Olympic Orchids Artisan Perfumes: Scents of Place +Travel Without Leaving Home Draw

Olympic Orchids Artisan Perfumes is a line of fragrances developed by Dr. Ellen Covey, initially to capture the unique scents of various orchids. Eventually, she expanded the line to include other categories as well. I found myself attracted to the perfumes in her “Scents of Place” collection, each created to evoke a certain part of the world that Dr. Covey has experienced. Three of the fragrances from that collection stood out for me. (Editor's Note: Siam Proun was named Best Fragrance You've Never Heard Of for 2011 by EIC Michelyn Camen)

Strolling through a loamy, sultry patch of forested ground is one of life’s true pleasures. Olympic Rainforest manages to capture the aromas of that forest superbly. I wore it when I took a walk on a foggy, cool day, and the fragrance wafting from my sweater was intoxicating and appropriate to the mood. There is greenery, mulch, mist, and earth, all combined into a wearable, exhilarating fragrance. I could see adding this into my winter fragrance wardrobe easily, and I will relish revisiting it. Olympic Rainforest has medium sillage and average longevity.

Siam Proun, which means “we are sufficient” in Provencal, is a delightful, translucent Oriental scent that blooms into warmth on skin. Perched on a base of soft amber, the fragrance is at once floral, spicy, and a bit herbal. I found it expertly crafted and easy to wear. Although the least evocative to me of the three scents in this review, it is the prettiest. The sillage is average, and the longevity is quite good – I could still smell it on my wrists after a day of work. Amber can be a difficult note for me, often veering into Play-Doh, but the amber Dr. Covey has used exudes warm comfort.

Kingston Ferry is a scent that I found extraordinarily comforting. I found pencil shavings, root beer, wild flowers, the sea – not all of these are actually in the fragrance, but I was reminded of all these things as I sniffed. As my day of wearing this scent progressed, I found myself feeling serene and at peace. A good comfort scent can be quite personal, and I’m not sure how other people would interpret this fragrance, or if they would have a similar reaction. It isn’t pretty, per se, like Siam Proun, or bracing, like Olympic Rainforest, but it is unique and has a definite personality. I am finding myself wanting to wear it more and more, and the scent haunts me. This is a low-sillage skin scent, with nice longevity.

All in all, the Olympic Orchids line of perfumes is worth exploring, and they have a good, affordable sample program. Please see our reviews of three other scents in the line, and our profile of Dr. Covey.

We have the pleasure of offering one lucky winner a 15 ml. bottle of perfume of their choice of one of these scents I have reviewed, thanks to the generosity of Dr. Ellen Covey and Olympic Orchids Perfumery.  To be eligible, let us know which one calls to you, and why.

We announce the winners only on site and on our Facebook page, so Like Cafleurebon and use our RSS option…or your dream prize will be just spilt perfume.

  • Fabulous reviews, since i have had the pleasure of trying some samples i purchased a while back i can without doubt say that i would choose the Siam Proun. You had me at Oriental and the fragrance is at once floral, spicy, and a bit herbal and the Amber in the midst helps also.

  • Love the reviews, Tama! The idea of “place” perfumes has always appealed to me. Since I have tried the first two (and loved them both – I just ordered Olympic Rainforest along with one of the orchid fragrances), I think I’ll take a chance on Siam Proun if I’m the winner.

  • The Olympic Rainforest calls to me as anything that invokes my beloved Pacific Northwest coastal rain forest is some thing I have to try. Nothing smells better than the forest after a rain.
This sounds like a wonderful perfume and one I plan on trying this year.
    Thanks for the draw.

  • The Siam Proun would be my choice. I’ve always loved Orientals, and recently I had a reading at Guerlain, and was told my skin loves Orientals, so there is a reason I’m drawn to them, I guess. I’ve been meaning to order some of this company’s samples. I’ve been on their website and the sample program is very reasonable.

  • Siam Proun for me! I love amber notes, mix it with the floral, spicy, herbal description of Tama on this one got my attention. I am for sure going to check out Ellen Covey’s site.
    Great job Ladies..

  • I would have to catch the kingston ferry! I have a unique personality;) I like pencil shavings. But I love the sea. Living in PA we are landlocked. It’s easy to miss the ocean. I have always lived waterside, until my relocation to PA in 2003. That’s a long time considering I was born in 1977:) the calmness and salt. The sunset over the waves. I miss it all dearly. If I’m the winner, I’m on the next Kingston ferry;)
Thanks so much for the generous draw cafleurebon and to Dr. Ellen Covey:)

  • I have also pondered abut buying samples of Ellen Covey’s perfumes. As a horticulturalist myself i have found the idea of her orchid perfumes very interesting. Perhaps I should take the plunge. The perfume I would choose would be Olympic Rainforest. I have never visited the rainforest of the Pacific Nortwest but would love to.

  • You got me with the description of Kingston Ferry: pencil shavings, root beer, wild flowers, the sea!! Wow would love to try it!!

  • Most excellent piece Tama! 😀

I think that, of the three, Olympic Rainforest sounds the most “me”! Only in the pacific northwest, and nowhere else in North America, are there actual rain forests! How cool!

Something green and bracing, yet earthy and comfortable sounds nice! I am a big fan of KIEHL’S Forest Rain and Bogner’s Deep Forest…but THIS sounds better than both of those! 😉

Thanks to Olympic Orchids and CaFleureBon for the cahnce to win lovely ‘fumes! *sighs*

  • Gosh, comforting and pretty sound enticing here in the bleak north east. I’m cold and the city looks rather gray, the trees are missing leaves and I’m craving beauty. I would love to win Siam Proun. I will definite check out this line. Thank you for the introduction.

  • I would pick Olympic Rainforest. I always want to try scents which make me think of forests, maybe because where I live we don’t have rainforest and I miss them.

  • I would love to try Siam Proun since it’s gotten such rave reviews. Plus, amber perfumes are one of my favorites!

  • I’m a maniac of green notes and the choice is obvious: Olympic Rainforest, but all the fragrances are appealing with your descriptions. Thanks.

  • Fantasitc review!I would love to try all of the Oplimpic scents. After reading the review I would pick Rainforest, but after checking their site deffinitly I would prefer Gujarat. It sound amazing.

  • Great review Tama.

Siam Proun is my choice. Perfect for this time of the yaer. Oriental with a base of soft amber, floral, spicy, and a bit herbal. How could I say no?

Many thanks to Ellen for her generosity.

  • Many people I respect have tossed their love for Olympic Rainforest into my imagination. The Pacific NW is gorgeous all around, but the Olympic Mountains hold a particularly majestic countenance.

  • tomatefarcie says:

I’d have to go with Siam Proun, I love that it means “we are sufficient” and that it’s in a language holding on by tradition

  • I’m curious to try Olympic Rainforest. A forest to me is the smell of nature at its glorious best.

  • Additional note: Today I received my order (Olympic Rainforest and one of the orchid perfumes), and I have to compliment Ellen on the lovely packaging and thank her for the generous inclusion of samples. Two scented thumbs up! 🙂

  • Pêche Noire and Field Notes are great, but for winter, I love Teint de Neige by Lorenzo Villoresi and White Oud by Montale.

  • I find amber warming & comforting, so Siam Proun is the one for me. The accolades it has received sway me even more!

  • Thank you for all the great comments!
Alica, your choice needs to be one of these, three, I’m afraid. Golden Cattleya is lovely, though.
Karen, you posted on the wrong article!
    Good luck to you all!

  • Fantastic reviews Tama. I loved how you described Kingston Ferry. While I don’t love the “marine scents” of the 90’s, I love the smell of the coastline. I am intrigued how this transports you to a serene and peaceful place. Haunting is an amazing descriptor. I have to try it now.

  • I’ve been longing to try some of Ellen’s creations, I think that Olympic Rainforest sounds especially wonderful.

  • These all sound lovely. I have already had the pleasure of trying some of the Olympic Orchid fragrances and they were all beautiful creations, with great personality. I should love to try all of the reviewed perfumes, but Olympic Rainforest probably calls me the loudest for it’s forest aromas.
Thank you Tara for the reviews, and CFB and OO for the generous draw.

  • These all sound lovely! Until reading this review I would probably have chosen Siam Proun–ambery oriental, very pretty, it’s a sure thing…but then…
‘low sillage skin scent, unique, definite personality, haunting, extraordinarily comforting, pencil shavings, root beer, wild flowers, the sea, feeling serene and at peace’
How could I not want to go for a ride on Kingston Ferry? It sounds like a wonderful experience, and not something I would have thought to try on my own without reading this, since I dislike those 90s marine scents also. Definitely my choice now, so thanks for the reviews! And thanks Dr. Covey for the draw.
