Perfume and Incense brings joy to the heart”- Proverbs 27.9

For years I have been sampling and collecting oud oils and have filled several small boxes with ¼ tola bottles from various parts of the world. I love the heavy Assams, so animalic and redolent of barn and sweet hay.  I cherish the light fruity, vanillac oils from Borneo and the plumy, woody Cambodies, both wild and cultivated. Most of my little bottles house pure oils but some, I believe, are adulterated and a few are downright fakes.  But no matter, as long as they smell “oudy” I will love and use them all.

I also crave incense, especially frankincense, myrrh and sandalwood as well as various aromatics and resins, including styrax, artemisia and galbanum. These plant materials have been bringing intoxicating, olfactory pleasure, beauty and wealth to generations of people everywhere.

For centuries kingdoms and economies have evolved from and revolved around trade in aromatics. Poets have written and continue to write about incense, the wisps of fragrant smoke that color our visions of paradise. In the West, perfumistas  often take for granted how beautiful a raw material real oud is, as it has become ubiquitous- from luxury to mainstream.

In 2013, Nicolaï Parfumeur introduced two oud-centric fragrances, Rose Oud and Amber Oud.  Early this year the beautiful Oud Sublime debuted at Esxence 2016.  The House’s latest oud perfume  Incense Oud, debuted in September 2016 at Pitti in Milan.

Incense Oud opens for me with a soaring, almost breathtaking green accord of artemisia (Artemisia tridentata or ludoviciana), davana (Artemisia pallens) ambrette seed and coriander. The davana adds a liquored presence to the artemisia while the ambrette seed rounds and warms the initial crisp, herbal atmosphere. This first green “incense” gradually evolves to a second smoke – the centerpiece of the fragrance.  Here the davana works its magic again, augmenting the fruity quality of the Cambodian oud while the cypriol and atlas cedar enhance its woody profile.  The Cambodian oud in this composition is much lighter and more ethereal than pure oud oil, more a breath of oud than dehn al-oudh – incense rather than an oil.

The sensual oudy heart is quite tenacious, lingering for several hours before drying down to a spiritual fume of Omani frankincense and styrax. This third phase clings closely to my skin, eventually fading, after almost ten hours, to a sweet suggestion of leather, amber and musk.

Parfums de Nicolaï Incense Oud is a beautiful and fresh approach to classic and contemporary oud based fragrances.  Both the brilliant perfumery of Mme Patricia de Nicolaï and the high quality, sustainable fragrance materials she uses, serve to capture the fleeting presence of incense and the rich exotic nature of oud in one complex aura of scent.

  • Artemisia, oud, amber… the notes sound magical!Thank you for the wonderful writing, Gail.
I have not tried Parfums de Nicolaï fragrances. (EU)

  • Gail’s review got me with the idea of a crisp herbal scent with a leather drydown – plus I live my insence. I would love this opportunity to try any of Patricia de Nicolai’s work, she is so revered in the perfumery world. I live in Canada, thanks for this lovely draw!

  • there are a lot of oud fragrances in the market, but I like the idea this one seems to smell to real one and the fact of using omani incens wich can make the difference 🙂 Curious to smell this one!
    I am in EU.

  • Miss Sunshine says:

The green accord of artemisia in the opening appeals to me. I’ve not tried any Nicolai perfumes.
Thank you for the draw! I live in Europe

  • Wonderful review. From the review, Incense Oud sounds fabulous, I would be very glad if I would win. I have never tried any of Parfums de Nicolaï fragrance. Thank you for the draw. I live in Europe.

  • Just lovely. I have a few oud fragrances and I absolutely adore incense notes. This sounds like a wonderful winter fragrance! I love the sound of the leather and amber dry down too. I’ve never had the chance to try a Parfums de Nicolaï scent, so would love to try this one. I live in Canada, thank you.

It is clear from Gail’s review she has had an extensive experience in ouds and incense. She describes incense oud as something green, a fresh approach to oud. I don’t think I have ever smelled something that mat qualify as fresh or greeny oud so far. I wonder how good this may be if Gail loves it. Thanks a lot for the generous draw. My favorite from Patricia is New York. I am in New York, USA 🙂

  • I can ‘smell’ it from the way she described the scent. Thanks for the chance, I’m from Canada.

  • I’m excited to see how many layers this has. Usually when you hear oud and incense you think bold but straight forward. Then again, what else do you expect from PdN? My favorite is, of course, New York. Maybe even New York Intense. Cheers, from Michigan.

  • concertslover says:

Our can seem very clingy like a haze if done to heavily in a scent. What I really like about this is the fact that they go one further, instead of cedar they use Atlas Cedar etc. The base contains some that are unfamiliar to me as well, Styrax and Castoreum to name 2. Seems very complex and definitely worth trying.

  • I like that Gail touched on the political and economic significance of aromatic materials in earlier times – it’s easy to lose touch with such things now, when they are often regarded solely as luxuries. I sometimes have trouble with oud as a note, but I have never encountered a fragrance by Patricia de Nicolai that I don’t enjoy, so if anyone can produce the oud to win me over, it would be she. It’s hard to pick just one favorite from the house but Le Temps d’une Fete, Odalisque and Maharadjah (so sadly discontinued! please bring it back!!) are three gems I hope to never be without! I’m in the US – thank you for a fascinating review and the draw!

  • You had me at incense. I also happen to love oud but cost has prohibited me from exploring further. 🙁 but this incense oud sounds like a winner! 😉 I am always burning Incense and absolutely love it when I can douse myself with it lol! This is only my second time hearing of Davana and I want to smell that or see if I can detect it. Love the pictures and historical notes in this review. Would LOVE to win this draw. Seriously. I am in the USA

  • I love that out is long lasting, but have not yet found an old that I enjoy. I think the scripture on oud and perfume is pretty cool. I will have to high light that in my bible. I love a fragrance that reminds me of a place and have yet to find one that reminds me of my beloved Santa Fe NM and the old adobe churches I visit every time I go. I would love to win this. Thanks for the draw. I live in the U.S.

  • I love the juxtaposition of the herbal notes with the woods and resins. I’ve tried the Vanille Tonka and really liked it. Thanks for the draw. I live in the USA

  • The impact of the davana accord intrigues me the most, as described in this review – I’m curious to experience it myself.

I live in Canada and have not yet tried any Parfums de Nicolai fragrances yet. Thanks!

  • I love these reviews for I end up learning as much about the cultural background as well as the materials used. And I wish I had a friend who’d let me spend an afternoon among their oud collection, what a wonderful thing! I’m going to look out for this perfume in the stores and see if I can’t discern the difference that Cambodian oud makes compared to some of the other oud compositions I’ve tried in recent years. As much as it’s been done (and overdone), PdN always but always does a wonderful job and my favorite thus far is Odalisque. I’m in the US and would love to win this!

  • Resines, incense, oud, amber, leather, with a breathtaking green accord of artemisia starting and then a smoky atmosphere later : I’m in love !

Thank you for the draw !
    I’m in Europe.

  • Just the name of all those wonderful components–artemisia, davana, ambrette, coriander– made me happy. I’d love to experience the dry down from this fragrance.
I am a big fan of New York from Parfums de Nicolaï.
    I live in the USA.

  • Smoke plus fruity/woody oud sounds very nice. I haven’t tried anything from Parfums de Nicolai yet. I live in Europe.

  • Like Gail I love the incense notes that are part of this fragrance too. I have several favorites from the PdN house including, New York and Eau d’Ete. USA

  • The blend sound great- oud and incense these two notes make me always happy so I will try my luck on this draw.
    Thank You for the chance!

  • This sounds great; green incense with a fruity center. Would love to try! I love the paintings used to illustrate this article! My favorite is Fig Tea . I am in USA. Thanks for the draw.

  • I love oude and incense! I burn many pure resins in my home and it always soothes my soul. I don’t own any PdN perfumes so this would be a first for me.

  • Diana Devlin says:

Absolutely love the notes and I’d be so thrilled to try Parfums de Nicolai. I am new to the fragrance house.

  • Patricia de Nicolai is my favorite perfumer and I own Odalisque, Kiss me Tender and New York. I am DYING for Oud Sublime but incense oud sounds amazing. I am trying to learn more about the different types of oud, so thank you for the link to the oud post.

  • This sounds amazing! oud, amber, leather are some of my favorite notes! Cant wait to put my nose on this!

Thank you for the draw !
    I’m in Europe.

  • The central smoke in this perfume sounds wonderful. I’m exploring Oud, and the lightness of this scent really appeals to me. I live in the US!

  • The combinationof Oud and incense is a very beautiful one. I love Patricia de Nicolai’s creations Cococabana and Violette in love as well asPatchouli intense are among my favorites! I amin the UK

  • I really enjoyed Gail’s description of the historical importance of incense and Patricia Nicolai has such a deft hand with heavy materials that I’m sure this smells amazing. Her Rose Oud is gorgeous but my favorite Nicolai perfume is the incomparable Vanille Tonka. Thanks for the last lovely review and generous draw, I’m in the US.

  • I especially enjoyed the description of the green aspects of the perfume. I’m totally curious about how this works. I have visited the Cambodian Oud distillery- its amazing, everywhere within a 200 metre radius smells like Oud. I felt totally honored to be there and was greeted so warmly. It took months to set up and I was lucky. I now feel connected it it 🙂
I am in NZ and I have not had the pleasure to try any of Patricia de Nicolai’s perfumes. Its a wonderfully generous draw and many thanks.

  • This sounds like a very complex fragrance according to the notes and Gail’s description. I’d love to try.
Fig Tea is my favorite Parfums de Nicolaï fragrance.
Thanks for the review and the chance to win! In the US.

  • Oud and artemisia sound like a great combination. My favorite fragrance from Parfums de Nicolai is L’Eau Chic. I’d love to try Incense Oud. Thank you for the draw! EU.

  • Artemisia and amber? Oud, rose, and patchouli? Wow, Incense Oud sounds fascinating, I would love to sniff it!
My favorite Parfums de Nicolaï fragrance is Odalisque.
    In the US. Thanks!

  • The list of notes sounds impressive. I am torn between thinking that there may be “too much” for my nose in this fragrance and between a feeling that I would love it.
I haven’t tried Parfums de Nicolaï yet. Thank you for the draw. I live in Norway.

  • I was just eyeing this perfume yesterday! Gail’s description of the green opening has me intrigued. I absolutely love oud, and Gail’s description makes me want to try it even more. I’m in the US. Thank you!

  • Patricia Nicolai is very talented. I only tried a couple of her creations but was very impressed

  • I love oriental woody fragrances so I am really curious to smell this one. Haven’t tried any Parfums de Nicolaï.
Thank you for the generous draw! In the U.S.

  • Thanks, Patricia, for generous draw! The first implication after reading name of the scent was Tauer s “Incense Rose” which I love so I think that I would love also “Incense Oud”. So many interesting notes in it – artemisias (davana, never heart about), Omani frankincence, Cambodian oud… I am in EU.

  • Sounds very interesting, especially for me, since I haven’t decided if I like oud or not. But I am sure I love incense and myrrh, so… let’s try Incense Oud. My favorite fragrance so far is New York Intense. thanks for the draw, I live in Poland, EU.

  • Thank you for so great review! I have never tried Parfums de Nicolai, so I don’t know what to expect, because oud is so strange note, it smells different in each perfume. I am curious how it is here along with amber, ambrette and styrax.

I love the poem by Hafiz of Shiraz. I agree that the smell of incense has some transcendent quality about it.
I like many fragrances by Parfums de Nicolai, mainly L`Eau à la Folie and Musc Monoi and I’d be delighted to win and test Incense Oud. I live in the EU, thanks for the draw.

  • I really like the reference to a ‘breath of oud’…it sounds like an Oud for beginners. I have had the opportunity to sample Kiss me intense and Vanille tonka and loved them both. I live in Phoenix, Az in the US. Thank you for the chance!

  • Oud and artemisia sound very nice. I love Parfums de Nicolai and my favorite are Musc Intense and Musc Monoi. Thank you for so generous giveaway. I live in the EU.

  • I am usually very fond of incense and oud, but in separate fragrances. I wonder how they would behave together on my skin. So far I have tried only Odalisque from Parfums de Nicolai and I don’t know what to expect from Incense Oud because Odalisque, while very beautiful, belongs to a different group of scents. I live in Europe. Thank you for the draw.

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

Thanks for such a wonderful review. I love dark, potent & mysterious fragrances. Incense and Oud are to die for and my favorite notes in perfumery. Patricia de Nicolai Incense Oud notes are right of my alley. Never tried any of the fragrances from Patricia de Nicolai. Thanks to the generosity Patricia de Nicolai of Parfums de Nicolai, would love to win.

  • I love when Davana is used in a scent and to mix it with Incense and Oud with the expertise Patricia brings, I am sure this gorgeous! I would love to try this! My favorite fro this line is Le Temps d’une Fête but, I enjoy so many others of hers. Thanks for the draw, I live in the UAE.

  • I haven’t tried any from Parfums de Nicolai but I like the description of Incense Oud. I would love to try this one because the davana/artemisia part sounds nice.
Thank you for the chance! I live in the EU.

  • I am a fan of incense in almost every perfume I have tried. The thing with oud is much more complicated and not every oud smells good on me, but I think they both together would make a very intense and sensual fragrance. I live in Europe, thanks for the draw.

  • Incense Oud sounds great, very warm, spicy and cozy. like a great perfume to warm up a windy, chilly autumn day. I would love to try this fragrance. Thank you for the giveaway, I live in the EU.

  • “The sensual oudy heart is quite tenacious, lingering for several hours before drying down to a spiritual fume of Omani frankincense and styrax. This third phase clings closely to my skin, eventually fading, after almost ten hours, to a sweet suggestion of leather, amber and musk.” It sounds absolutely wonderful! I’ve never tried any perfume by Parfums de Nicolai and I’m very excited to do so! I live in the EU. Thank you for the review and the draw.

  • Love the notes! Coriander, rose and styrax are among the ingredients which always work for me. I am almost sure Incense Oud will be my next great discovery from Parfums de Nicolai (after Le Temps d’une Fete). I live in Europe and I’d love to win Incense Oud. Thanks!

  • I don’t have much more to say – I fully agree with the biblical statement that perfume and incense brings joy to the heart. I look for joy, positive emotions and beauty in perfumes and I often find them where I can smell incense. I hope this would also be the case. Thank you for the draw. I live in the EU and I would love to win Incense Oud 🙂
