Tiziana Terenzi is a company founded in 1968 by Guglielmo Terenzi and Luigia Mancini in Terenzi that encompasses three generations of perfuming and candle making expertise. Evelino Terenzi is considered the "soul of the company", and his children Tiziana and Paolo are the Designer and Perfumer, respectively. Paolo is also the President of the company. Because they are candlemakers as well as perfumers, their fragrances tell a story of the stages of a journey consumed by fire.
Fire and Snow by Nancy Eckles
White Fire (2012) represents the silence of the snow brought to life in flame. It opens with clear, clean notes that have a lively sparkle. A touch of greenery and florals peek through the crystalline snow, like a snowdrop in the spring. Soon, the fire appears in the form of sandalwood and musk, and the glitter of the snow becomes more golden, reflecting the licks of flame. As the perfume wears, the warmer notes become dominant, creating a cozy glow on the skin.
Notes: green leaves, fresh ice, oxygen, Chinese jasmine, fern, white amber, sandalwood, amber, musk
In some places, there is a tradition of gathering the leftover branches and twigs that remain from the frozen winter, and have an early spring bonfire, to make way for the new growth of spring. March XIX (2012) celebrates that cleansing fire. Mint is used well in the opening of this perfume, creating a springlike breath of greenery. The supporting notes are all about spices and woods. Even though it sounds like this should be a dense, heady perfume, it is not; it actually becomes a subtly clean skin scent.
Notes: orange, green leaves, minutes, nettle, lavender, cinnamon, clove buds, jasmine, sandalwood, cedar wood, vetiver, musk, nutmeg, rosemary
"Warming Up on a Cold Night in Zanskan" by Arun Bhat
When I first received my samples of the Tiziana Terenzi line, I sprayed all of them on strips of paper and tucked them into the little sample boxes. My room smelled really good for more than a day and I realized it was Gold Rose Oudh (2012). This fragrance is composed to evoke the mystery of a fire in a desert camp. There are plenty of Rose and oud scents on the market, but this one has an aura of authenticity that not all of them have. It has a high rose note that is surrounded by the smoke and ember of fire. It is peppery and dark with just a hint of sweetness. Sandalwood and honey mingle to create a truly fiery aroma, and it definitely evokes the glow against skin of a fire in the night, sparks popping, liquid eyes seeking truth in the flames.
Notes: bergamot, fir, ember, sand, rose, patchouli, black pepper, oudh, amber, patchouli, musk, honey
"Forest Fire" by David L. Sanhueza
Ecstasy (2012) represents the journey to the sacred fire of the soul. It is surprisingly piney and resinous, like sap bleeding from conifers on a warm day. There is something almost fruity about it, the sap is so fresh and sticky. The supporting notes are comforting, wrapping the resins in a blanket of serenity. I could see that this could be a meditative perfume for forest-lovers seeking enlightenment within the shadows and sunlight of ancient trees.
Notes: pine, spruce, stone powder, incense, patchouli, Rose, Violet, sandalwood, amber, cistrose, Tonka bean, forst land, ancient wood
I enjoyed these perfumes both conceptually and to wear. Paolo Terenzi has a lot to offer as a perfumer, and I look forward to smelling the rest of the line next week at Esxence, the Scent of Excellence show in Milan.
