Holiday Sprits at Annick Goutal Boutique 75th Street and Madison Avenue

The 2015 holiday season was in full swing in New York City and my best suits and festive attire were put to good use attending many fragrance events and Holiday parties. The unseasonably warm weather was welcomed as I went to as many as three events a day.  One of the highlights, was The Sniffapalooza Seasonal Holiday Event  held December 13th.  Team Karen, Annick Goutal and Lladro hosted an Open House all day event for perfume aficionados.

The Annick Goutal boutique was festively decorated in blue and gold. Françoise Alessi, Retail Manager, and her staff warmly welcomed us and put us in the celebratory spirit with fragrant inspired cocktails and delicious edibles. Françoise gave an overview of the brand's history and Annick Goutal's varied professions: classical pianist, model and her original beauty and skin cream collection who opened the first boutique in 1980. It was her desire to incorporate scent into her product line that led her to Grasse where she spent seven  years studying perfumery and in 1981 her eponymous fragrance line was launcehd with the iconic Eau d'Hadrien. Her subsequent passing of breast cancer was tragic but her legacy lives on as her daughter Camille Goutal continues to innovate and works with Annick's favorite perfumer Isabelle Doyen.

LLADRO Madison Avenue

The Lladro Boutique, formally on West 57th Street, relocated their boutique three years ago to Madison Avenue. The new location showcases the brand's exquisite creations in a less formal atmosphere which enhances the shopping experience. Situated steps from iconic tourist destinations, St. Patrick's Cathedral and Rockefeller Plaza, whose Christmas Tree is New York City's world-wide symbol of the holidays and was a lovely backdrop to the day's festivities. Sniffapalooza attendees were greeted with a splendid cava and addictive sweets to indulge in while admiring the handcrafted porcelain creations. Cristina Egido, Communications & Events Manager, was on hand to expertly guide us through a tour of the company's rich history of this exquisite brand. She spoke of the origins of Lladro, based in Valencia, Spain. Founded in 1953 by three brothers, Juan, Jose and Vicente, they became a world leader in specialising in ceramic and porcelain sculptures. The company's history spans exhibits at the Hermitage Museum of Saint Petersburg, considered an art benchmark in the world to trend setting Hollywood TV Studios featuring the brand in shows The Nanny, Big Love and Will and Grace and The Soprano's. Lladro Home Fragrances Collection was re-launched in 2015. The candles combine natural essences offset by the artistic touch of handcrafted porcelain. Each Lladro fragrant candle tells a unique story.  The Heavenly Dreams Collection consists of "Missing you", "Thinking of you" and "Dreaming of you." The Nose and Volutes candles are encased in porcelain vases. These Home Fragrances candles are available in three scents, Gardens of Valencia (notes of peach, jasmine and sandalwood), Mediterranean Beach (hints of orange blossom and notes of musk) and I Love You, Mom (notes of berries, vanilla. chocolate and honey).

  • It is amazing How Annick Goutal decided to learn how to make perfumes when she decided to introduce perfumes instead of simply hiring one of the firms to compose perfumes for her. My fav. pairing is Petite Cherie even though i have not tried the perfume yet (I own Eau d’ Hadrien, Sables, Eau de Fier from the brand). My candle choice would be Gardens of Valencia. thanks a lot for the wonderful draw. I am in the US.

  • Ouds 101 is my favorite pairing. Candle is I Love You, Mom. My favorite thing about Hernado’s report was the information on Annick Goutal’s desire to add scent to her line and how it led her to Grasse to learn perfumery for seven. I have a lot of respect for her. I live in the U.S.. Thanks so much.

  • I’m going to echo Karo (above) completely: Love the Ouds 101 pairing and would pick the I Love You, Mom candle. Love the nose sculpture of the candle! Very interesting, almost dada-esque.

Thanks for sharing a sense of place in NY with us. I love NYC in Christmas; I grew up there and the shops and the lights this time of year are awesome. Who doesn’t love the Rockefeller Center tree?

    In the US.

  • I enjoyed the back story of Lladro and the home fragrance line and the description of the evening in general, it sounds very New York, holiday season and I mean that in the best way. My favorite pairing is Sables with bourbon and vanilla vodka, Sables is such a unique scent. My candle choice would be Mediterranean Beach. Thanks for the fun read and draw!

  • Since Petite Cherie is a summer signature I would not miss a chance for that pairing – I think I may have to try and do one at home this summer! Plus I like the Songes one too. I really like this, I think the scents are creative and the history is sweet. I would like sampler bag. Thank you for the draw.

  • loved the write up. I like this pairing: Petite Cherie: Rose, Pear and Peach paired
up with Prosecco, Absolut Pear and Peach fruit. the candle i would choose is Mediterranean Beach. I like the story of the brand and im glad the daughter kept her mom’s story going.

Loved the history about Annick Goutal, especially her various careers prior to devoting herself more to fragrance! All the pairings sounded wonderful, though as a whiskey drinker, Sables paired with Bourbon, Vodka, Vanilla (is that syrup? Or just vanilla vodka?! Either way, sounds good) appealed to me. I would love to be entered in the draw and if I won the candle, I Love You Mom would be my choice. I’m in the US.

  • Hard to resist the notes in I Love You, Mom, so that would be my candle pick. Though if I was drinking along, the Eau d’Hadrien sounds like it would have been delightful. Thanks for the draw (US).

  • Love the idea of the cocktail-perfume pairings! My favorite pairing was the one for Songes. I am in the US, thank you!

  • I love the sound of the Ouds 101 because I am so fond of rose and oud combined. It creates such a smokey, dark rose scent. I would have loved to have attended this event. I love Annick Goutal fragrances. This article gave me great ideas for pairing her scents!

  • This is an exciting giveaway, as I’ve only tried one of those Annick Goutal scents. The Petite Cherie pairing is my favorite, although the Vanille Charnelle pairing also sounds great. The candle I would choose is Gardens of Valencia. I’m in the US.

  • My favorite pairing is Petite Cherie: Rose, Pear and Peach paired up with Prosecco, Absolut Pear and Peach fruit.

Interesting to hear of Annick Goutal’s different careers. They say the average person has three careers. So awesome to get 7 years at Grasse!

I would choose the Gardens of Valenia candle. I am in the US.

  • The cocktails sound delicious, especially the Petite Cherie pairing! I also didn’t realize that there are several new Annick Goutals to try. I’m in the US, and my choice would be Mediterranean Beach. Thank you.

I always wish that I could easily attend these kinds of events; thanks, Hernando, for describing them for us! I think I would enjoy the Songes pairing from Annick Goutal. From Lladro I think I would love the Gardens of Valencia Candle. I’m in USA.

  • The Mediterranean candle and the Songes fragrance-cocktail pairing appeal to me the most. Although I admit all the scents described from Lladro and Annick Goutal sound delightful.

It is wonderful to learn that Camille Goutal continues to innovate with Annick’s favorite perfumer Isabelle Doyen. The spirit of the house lives on through its children. Thank you for the report, Hernando. I am in the US, and thank you for the draw.

  • My favorite Annick Goutal fragrances is Songes, but the Petite Cherie cocktail sounds like the kind of drink I’d like to whip up on New Year’s Eve. The candles all sound great, but I think I’d pick the Gardens of Valencia. I’m in the US, thanks for the draw.

  • The Sables pairing is my favorite. I appreciate the inside peek into the latest Sniffapalooza event, since I am always hoping to get to NYC at the right time time to participate. Also, my grandmother was a Lladro collector. I would love Gardens of Valencia. In the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • Oh, I’ve never been able to attend one of these food/fragrance combining events. So jealous! For me, definitely Songes! It is probably my favorite AG perfume, and anything to drink with bubbles is a win! So combining the two is nirvana! I don’t know much about Lladro so this was all new information. Thanks for the draw.

  • Ooh, the pairings for Sables and Petite Cherie sound delicious! My favorite Goutal fragrance is Eau de Lavande which, sadly, has been discontinued. I’ve never had the chance to try Sables, though, and always wanted to – immortelle is such an interesting note. I’d heard the history behind the house of AG before, but Lladro is new to me so enjoyed reading Hernando’s account of the brand. My candle choice would be Gardens of Valencia and I’m in the US. Thank you!

  • Songes sounds divine! I love this review. I feel as though I was at the event enjoying the pairings.

I am a huge fan of Annick Goutal fragrances. I love the history of the brand and how her daughter has continued her legacy.

I live in the USA and would like to win Meditteranean Beach or the sampler pack. Thank you!
