Pryn Parfum Morah (Prin Lomros) Perfume Review +Thai Fairytale Draw

Hot on the heels of his Art & Olfaction 2017 Artisan finalist for the stunning spicy rose fragrance Rosuerrier, artisan perfumer Prin Lomros of  Pryn Parfum turns to the folklore of his native country, Thailand, for his latest perfume created in 2017. Pryn Parfum Morah is an unusual and addictive “floriental”. While using classic ingredients of civet and sandalwood in the base, Mr. Lomros makes this perfume his own by incorporating flowers and scents particular to Thailand and Southeast Asia and the result is a perfume that is an exercise in blending perfection, extraordinary depth, and sublime beauty.

Created to skew neither feminine nor masculine, Pryn Parfum Morah is a unisex scent that combines vintage constructs with Asian exoticism. The Thai flowers in the composition represent the curvaceous lusciousness of womankind, specifically a character named Morah in the Thai folk tale of “Chantakorob”. Chantakorob is a popular figure in Thai literature; a warrior with true and honest heart and in this particular tale Chantakorob falls in love with the perfume’s namesake Morah, a savvy Thai "Femme Fatale", who uses all her beauty, wiles and smarts to be able to survive in a world where men's decisions are law and women are barely allowed to think.  As the story goes, after meeting a handsome bandit in the woods one day, Morah slays the kindhearted Chantakorob to be with the bandit, who ultimately abandons her.

She meets the Hindu god Indra who, in the guise of an eagle, tricks Morah, ultimately turning her into a monkey in punishment for her promiscuous ways. The truth and underlying story is that Morah is actually an innocent woman who is set loose into a cruel male-dominated world, innocent to the unforgiving and controlling nature of men. Ultimately she suffers for her passion. A sad story, indeed.

Thankfully, Pryn Parfums Morah has a joyous ending. This extrait develops along the lines of the stories, opening classical and familiar through the use of the aldehydes, civet, and sandalwood, then veering to alluring and exotic with the addition of the cannonball flower and the climbing ylang. The coffee, tobacco, pepper, and ash take root and ground the perfume solidly in the bandits fantastical forest, while the slightly indolic white florals combine with the opium and champaca to create an almost hallucinogenic feeling that brings to life the idea of a folkloric tale, one based in fantasy, but leaving a lasting impression as if lessons has been taught and and learned. Like the legend of Morah, Pryn Parfum Morah is an alluring fragrance that leads you to your own fairytale.

Notes:  Aldehydes, Coffee absolute, Indian Tuberose, Gardenia, Frangipani, Opium, Black Pepper, Civet,Tobacco, Oakmoss, Ash, Cumin, Golden Champaca, Cannonball flower, Climbing Ylang Ylang, Sandalwood, Teak

Disclosure: Thank you SO much to Prin Lomros for supplying my sample. The  opinions are my own.

I love the idea of this scent, and I love Robert’s recounting of the original fable.

Ylang? Coffee? Tobacco? Civet? These are notes to love. I’d take a 10 ml of this any day; it sounds wonderful.

  • Morah sounds just fantastic – With a very interesting blend of notes – I have been wanting to get my nose on Pryn for a while so winning a 10ml would be a great start.

I am in Melbourne Australia 🙂

This sounds so unique and exotic! I’ve never heard the story of Morah. Tragic, indeed. But the perfume sounds beautiful! I’d be enchanted to try it.

The first character(s) from a fairytale that popped into my mind were the Twelve Dancing Princesses, going through the Forests of Silver, Gold, and Diamond leaves… but on second thought, they weren’t actually very nice princesses… still, could make for a very interesting inspiration! Thanks for introducing us to this! I’m in the USA.

  • I like the notes on this one, frangipani, coffee and pepper, i’m all in 🙂
Also a really nice review from Robert. Thanks for the draw, i live ib the EU.

The notes in Morah Extrait are very intriguing Aldehydes, Coffee absolute, Indian Tuberose, Gardenia, Frangipani, Opium, Black Pepper, Civet, Tobacco. I have never tried any Pryn Parfums I need to. I would love to win the 10 ml of  Pryn Parfums Morah Extrait. I would love to scent Gildarts Clive from Fairy Tail Guild’s S-Class Mages with Pryn Parfum Ayothya.

  • Having not heard the fairy tales of Thailand, I found this tale to be most interesting. Thank you Robert. I would love to win the Discovery Set as I don’t know anything about this perfumeur. I would love to scent the Beast, from Beauty and the Beast. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the USA

  • Robert has me craving this! Can we choose a Disney fairy tale? I'd love to scent Maleficent. I bet she smelled like a million bucks, some sort of combination of Mitsouko, Rochas Femme and Bandit. I choose the discovery kit

  • Nice review Robert. First time hearing of this House and fragrance
Interesting combination of notes. Like to try the Discovery set
    Thanks. U.S

  • I must say the notes look very intriguing. I don’t know what cannonball flower is, and I wonder what this opium note will smell like. I took a look at their other fragrances and I found a lot of uncommon notes. Interesting!
I have no idea which fairytale character I would scent. The little red riding hood? LOL.
I’d be interested in a discovery set. Thank you for the draw! I live in EU.

  • My favourite part of Robert’s review was the examination of the notes in the context of the legend. I would love to win a 10ml of Morah; it’s got many of my favourite notes. I live in Canada, and I would scent Bluebeard if I could.

  • It is always nice to discover other culture’s folklore. Morah seems very good. But I would love to win the Discovery set.
I live in the E.U. Thank you.

  • Wonderful review. Morah sounds fantastic the base of the review. I would like to win the discovery set. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.

You had me at civet, oakmoss, opium and tobacco!! Am not familiar with this tale, must read!
If I were to scent any figure from a fairytale it would be Gwenevere, wife of Arthur, who actually did exist, a fierce Pict warrior!! She would be wearing vintage Bal a Versaillés!!
Would live the 10 ml travel spray.
    I am in the USA.

  • Morah has many aspects that appeal to me– I am very curious about these floral notes I’ve never smelled, and the story is interesting too. I was not expecting the underlying meaning.

Hmmm… I liked the suggestion for Beast. It’s not quite a fairy tale but I’d love Ronia from Ronia the Robber’s Daughter.

I would like to win the discovery set. Thank you for the chance to try these!

“a lasting impression as if lessons had been taught and learned”, maybe like Adasm and Eve in the beautiful garden having had their eyes opened after eating the apple? I think scednting Snow White and Rose Red–the Grimm brothers version–would be fun. If chosen, I would love to win the discovery set. I live in the US and thank you for this opportunity.

  • I love the idea of this scent- sounds very interesting, but as I guess more retro.
    I liked Robert’s review!!!
I have Pryne Parfume samples- I am glad to have those beauties in my collection and time to time teste.

  • “A warrior with true and honest heart” – it sounds like myself, at least, how i want to be… I enjoyed a lot reading the review, the tale itself and the description of the notes.
I would like to win the discovery set!!
    Thank you for everything,

  • Anna Egeria says:

I had never heard of this Thai folktale which I’d call a morality tale as Morah is made to pay by the god Indra. The fragrance sounds so beautiful. My favorite fairytales, I don’t think I could scent. I’d like to win Morah and I’m in the US. Thank you for the draw.

  • I’m not familiar with Thai folklore, but I really like the story. It made me curious and will explore more of that.
The way Robert describes the evolution of the perfume from the opening to the base is very poetic and captivating. Would really want to experience the olfactory sensation the perfume offers. The combination of classic and Thai exotic notes sounds extraordinary.
Would really like to scent The Snow Queen.
Would like to win the discovery set. It would offer the chance to try more new scents from Pryn Parfum.
    EU, Romania.

  • Great review. All of my collection is from Europe, I’m curious to know what someone from Thailand makes with all those gorgeous tropical fragrances. The fragrance itself sounds like a journey. I’d choose “Mary’s Child” by Broth with sweet bread, milk, berries and maybe some angelic gold dust mixed in. If I’m the lucky winner, I would choose the discovery set. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • An excellent review, Robert.
The parallel between the development of the scent and the story it draws inspiration from is exquisitely written. I’m glad the last impression leads to a positive outcome.
A character I would love to scent is The Little Prince. Not sure this is a fairy tale, but it’s a story that has been imprinted in my memory.
The Discovery set would be an an incredible opportunity for me to try more scents from Pryn.

I really enjoyed reading about the folklore story of Morah. I have been to Thailland a few times. The scents are intoxicating there. I am intrigued by the ash and cannonball flower notes in this perfume.
I would choose the discovery set.
    I live in the USA.

  • Sounds so amazing! Coffee, tobacco and opium notes make it sound so spicy and sexy.
I’m not sure which character I’d scent from a Fairy Tale. Maybe Bambi? Something that would be innocent and earthy?
I live in the U.S. and would choose Pryn Parfum Morah if I won.

  • I’m interested in the cannonball flower – I’ve never heard of that flower! Morah sounds lovely overall.

As for scenting a fairy tale, I bet Red Ridinghood smells like blackberry, raspberry and fresh baked, buttery pie crust.

I’d like to enter for the Discovery Set. I live in the USA.

  • great review, interesting idea behind the scent.Havent tried anything from this house ,some of these fragrances have some unique notes ive never tried like goat hair so definitely would like to try.

If i had to scent a fairy tale my choice would be paul bunyan, resinous, woody, earthy with some green notes.

I’d like to enter for the Discovery Set. I live in the Canada.

  • I’ve tried 2 Pryn’s scents when I was in Bangkok 2 months ago and they were really good, I still have these blotters and they still smells quite intensively. I really like that Prin Lomros is using local ingredients to create his perfumes, it makes them unique. Chantakorob will be my chosen character from the story. I prefer the Discovery Set. I live in Poland.

  • I love the modern sensibility of Robert’s review: I can fully agree that Morah just did what she had to do to survive in the world of men! And what fairytale character would I scent? How to choose?! I think a villainess would be interesting, so I’d choose the witch who lured the hapless Hansel and Gretel! Sweet, but with a sharp, woodsy bite. I live in the US, and the discovery set would be my first choice! Thanks for the draw.
