorous scent you can imagine Rita Hayworth or Myrna Loy wearing it
    Happy new year

  • I love few SSS fragrances and the first one that comes to mind is Jour Ensolielle.

I would pair Nasomatto Nuda with Pearl Jasmin tea.

    Great , great post!

  • Brie, I so enjoyed this post! What a lovely idea and I am eager to seek out your tea choices. As many perfume samples as I own, I have never tried SSS. I told myself it would be my first order of next year. I think I’ve put it off because I read so much positive about this perfumer, and I want to fall in love with a perfumer’s works again, like I have DSH and Roxanne Villa. These scents all sound great but I would love to try Nostalgie.
For my pairing I would combine Revolution Lavender Earl Gray Black Tea with Illuminated Perfumes Vera, a yummy, earthy herbal lavender.

  • As a tea lover this was a fantastic article!! My favorite SSS scent is Winter Woods. I must try it paired with Trader Joes cinnamon vanilla tea. I really am looking forward to trying Forest Walk.

  • I’ve only just started drinking tea, so I’m not too familiar with all the different types of tea. If I were to compare a scent to my favourite tea flavour, Peppermint and Toffee, I would most likely pair it with Molinard’s Vanille Patchouli. It’s when green freshness meets with syrupy sweetness.

My favourite Sonoma Scent Studio scent is To Dream, released in 2011.

Thanks for the draw and have a happy new year!

  • I would love to try the Jour Ensoleille combined with the Tazo Wild Orange Herbal Tea. Sounds lovely.

I would pair the L’Artisan L’Eau d’Ambre Extreme with a nice green tea with lemon.

    Have a happy new year.

  • I am very curious to try Forest Walk, as I have been very impressed with the only SSS scent I have tried as of yet, which is Fireside Intense.
A wonderful pairing for me would be chai tea with M. Micallef Gaïac, or mint tea with Annick Goutal Ninféo Mio.

  • I don’t know Sonoma fragrances so I’d like to try everyone! If I have to choose… Sonoma Scent Studio Winter Woods sounds great!
I would pair the warm and silky structure of Loretta by Andy Tauer with the deep Assam Tea
    Happy 2013!!!

  • I would like to try the “Winter Woods” fragrance – the combination of vanilla and woods allways sounds interesting to me 🙂

One of my favourite sorts tea is Darjeeling – a black tea with bitter, astringent taste (I usually prefer green tea, but this one has a special place in my heart because of it’s taste). I can imagine a patchouli fragrance, with a hint of black tea (not green, fresh, whatever!), the top notes should be a bit spicy, but not citrusy: mainly cardamom, and maybe neroli? The heart should smell like strong black tea with some dry, sharp cinnamon and clove, with a flowery touch of pelargonia. The base notes should contain patchouli, as mentioned, then leather, but not too heavy, and a blend of woods: cedar, sandal and guaiac.

  • Love this post!!!!
Love tea, love perfume, love love love them together!

I am drinking Jasmine right now–the last of my pearls plus some Yin Hao. It’s like drinking sweet fresh flowers and I love it! Often pair with either The Pour Une Ete or my Natio jasmine attar body cream, or occasionally Attar Bazaar Tunisian Jasmine. Otherwise something mild which picks up on the jasmine or the delicate greenness, like a dab from my sample of Ellie D. Or Safran Troublant because it goes with anything, somehow.

Another favorite is Tazo Vanilla Apricot White, which I like pairing with delicate vanilla and vanilla-like scents like my samples of Vanithe and Un Bois Vanille, Safran Troublant, and especially with Perlier Vanillia body cream (I don’t think I have any apricot or osmanthus scents but imagine they’d go well too).

Also: TDC Bergamote with Earl Grey, ambers and woods and spices with chai–anything from Ambre Sultan to Poivre. Tea for Two goes with lapsang souchong, as does anything pine-ish like Fille en Aiguilles and also patchouli. Keemun black tea + Keiko Mecheri Genie des Bois. I should stop now…

SSS Forest Walk, paired with Jasmine, might be my favorite of the described scents– but Winter Woods sounds ‘me’ also, and Jour Ensoleille sounds like the perfect winter pick-me-up.
Clicking around the site, Incense Pure, To Dream, Fireside Intense, Sienna Musk, Cocoa Sandalwood…wow there are way too many great choices!

Thanks CFB and Brie and Laurie! Happy new year all.

  • I have not tried any SSS fragrance yet, but Winter Woods sounds great. That could easily be my favorite.
The proposed mix Wissotzky Bedouin Chai Tea/Sonoma Scent Studio Winter Woods must be a pleasure.

I love black tea with cinnamon and orange. It would be a good companion for Eau d’Italie Baume du Doge.

  • Favorite tea is a high mountain Chinese tea. A green tea that is ultra smooth and delicious. We call it stone crack tea, as Chinese pronunciation gets managed. I imagine wearing Forest Walk on the way to upper reaches of the mountain, past the treeline, to harvest the tea.

  • From those you mentioned Jour Ensoleille is definitely my favourite but Winter Woods is right behind it. I also really like the smell of Sienna Musc.

  • Bravo, Brie! I am so proud of you! What a wonderful post, well-written, creative, inspired, and inspiring! This is a fabulous idea that you have beautifully executed! I look forward to reading more. Congratulations!

I must sheepishly admit that I am unfamiliar with SSS’s fragrances. Something to be rectified immediately as you have piqued my interest! Winter Woods has been on my radar for a while, but your thoughts on pairing Nostalgie with Earl Grey has pushed that fragrance to the top of my list. Thank you!

I love me some Mighty Leaf Tea too! My personal tea fave is Marco Polo from Thé Mariage Frères. However, they have a tea called Sur le Nil, which I haven’t tried. Would be interesting to pair it up with Hermès Jardin sur le Nil if only for the name 🙂

Thanks again for sharing your wonderful thoughts with us! And for the generous giveaway!

  • When I want a break from coffee I drink an herbal blend of flowers and herbs (chamomile, lavender, hyssop) picked up from my local food co-op. When I sweeten it with honey instead of agave it reminds me a teensy bit of the topnotes of Guerlain’s Flora Nymphea.

  • My brother is getting married in Sonoma in June, and I gave my sister in law to be a clutch of samples for Christmas, so she can wear something new for her wedding. I wish I could send her Jour Ensolielle and Lieu de Reves (and have my mother smell Nostalgie)!

  • Just wanted to say that this was a great read! We have plenty of SSS in our home so no need to enter me in the draw! But if I were to pair tea with perfume it would be Chinatown (which I confiscated from my mother 🙂 !!) and Tazo’s Vanilla Apricot tea.

  • Thank you all for these lovely comments….you have actually inspired me to seek out some of the teas that were mentioned in the pairings that I am not yet familiar with!
Michelyn- the art is phenomenal! Gratitude for helping this technologically impaired individual!
Laurie- keep doing what you do, as very few do it as well as you :)!!
Good luck to all in the draw!

  • I loved this article, learned about some new teas AND some new scents.

Sonoma Scent Studio Lieu de Reves had me at heliotrope. I LOVE heliotrope. However, they all sound wonderful.

If I was to create a tea-perfume pairing of my own, I think I would pair a Lapsang Souchong with Bulgari Au The Vert. I like the idea of two sides of the same thing, a smokey black tea with a clean green…..

  • Absolute Scentualist says:

What a delightful and inspiring post, and this looks like a delicious sensory experiment. A pairing I think would be fantastic is SSS’s Velvet Rose with a rich blackcurrant tea. The bright realism of the former would enhance the jammy depth of the latter and would be an automatic mood lifting occasion for me. As for my favorite SSS perfume of those I’ve tried so far, I’m besotted with Rose Musc and plan on upgrading from a mini spray to a full bottle this year. There are also many more of Laurie’s fragrances I want to try including Forest Walk, which appeals a great deal to this Midwestern nature lover. 🙂

  • Jour Ensolielle sounds nice to me.

I’d probably pair Rochas Man with Tea Gschwendner’s Bossa Nova. It’d probably be overkill, but I could love it long enough to enjoy a cup of tea.

  • I’ve tried most of the above, and I like the all, but Jour Ensolielle would be my favourite, and the tea pairing is just perfect — I love that tea too. Perfect for a miserable winter day!

I have been drinking a lot of Stash Jasmine Green Tea lately, and at the risk of going white flower overboard, my first inclination would be to wear it with Lush’s heady jasmine frag, Lust.

Thanks for the draw, and interesting concept. 🙂

  • Nostalgie sounds the best to me. Plus, I love Earl Grey–so whatever goes with that is my choice!

I would love to sit down with a cup of carefully brewed Dragonwell green tea and sniff some Arquiste L’Etrog. I think the warm sweetness of the dates in the perfume would blend nicely with the experience of drinking such a delicate, fine green tea, such as Dragonwell.

  • I haven’t tried any of the Sonoma Studio Scents but I’ll fix that in the new year. I’m very tempted by her fragrances and I’m dying to try her Tabac Aurea as I don’t have any tobacco scent in my collection. I love peppermint tea and I would pair it with Lush’s delightful The smell of weather turning.

  • I love the sound of Jour Ensolielle.

I think the sweet orange tea you mention is my favourite – Tazo’s wild sweet orange. This same tea can be paired with Tubereuse Criminelle. I think it would be a case of sunshine and darkness, of nectar and chocolate ( I know, I know, there is no chocolate in Sl’s Tubereuse Criminelle but I swear I smell it or feel it).

  • Thank you so much, Brie and Michelyn, for this creative and lovely post! I’m truly touched by Brie’s thoughtfulness. This post will inspire me to get back to daily tea drinking — I need to try some of these great suggestions! Happy New Year!

  • This post is lovely and your generosity is appreciated. I am a big SSS fangirl and reach for Tabac Aurea often this time of year. Champagne du Bois was the fragrance that broke through my fear of aldehydes. My favorite tea has been a Lai Chee black tea I found a beautiful store in Hong Kong, Ying Kee Tea House. I could spend hours there sampling and smelling.

  • Nostalgie is a fave!

Well, the best smelling tea I’ve found is Sweet Rose Tea by Tulsi, it’s sooo good! Perhaps I’d pair it with Briar Rose for even more rose! Or Blackberry & Bay for a tart woodiness. Jasmine Green Tea is a fave, I’d pair it with a lemon scent or a honeyed scent. A honeyed or beeswax would be Nostalgie or lemon, Eau d’Hadrien Annick Goutal.

  • Major tea aficionada here!

I’d like to try Forest Walk, and I’m thinking that Tazo Joy would pair well with SSS Rose Musc, which I own and love!

    Happy New Year, everyone!

  • I would love to try Jour Ensolielle and Forest Walk!

A scent+tea pairing I enjoy is T2’s Melbourne Breakfast Tea (black tea with a little vanilla, quite sophisticated and not sweet), with Bulgari Black.

  • I have not tried any Sonoma Scent Studio perfumes, though I plan to in the New Year. I’m so fascinated by Jour Ensolliele, as during 2012 I fell in love with orange blossom as a note. That would be my top wish to try.

    A perfume and tea pairing?

I recently tried an amazing rose + black tea black. It’s called Chinese Rose and is available at Madame Zuzu’s teashouse in Highland Park, IL (northern Chicago suburb). I would pair this bright, delicious, and rosy black tea with Atelier Cologne’s Rose Anonyme, a sour, minerally, yet bright rose cologne. 🙂

  • I’m most interested in Wissotzky Bedouin Chai Tea +Sonoma Scent Studio Winter Woods 🙂

  • I would like to try Winter Woods and Forest Walk.

With Winter Woods I would drink Peet’s Winter Solstice tea, black tea with spices, vanilla and citrus.

With Forest Walk I would drink Tazo Orange Blossom, jasmine green tea with goji berries and tangerine peel.

  • Forest Walk the fragance I would like to try the most, i’m procrastinatinc the order of samples to SSS and I don’t know why, the whole line sounds very very very interesting!

I’m not much into tea but…a cup of Huo Qing tea + with a good, dark green scent like Slumberhouse’s Norne, or maybe something comforting in order to compensate the strong taste of this tea, in my case would be a tiny drop of Mandy Aftel’s Cacao.
    Thank you for the draw!

  • I want to try all of Laurie’s line, but Forest Walk and Winter Woods sound especially appealing.

I haven’t given any thought to pairing tea with scents before, but I think a cup of chai tea would be complementary to the vanilla in Organza Indecence — that combo would be great in this weather!

Thanks to Brie for her generosity in this give-away.

  • Think I’ll pair Winter Woods with some Smokey Earl Grey and se what happens! Would love to try the pairings you suggest – thanks for the drawing.

  • ah, after this post, how could i NOT want to try jour ensolielle *and* the matching orange tea?

as for my own pairing: it would have to be earl grey with angela flander’s earl grey edt (a british perfume house. and her earl grey scent is close to the real thing, which i love to smell even more than drink.)

  • I would like to try Winter Woods, it sounds wonderful.
Would love to pair Kerosene’s new Gourmand with Earl Grey Breakfast Tea.

  • What a lovely gift, Brie! Thank you for your generous offering. I would love to smell any of the SS fragrances, and the one I most want to sniff is Nostalgie. It sounds truly beautiful.

As for a tea pairing with a perfume, I’m going to go an obvious route (to my mind at least). I cannot drink caffeine, so I am a lover of herbal teas and my absolute favorite is Good Earth’s Original Spicy Tea. It is a rooibos based tea with spicy flavors added. There is cinnamon and ginger among many others. It is a tea that is sweet and spicy and oh so good. I like to sip it while the weather is chilly, and it warms my body and soothes my mind. I like to make an iced tea out of it during the warm months and enjoy the spicy bite it brings soothed by the cool ice. With this perfume, I pair Shalimar. On me, Shalimar is spicy, warm, and sweet, just like the tea.

  • SSS Winter Woods is so amazing, especially around this time of year. Definitely my favorite mentioned. I love tea, and one of my favorite pairings this holiday season is Dawn Spencer Hurwitz’s December with Stash Christmas Eve herbal tea. It’s a match made in Christmas heaven!

  • I would pair Forest walk with a nice jasmine tea, and would love to win anything from SSS. I have heard a lot about Winter Woods and i would love to try it.

  • No need to include me in the drawing … I just wanted you to know how much I loved this post, Brie. I’ve been getting better acquainted with fine teas lately, thanks to the delightful Ann of Perfume Posse, who has shared a number of goodies with me. And I am already an SSS lover (like you, my absolute favorite is Jour Ensoleille). Next time I wear it, I’ll think about pairing it with an orange-y tea.

  • My favorite SSS scent started as Winter Woods-it is what made me start to love perfume! But now it is Tabac Aurea.
As for a pairing, II would pair Fireside Intense with a simple Nettle tea (by WIld Season Botanicals) out of a homemade mug while on a walk through the woods on a cold day. 🙂

Thanks for making such transforming scents!
