Perfumes for The Designated Driver + A Toast to New Year’s Eve Fragrance Draw

December 30, 2013December 30, 2013

Welcome to Our Glorious Lifestyle by Shag

New Year’s Eve is our night to usher out old, tired 2013 and welcome a fresh new year. We are full of hope and ready to meet the challenges we face, but first we gather together to celebrate. Society dictates that one person be chosen to refrain from imbibing alcoholic beverages so that all can get home safely afterwards: the Designated Driver. Before you bemoan that having that task fall to you is a sorry fate, we are here to help, with a selection of booze-inspired fragrances (and non-alcoholic beverages) that will help you fit right in and have a great evening with no hangover and intact memory.

Starting the evening with a few cocktails, how about something made with gin? Penhaligon’s Juniper Sling is bright, fresh, and redolent of aromatic juniper berries. Bracing and delightful, Juniper Sling will keep you alert and sociable. Sip a tall glass of tonic with lots of lime and you will definitely feel part of the crowd. If whiskey is more your cup of tea, so to speak, you can’t go wrong with Luckyscent exclusive Decennial Bois Bourbon, with its slightly sweet, spicy notes reminiscent of a top-shelf mash. Have a refreshing glass of ginger ale with a twist to accompany your aroma.

The Dinner Party by Jules-Alexandre Grun

At the dinner table or buffet, the wine flows freely. Opt for sparkling mineral water to drink, but wear Kelly & Jones #3 Notes of Cabernet, a piquant blend of black cherry and vintage leather created to enhance the complex scent of fine wine as well as hearty victuals. You’ll smell as delicious as the delicacies at the table.  If lighter fare is being served and you prefer a fragrance to match, Jardins d’Ecrivains Wilde (named for Oscar Wilde), with its slightly grapey, fruity scent, will be the perfect accompaniment. Your friends will be impressed with your ability to pair perfume with food as adeptly as they pair wines. For dessert, nothing beats the narcotic, honeyed scent of Ginestet Botrytis. While you sip your creamy cappuccino, your companions’ ports and sherries won’t hold a candle to your intoxicating fragrance.

designated driver absinthe cafleurebon

To Absinthe Friends by Niagara

Post-dinner drinks run the gamut from creamy liqueurs to doctored coffees to exotica. There is almost nothing more exotic than the ritual and purported psychotropic effects of absinthe. As your companions succumb to the ghostly swirls of wormwood, you’ll smell divine, and just as exotic, in L’Artisan Parfumeur Fou D’Absinthe. Rich, deep, and sweet, laced with spice and licoricey absinthe notes, anyone who snuffles you will be captivated. Your bartender should be able to make you a bitter hot chocolate, or try a spicy home-brewed ginger beer to add zing to your evening.

designated driver clock cafleurebon

The clock is getting ready to strike, and the revelers are out in full force, glitzy party hats on, dancing and making merry. One last toast of champagne as the clock strikes midnight, and you are wearing the divine YSL Yvresse, a perfume that sparkles as much as the wine bubbling into everyone’s noses. Instead of the ubiquitous sparkling cider, try some non-alcoholic sparkling wine to fill your champagne glass.

3! … 2! … 1! …

I plan to stay in, share a bottle of wine, and go to bed early tomorrow night. Possibly some Scrabble may be played. I’d love to win Fou d’Absinthe or Notes of Cabernet. I’d wear Decennial Bois Bourbon tomorrow if I had it, it sounds heavenly. Thank you as always, and I’m in the US, as always. 🙂

I am hoping for a quiet night at home after having a cozy dinner with friends! I would be happy to try any of the three fragrances. If I had a choice of any in the article, I would wear Notes of Cabernet. Thank you for the draw!

    Linda says:

Jardins d’Ecrivains Wilde is my choice for the draw – I plan on celebrating in a quiet way with my husband – dinner will be a delicious roast garlicky chicken. Here’s to the new year!

I love the way Yvresse is described, sounds like something I would wear and I also would love to wear the Botrytis.

Happy New Year to all! Great article . We are cooking up some high caloric sweets. Starting with a chocolate fondue with strawberries and mandarin orange slices, chilled to perfection! I will be wearing my own Sabra CoCo perfume in keeping with a foodie theme. Then change to a combination of SkyDancer and Chang’e perfumes.
My choice is L’Artisan Parfumeur Fou D’Absinthe in keeping with our sweets theme. I am in the US.

this article reminds me of the article posted about Absinthe at Cafleurebon in which there was a picture of Johnny Depp drinking absinthe. My new year plan is to meet one family friend for the first time (my sister’s sister in law) …i am in the US and my choice is L’Artisan Fou D’Absinthe

I’ll probably venture out on the town with some friends and have nominal drink or two along with the celebratory glass of champagne to ring in the new year. If I had it, I’d probably wear Kelly & Jones #3 Notes of Cabernet which is also the perfume I want to win in the draw. I love red wines with cherry nuances, Pinot Noir, so to have a perfume with that along with vintage leather would be great. However , Juniper Sling sounds great as well to accompany me on New Years Eve, as I am a gin and tonic type of guy. So If you happen to see me at the bar, you’ll know what I’m drinking. Lol I’m in the US. Thanks for this wonderful year end draw!

For me it shall be a quiet intimate evening with my husband. Which is how we have celebrated for years, (why mess with a good thing) Quiet with the exception of fireworks exploding all around us. Wonderful article! Happy New Year to all, and may 2014 ring in on the note of hope and blessings to all. My choice would be Fou D’Absinthe and Wilde, I am in the US.

I’m cooking dinner for neighbors and friends, including some kids that view us as adopted grandparents. Plans include fudge making and eating and a variety of board games. We’ll see who makes it till midnight 🙂 I could see wearing Juniper Sling because I love it but it’s more of a warm weather scent to me – I’ll probably wear my booze as Ambre Russe. I’m in the US and would be happy to win any of the three perfumes offered, thanks and have fun!

NYE is always lowkey for me. Friends come over with appetizers and desserts. I have champagne on hand and we have fun until the wee hours of the morning. I love the idea of pairing boozy fragrances with non-alcoholic cocktails. I love the idea of Botrytis with a cappuccino. Here’s to a great 2014! And if I am lucky enough to win, I would love Wilde.

  • December 30, 2013 at 10:57 pm
    Lizzy says:

Oh, what a delightful vision for New Year’s! So festive.

My husband’s family is Japanese-American, so they mark New Year’s Day with a huge feast composed of dishes representing good fortune and longevity. I’ll be at my sis-in-law’s house helping cook on New Year’s Eve and, because we have a new baby in the house, probably falling into bed before midnight, LOL!

In my fantasies of a New Year’s Eve in the future when I can once again stay up with other adults, I think I would enjoy a tapestry of scent woven with Bois Bourbon, Notes of Cabernet, Wilde, Botrytis, and Fou d’Absinthe. I love the sound of Juniper Sling–especially since I enjoy a good gin and tonic–but would more likely spritz it on a handkerchief and huff it throughout the evening to perk me up than wear it 😉

I would love to try all three scents in the giveaway–Fou d’Absinthe in particular has been on my wishlist at Luckyscent for months and both Wilde and Notes of Cabernet sound incredible! I am in the US.

    Love this piece!
My plans are very low-key, with some possible early first night/ice sculpture type stuff, then maybe pick up some Wild Turkey Bourbon ice cream and hang out at home with movies and folks. Boozy ice cream is the best! Botrytis is a favorite of mine and would be perfect for a warm cuddly evening!
(Also Frapin 1270) I haven’t tried Bois Bourbon yet but I think I’d love it!

Thank you for the draw! I would probably enjoy any of the three.
Kelly & Jones #3 Notes of Cabernet sounds deep and dark and sweet, definitely my top choice.
But I do enjoy lighter scents also, and Jardins d’Ecrivains Wilde has notes like bergamot, carnation, and tea which I love. And Fou D’Absinthe has patchouli and pine and spices…amazing.

I would start my evening with the delightful Juniper Sling. My one complaint is its longevity, which at this party would be a plus, since I can easily move on to Kelly & Jones #3 Notes of Cabernet. We were given a wine-of-the-month subscription as a wedding gift, and I am suddenly interested in wine as a variation on perfume — or in this case, perhaps, perfume as a variation on wine. I haven’t tried any of Kelly & Jones, although I’d love to, so I don’t know about the longevity, but let’s just assume that I can go right into Botrytis for dessert. I love honey-based desserts and scents, and I would love to try Botrytis for the first time on New Year’s Eve! Of course I would end the night with the delightfully fizzy Yvresse, even if I had to pour it over myself with seven other perfumes in place. Excess! That seems to be the idea and I’m all for it once a year. What a wonderful story. Sure to be a bit more exciting than my actual plans, which are TBD.

I am in the US. If I win the draw, my first choice is Kelly & Jones #3 Notes of Cabernet. Thank you so much for this wonderful story and draw. 🙂

We spent a cozy evening indoors, as there was too much snow and hazardous conditions for driving. Lovely evening anyway!

Any of the three would be a terrific prize. (U.S.)

Being that I work this AM, we had finger foods of all sorts while we watched some of the New Years Eve programs on TV, but was in bed by 11pm.
    I would choose: L’Artisan Parfumeur Fou D’Absinthe

    Damir says:

Son is six, so we were at home, as well as last few years. There were many fireworks, more than in previous years, so we enjoyed in them. The rest as usual: some wine, homemade sweets, probably too much food. We watched Midnight in Paris. Perfumes of the eve were Bombay Bling! and Dune. As an EU reader, I’d love to win Fou D’Absinthe. Happy New Year!

I have a recent New Year’s eve tradition where my husband and I prepare an elaborate meal while drinking champagne. It’s a fun activity with a wonderful reward. We laugh, we indulge and we enjoy. I live in the US and would love to win L’Artisan Parfumeur Fou D’Absinthe. Happy New Year!

New Years Eve is already over. I have spent it at home, browsing internet, writing emails, with glass of wine on the table. Then I watched fireworks in the town from my balcony… and went to bed. I dont use to celebrate New Year s Eve. 🙂 Thanks for giveaway, I am interested in Fou D Absinthe, since I live in EU. Lubka

    Martha says:

I went out with my BF and another couple to a restaurant called Justus Drugstore. It is a farm-to-table restaurant. The main course for me was rabbit, but it was preceded by a sparkling wine cocktail made with Cava and mulberry brandy. The soup was a smoked trout bisque. Yum! We were home by midnight relatively unscathed. I’d like to win either the Fou D’ Absinthe or the Jardins d’ Ecrivains Wilde. I live in the U.S.

I started to watch a movie early evening, then tried to get some work done on a new story. Got a little stuck and had to do more research. Sounds exciting, huh? Not as exciting as having a bottle of L’Artisan Parfumeur Fou D’Absinthe! In the USA.

We didn’t go out for NYE last night because both hubby and I have been sick the last few days. We aren’t much for the NYE scene anyway … Usually we go out for dinner and home early before the craziness starts. We did pop open a bottle of bubbly at midnight, had a toast and a kiss!

I am actually interested in all three scents and I am in the USA. This was a very cute article!

    Gypsy Parfumista says:

This year a dear friend turned 21 ON New year’s Eve. We went and toasted him (he drove sixty miles to comeback to my town where he goes to school from home just to celebrate his coming of age) with shots of vanilla rum, bourbon AND (yes…) Absinthe!! After the young ones went bar-hopping we older folks went home and rang in the New Year with blood orange Manhattans (me) Rob Roys (mom) and White Russians (bf)!

Fou d’Absinthe has always been one of my fave L’Artisan perfumes (since I discovered the House actually) so that is a definite prize of choice for me. The K&J #3 Notes of Cabernet-sounds nice too!

Happy healthy and wonderful new year to everyone!!

I LOVE this article! Booze-inspired perfumes for the designated driver…that’s using your head…or is it, nose?? Great jopb, Tama! 🙂

    Thanks for the draw…

    Devon H says:

I had sort of a quiet New Year’s Eve. We stayed home, had a couple my hubby and I are friends with over for dinner (I made a Greek chicken dish, Kota kapama, with zucchini and roasted seasoned red potato chunks). We rang in the new year (me, I got trashed on champagne – I figured 2013 owed me after the not-great year with my baby dying), and stayed up late. My grandfather was dying so that’s why we chose to stay home, as I was unsure when the call would come. He left us on the evening of New Year’s Day. I’m not able to really wish anyone a “happy” New Year – instead, I’m saying “here’s to getting through the next year.” 2013 I am very glad to see go.

I would love to be entered for all three perfumes, L’artisan Parfumeur Fou d’Absinthe, Kelly & Jones #3 Notes of Cabernet, and Jardins d’Ecrivains Wilde. Thank you!

    Thanks USA

    Jodi P. says:

New Year’s Eve 2013 was delightful!
Since this is a perfume blog, I will start by saying that I wore the dusky sweet fragrance “Memoirs of a Trespasser” from the Imaginary Authors line. What better fragrance to wear as I started the evening in the home of a special new friend, feeling a bit like a trespasser myself. It is always exciting to enter the world of someone you are just getting to know, but especially so on a night where friends and family might be around, as they were this night.
All went well, however, as we enjoyed hot and spicy bowls of homemade Louisiana Gumbo and barbecued chicken wings with blue cheese dip followed with frosty glasses of chilled Ginger Beer. Yum!
Candles glowed on dark wood tables, the smell of red chilli peppers mingled with sage, and I could almost taste the vanilla wafting from my scarf. It was a night of new beginnings for me.
Later, we went dancing at a club uptown, and as the band played David Bowie’s “If you say run, I’ll run with you,” I could almost see my new friend and I running out into the cold snowy night as we dared to cross over the bonds of the past and find our way together down a smoky tobacco road in search of adventure.
So I am looking forward now to seeing what 2014 brings- and if I would be so fortunate as to win a fragrance from this very generous draw, I would be happy with any of the three offerings!
Thank you for bringing it forward – Upper Midwest of the United States

What a fun article Tama! Fou D’Absinthe is now on my must try list, I became fond of the real thing when I was in Amsterdam. Thanks for sharing these suggestions. I’ve always wanted to sample Geza’s fragrance for Bombay Sapphire too but it seems impossible to track down.
