NY NOW 2018 Event Report + Lifestyle, Beauty & Fragrance Draw

NY NOW 2018 February 3-7, 2018

NY NOW, the Market for Home, Lifestyle + Gift, is held twice a year at the Javits Center in New York City (in August, which focuses on the Holiday Season, and in February). NY NOW is the premier market for Exhibitors to showcase what’s new and on trend in specialty retail. Brands and  owners attend both shows to present their latest releases and  attract buyers. There were several brands and products since my August write-up that are new and noteworthy at the February 3-7 NY NOW 2018 exhibition. Presenting were companies local and global, including perfumes from Italy, Ireland and Israel.

Highlights of NY NOW 2018:

Rahua Amazon Beauty's story begins in the Amazon rainforest where the women of the Quechua-Shuar tribe discovered the beautifying properties of Rahua oil. They revealed the ancient beauty practice to renowned New York City hairstylist Fabian Lliguin who is an advocate for the conservation of the Amazon and a native Ecuadorian of Quechua descent. The line uses organic, natural, pure plant-derived ingredients and all are vegan, non-toxic and free of parabens, sulfates, and gluten.

Abaton Luxury Brands is steeped in Italian heritage. They curate and promote niche market European products. The range of merchandise, from exquisite perfumes to hand-forged soaps, unique shaving articles, and sophisticated candles and home fragrance.

Inis the Energy of the Sea hails from Ireland. For over thirty years, they have been creating perfumes and toiletries inspired by the magic, beauty, and nature of the Emerlad Isle. Central to the brand is the signature scent "Inis the Energy of the Sea"; Inis is the Irish word for 'island.'

Minneapolis based Caldrea founded by Monica Nassif expresses her desire for safe alternatives to the nasty odors and chemical overload formulations found in homes. Conceived on a simple and powerful idea that caring for our interior environments should be a beautiful experience, the line-up includes candles, hand care, household cleaners, laundry and nursery products  available in nine different scents.

Sicilian based Baronessa Cali focuses on Personal Care and Home Fragrances. I was intrigued by their Scents of Sicily Collection. There are five "scents" in the collection with twelve fragrances. Sealed with a Kiss.

Doctor Lip Bang's Lip Freak

One of the more "colorful" presentation was L.A.-based Doctor Lip Bang's Lip Freak Buzzing Lip Balm. Pout, smear and get buzzing!  The lip balm is composed of premium beeswax, 100% natural,  and made with essential oils. Cleverly named flavors include Clockwerk Orange, Sin-O-Mint, Bubble Trouble and more. With no testing on animals and a portion of proceeds going to charity, this is my kind of Doc!

Founders Thomas Neuberger and Kristen Pumphrey of P.F. Candle Co. took a few turns on the DIY road before they hit upon their signature amber jar line. Success came in 2013 when West Elm picked up the line. Their mission, high-end quality candles at an accessible price point. Diffusers, room sprays, and incense are now part of their line-up. New for NY NOW 2018 is the Terra Collection.

Brooklyn Candle Studio is founded by fragrance obsessed former fashion art director Tamara Mayne. Her line, inspired by nature and travels, use 100% soy wax and blend with the purest essential oils and phthalate-free perfume oils. The candles are preservative and petroleum-free and 100% vegan.

From the Windy City, Chicago, Tatine Candles is rooted in nature and they tell their story romantically through rock and roll. Their five lines struck a chord with me. A sixth, Manufactory Des Fleurs, launches this spring. Perfume and essential oils are blended into their GMO-free soy and vegetable wax candles.

U.K. based, family operated brand L&L Home Fragrances and Cosmetics (Lavender & Lillie Ltd) takes inspiration from  travel memories and fragrance. Four travel destinations transport you to Grand Central/ Venice, Palace Road/ India, Praslin/ Seychelles, and Dover Street/ London. Dover Street  was my favorite. L&L also has an extensive line of hand and body lotions, soap and hand cream, candles, and diffusers.

Spring Perfume House was my last stop and I was intrigued to learn that the brand originated from Israel. Founded in 1999 with a passion for creating perfumes, cosmetics, home fragrance products, their look has a very classical French designed approach. Grasse based fragrance designer Emmanuelle Rivat lent  her expertise and creativity to these lovely perfumes.

NY NOW returns to the Javits Center August 12-15, 2018.

  • I am a lip balm addict and I need to try Doctor Lip Bang’s Lip Freak! I liked learning a little bit about all the different companies and products that were represented. I never would have known or heard of them otherwise.
Thanks for the draw, I’m in the US.

I had barely heard of a few of these brands and I thank Hernando for letting me know more about them and their lines. I’d heard of Inis but the explanation of their entire selection of products was very helpful for me. I’m most interested in the scents of Inis and of Spring, the latter because there’s such exciting fashion and beauty coming from Israel these days. I’m in the US.

  • So many new (to me) brands to try, especially Rahuha oil. Love that the brands are from all over the world. Spring Perfume House caught my eye. I’m in the USA. Luck to all.

Nice! Thanks for the writeup. I really enjoyed learning about the brands – I hadn’t heard of any of them, and they all sound like the types of brands/products that I’d like to learn more about and try. I love learning about smaller, all-natural/organic type brands (and wish they were easier to find in stores).

I think it’s going to sound funny to post on a perfume blog, but I’m particularly interested in Caldrea… I’ve been working on replacing some of the cleaning products that I use with more natural alternatives, but it’s hard to find things that work well, and don’t rely heavily on chemicals. I’m going to have to check them out!

    I’m in the US. Thanks!l

I am not familiar with any of the brands Hernando’s NY NOW 2018 report. The brands all look intriguing but the one that intrigues me the most is Abaton Luxury Brands exquisite perfumes hand-forged soaps, unique shaving articles, and sophisticated candles and home fragrances. Usa resident

  • I am actually a big fan of Caldrea products. I’d be really interested in Inis because my boyfriend’s family is from Ireland. I love the display of Spring Perfume House. They look like they have such an extensive collection.
    I live in the U.S.

  • Loved Hernando’s the brief visits to what’s new out there. I think Caldrea, Inis, Scents of Sicily, and Rahua caught my eye. I’ve sampled Inis in the past and really liked them. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the USA

  • Not familiar with these brands but they all seem great. Abaton Luxury and Inis interest me the most. I’m liking they’re style of products.
Thanks for this great report and giveaway.

  • It is nice to see this post about scented items for the self and home, perfumes and other ways to incorporate the beauty of fragrance into our homes and lives. Being of Irish ancestry of course the Inis line appeals to me. I have also seen but not experienced the Caldrea line, and fresh sunny scents such as those in the Baronessa Cali line are always as joy to experience. I live in the US and thank you for the chance to try these lovely products.

  • Great event report Hernando. You really gave a great highlight reel, and I feel as though I didn’t miss out on a thing! I’m happy to see so many brands from what seems like every corner of the world getting recognition. While I would of course like to try everything, I think the standouts for me were Rahua Amazon Beauty and Inis the Energy of the Sea. I’m a sucker for earthy backstories! U.S. xx

  • Hernando, it must be fun to see all these established and emerging brands! I love candles, a bit of an addiction, and it looks like there are a lot of good ones there. I lived in Singpapore for a long time and Innis was a big imported brand there, in all the malls. Thanks for the write up. USA

  • Thank you Hernando for a great report! I’m interested in the candle lines but the Rahua Amazon Beauty really appealed to me. Thank you for this draw! I’m in the US.
