Provision Maitri (Sherri Sebastian)– New Perfume Review+ Sensual Vetiver Draw

Two Women Friends Gustav Klimt 1916

Perhaps, in the fragrance industry, International Women's Day should be International Women's Month! Today, I am continuing to celebrate the contributions and accomplishments of women in fragrance with a review of Provision Maitri, composed by Sherri Sebastian  late in 2016.

Sherri Sebastian of Provision (Notes from The Lab)

Sherri Sebastian has spent twenty-five years as a professional perfumer and currently holds a seat on the board of directors of the American Society of Perfumers. "Part artist, part scientist", Sherri Sebastian wears at least three hats!  As a "perfumer's perfumer" she has worked behind the scenes to help realize the olfactory visions of several big fragrance brands.  As an entrepreneur Sherri has created three independent fragrance lines of her own, Provision ®, Sebastian Signs and Purusa Naturals. Also, many readers will recognize Sherri Sebastian as the skilled author of ÇaFleureBon's monthly feature "Notes From the Lab".  In her engaging articles Ms. Sebastian offers us her extensive knowledge and expertise, making the serious science of perfumery fun to read about and easy to understand. Her posts are some of my favorites. I have been coveting the new Provision line (both the perfumes and the body products) since it debuted in late 2016. A couple of weeks ago I was surprised and pleased to open my mailbox and find samples of all three of the Provision ® fragrances, Maitri, Resonance and Las Flores.  All three perfumes blew me away, but I was especially taken with Provision Maitri.

For Provision Maitri I was inspired by the classic European Vetiver fragrances and wanted to add a modern flair with a mandarin/musk accord I created along with eco-certified Vetiver from Madagascar, which I found to be sensual and soft.."  – Sherri Sebastian

Fruit Trees, 1901 – Gustav Klimt

Provision Maitri opens with a sunny and vivacious bergamot, reinforced with a unique mandarin/musk accord and further enhanced with the mouthwatering and spicy qualities of freshly grated ginger.  The ginger root in the composition not only compliments Maitri's initial bergamot notes with a citrus-y bent of its own, but also helps to focus the subsequent bright green woodiness of the sheer, eco-certified vetiver chosen by the perfumer. This unusual and almost transparent veil of vetiver gently rests on my skin, slowly becoming richer, deeper in olfactory color and more opaque as each distinct layer of the fine vetiver is revealed.

The many facets and nuances of Provision Maitri unfold over a period of four to five hours. As Maitri dries down, oakmoss adds a tiny bite of resinous pine bark to the composition, grounding the perfume in the forest and in the sweet, grassy loam of earth and roots. Powerful and long-lived, Maitri lingers for at least eight hours on skin and considerably longer on clothing, finishing with a translucent veneer of mandarin and musk.

The word Maitri translates to “self-love" in Sanskrit.  Maitri embodies the ideals of the Provision collection, "…crafted with love and precision to enhance your mood, environment, body and spirit as you move throughout the day…" . Provision Maitri speaks to me of clear, bright days in sun-drenched gardens and the dappled shadows of surrounding woodlands, energizing the body and calming the spirit. Notes: Italian Bergamot, Organic Eco-Certified Madagascan Vetiver, Ginger Absolute, Mandarin-Musk Accord, and Oakmoss.

Disclaimer:  I would like to thank Sherri Sebastian and Provision for the generous samples of Maitri, Resonance and Las Flores.  My opinions are my own.

This perfume bottle is one of my favorites. I like the contrast between white and transparent. I also follow Sherri’s monthly notes from the lab. I didn’t know she has been a perfumer for 25 years. I thought she might have started her perfumery career about 5-6 years ago. Provision Maitri seems a nod to the classics with notes with vetiver and ginger. The perfume color indicates the richness of the formula and the vetiver is ethically sourced. I have a mixed relationship with vetiver. Some I truly love such as FM Vetiver Extraordinaire and Lalique Encre Noire and some I am still ambivalent about. Thanks for the draw. I am in US.

  • The most beautiful bottle I’ve ever seen, and mandarin musk accord and ginger wow this looks really creative with sun dancing vetiver aura, what a beautiful bottle for drew, In US.

  • I just LOVE Vetiver Fragrances with a passion! So rich green and earthy! What Gail wrote about Sherri Sebastian wearing at least three hats of perfumer’s perfumer, entrepreneur and author as she involves herself in the creation of a new fragrance of Provision Maitri. I’m not so sure what the importance of having a so called Organic Eco-Certified Madagascan Vetiver. I guess with all the reformulations nowadays making many scents diminish in their strength and performance… I want my fragrances to last, especially with the cost just going up and up. I do find this description of her new fragrance to be mouth watering! Yes her exploration of new and interesting notes from her journal is interesting from the CaFleureBon Notes from The Lab articles… I do live in the US… THANK YOU

Big fan of vetiver! Route de Vetiver, Vetiver Extraordinaire, Sammarco Vitrum, SP Parfums Licorice Vetiver, Nishane Sultan Vetiver, Mona D’Orio vetiver, Tom Ford Grey Vetiver, Guerlain! Oh so many more!!
The way Gail describes her experience with this perfume, I could almost sniff it in the air!!
    I am in CT. USA.

  • I love that bottle! Gail’s description of Provision Maitri as “energizing the body and calming the spirit” really resonates with me. Vetiver is sometimes hit or miss on my skin, but a few of my favorites are Le Labo Vetiver 46, SP Parfums Licorice Vetiver, Guerlain Vetiver pour Elle and Aeon 001.

    I am in the U.S.

This combination of vetiver with a ginger accord sounds terrific. Reading about the tricky use of some of the chemicals is interesting. The substitution, for example, which occurs with musk presents challenges, but also is gratifying for the animal lover in Ms. Sebastin. Gail’s review takes you right to the fragrance which is awesome. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the USA

  • Classic European with a modern flair? Sounds great!! I don’t yet have a vetiver dominant fragrance. I was swayed by one recently that is still in to back of my mind to try again. Love that it is long lasting. I’d love to try this one, the bottle is pretty. Thanks for the chance. US.

  • Richard Potter says:

The bottle is exquisite and the perfume sounds lovely and intriguing. Thanks, Gail. USA

  • That bottle design is awesome. The citrus, ginger and vetiver notes remind of Vetiver Creed for men. I am a vetiver fan so I am very interested in a feminine take of these notes. Gail’s review reminds of parts of Florida where wild oranges trees and its fallen fruit scent the air of the woods. Here in the USA

  • Chocolate Marzipan says:

Vetiver often proves to be a challenging note for me but Gail’s review of this perfume has really made me want to try it! This might very well be the vetiver fragrance for me ! I love the simplicity and aesthetics of the bottle as well. Thank you for this generous draw. I reside in the United States.

  • This reads like a unique interpretation of vetiver note. Some included notes I don’t associate with vetiver. Today is the first time I heard of Notes from the Lab so I’ll seek it out. Fan of vetiver since Guerlain Vetiver. USA

  • I enjoy vetiver scents and an oakmoss drydown sounds beautiful. I really liked her “debunking perfume myths” articles. It is so strange how persistent these myths can be! I’m in the US and thanks for the draw!

  • Very beautuful review.
The start of this perfume is veri promising- sunny bergamont, than mandarine- musk and slicy ginger.
    Very nice pictures.
I like vetiver fragrances very much, from niche Sycomore Chanek, snd from lux- Encre Noire Laluque.

  • Great review and thanks for this giveaway. I do like Vetiver but haven’t tried many. So hope to get a chance with this. I really like the notes on this fragrance as well. I think it will remind you of a nice sunny day surrounded by green and other colors. Thanks

The bottle is beautiful! I love the proportions, and it looks so SOLID. Great review, Gail! I love perfumes grounded in the forest, earth or roots, and it sounds like this certainly is. I don’t believe I’ve ever smelled vetiver-ginger duo, and this sounds mighty intriguing. Thank you for the review and the oh-so-generous draw! I’m in the USA.

  • I love vetiver! That the perfume was “…crafted with love and precision to enhance your mood, environment, body and spirit as you move throughout the day…” is a fabulous plus. I’m in the USA, thank you!

  • I only own one vetiver-dominant fragrance by Guerlain (I think it’s just called Vetiver). It smells okay on me but much better on my boyfriend. But Provision Maitri has many other facets to it, including ginger, that makes me think this would smell really wonderful on me. The fragrance sounds earthy and woody. I really like the sound of it.

I enjoyed reading Sherri’s article “What’s Real in a Fantasy World.” I had never considered the science and chemistry behind perfume before I read this article.
I love that Maitri means “self-love” in Sanskrit. That is what exploring fragrance means to me. I like Guerlain’s Vetiver a lot. And oh, that bottle design of Maitri. Stunning!

  • Carol Webb says:
