Sarah Horowitz Parfums Verano Review (Sarah Horowitz-Thran) + Extending Summer Draw

"August…Like a quick kiss; One wishes for more

But it suddenly turns to leave, Dragging summer away." – Elizabeth Maua Taylor, "August"

And now – here we are! The end of summer. The end of green buds and blooms. The end of happy promise. The scent of my garden is burdened and cloaked in a haze of scorched air. The apples have fallen, bruised in the dry grass. I harvest the remains, saving the smoke and heat, suspending sun-dried flowers against the dark days of winter.

As late August fills me with melancholy, with regrets and sadness, when smoke gets in my eyes, I clear the air and find the perfect antidote in the radiant and enticing scent of Sarah Horowitz Parfums Verano, the Summer 2018 offering from Sarah Horowitz Thran and her Banq de Parfum collection.

"In summer I love to keep it simple…This fragrance truly is open and bright but has a real playfulness to it…It smells like the yellow of the sun…"Sarah Horowitz-Thran

Verano (simply meaning "summer" in Spanish) distills the first flush and fizz of June and early July into a radiant fragrant aura.  Opening with one of my favorite notes in perfumery, cassis, Verano sparkles with a hint of fruity mint and a green bubbly aroma, recalling memories of champagne picnics, Pimms in paper cups and late afternoon concerts viewed from lush green lawns. The subtle use of black currant melds seamlessly with another of my most favored floral scents – the perfume of the Stargazer lily.

Stargazer lily? Yes that one! I know this big beauty can be overwhelming, but Sarah Horowitz-Thran uses the larger than life blossom with a practiced, deft hand. Sarah Horowitz Parfums Verano paints an impression of a floral bouquet in transparent pastels. The sensual, spiced and almost narcotic presence of the Stargazer is muted in Verano – the sensation of the lily from a distance, just enough to entice but never overwhelm. The smooth lily petals and the effervescence of cassis fruit and garden flowers luxuriate on a bed of sheer sandalwood, white amber and clean musk. Yes, summer is almost over but I am comforted knowing that the season can be mine again with Verano. Notes: Cassis, Stargazer lily, sandalwood, white amber and clean musk accord.

Disclaimer:  I would like to thank Sarah Horowitz Parfums for the generous sample of Verano.  My opinions are my own.

Love this part, for me describes the frag perfectly.
    Love the notes…

Gorgeous review, Gail! Your photos look fab. The Apple photo is exquisite at this size. And your lawn? Your lawn?! Wow. Where do you live? I have yet to have opportunity to try one of Sarah’s scents. This one sounds lovely. I love Stargazers. Don’t be sad Fall is wonderful. USA

A floral bouquet sounds lovely, as do the other notes. I do love summer… especially my beach days and the flowers in my perennial garden. But we will soon move on to cooler days. I’m in New Hampshire. Thanks for the draw:)

I have been a fan of Sarah’s for so long, loving “Perfect Bliss” so much that I am probably on my 5th or 6th bottle! This new one sounds right up my alley and I would love to own it. I love Summer and will be glad when it is over because I love Autumn even more.

  • Late summer is my favorite time of year. Everything just feels slower and relaxed. This perfume sounds pretty. I love lily and sandalwood. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • I can hear summer slipping away……the cicadas are singing. I’d love to try Sarah’s new fragrance during the thankfully cooler nights. Sounds lovely. USA

  • Great review, Gail! I love artwork Michelyn! What appeals to me about Verano most is that it’s a floral, summer fragrance. The notes sound like they would be amazing together. I’ve yet to try anything by Sarah Horowitz-Thran, but would love to give this one a wearing. My favorite summer memory of “18” would be spending a week in Gulf Shores at the beach with family.

Wonderful writing again! 🙂 I cannot chose a fave scent – they are all sooooo good!! We are glad the stormy rains are easing a bit!! Thank you for the artwork choices that blend in very well 🙂 we are in the USA

  • I loved reading this, it sounds like a perfect summer perfume. Notes sound amazing. I need this! I don’t have a favorite and sadly the summer is slipping by too quickly. The most memorable part was spending a week with 20-25 other family members at the beach. Now that was some excitement!
Thanks for the draw! I’m in the us.

What a great review and generous draw! I love cassis in this, and I haven’t smelled a lily perfume in so long… this would really scratch that itch. My favorite memory from the summer was blueberry picking… ahhh, summer. Thank you very much!

  • I love stargazer lilies, so I’m curious to see them handled well in a perfume. That part of the review definitely caught my eye.

  • I adore Stargazer lilies, and it sounds as though they are treated well in this fragrance. I don’t have any fragrances from this house, so no favorites. Thanks so much for the draw. This sounds like a beauty. I’m in the USA

  • The cassis open was a big surprise for me! But I think what sold me was the lily note. I haven’t tried anything by Sarah before, but my favorite memory this summer was of eating ice cream with friends!

  • I’m sad to see summer end so this is appealing to me. It is the lily note that immediately caught my attention in this description. Sarah’s perfumes have been around a long time, way before niche was such a thing. I was an early fan of her Bliss. It’s over the top and I love it! Thanks for the reviwe and draw. USA

  • My favorite thing about the review is how sparkling the fragrance sounds! A favorite memory for me would be sitting on the beach in Indonesia drinking fresh coconut water. Arkansas, USA

  • Stargazing Lily, I love them. The fragrance sounds enchanting. Cassis and Lily is an unusual combo but I’m sure Sarah knows just how to make it a beautiful scent. Thank you for the try. I live in the US.

  • This sounds like an amazing fragrant way to recall summer… Maybe only in this desert girls dreams of the PNW. Black Current, Stargazing Lilies, Cassis with the base notes of Sandalwood, & Musk have me longing to spend the days left of Summer wafting this beautiful fragrance. Gail your reviews always draw me in and keep me longing. Great Job. As always Thanks to Sarah Horowitz Parfums, for the generous draw.

  • Lily is such a hard note to do well – it has such a tendency to be overpowering. But paired with cassis, it seems like the perfect combination to accentuate the slow, golden hours of the end of summer. My favorite moment from this past summer has been sitting on my kayak, feet in the warm lake, watching the sun go down over the trees. Absolute peace.

  • Great article. On the “it smells like the yellow of the sun” part, i was sold, it sounds wonderful. Really curious about it, thanks for the chance. US

  • Scented Hound says:

I agree with Gail, the end of Summer also makes me a touch melancholy as the days get shorter. This fragrance sounds like a wonderful “open and bright” keepsake for the days of Summer in Cassis and Stargazer lily: very uplifting as the fires here in California are gradually snuffed out. I know that I would enjoy this fragrance, as it sounds just heavenly! Dearly love Stargazers! Waving from scorched and smokey California!

  • I can not say I love lily in perfumery, but I interested in thin perfume- may be I like it in combination with musc, sandalwood and amber??!! Why not?
Unfortunately, I’ve nrver tested any Sara Horowitz perfume.
My summer memorable moment is rest in scout summer camp.

  • What a pretty fragrance! I love the quote “It smells like the yellow of the sun” I’ve never owned anything by Sarah Horowitz. This one sounds like a great one to start with.
    I live in the USA.

  • I’m curious about it since I’m not sure if I’ve tried stargazers before, and this seems important in the fragrance. Also anything summery is great with me. It’s a very fragrant season.
Cant think of a particular moment, but enjoying the beach throughout the summer.
    I’m in the US, thanks

  • OMG…Stargazer Lilies, cassis, sandalwood, and white amber means I am all in on this one! With Verano it means that I never have to give up any of summer, especially if “it smells like the yellow of the sun.” All of her creations are beyond amazing! Some of my favorites are: Coconut Milk, Perfect Veil, Perfect Bliss, and Citrus Blossom. My memorable moments of summer would be family barbecues with good food a music. Thanks for the draw and I live in the US! 🙂

  • I own perfect veil
And it’s the most perfect skin scent
I loved Gail’s review and her artwork as well
    Verano please!

  • Like the notes in this and also always looking at seasonal drags. This sounds great heading into September which can be warm

  • I like lily but it is often too heavy for me, and I’m always looking for a nice dinner scent that isn’t too heavy. Cassis reminds me of summer annex cassis sorbet is one of my favorites. I too am melancholy at the end of summer, especially since this one went so fast. Seattle now is so smoky due to forest fires I’m not sure I want to return home from the UP in Michigan with my son and my parents in the many lakes up here. This sounds lovely and I’m so pleased to have a chance to try before it returns to the banq. Thank you for the generous draw, I’m in the us

  • Onyinye Elochukwu says:

I like that is smells like the yellow of sun. I love the hint of fruity mint and green bubbly aroma.

  • Haven’t had many memorable moments this summer as I’ve been not taking any time off from work, but am looking forward to a trip to the coast in Fall. I’m satisfying my summer wanderlust by spraying a lot of coconutty perfumes like Coconut Milk by Sarah Horowitz. I’m in the U.S. Thanks!
